• Appropriate high level language to deal with binary data

  Hi, I need to write a small tool that parses a textual input and generates some binary encoded data. I would prefer to stay away from C and the like, in favour of a higher level, (optionally) safer, more expressive and faster to develop language. My language of choice for this kind of tasks usually is Python, but for this case dealing with binary raw data can be problematic if one isn't very careful with the numbers being promoted to bignums, sign extensions and such. Ideally I would like to have records with named bitfields that are portable to be serialised in a consistent manner. (I know that there's a strong point in doing it in a language I already master, although it isn't optimal, but I think this could be a good opportunity to learn something new). Thanks.

  phpQuery is a really nice tool which has helped me tremendously in the past parse well-formed XHTML and XML documents, but I have recently run into a problem trying to select elements that have colons in their tagname, such as the following: <isc:thumb><![CDATA[http://example.com/foo_thumb.jpg]]></isc:thumb> I've tried to use the pq() function to select all of these elements: foreach ( pq("isc:thumb") as $thumbnail ) { print pq( $thumbnail )->text(); } Unfortunately this is doing nothing. If I try another element, like a tagname of id, the results pop up as expected.

• Is it possible to generate plain-old XML using Haml?

  I've been working on a piece of software where I need to generate a custom XML file to send back to a client application. The current solutions on Ruby/Rails world for generating XML files are slow, at best. Using builder or event Nokogiri, while have a nice syntax and are maintainable solutions, they consume too much time and processing. I definetly could go to ERB, which provides a good speed at the expense of building the whole XML by hand. HAML is a great tool, have a nice and straight-forward syntax and is fairly fast. But I'm struggling to build pure XML files using it. Which makes me wonder, is it possible at all? Does any one have some pointers to some code or docs showing how to do this, build a full, valid XML from HAML?

• Technique to limit number of instances of our application under Terminal Server

  I'm looking for simple ways to monitor and limit the number of instances of our application under Terminal Server (2003 and 2008). The purpose of this restriction is to make sure we don't overload our servers. This is an internal administrative requirement - I am not looking for a licensing solution. The application in question is written in Python 2.6 (32-bit) but I'm happy to receive development tool agnostic answers. Although we are not using Citrix, I am happy to receive Citrix related ideas with the hope that I can use a similar technique with Terminal Server. Thank you, Malcolm

  I want to hide the tool I used to create an .exe file. I am not doing anything illegal, I just want to protect my intellectual property from being copied.   I've been using the Silverlight Toolkit but I'm finding the quality lacking; in particular this memory leak / phantom point bug renders the Chart component completely unusable. Can anyone recommend a good chart / graph component for Silverlight 4.0? I'm looking for one that provides: multiple simultaneous series, both scatter and line multi-select of points configurable tool-tips automatic axis scaling real-time update of data That last point sounds trivial but is tripping up the Silverlight Toolkit Chart; if you rapidly change the axis range, it sometimes leaves phantom points behind in addition to the points it should be displaying.

• exposing subcontrols from the custom widget plugin in QT

  I am using QT 4.3. I have created one custom widget plugin. I could be able to show it in the desiner tool box as well as use it on the form with no problem. This custom widget internally holds QGroupBox, QLabel, QTextEdit. Now I want to apply the styles to individual componets of this custom widget. I want to expose these internal conrols as sub-control and style them. This would be similar to tear subcontrol of QTabWidget. In style sheet we can refer it as QTabWidget::tear... Is there any way by which I can do similar thing with my custom widget?

• Missing DLL Problem

  Hi everyone. I have a C++ native application that was built under VS2005 (sp1),On machine A. (Debug Mode) Now,I need to run this application on a "clean" computer, Clean means it has no VS installed on. When i copy the runtime folder from machine A to the "clean" machine and try to activate the application it demands to reinstall the application. obviously missing DLLs are causing this problem cause on machine A the app works just fine, Is there any "clean" solution for this kind of problem besides gessing which DLLs are missing ? maybe a smart tool or installer that indicates which DLLs are missing at the runtime ? • Is there an open source cross-platform push server?

  I'm currently in need of a (preferably open-source) free push server, that supports both linux and windows. I need something similar to the Ajax Push Engine, but that project unfortunatelly does not work on windows (I could use a virtual machine, but that's not what I'm looking for). I need to be able to push information to/from a python daemon, from a php script, to/from javascript and to a Blackberry application (built with java). Is there any tool that could help me with that? I've also looked into the Orbited project but frankly it lacks a lot of documentation and it's been very complicated to understand it. I'm not sure if it could work for me since it isn't actually a push server, but rather a proxy for it's built in MorbidQ server (or am I wrong?). Would a technology like Advanced Message Queing Protocol work for a project like this? Something like RabbitMQ or ActiveMQ? Thank you very much for the help.

• Deciphering Encoding: Packet Analyzation Tools

  I am looking for better tools than wireshark for this. The problem with wireshark is that it does not format the data layer (which is the only part I am looking at) cleanly for me to compare the different packets and attempt to understand the third party encoding (which is closed source). Specifically, what are some good tools for viewing data, and not tcp/udp header information? Particularly, a tool that formats the data for comparison. To be very specific: I would like a program that compares multiple (not just 2) files in hex.

• Trouble compiling some decompiled C# code

  I was decompiling an open-source project (because the source for the latest version hasn't been released yet). Using RedGate's Reflector tool, it gave me this block of code: if(somecondition == true) { ref Vector3i vectoriRef; float num17 = length - num; Vector3i end = vectori3; (vectoriRef = (Vector3i) &end)[1] = vectoriRef[1] - ((int) num17); } somecondition is a boolean. length and num are floats defined outside the code. vectori3 is also defined outside the code and is of type Vector3i. The type Vector3i is essentially this code, but with x, y, and z stored as integers. When I try to compile this decompiled code, I get the following errors: Line 2: Only assignment, call, increment, decrement, and new object expressions can be used as a statement Line 3: ; expected Line 3: Invalid expression term 'ref' Line 6: 'Vector3i' is a 'type' but is used like a 'variable' Any thoughts on how I can fix this code so it compiles correctly and does whatever it was intended to do?

• Ways not to write function headers twice?

  Hi, I've got a C/C++ question, can I reuse functions across different object files or projects without writing the function headers twice? (one for defining the function and one for declaring it) I don't know much about C/C++, Delphi and D. I assume that in Delphi or D, you would just write once what arguments a function takes and then you can use the function across diferent projects. And in C you need the function declaration in header files *again??, right?. Is there a good tool that will create header files from C sources? I've got one, but it's not preprocessor-aware and not very strict. And I've had some macro technique that worked rather bad. As part of their SDK, they provide a WSDL (Web Service Definition Language) file that, according to their documentation, can "be read by software applications and application development tools. • Need help writing a recurring task scheduler.

  I need to write a tool that will run a recurring task on a user configurable schedule. I'll write it in C# 3.5 and it will run on XP, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008. The tasks take about 20 minutes to complete. The users will probably want to set up several configurations: e.g, daily, weekly, and monthly cycles. Using Task Scheduler is not an option. The user will schedule recurrences through an interface similar to Outlook's recurring appointment dialog. Once they set up the schedule they will start it up and it should sit in the system tray and kick off its tasks at the appointed times, then send mail to indicate it has finished. What is the best way to write this so that it doesn't eat up resources, lock up the host, or otherwise misbehave?

I'm already convinced a language is just a tool, so I'm not interested in a religious war. I agree with the Pragmatic Programmers that learning one language/year is a good thing for your professional development So, in your considered opinion, what kinds of applications does Python hit the sweet spot? • Can I Import an updated structure into a MySQL table without losing its current content?

  We use MySQL tables to which we add new fields from time to time as our product evolves. I'm looking for a way to export the structure of the table from one copy of the db, to another, without erasing the contents of the table I'm importing to. For example say I have copies A and B of a table, and I add fields X,Y,Z to table A. Is there a way to copy the changed structure (fields X,Y,Z) to table B while keeping its content intact? I tried to use mysqldump, but it seems I can only copy the whole table with its content, overriding the old one, or I can use the "-d" flag to avoid copying data (dumping structure only), but this will create an empty table when imported, again overriding old data. Is there any way to do what I need with mysqldump, or some other tool?

  Trying to get SpecFlow running with a fresh VS2010 Professional install. Created a new console application and added references to NUnit and SpecFlow. Created a SpecFlow feature. The .feature with the default template code is created. Now I try to run this test, but I don't understand how. When I right-click the project (at the top-level), there is no "Run test(s)" option in the mouse drop down menu. Didn't the SpecFlow install correctly, am I missing some references or some other tool I need to install?

• Is there any reason why someone would want to create an Core Data model programmatically?

  I wonder in which cases it would be good to make an NSManagedObjectModel completely programmatically, with NSEntityDescription instances and all this stuff. I'm that kind of person who prefers to code programmatically, rejecting Interface Builder. But when it comes to Core Data, I have a hard time figuring out why I should kill my time NOT using the nice Xcode Data Modeler tool. And since data models are stuck to a given state (except when you want to do some ugly migration operations where thinks probably go wrong and users get mad, really mad), I see no big sense in a data model that's made programmatically for the purpose of changing it all the time. Did I miss something?

• Problem with literal arguments in the PATTERN string for a python 2to3 fixer

  Hi folks. I'm writing a fixer for the 2to3 tool in python. In my pattern string, I have a section where I'd like to match an empty string as an argument, or an empty unicode string. The relevant chunk of my pattern looks like: (args='""' | args='u""') My issue is the second option never matches. Even if it's alone, it won't match. However, if I simply say args=any and then output args, I can catch cases where args is exactly equal to the second option. Is there some weird unicode handling thing going on? Why won't the second literal option ever match?

The aim is to use this as a search tool to allow me to filter results to product IDs only matching the requested feature set. A query of SELECT feature_id FROM product_features WHERE feature_finder_id = '1' AND feature_status_yn = 'y' will return all of the features of a given product. But how can I select all products (feature_product_id) that have a 'y' value when they are on separate lines? Multiple queries might be one way to do it, but I'm wondering whether there's a more elegant solution based purely in SQL.

• How do I load only a single wordpress post via the url?

  Hello, We are currently undergoing some reworking of our website - in the meantime, I am looking for a quick a dirty fix. We have wordpress setup, so that no-so-tech-savvy employees can add events, news, etc. However, there are currently sections on our site dedicated to what would be tags in Wordpress. For instance, we have posts in WP with the tag "events." It's easy enough to display all posts with that tag, but I need to do a PHP include on our old site, and only show JUST THE POST. I can use a rss2html tool, but it strips out somethings like necessary tables. So how do Display only a single WP post, without anything else (no menus, settings, no Wp interface) via a URL? I could use a theme that is stripped down (by using something like theme switcher), but I need it to only load that theme once, not be the default theme....

• Would I really want to return the minimum date?

  An old work colleague used to quote his father about tools, "You have to be smarter than it." In the code below, Resharper is telling me, "Value assigned is not used in any execution path" (pointing to the first line). If I accept its offer of help, dt is not assigned a value ("today"). Is this a case where "I have to be smarter than it" and ignore their warning, or is this a case where the tool is smarter than me, and I'm just not understanding it? My take on the situation is that if the if statement fails, the current date is returned (the default value I want), but if I acquiesce to Resharper's "demands" it would return the default value for Datetime, which is the minimum date, which I assume is something like 7/4/1776 or 1/1/0000 or so. • Can you solve my odd Sharepoint CSS cache / customising problem?

  I have a weird situation with my sharepoint css. It is deployed as part of a .wsp solution and up until now everything has been fine. The farm it deploys too has a couple of webfront ends and a single apps server and SQL box. The symptom is that if I deploy the solution, then use a webbrowser to view the page it has no styles, and if I access the .css directly I see the first 100 or so bytes of the .css. However if I go into sharepoint designer and look at the file it is looks fine, and if I check it out and publish it (customising the file but not actually changing anything in it) then the website works fine and the css downloads completely. There is some fairly complex caching on the servers Disk based and object caches. as far as I can tell I have cleared these (and an issreset should clear them anyway... shouldn't it?) I have used this tool to clear the blobcache from the whole farm http://blobcachefarmflush.codeplex.com/

• Why TortoiseHg not show the "merge conflict"?

  Short version of the question: Since I already have TortoiseHg, I right clicked on that file trying to see the merge conflict visually, but there is no way to see it? Details: To make a simple case of merge conflict, I hg init a repo on Win 7, and then clone it to another folder. Now, in one working directory, i added the line "the code is 123", committed. And in the other folder, i did an "hg pull" and "hg update" Now, I go back to the first folder, and change "123" to "123abc", and then do an "hg commit" And then I go to the other folder and edit "123" to "123xyz" over there, and do an "hg commit", and when "hg push", it says it can't. So I try to use any visual tool to see how the conflict is like, but ... TortoiseHg doesn't seem to have any option to do that?
