  • Getting website data into Adobe InDesign

    - by Magnus Smith
I'd like our magazine team to be able to download website data in a file that Adobe InDesign can read. They can then import/open the file, make a few tweaks, and cut out a vast deal of repetitive manual labour (they currently use copy&paste for a few hours). After a brief Google I note that v2 of InDesign can import/export XML so perhaps that is my best bet? Are there any alternatives, and can anyone offer any advice on them? I am using a PC, and the magazine team are on Macs; testing will be tiresome I fear. The data we wish to format is fairly simple - a title followed by a short chunk of text (repeated about 50 times, say). I'll ask about importing images later. Thanks for your help. I will return to Google now, but it would be great if anyone can point me in a more specific direction first!

  • Detecting a Key Press Squashed by Another Application

    - by Eric Smith
I have a WPF application I'm planning to use as an overlay for a DirectX game (specifically Bad Company 2). I'm using WM_KEYBOARD_LL hook to detect KeyDown events so I can bring my app to the foreground when a specific button is pressed. This works perfectly except for when the game is running (I've also noticed this problem with Window's "Chess Titans" so it may be a DirectX thing). As far as I can work out, when the game detects a keyboard press, it "eats" the event and doesn't pass the CallNextHookEx() method like it should, which would allow the key press message to be moved along to the next application in the queue. I'm wondering if there's any sort of work-around to this? It seems kind of unfair that a single application can just willy-nilly eat up messages like that. Thanks! :) Relevant MSDN documentation: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms644985%28VS.85%29.aspx

  • Bypass system sound setting objective c

    - by HiGuy Smith
Hi. I have an app that Is supposed to play a AudioServicesPlayAlertSound(); but I've noticed on the iPod touch 1G, the sound will only play if the system sound setting is set to speaker or both. Is there a way to bypass this setting, because I know it works when the setting is not set to headphones. Also, if it is not possible, is there a way to alert the user to change this setting? I have a iPod touch 1G to test with, just incase. Wondering, HiGuy (CouleeApps)

  • Convert json to a string using jquery

    - by becomingGuru
I have a nested json. I want to post it as a form input value. But, seems like jquery puts "Object object" string into the value. It seems easier to pass around the string and convert into the native form I need, than dealing with json as I don't need to change anything once it is generated. What is the simplest way to convert a json var json = { "firstName": "John", "lastName": "Smith", "age": 25, "address": { "streetAddress": "21 2nd Street", "city": "New York", "state": "NY", "postalCode": "10021" }, "phoneNumber": [ { "type": "home", "number": "212 555-1234" }, { "type": "fax", "number": "646 555-4567" } ], "newSubscription": false, "companyName": null }; into its string form? var json = '{ "firstName": "John", "lastName": "Smith", "age": 25, "address": { "streetAddress": "21 2nd Street", "city": "New York", "state": "NY", "postalCode": "10021" }, "phoneNumber": [ { "type": "home", "number": "212 555-1234" }, { "type": "fax", "number": "646 555-4567" } ], "newSubscription": false, "companyName": null }' Following doesn't do what I need: Json.stringify()

  • Free downloadable products in Magento

    - by Aaron Newton
Hello Magento boffins. I am using Magento to build an eBooks site. For the release, we plan to have a number of free downloadable books. We were hoping that it would be possible to use the normal Magento 'catalog' functionality to add categories with products underneath. However, since these are free downloadable products, it doesn't really make sense to send users through the checkout when they try to download. Does anyone know of a way to create a free downloadable product which bypasses the checkout altogether? I have noticed that there is a 'free sample' option for downloadable products, but I would prefer not to use this if I can as I plan to use this field for its intended purpose when I add paid products.

  • How can I get the data from an ajax request to appear inside a div?

    - by Aaron Brokmeier
    I am unable to get the data from my ajax request to appear inside <div class="l_p_i_c_w"></div>. What am I doing wrong? I know the function inside my_file.php works, because if I refresh the page, then the data shows up where it should. jQuery: $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "my_file.php", dataType: 'html', success: function(data){ $('div#myID div.l_p_c div.l_p_i_c_w').prepend(data); } }); HTML: <div class="l_p_w" id="myID"> <div class="l_p_c"> <div class="l_p_i_c_w"> <!-- stuff, or may be empty. This is where I want my ajax data placed. --> </div> </div> </div> CSS: .l_p_w { width:740px; min-height:250px; margin:0 auto; position:relative; margin-bottom:10px; } .l_p_c { position:absolute; bottom:10px; right:10px; width:370px; top:60px; } .l_p_i_c_w { position:absolute; left:5px; top:5px; bottom:5px; right:5px; overflow-x:hidden; overflow-y:auto; }

  • Will Apple's new "originally written in" clause affect your decision to target the iPhone?

    - by Michael Aaron Safyan
So, you've probably heard about Apple's change to its agreement to prohibit source-to-source translation, thereby blocking translation from Flash (in CS5) and also from Android (via XMLVM). You may also have read about a response by a well-known Adobe developer, and calls to boycott development for the iPhone. Given that this audience is a better representative of the developer community than those who post comments on the NYT, Digg, and other news sites, I was wondering what your opinions were about this decision. Will any of you switch to Android from the iPhone or avoid development on the iPhone as a result of this? Since this is fairly subjective, I am making this a community wiki. Also, please, keep things civil.

  • Parameterized include in Classic ASP with VBScript

    - by Thom Smith
I want to write a function that will include an external file, much like Server.Execute, but will pass along parameters. I'm aware that Server.Execute will pass along query parameters, but I'd like to pass data more generally. For instance: ' main.asp MyInclude("external.inc", Array("mykey", "myval")) ' external.inc Response.Write mykey I doubt I can get quite that far without reading the external fine, twiddling it, and executing, but I'd like to get as close as reasonably possible. Also, if possible, I'd prefer avoiding using the query passing option for security reasons.

  • Creating a customized video using Flash and XML

    - by Aaron Ladage
The problem: I have to create a Flash video (in CS3) that will query a MySQL database and display that data at certain points in the video. The bigger problem: I'm not a Flash/ActionScript developer, so this is all very foreign to me! I've divided this project into two parts: a.) dynamically generate an XML feed from the data using PHP (using an ID number passed in the URL's query string), and b.) be able to work with it in Flash. I've got the first part working, but am pretty lost in Flash. I can parse the XML, but I'm not sure how to set the data up as variables and attach it to a video's cue points. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial or offer some advice?

  • DBMS for POS software

    - by Andrew Smith
Hello, I want to develop a POS application in .NET (C#) that would be used to rent items. I have a good idea of what will be done and the famous question that I have is about the DBMS that I should use. I would like to use MySQL database. The question is: If some places use only one computer (no network, no internet connection), can I use a MySQL database in local? Do I need to install MySQL server on all thoses computers to be able to use such a database? I know SQLite but I'm not sure if the limitations can cause problems in the future... I also looked at SQLServer Express versions. (I must consider that other point of sales are using multiple computers and more transactions so there I can't put sqlexpress or sqlite) So can anybody suggest me what I should do in that situation? Thanks

  • PyML 0.7.2 - How to prevent accuracy from dropping after stroing/loading a classifier?

    - by Michael Aaron Safyan
This is a followup from "Save PyML.classifiers.multi.OneAgainstRest(SVM()) object?". The solution to that question was close, but not quite right, (the SparseDataSet is broken, so attempting to save/load with that dataset container type will fail, no matter what. Also, PyML is inconsistent in terms of whether labels should be numbers or strings... it turns out that the oneAgainstRest function is actually not good enough, because the labels need to be strings and simultaneously convertible to floats, because there are places where it is assumed to be a string and elsewhere converted to float) and so after a great deal of hacking and such I was finally able to figure out a way to save and load my multi-class classifier without it blowing up with an error.... however, although it is no longer giving me an error message, it is still not quite right as the accuracy of the classifier drops significantly when it is saved and then reloaded (so I'm still missing a piece of the puzzle). I am currently using the following custom mutli-class classifier for training, saving, and loading: class SVM(object): def __init__(self,features_or_filename,labels=None,kernel=None): if isinstance(features_or_filename,str): filename=features_or_filename; if labels!=None: raise ValueError,"Labels must be None if loading from a file."; with open(os.path.join(filename,"uniquelabels.list"),"rb") as uniquelabelsfile: self.uniquelabels=sorted(list(set(pickle.load(uniquelabelsfile)))); self.labeltoindex={}; for idx, label in enumerate(self.uniquelabels): self.labeltoindex[label]=idx; self.classifiers=[]; for classidx, classname in enumerate(self.uniquelabels): self.classifiers.append(PyML.classifiers.svm.loadSVM(os.path.join(filename,str(classname)+".pyml.svm"),datasetClass = PyML.VectorDataSet)); else: features=features_or_filename; if labels==None: raise ValueError,"Labels must not be None when training."; self.uniquelabels=sorted(list(set(labels))); self.labeltoindex={}; for idx, label in enumerate(self.uniquelabels): self.labeltoindex[label]=idx; points = [[float(xij) for xij in xi] for xi in features]; self.classifiers=[PyML.SVM(kernel) for label in self.uniquelabels]; for i in xrange(len(self.uniquelabels)): currentlabel=self.uniquelabels[i]; currentlabels=['+1' if k==currentlabel else '-1' for k in labels]; currentdataset=PyML.VectorDataSet(points,L=currentlabels,positiveClass='+1'); self.classifiers[i].train(currentdataset,saveSpace=False); def accuracy(self, pts, labels): logger=logging.getLogger("ml"); correct=0; total=0; classindexes=[self.labeltoindex[label] for label in labels]; h=self.hypotheses(pts); for idx in xrange(len(pts)): if h[idx]==classindexes[idx]: logger.info("RIGHT: Actual \"%s\" == Predicted \"%s\"" %(self.uniquelabels[ classindexes[idx] ], self.uniquelabels[ h[idx] ])); correct+=1; else: logger.info("WRONG: Actual \"%s\" != Predicted \"%s\"" %(self.uniquelabels[ classindexes[idx] ], self.uniquelabels[ h[idx] ])) total+=1; return float(correct)/float(total); def prediction(self,pt): h=self.hypothesis(pt); if h!=None: return self.uniquelabels[h]; return h; def predictions(self, pts): h=self.hypotheses(self, pts); return [self.uniquelabels[x] if x!=None else None for x in h]; def hypothesis(self,pt): bestvalue=None; bestclass=None; dataset=PyML.VectorDataSet([pt]); for classidx, classifier in enumerate(self.classifiers): val=classifier.decisionFunc(dataset,0); if (bestvalue==None) or (val>bestvalue): bestvalue=val; bestclass=classidx; return bestclass; def hypotheses(self, pts): bestvalues=[None for pt in pts]; bestclasses=[None for pt in pts]; dataset=PyML.VectorDataSet(pts); for classidx, classifier in enumerate(self.classifiers): for ptidx in xrange(len(pts)): val=classifier.decisionFunc(dataset, ptidx); if (bestvalues[ptidx]==None) or (val>bestvalues[ptidx]): bestvalues[ptidx]=val; bestclasses[ptidx]=classidx; return bestclasses; def save(self, filename): if not os.path.exists(filename): os.makedirs(filename); with open(os.path.join(filename,"uniquelabels.list"),"wb") as uniquelabelsfile: pickle.dump(self.uniquelabels,uniquelabelsfile,pickle.HIGHEST_PROTOCOL); for classidx, classname in enumerate(self.uniquelabels): self.classifiers[classidx].save(os.path.join(filename,str(classname)+".pyml.svm")); I am using the latest version of PyML (0.7.2, although PyML.__version__ is 0.7.0). When I construct the classifier with a training dataset, the reported accuracy is ~0.87. When I then save it and reload it, the accuracy is less than 0.001. So, there is something here that I am clearly not persisting correctly, although what that may be is completely non-obvious to me. Would you happen to know what that is?

  • Is there an algorithm to securely split a message into x parts requiring at least y parts to reassem

    - by Aaron
Is there an algorithm to securely split a message into x parts requiring at least y parts to reassemble? Obviously, y <= x. An example: Say that I have a secret message that I only want to be read in the event of my death. As a way to ensure this, I give a fraction of the message to ten friends. Now, I can't guaranty that all my friends will be able to put their messages together to recover the original. So, I construct each message fraction in such a way so as to only require any 5 friends to put their parts together to reconstruct the whole. However, owning less than 5 parts will not give anything away about the message, except possibly the length. My question is, is this possible? What algorithms might I look at to accomplish this? Clarification edit: The important part of this is the cryptographic strength. An attacker should not be able to recover the message, either in whole or in part with less than y parts.

  • Piping a bash variable into awk and storing the output

    - by Andrew Smith
Hello, To illustrate my problem, TEST="Hi my name is John" OUTP=`echo $TEST | awk '{print $3}'` echo $OUTP What I would expect this to do is pass the $TEST variable into awk and store the 3rd word into $OUTP. Instead I get "Hi: not found", as if it is expecting the input to be a file. If I pass just a string instead of a variable, however, there is no problem. What would be the best way to approach this? Thanks all!

  • architecture python question

    - by tom smith
hi. creating a distributed crawling python app. it consists of a master server, and associated client apps that will run on client servers. the purpose of the client app is to run across a targeted site, to extract specific data. the clients need to go "deep" within the site, behind multiple levels of forms, so each client is specifically geared towards a given site. each client app looks something like main: parse initial url call function level1 (data1) function level1 (data) parse the url, for data1 use the required xpath to get the dom elements call the next function call level2 (data) function level2 (data2) parse the url, for data2 use the required xpath to get the dom elements call the next function call level3 function level3 (dat3) parse the url, for data3 use the required xpath to get the dom elements call the next function call level4 function level4 (data) parse the url, for data4 use the required xpath to get the dom elements at the final function.. --all the data output, and eventually returned to the server --at this point the data has elements from each function... my question: given that the number of calls that is made to the child function by the current function varies, i'm trying to figure out the best approach. each function essentialy fetches a page of content, and then parses the page using a number of different XPath expressions, combined with different regex expressions depending on the site/page. if i run a client on a single box, as a sequential process, it'll take awhile, but the load on the box is rather small. i've thought of attempting to implement the child functions as threads from the current function, but that could be a nightmare, as well as quickly bring the "box" to its knees! i've thought of breaking the app up in a manner that would allow the master to essentially pass packets to the client boxes, in a way to allow each client/function to be run directly from the master. this process requires a bit of rewrite, but it has a number of advantages. a bunch of redundancy, and speed. it would detect if a section of the process was crashing and restart from that point. but not sure if it would be any faster... i'm writing the parsing scripts in python.. so... any thoughts/comments would be appreciated... i can get into a great deal more detail, but didn't want to bore anyone!! thanks! tom

  • flash as3, fade in/out layering problem

    - by Jackson Smith
    Ok, what im trying to do is make a day to night cycle behind my landscape. There is a sun and a moon, they rotate in a circle on opposite sides. (i.e. the sun is up when the moon is down and vice versa) when the sun is coming up it should fade from the night movieclip to the dawn movieclip, then when the sun is up a little bit more, fade into the day moviclip, this works quite well, but, for some reason, when it gets to the sunset, it just wont work :/ and the same goes for when it goes from the sunset to night :/ any and all healp is greatly appreciated, ive spent 5 hours trying to figure this out and cant! please help! stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, daynightcycle) //setChildIndex(night, getChildIndex(day)); setChildIndex(sunset, 0); setChildIndex(day, 1); setChildIndex(dawn, 2); setChildIndex(night, 3); function daynightcycle(e:Event):void { if(sun.currentLabel == "dawn") { setChildIndex(sunset, 0); setChildIndex(day, 1); setChildIndex(dawn, 2); setChildIndex(night, 3); stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, nightTdawn); }else if(sun.currentLabel == "sunset") { setChildIndex(dawn, 0); setChildIndex(night, 1); setChildIndex(sunset, 2); setChildIndex(day, 3); stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, dayTsunset); }else if(sun.currentLabel == "night") { setChildIndex(day, 0); setChildIndex(dawn, 1); setChildIndex(night, 2); setChildIndex(sunset, 3); stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, sunsetTnight); }else if(sun.currentLabel == "day") { setChildIndex(night, 0); setChildIndex(sunset, 1); setChildIndex(day, 2); setChildIndex(dawn, 3); stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, dawnTday); }else if(sun.currentLabel == "switch") { stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, switchLayers); } } function nightTdawn(e:Event):void { if(night.alpha != 0) { night.alpha -= 0.01; }else { stage.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, nightTdawn); night.alpha = 100; //setChildIndex(night, getChildIndex(sunset)); } } function dayTsunset(e:Event):void { if(day.alpha != 0) { day.alpha -= 0.01; }else { stage.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, dayTsunset); day.alpha = 100; //setChildIndex(day, getChildIndex(dawn)); } //day.visible = false; //sunset.visible = true; } function sunsetTnight(e:Event):void { if(sunset.alpha != 0) { sunset.alpha -= 0.01; }else{ stage.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, sunsetTnight); sunset.alpha = 100; //setChildIndex(sunset, (getChildIndex(day))); } //sunset.visible = false; //night.visible = true; } function dawnTday(e:Event):void { sunset.visible = true; day.visible = true; if(dawn.alpha != 0) { dawn.alpha -= 0.01; }else{ stage.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, dawnTday); dawn.alpha = 100; //setChildIndex(dawn, (getChildIndex(night))); } } function switchLayers(e:Event):void { setChildIndex(dawn, 0); setChildIndex(night, 1); setChildIndex(sunset, 2); setChildIndex(day, 3); night.alpha = 100; sunset.alpha = 100; day.alpha = 100; dawn.alpha = 100; stage.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, switchLayers); }

  • On Ubuntu, how do you install a newer version of python and keep the older python version?

    - by Trevor Boyd Smith
Background: I am using Ubuntu The newer python version is not in the apt-get repository (or synaptic) I plan on keeping the old version as the default python when you call "python" from the command line I plan on calling the new python using pythonX.X (X.X is the new version). Given the background, how do you install a newer version of python and keep the older python version? I have downloaded from python.org the "install from source" *.tgz package. The readme is pretty simple and says "execute three commands: ./configure; make; make test; sudo make install;" If I do the above commands, will the installation overwrite the old version of python I have (I definitely need the old version)?
