• Restoring the Fonts folder by using a restore point

  I am an idiot. Who would have thought that installing 2 gigs of fonts would be detrimental to the boot up time for the most common design programs such as adobe illustrator. I would like to restore the font folder because I am no longer able to just delete the fonts. It takes too long. So when I right-click the fonts folder and select "Restore Previous Versions" I am able to find a restore point, but the "Restore" button is greyed out. this leads me to think that I cannot change the settings of files in the windows directory. Oh and there are 34,000 fonts I need gone. Thanks

  A question concerning the possibility to run Photoshop as VM without violating the licence agreement (EULA) : My Adobe Photoshop is bloody slow, nd sometimes I need to launch thousands of image calculations that have to use hundreds of PSD templates. I want to increase my Photoshop calculation power by creating non-persistent virtual machines on my hosted server. Each VMm would only alive for a few seconds, just enough time to deliver the calculated file. Is this a violation of the EULA? I must clarify that I'm the only one to access my non persistent VMs.

• Flash Player is creating thousands of .tmp files

  We have seen a number of machines in our environment (XP Pro SP3) that have been running out of disk space because of .TMP files in the windows\temp folder. One machine had 6GB of .TMP files on it starting from around August 2010. The files are all 305kb in size and they seem to get created every 10 minutes. The files appear to be either .EXEs or .DLLs when opened in a hex editor. The words "this program can not be run in DOS mode" are at the beginning of the file and the words "Adobe Flash Player" are scattered all over the end of the file (probably the string table). While it's easy enough to clean them up, I'd like to find root cause for the issue. Has anybody else seen this?

• Find visually similar images automatically?

  I have a collection of images which is updated regularly that I'd like to group. Rather than reviewing every single image in the collection, I'd like to run an automated tool that pre-groups the images. Adobe PhotoShop Elements has a "Find Visually Similar photos" feature which works well, but it requires manually importing the images first, then I have to select an image each time I need Photoshop to search for images that are visually similar. I do not need a de-duping program since the images are never identical. Is there anything out there that can provide what I'm looking for?

• Not Understanding Basics Of Dynamic DataBinding (bindPropety) In Flex

  I need to dynamically bind properties of components created at runtime. In this particular case please assume I need to use bindProperty. I don't quite understand why the following simplistic test is failing (see code). When I click the button, the label text does not change. I realize that there are simpler ways to go about this particular example using traditional non-dynamic binding, but I need to understand it in terms of using bindProperty. • Windows XP, Preference menu's hidden for many programs

  I don't know when this started happening, but it has been several months since I first noticed it. Basically, when I go to a preferences menu of some programs, the preferences window is completely hidden, but the program see's it as being open. This prevents me from interacting with the preferences and the actual program. So far I've noticed it on Adobe Illustrator and Netbeans. Illustrator when I select edit - Preferences - An Option. On Netbeans it happens when I right click on a site and select properties. Here's a link to a screen shot after I click on the preferences menu (I don't have enough points to post an image yet): http://www.jestep.com/images/screen-2.jpg. Note that the main workspace is grayed out. I have to hit Escape to close the hidden preferences window. I've tried unstinstalling, completely wiping the registry of any trace of the program and reinstalling. Thought it may have been a multi-monitor issue when I switched from 2 monitors down to 1, but menu's were not on other monitor when I plugged one back in. I've reset workspaces, windows display, windows performance settings, changed resolution, safe mode, everything I can think of. I cannot figure out what would cause the same problem on completely unrelated software, and I cannot reset it by reinstalling. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Graphic Design in Outlook HTML Emails

  At the moment we are creating artwork in Word and saving it as an HTML file. Opening up a new email, clicking insert on menuclicking ‘File’Selecting HTML file and choosing insert as text. The word document is then embedded into the email and we can create HTML links from there. The problem with this method is we are limited to what we can create visually in Word. The artwork just does not look professional enough and we find that sometimes the headers or footers do not appear or do not stay in their correct position. What I would like to do is to be able to start in Adobe InDesign (the graphics package we use). So far I have been able to create artwork in InDesign and create buttons and hyperlinks in InDesignExport it as a pdf, maintaining the hyperlinksSave as HTML documentOpen new emailInsert HTML file choosing insert as text. The problem with this method is that the images move about, the text is all different sizes, but on the plus side, the hyperlinks have been retained. So I am almost there, but not quite. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get the design to display 'correctly' in Outlook.

• How to embed Arial in PDF when PDF has Helvetica?

  So, I've got a PDF file that's generated by a program that uses the Base 14 fonts, so that it contains "Helvetica" and "Times Roman". When I look at that in my copy of Acrobat 7.0 on Windows (for example), it shows these with Arial and Times New Roman. I'm fine with that. The issue is that I'd like to publish this PDF file on lulu.com, and they want all fonts embedded. Including the Base 14. I don't have a copy of Helvetica, so what seems the natural thing to do is substitute Arial for Helvetica and embed Arial. How can I do that? I tried using the Print feature in Acrobat (note: this is the full version, not Reader) to print to a PDF file using Adobe's "Print to PDF" printer driver, and selected the "Embed All Fonts" option in the print settings. This worked for the fonts that I had actual copies of, but instead of "printing" Arial for Helvetica -- which it would do if printing to a real printer -- it leaves all the Helvetica as Helvetica and doesn't embed it. Any suggestions for alternate ways to do this? What I really want is just a copy of my PDF file with ALL fonts embedded, and I'm quite happy if doing that means making one of the usual substitutions for the "Helvetica" that's in it. I'd be happiest if I can do that within Acrobat or other software that I have (pdftex, maybe?), but I'm willing to install another free utility if I need to.

  I'm reading a PDF copy of Jerome H. Friedman's paper "Data Mining and Statistics: What's the Connection?" using Google Chrome and the Adobe Reader plugin. It contains an amusing quote that I want to copy and paste to my blog. I used the mouse to select the text of the quote and pressed CTRL + C to copy the text. The document looks like this: When I paste the text into Notepad, Stack Overflow, or anywhere else, the product is Wingdings-like gibberish: ????????????????????????|?????????|????? ?????|??????????????????????????????????????????????????|?????????????? ??????????????P????? ?????????????????????P?|?????????|?????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????Þ?????????????????????????????????|???|???????????????????????????   How to make an "import image" button/field in a PDF form? I am designing a "Lost Pet" poster for a local animal shelter. The idea is to make a PDF file that users of the shelter's website can download, insert their pet's information, and then print it out if their pet goes missing. I will be designing the poster in InDesign CS3, and then exporting it to a PDF file. I will then add form fields for the user to fill out. I am ok with making text entry form fields. That is a simple matter. What's not so simple is figuring out a way to allow the user to insert a photo of their lost pet into the PDF, save the file, and then print it out with the photo in it. I am running Adobe Acrobat Professional 8. I am running it on a Mac. All of the searches I've done have told me that if I was running Acrobat in Windows, I'd have access to this other program called LiveCycle Designer which has pre-built form item libraries, including a Image Field. But I cannot find any similar option on the Mac version. Has anyone has any experience doing something like this? If so, I could certainly use some tips on making this work. Just a quick clarification... This is a volunteer design project that I am doing for the shelter, so I don't want to spend money on any extra software/addons at all. I am hoping this can be done somehow with the pre-existing software I have.

• How to debug a corrupt pdf file?

  Hi, im generating pdf files using a ruby library called "prawn". I have one particular file that seems to be considered "Corrupt" by adobe reader. It shows up fine in both preview and in adobe reader. It gives errors like: Sometimes I get: "Could not find the XObject named '%s'. Othertimes I get: "Could not find the XObject named "Im4". Then always I get: "An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem." Is there a way to open a pdf with some tool and have it tell you what is technically wrong with the pdf? Im sure I could figure it out quickly with something like this... thanks Joel

• Flex, can't custom style the tooltip

• Obtaining photo 'stars' rating using PHP

  I am trying to extract the photo 'stars' rating from .jpg files using php code. My intent is to show the highest rated images as part of a slideshow. I found that using the PHP_JPEG_Metadata_Toolkit_1.11 I am able to get the rating of the file if the rating is set from within Vista (Right click - Properties - Details - Set rating by clicking on stars) by reading the array returned by the Metadata_Toolkit $exif = get_EXIF_JPEG( $photodir . "/" . $filename ); $rating = $exif[0][18246]['Data'][0]; However if I set the rating using Adobe Bridge, I can see the 'stars' in Vista, but the $exif[0][18246]['Data'][0] returns a null value. Is PHP code available to read the ratings applied by both Windows Vista AND Adobe Bridge?

  I have a bunch of JPG-files which I want to stitch together with Photoshop's Photomerge function. I choose File → Automate → Photomerge... and browse for the files. Photoshop opens the files and starts analyzing. I see the process bar filling and different phases are mentioned on the process bar. Nothing weird there. When the merging is done (and if I don't blink my eyes), I can see layers-palette is populated with the chosen files and, by quickly judging from the layer thumbnails, they're properly aligned. Sometimes the image window itself can be seen, but not always. Problem is that the layers and the image disappear in a flash. There is no error message. Everything is like prior starting the photomerge. No file has been changed. I could continue to use Photoshop normally. This is what I've tried so far: Loaded folder which has 38 JPG images, 4272 x 2848 and ˜ 5 megabytes per file Loaded the same files, but chose Use Files instead of Use Folder in the photomerge's window Loaded 19 JPG images, 4272 x 2848 and ˜ 5 megabytes per file Loaded 10 JPG images, ⇑ see above Loaded 5 JPG images, see above Loaded 3 JPG images, see above Scaled the images to 2256 x 1504 and ˜< 1 megabytes per file Loaded in a set of 38, 19, 10, 5, 3 Following steps are tested with these smaller files and with a set of 5 images Read Adobe's forums and reduced the amount of RAM Photoshop uses gradually from ˜ 80 % to 50 % (though I didn't understand the logic behind this) Would've reduced cache tile size to 128K, but it was set so already Disabled OpenGL Scaled the images to 800 x 533 and ˜ 100 kilobytes per file, loaded a set of 5 Read more unanswered threads around the internet In between each test I closed and reopened Photoshop. First loading the images into one file via File → Scripts → Load Files into Stack… and then using Edit → Auto-Align Layers…, which, effectively, is the same as photomerge (even the dialog looks kind of the same), works! Even with the original JPGs without any issues. This doesn't fix photomerge, though.

• Adobe Flex Transparency not working on Button icon

  I am fairly inexperienced with Flex, but my googling has retrieved nothing to suggest this is an obvious question. I have an mx:Button with an Icon on it that is a png file with a transparent background, as below, however the transparency is not working, and the icon is painted with a white background. <mx:Button label="Button" icon="@Embed(source='images/clearTracks.png')"/> I have seen how to use a ByteArrayImage to get a transparency working on an image, but this technique doesn't appear available for a button's icon property.

  My system has an atom N270 + intel i915 graphic card. Under Windows I can enjoy 720p bigbuckbunny youtube video fullscreen without any trouble. Under Ubuntu 12.04 I have laggy and choppy fullscreen video and choppy video when not fullscreen. I've seen that under ubuntu the cpu is almost always at 100% use. What I must do in order to have videos playing well under ubuntu ? I've already tried the following : Force flash gpu detection : (no result) : mkdir /etc/adobe echo "OverrideGPUValidation = 1" | sudo tee -a /etc/adobe/mms.cfg grub options (had results but not enough) : i915_enable_rc6=1 i915_enable_fbc=1 i915_lvds_downclock=1 pcie_aspm=force updated intel drivers (glasen ppa) Using chrome instead of firefox (had impact but not enough)

• Adobe Flex 4.0 vs Silverlight 4.0

  While this not necessarily a technical question, I believe it will help a lot of developers (including myself!). With Silverlight 4.0 and Flex 4.0 both in beta, I thought I would put out an open question to the community and see what everyone likes and dislikes about each framework and why. • Adobe Flex Combobox as itemrenderer

  I have a flex combobox as a datagrid itemrenderer. However, after selecting an item in the combobox, its necessary to click out of the combo (i.e. into another cell or elsewhere in the app) for the value to be committed to the combo. Prior to this, the combo sits 'proud' of the datagrid and the value hasnt actually been committed. Is there a way to force the value to be immediately committed after an item has been selected and for the combo to 'lose focus'?

• Can throwing the iPhone high in the air launch my app or trigger desired function in iOS 7 or later

  My app is an emergency app. It will be used by people in emergency and disasters. It's possible that they got stuck in situations where they just don't have the time to enter or draw their password, launch the appp and push a button. Is it possible that ask the OS to launch the app if user throw their iphone up in the air or shake it vigrously or something else. PS: I think it's possible with the accelerometer.
