  • Raspberry Pi + Azure + Mobile App

    Ongoing project idea. So this is of long running personal interest to build a Mobile App that shows you a push notification/pop up alert, when anyone calls your house phone. So I've taken delivery of a Raspberry Pi. I've ordered a new Crucible Technology Caller ID Box. (arriving soon). I have been writing/learning Python to implement the Listener software. This will in turn push xml messages up to Azure for final delivery via push notifications to an App. iOS app already written to receive the notifications/allow address book additions made up from phone numbers from incoming calls. So this is fusion, R-Pi, Azure, Hardware and iOS. Details to follow as this plan unfolds.

  • Game Server on Windows Azure

    What do you guys think of using Windows Azure for deploying a custom built game server. It's being built in C#, and I want to get a few things down before stretching too far into the project. I like the idea of being scalable, but I also know that I will never get to the scale of anything to the scale of WOW, or something quite as big. It will just be an interesting journey to test something like this. So, will Windows Azure work for that, or is there any other services that can provide something like that?

    Below is the approach that can be implemented whenever there is a requirement of creating an Azure Table having entities with different schema definitions.   We can have a Parent Entity defined which will hold the data common in all the entity types and then rest all entities should inherit from this parent class.   • Background worker not working right

    I have created a background worker to go and run a pretty long task that includes creating more threads which will read from a file of urls and crawl each. I tried following it through debugging and found that the background process ends prematurely for no apparent reason. Is there something wrong in the logic of my code that is causing this. I will try and paste as much as possible to make sense.   • Scheduling a Delay Job on Heroku with a Worker Dyno

    I'm currently using Heroku's scheduler to run a script. However, the time that the script takes to run is going to increase from a few milliseconds to a few minutes. I'm looking at using the delayed_job gem to push this process off to a Worker Dyno. I want to continue to run this script once-a-day, just offload it to the worker. My current rake task is: desc "This task updates some stuff for you." task :update_some_stuff => :environment do puts "Updating some stuff ..." SomeClass.new.process puts "... done." end Once the gem is installed, migration run, and worker dyno started, will the script just need to change to: desc "This task updates some stuff for you." task :update_some_stuff => :environment do puts "Updating some stuff ..." SomeClass.new.delay.process puts "... done." end With this task still being a rake task scheduled by Heroku's Scheduler, is the only thing that needs to happen here the introduction of the delay method to put this in the Worker's queue?   • I spy a Live Framework portal

    Those that have followed my blogs for a while may know that I have a slightly banal interest in Windows Live and, more specifically, the Live Services developer platform'; if that doesn’t sound interesting to you then stop reading now. My interest mainly stems from the Live Mesh technology that was announced a couple of years ago and the data synchronisation platform API that underpins it; that platform is called the Live Framework or LiveFX for short. At the Professional Developer’s Conference (PDC) 2008 Microsoft made LiveFX available to the public as a Tech Preview and I spent some time learning to use it and also built a few test apps on it too. In August 2009 an announcement came that that tech preview was getting shut down: "At the Professional Developer Conference 2008, we gave the developer community access to the technical preview of the Live Framework. The Live Framework is core to our vision of providing you with a consistent programming interface. Now we are working to integrate existing services, controls and the Live Framework into the next release of Windows Live. Your feedback continues to help us build the best possible offerings for Windows Live users, for you and for your customers. " Since then news on LiveFX has disappeared save for a throwaway session at PDC09 and I was hoping that news was going to appear at this week’s MIX conference but nothing was forthcoming. Instead though today I stumbled upon an unannounced portal for future LiveFX applications on Microsoft’s Azure portal at http://live.azure.com. Check it out: I consider this to be very good news. This Azure portal was built after the LiveFX tech preview was decommissioned so seeing Live Services existing so prominently alongside Microsoft’s other cloud efforts like Windows Azure and SQL Azure vindicates my early investment in the platform and gives me hope that we’re going to see something get released very very soon. I believe that the potential uses for this platform are extremely compelling and I’m looking forward to trying some out in the near future. I am also expecting LiveFX to have a heavy dependency on the OData protocol that I talked about yesterday in my post OData.org updated - gives clues about future sql azure enhancements so you can tell where my interest in that stems from. In case you’re wondering the projects that you see listed above (Basic List Sample, JT-proj etc…) are projects that I built on the old Tech Preview platform so clearly that stuff has not gone for good which is also good news; not just because it means I’ll have access to the code I wrote before but I also assume it means that LiveFX won’t have changed much since its tech preview incarnation. I know there are other LiveFX buffs out there and hopefully this news reaches some of them.   • How to rearm Microsoft Office in 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine (SP1)

    I'm doing some tests in a 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine (SP1). However, after a few days (maybe ~180), Office is now saying that it needs to be activated. I've tried rearming with OSPPREARM.EXE, but I get the following error: "The security processor reported that the maximum allowed number of re-arms has been exceeded. You must re-install the OS before trying to re-arm again." How can I circumvent this, without losing all the data I have in the VM?

  • Apache/Jboss Issue - is this connection timeout?

    We have an application. The architecture is as below 1 load balancer (apache), which redirects to 2 app servers (jboss). The site is working fine and I am able to access it fine. But sometimes, randomly the homepage takes a while (like 30-40 secs) to load. I tried checking the logs but could not figure out why. I used the httptraffic analyzer, fiddler to see the traffic, but it just says the request/response took 30 secs or so. I checked the apache access logs, mod_jk.log.   • How to stop worker threads in a multithreaded Windows service on service stop

    I have a Windows service that uses the producer/consumer queue model with multiple worker threads processing tasks off a queue. These tasks can be very long running, in the order of many minutes if not hours, and do not involve loops. My question is about the best way to handle the service stop to gracefully end processing on these worker threads. I have read in another SO question that using thread.Abort() is a sign of bad design, but it seems that the service OnStop() method is only given a limited amount of time to finish before the service is terminated. I can do sufficient clean-up in the catch for ThreadAbortException (there is no danger of inconsistent state) so calling thread.Abort() on the worker threads seems OK to me. Is it? What are the alternatives?
