One time, machine rebooted (not manually), when I turn it on, it runs fsck on /dev/sdc2 and fix some errors and some files are missing on /dev/sdc2 I'v check /dev/sdc2 for badblocks, it doesn't have it ( using e2fsck -c /dev/sdc2 ) Here is the output of fsck http://pastebin.com/D5LmLVBY What else I can do to understand what's wrong here?   • Tweaks to make Cleartype better at high resolutions?

    Cleartype is great when displaying small text (say 10-16px). However when you display something above 20px it starts looking like mud. Just compare it to Photoshop. Photoshop rendering at small size is not very impressive, too blurry. But if you compare it at 20px, Photoshop wins all the time. Cleartype looks jaggy around the edges, almost like there is no Cleartype at all. Can this be fixed, or is it just the way Cleartype is?

  • clone of tseng et4000 extended mode font?

    Back in the day (day =~ 1994), the tseng et4000 video card had extended modes for the console under linux. There was a beautiful monospaced font (I think it was for 100x40 or 100x50, but my memory could be wrong). Anyone know a way to get said font for a modern computer (e.g., Mac OS X) or the history of the font, etc? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tseng_ET4000 has little info on this score.

    Windows xp3. This happens occasionally. Today it happened in a calendar item in outlook 2003. As you can see from the title here, the question mark is working here (firefox).     How do I enter normal text in Microsoft Paint? Normally I don't have any problems adding text to an image in Paint. But I ran into this problem: The text is supposed to be "abcdefd" (entered in a text editor and pasted). The same characters appear if typed directly. So apparently it is using some other character set. How do I restore normal operation? Platform: MS Paint 5.2, Windows XP Professional x64 SP2, 8 GB RAM.

  • How can I avoid Windows 8.1 resetting my font size?

    I am using Windows 8.1 on my laptop, which has a 15.6" screen with resolution 1366x768. I measured the screen with a ruler and calculated its DPI, which is 101. Therefore, I have set the scaling to 105%. However, when I change to an external monitor, which is a huge one with resolution 1920x1080 and DPI 93, I need to change the scaling to 97% but when I change the DPI back and forth, my font sizes have get resetted. I prefer using font sizes 14 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 13 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. However, as my laptop screen is too small, in order to make my apps fit on screen, I use font sizes 12 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 11 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. I don't know why I can't resize the window to make it larger than my screen in Windows (but it is possible in Kubuntu), therefore, some parts of my apps cannot be shown with my preferred font size. I have tried changing both the DPI and the font size by using .reg files. However, on my laptop screen, after I applied the file, signed out and in, the DPI setting changed, but the font sizes were resetted to tiny, and I had to apply the same file, signed out and in again to get the correct font size. The situation is even worse on my external monitor. After I applied the file, signed out and in, both the DPI setting and the font sizes were resetted to their default values, which were 96 DPI (the physical DPI as measured by dividing the resolution by the physical size is 93) and font size 9, which is totally unacceptable. How can I write the .reg files such that the settings can be correctly applied with a single sign in?

  • Non-embedded font with different name across operating systems when printing HTML to PDF

    I create a document using HTML markup. I want to use Palatino, which is called Palatino on Windows and Palatino Linotype on Mac, so I specify my CSS accordingly: font-family: Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;. I then print to a PDF using PrimoPDF under Windows. It all looks good when viewed in Windows. But I want this PDF to look the same on a Mac, and the resulting file size (94KB) would suggest that the font (size 460KB) is not getting embedded by Primo, perhaps because it is a native font. How will this look? Will the PDF file format resolve this, or will the format of my PDF be wang when viewed under OSX? Please note that I do not want to embed the font. I used a web-safe font to avoid this need, and it just so happens that the one I picked does not have the same name in OSX as in Windows.

    I use emacs in ubuntu and I use Monaco 10 as its default font. However, the font rendering seems a bit odd compared to my gnome terminal with the same font size: It's a bit smaller and not as clear as that in the terminal. I've tried to avoid simply this with size 11 but it's too large for me. How can I make it the same as its look in the terminal ? Any help is appreciated :) UPDATE: I should tell you the above on is GUI emacs running a shell, and the below is the gnome terminal. On the right are their correspond font settings.     Certain letters are suddenly showing up as fractions in Mac's Mail program. Specifically, lowercase a = 1/2 lowercase b = 1/4 lowercase c = 3/4 Capitalized, they work fine, the other keys are working fine, and this only happens with this particular program, but I can't figure out what to change or what's wrong. It's Mac OS X 10.4.11 and an update was applied last night but other than that nothing's been changed (that I know of, I'm asking for someone else). Thanks.

    I sometimes edit text in telugu language. However, when I open the file (UTF-8 encoded) in GNU emacs (version 23.1.50.1 on Ubuntu Jaunty) the text rendering is incorrect. The same text file opened in gedit is rendered correctly. Here's a snippet: ????????? ???? ???? ???????? rendred in gedit: And, the emacs rendering of the same text: Wherever glyphs need to be composited (not sure if it's the right word), emacs (or whatever library it uses) is not doing it right. Is there anyway to fix this? Perhaps tuning some setting in my configuration? Any ideas, please?

Is there some sort of free, downloadable tool to do this? BTW: There are some online programs that allow the user to create a font using a mouse. (See this question). Very cool. But, I want something that can take a scan and turn it into a font file. Any ideas?

  • How to use Cambria as basic font when math symbols are needed?

    I first thought one could use Cambria for copy text (in Word), switching to Cambria Math only when needed (when a character is needed that is not present in Cambria). This does not seem to work that well. For example, if I need the minus-or-plus sign “±”, I cannot take it from Cambria, but if I use it from Cambria Math, it has a shape rather different from the style of “±”, “+”, and “–” in the text, if it is written in Cambria. Similarly, the multiplication sign “×” is much larger in Cambria Math than in Cambria. The obvious solution would be to use Cambria Math as copy text font, for uniformity. But Cambria Math lacks italic and bold. (Word’s formula editor uses Cambria Math by default and can do italic and bold, but it gets them from Plane 1 – they are special mathematic italic and mathematic bold characters, not italic and bold glyphs for normal characters.) Is there any better approach than using Cambria Math for copy text and switching to Cambria when italic or bold is needed?

Specifically, I want the printable IPA characters to show up. It's not important to fix multi-codepoint glyphs, although it would be nice. How can I get such a font and install it for the command-line? Below is an example of some characters that can't be rendered.

  • How can I make the icon font color on a windows 7 prof desktop work?

    I have C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Scenes\img25.jpg as wallpaper (I think it's a standard windows wallpaper.) The desktop icon font color is white. It cannot be read without heavy eye pain. I want it to be black. I couldn't change the icon font color in advanced properties (ie the good old window color settings dialog) for aero for windows 7 professional x32. I've heard that the icon font color should change automatically to suit my needs, it doesn't work as advertised in my scenario. How could I fix it and rescue my eyes from popping out?     In my Debian installation I can type extended ASCII characters such as åäö by default using the terminus font, however in Gentoo I can't get it to work so far. Nothing happens when I hit those keys, like in this thread: Missing glyphs in Terminus font, how to setup a fallback font ? But in this case I know terminus supports those characters in at least some of its versions, since it's works in Debian. So what I want is to find out how to see and choose which of the many different terminus font files is being used. I set the font in the same way on both Debian and Gentoo, using URxvt*font: xft:terminus:size=xx in .Xdefaults. Both systems use en_US.UTF-8 as default locale.

  • Bold font shortcut in WordPress editor in Mac OS X? (The equivalent to Ctrl+b in Windows)

    I've recently acquired a MacBook Air and I'm getting used to Mac OS X shortcuts. One that I can't find, though, is the change to bold a piece of text previously selected in the WordPress editor. I do this with a simple Ctrl+b after selecting the text in Windows, but the expected Command+b in Mac OS X does not work (in WordPress at least. It seems it works in other editors online and offline). Is there a shortcut for it... and for italics?

  • Where is the Fixedsys font in Vista?

    I'm trying to locate the font Fixedsys in Windows Vista. I understand it's a hidden system font? My main goal at the end of the day is to get Google Chrome to display Fixedsys (should the CSS file ask for it), and the TrueType replacements I found so far don't look the same... Thanks!

  • Excel 'Data Matrix'-Font

    Is it possible in Excel to have a font that automatically generates a 'Data Matrix'-Code from a text string. (As it is possible for usual Barcodes) Would I perhaps have to use a Add-In, because the font isn't "linear" or "one-dimensional" as barcodes are? EDIT: I found a solution (using a pretty expensive software): I simply used "NiceLabel", which is capable of using XLS-Tables as databases. Then I generated the Codes (Could be Barcodes, QR-Codes, Data Matrix Codes) from the cells in Excel. This solution doesn't automatically generate a 2D-Code into an Excel-Cell but fits for my personal needs.

  • How to add a font to the Cmd window choices in Windows 7 64-bit?

    I tried following the procedure outlined in this previous answer and it doesn't work: http://superuser.com/a/5079/2366 Specifically I'm trying to add Lucida Sans Typewriter Regular to the choices of Consolas and Lucida Console that the Cmd window currently allows. Lucida Console is in registry key "0" and Consolas is in registry key "00", so I'm adding key "000" but it's not affecting the available choices in the Font tab under Properties, even after rebooting the system. P.S. I also tried adding Courier New to the choices and it shows up, but appears to select Italic instead.

    Windows 7 (Aero) does not offer an option to easily change the taskbar font size. BACKGROUND: I was using the Medium Text size of 125%. (Set via Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display) The problem I found was that many programs, sad to say, Microsoft's included, don't scale or position properly at other than 100%. I've reset the DPI to 100%, and have been able to customize most of my windows settings for easy reading, except the task bar font size In Summary: There are many ways to change the taskbar font color. I'm looking to increase the actual font size.
