• Image caching when rendering the same images on different pages

  I'm told to think about caching of images that will be displayed on the page. The images will be repeated throughout the website on different pages and I'm told to figure out the best way to cache these images. There could be few to dozen of images on single page. Here's few questions: Will browser caching work to display the same images across different web pages? Should I rather store images in stringified form in a memory instead, using JavaScript arrays? Store them on hard drive using 'localStorage'? What would be easiest yet best option for this? Are there any other alternatives? How to force cache? Any other information would be greatly appreciated...

• Hook Response.Cache to memcache

  Has anyone done this before? I have a 32 bit win 2003 server running 2.0 and have read the ms engineers' blog about min(60%, 1800mb) for cache limits and our site (asp.net 2.0 / 3.5) is caching alot. It throws system outofmemory exceptions when wp is around 1.3gb (unfortunately it is the 2.0 apps) and I would like to push alot over to memcache but worried that at the moment the site is efficient using response.cache as is (though memory is an issue). I want to move most items over to memcache and have concerns on a – how to do this (implementation of response.cache to read/write from memcache) and b – what will performance be like? Before I commit to doing this and possibly spending a few days running tests I would like to hear from you if this has been done already and get some feedback. (and please don’t tell me to buy a x64 machine – I have already requested this!), by the way I ran a test requesting a single image 1000 times and response.cache was over 50% quicker than using application cache. Does response.cache bypass the page lifecycle?

• CloudFront with Custom Origin and ELB

  We are using CloudFront for our static assets but also wanted to allow for Gzip. We set up a new distribution with a custom origin pointing back to our application servers which are behind a elastic load balancer. We manually keep the files in sync across the cluster and update them when we publish. However, with this set up, we get nothing but Miss and RefreshHits from CloudFront, which so far has defeated the purpose. Is there any additional settings in order to use an ELB as your custom origin? In the docs, it references this as a viable solution. It appears when we point the distribution to a single server in our production cluster, cloudfront properly caches our assets. Is it possible that the sticky sessions cookie and the subsequent header that gets added by it could be an issue? Cache-Control: no-cache="set-cookie" //Added by load balancer Any ideas? FYI - currently, we have our custom origin pointing to a single EC2 instance, so caching is working correctly - in case you try to curl the file below.   I would like to cache the response of an redirect. (Cache the request to some site which returns a redirect and cache the second request which returns the actual content.)   The system works and its called Microsoft Connect , who would of thought it :) Following on from my previous blog post MicroSoft – Follow best practices, on the connect item , the followup stated that changes had been made in 2008.  I genuinely thought that a change would take an age to trickle through to the customer. But after firing up 2008R2 RTM and examining the SqlAgent traffic with profiler , where before i would see non-parameterized sql, I now see RPC calls.    Excellent , i get my cache back.

  I have a user who's home directory is a Mercurial repository. Mercurial notified me that there were 2 new unversioned files in my repository. .bash_history and .cache/motd.legal-displayed. I assume bash_history is the history of bash commands for my user. I have no idea what the other is. I don't want these files to be versioned by Mercurial, are they safe to just delete, or will they come back, or mess something up? Can they be moved to somewhere else? Or do I have to add them to my .hgignore file?

  I've been experimenting with random cache expiry times to avoid situations where an individual request forces multiple things to update at once. For example, a web page might include five different components. If each is set to time out in 30 minutes, the user will have a long wait time every 30 minutes. So instead, you set them all to a random time between 15 and 45 minutes to make it likely at most only one component will reload for any given page load. I'm trying to find any research or guidelines on this topic, e.g. optimal variance parameters. I do recall seeing one article about how Google (?) uses this technique, but can't locate it, and there doesn't seem to be much written about the topic.

  Often I hear about situations where companies are developing extensable in house software (the dreaded enterprise 'framework') which is supposed to support multiple 'plugins' from diffirent teams. Usually this ends up being a half baked solution that does not really work due to compatibility prolems between addins, or between addins and the framework itself. Usually this means QA have to 'rubber stamp' a global set of versions accross all plugins, or more usually plugins are released and stuff breaks in nasty ways. This problem has been solved before however, for example the package management systems like apt for debian linux. I suspect that the reason it works is that it is built from the start on a known 'Computer Science-y' concept. My question is what is it?

I don't know why but I feel that it would look better if we had separate class (Spring bean with singleton scope) which will be responsible for sending email.   I have played with the JSR-299 Reference Implementation "Weld" with the purpose of using it in a stand-alone application, and I have had a look at the documentation, and marveled at the magic. My question is how the producer of a given object to be @Inject'ed is found? Either the java compiler produces hints for annotations which is easily found by the classloader, or the complete classpath must be traversed loading all classes to see what they do which sounds highly inefficient to me, or it is a completely different approach. What is the trick?

  I use maven to build a multi module project. My module 2 depends on Module 1 src at compile scope and module 1 tests in test scope. Module 2 - <dependency> <groupId>blah</groupId> <artifactId>MODULE1</artifactId> <version>blah</version> <classifier>tests</classifier> <scope>test</scope> </dependency> This works fine. Say my module 3 depends on Module1 src and tests at compile time. Module 3 - <dependency> <groupId>blah</groupId> <artifactId>MODULE1</artifactId> <version>blah</version> <classifier>tests</classifier> <scope>complie</scope> </dependency> When I run mvn clean install, my build runs till module 3, fails at module 3 as it couldnt resolve the module 1 test dependency. Then I do a mvn install on module 3 alone, go back and run mvn install on my parent pom to make it build. How can i fix this?

• Can I assign a maven dependency to a specific repo?

  So I have several large projects that use up to 8 different external repos, all specified in settings.xml rather than in poms. A lot of our internal dependencies are snapshots, so this obviously causes a lot of checking for updates across several external repos, when they are all in our internal repo. So my question is, is there a way to setup a profile/filter or anything similar where I can ensure that an update will only be checked for in a specific repo(s)? This is all in the spirit of better/quicker builds. Thanks!

  Hello, is it because the controls programmers are lazy, too hard to implement or not knowledgeable? Wether they are custom controls from 3rd party vendors or Microsoft itself, very much controls have often clr properties instead of DP. Result is I can not bind to them and is wpf not all about binding? :/ My next side question would be, why do so many wpf controls offer visual parts but they are not member of the visual tree ? see wpf datagrid columns, headers... What do you think?

  Hello, My goal is to have a user select a year and a month. Translate the selection into a date and have the user control send the date back to my view model. On the view I am using: <cc1:DatePicker ReturnDate="{Binding Path=StartDate, Mode=TwoWay}" IsStart="True" /> If this has been answered, then my bad. I looked around and didn't see anything that worked for me. Thus, when the program loads how do I get the value from the view model to a method in order to set the combo boxes? Thanks, -Scott

  I have two maven modules, one that ends up as a jar, and one war that depends on that jar. I want the jar module to package it's source code together with the compiled classes in the jar, so that the second module is able to access it. I have tried using the maven-source-plugin, but I am confused as to how to add a dependency on the output of that. It seems that the dependency by default goes to the compiled jar, and not the source-code jar (ending with "-source.jar") that maven-source-plugin creates. How do I add the "-source.jar" as a dependency, while still preserving the dependency on the compiled sources?

So if i have the following... ILoggingService and wish to add this my custom FilterAttribute .. i'm not sure how. Like, it's easy for me to do the following... public class MyCustomFilterAttribute : FilterAttribute { public MyCustomFilterAttribute(ILoggingService loggingService) { ... } } But the compiler errors saying the attribute which decorates my ActionMethod (listed above...) requires 1 arg .. so i'm just not sure what to do :(

How do I configure my ObjectFactory so that I can choose the first constructor or perhaps even another one if I decide to use that?
