  • Using nginx and/or varnish to cache server-generated 301 redirects

    I'm implementing a sort of url-shortener service. What happens is that I have some backend app server that takes in a request, does some computation and returns a 301 redirected url back upstream to an nginx frontend: request ---> nginx ----> app_server What I want to be able to do is cache this returned 301 url for the same request (a specific url with a "short code"). Does nginx do this caching automatically? Or should I drop in something like varnish in between nginx and the app_server? I can easily cache this in memcache, but that would require hitting the app_server, which I'm sure can be dispensed with after the first request. Thanks.

  • The cache is getting at full level so fast

    Please, the memory and the cache are getting to the full level quite quickly under my linux mint 9 - isadora system. I used Ubuntu and Debian before, and it was not causing this issue at all. At the current time i typing the following command frequently to empty the cache "echo 3 /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches". Please any way around this? or do you know what's going wrong? | I am only programming on this machine; no graphics, no games nothing. Thanks in advance for your help!

    OK I run a streaming website and my CMS is giving me an error when uploading videos "Failed To Find Flength File" ok so I did some research. The answer I got from the coder was below. I did do all that, but the only thing I could not do is turn off what he refers to as performance cache, talked about in the last sentence... I am on a Cent OS Assuming the script is set up properly, you are probably dealing with some kind of write-caching. Some servers perform write-caching which prevents writing out the flength file or the entire CGITemp file during the upload. The flength file or the CGITemp file do not actually hit the disk until the upload is complete, making it worthless for reporting on progress during the upload. This may be fixed using a .htaccess file assuming your host supports them. Here is a link to an excellent tutorial on using .htaccess files. I strongly recommend giving it a quick read before attempting to install your own .htaccess file. 1. A mod_security module for Apache. To fix it just create a file called .htaccess (that's a period followed by "htaccess") and put the following lines in that file. Upload the file into the directory where the Uber-Uploader CGI ".pl" scripts resides, or in some directory above it (like your server's DOCUMENT_ROOT, i.e. the top-level of your webspace). htaccess files must be uploaded as ASCII mode, not BINARY. You may need to CHMOD the htaccess file to 644 or (RW-R--R--). # Turn off mod_security filtering. SecFilterEngine Off # The below probably isn't needed, # but better safe than sorry. SecFilterScanPOST Off If the above method does not work, try putting the following lines into the file SetEnvIfNoCase Content-Type \ "^multipart/form-data;" "MODSEC_NOPOSTBUFFERING=Do not buffer file uploads" mod_gzip_on No 2. "Performance Cache" enabled on OS X SERVER. If you're running OS X Server and the progress bar isn't working, it could be because of "performance caching." Apparently if ANY of your hosted sites are using performance caching, then by default, all sites (domains) will attempt to. The fix then is to disable the performance cache on all hosted sites.

  • Clear float issue

    I have a page with the standard navigation bar on the left and the content area taking up the rest of the horizontal area to its side. For modern browsers I am using table-row and table-cell values for the display attribute. However, for IE7 I included a conditional stylesheet that tries to float the nav bar. This works fine except when the content area itself has floated elements and I try to use clear. My goal is to displayed the clear element right after the content area floats but instead it gets shoved down below the nav area. The following demo code shows this issue.     I'm developing a form, and using jQuery UI Autocomplete. When the user selects an option, I want the selection to pop into a span appended to the parent <p> tag. Then I want the field to clear rather than be populated with the selection. I have the span appearing just fine, but I can't get the field to clear. How do you cancel jQuery UI Autocomplete's default select action? Here is my code: var availableTags = ["cheese", "milk", "dairy", "meat", "vegetables", "fruit", "grains"]; $("[id^=item-tag-]").autocomplete({ source: availableTags, select: function(){ var newTag = $(this).val(); $(this).val(""); $(this).parent().append("<span>" + newTag + "<a href=\"#\">[x]</a> </span>"); } }); Simply doing $(this).val(""); doesn't work. What is maddening is that almost the exact function works fine if I ignore autocomplete, and just take action when the user types a comma as such: $('[id^=item-tag-]').keyup(function(e) { if(e.keyCode == 188) { var newTag = $(this).val().slice(0,-1); $(this).val(''); $(this).parent().append("<span>" + newTag + "<a href=\"#\">[x]</a> </span>"); } }); The real end result is to get autocomplete to work with multiple selections. If anybody has any suggestions for that, they would be welcome.

  • Usage of static analysis tools - with Clear Case/Quest

    We are in the process of defining our software development process and wanted to get some feed back from the group about this topic. Our team is spread out - US, Canada and India - and I would like to put into place some simple standard rules that all teams will apply to their code. We make use of Clear Case/Quest and RAD I have been looking at PMD, CPP, checkstyle and FindBugs as a start. My thought is to just put these into ANT and have the developers run these manually. I realize doing this you have to have some trust in that each developer will do this. The other thought is to add in some builders in to the IDE which would run a subset of the rules (keep the build process light) and then add another set (heavy) when they check in the code. Some other ideals is to make use of something like Cruse Control and have it set up to run these static analysis tools along with the unit test when ever Clear Case/Quest is idle. Wondering if others have done this and if it was successfully or can provide lessons learned.

    I've written a webapp that has a manifest that includes all the javascript and images that it requires. Unfortunately, even when I change the manifest file, it doesn't seem to reload the javascript. Is there a way to delete the webapp completely from Chrome? Clearing the browser cache doesn't seem to work. I'm running Chrome 5.0.375.55 on a Mac. Any help very gratefully received.

  • Monitoring apache's caching.

    I'm running mod_mem_cache with mod_cache, but I don't seem to have any way of telling whether images are served from the cache or not, so I can't tell how well it's working. Is there some way of seeing via mod_status, adding cache status headers to responses or similar? The servers it's on are quite happily handling sustained loads of about 200 requests/sec, but I can't tell if/how much the caching is helping that.

  • Extending Jquery validate to show/hide div or clear div after validate is ran

    Right now i have all of my errors outputting to a div. Id like to catch the validate event and clear the div right before its ran of my old errors. Then id like to show/hide that div based on if it has any labels in it that were auto generated by the jquery validation plugin. I can do everything but figure out how to extend the event, run the stuff i need to, then call the validate function. Thanks!
