  • The Implications of Modern Day Software Development Abstractions

    I am currently doing a dissertation about the implications or dangers that today's software development practices or teachings may have on the long term effects of programming. Just to make it clear: I am not attacking the use abstractions in programming. Every programmer knows that abstractions are the bases for modularity. What I want to investigate with this dissertation are the positive and negative effects abstractions can have in software development. As regards the positive, I am sure that I can find many sources that can confirm this. But what about the negative effects of abstractions? Do you have any stories to share that talk about when certain abstractions failed on you? The main concern is that many programmers today are programming against abstractions without having the faintest idea of what the abstraction is doing under-the-covers. This may very well lead to bugs and bad design. So, in you're opinion, how important is it that programmers actually know what is going below the abstractions? Taking a simple example from Joel's Back to Basics, C's strcat: void strcat( char* dest, char* src ) { while (*dest) dest++; while (*dest++ = *src++); } The above function hosts the issue that if you are doing string concatenation, the function is always starting from the beginning of the dest pointer to find the null terminator character, whereas if you write the function as follows, you will return a pointer to where the concatenated string is, which in turn allows you to pass this new pointer to the concatenation function as the *dest parameter: char* mystrcat( char* dest, char* src ) { while (*dest) dest++; while (*dest++ = *src++); return --dest; } Now this is obviously a very simple as regards abstractions, but it is the same concept I shall be investigating. Finally, what do you think about the issue that schools are preferring to teach Java instead of C and Lisp ? Can you please give your opinions and your says as regards this subject?     Hi all, I'm a student in my first C++ programming class, and I'm working on a project where we have to create multiple custom exception classes, and then in one of our event handlers, use a try/catch block to handle them appropriately. My question is: How do I catch my multiple custom exceptions in my try/catch block? GetMessage() is a custom method in my exception classes that returns the exception explanation as a std::string.     I'm creating a site which I want to place content input form in custom themed template. I opted to do this because I wanted the whole site to be looked uniform. That said, I'm not sure as to what is the best approach to do this. Is it proper to invoke hook_insert/delete/update and hook_perm/hook_access by myself or is there anyway I can still use my custom theme and write a code in a way that drupal would take care of invoking appropriate hooks accordingly?   • Software Architecture and Design vs Psychology of HCI class

    I have two classes to choose from and I'm wanting to get an opinion from the more experienced game devs which might be better for someone who wants to be an indie game dev. The first is a Software Architecture and Design course and the second is a course titled Psychology of HCI. I've previously have taken a Software Design course that was focused only on design patterns. I've also taken an Introduction to HCI course. Software Architecture and Design Description Topics include software architectures, methodologies, model representations, component-based design ,patterns,frameworks, CASE-based desgins, and case studies. Psychology of HCI Description Exploration of psychological factors that interact with computer interface usablilty. Interface design techniques and usability evaluation methods are emphasized. I know I would find both interesting, but my concern is really which one might be easier to pick up on my own. I know HCI is relevant to game dev, but am un-sure if the topics in the Software Architecture class would be more for big software projects that go beyond the scope of games. Also, I'm not able to take both because the overlap.

  • IIS 404 custom error

    I've deployed an ASP.NET 3.5 app to a 64bit Windows 2003 R2 server. In the web.config I have the following <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="/404/"> <error statusCode="404" redirect="/404/"/> <error statusCode="500" redirect="/500/"/> </customErrors> In the website properties in IIS Manager I have set the 404 and 500 errors to Type = "URL" and the same URLs as in the web.config. I have a wildcard application map to the .NET 2.0 aspnet_isapi.dll with "Verify file exists" turned off. If I try to hit a fake .aspx file I successfully get sent to the 404 page. I belive this is because there is an explicit mapping for .aspx to the .NET DLL. If I try to access a fake directory I simply recieve a plain text response saying: The system cannot find the file specified. It would appear that these requests for directories are not being routed through the .NET pipeline, which is what I would expect (and need) to happen becuase of the wildcard application mapping. Any ideas?

  • Can unit tests verify software requirements?

    I have often heard unit tests help programmers build confidence in their software. But is it enough for verifying that software requirements are met? I am losing confidence that software is working just because the unit tests pass. We have experienced some failures in production deployment due to an untested\unverified execution path. These failures are sometimes quite large, impact business operations and often requires an immediate fix. The failure is very rarely traced back to a failing unit test. We have large unit test bodies that have reasonable line coverage but almost all of these focus on individual classes and not on their interactions. Manual testing seems to be ineffective because the software being worked on is typically large with many execution paths and many integration points with other software. It is very painful to manually test all of the functionality and it never seems to flush out all the bugs. Are we doing unit testing wrong when it seems we still are failing to verify the software correctly before deployment? Or do most shops have another layer of automated testing in addition to unit tests?

I think software should not only work but have a solid and elegant design too to be reusable and extensive to later purposes. Now I'm in search of some help figuring out good practices for specific problems. Actually, I'm trying to find out how to design a piece of software that would be extensible via plug-ins. The questions I have are the following: Should plug-ins be able to access each others functionality? This would bring dependencies I guess. What should the main application offer to the plug-ins if I want to let's say develop a multimedia software which would play videos and music but which could later on get functionality added over plug-ins that would let's say be able to read video status (time, bps, ...) and display it. Would this mean that the player itself would have to be part of the main program and offer services to plug-ins to get such information or would there be a way to develop the player as a plug-in also but offer in some way the possibility to other plug-ins to interact with it? As you see, my questions are mainly for learning purposes as I strive to improve my software development skills. I hope to find help here and apologize if something is wrong with my question.

  • Google Analytics: Custom variables issue difference in data

    We’ve set up tracking through custom variables in Google Analytics to measure which offices are getting the most traffic. The custom var consists out of the key (=office) and value = (office name). In our Custom Var tab in audience we get no data (actually we got 1 hit, but we think the data is way off). When we setup advanced segments with the filters on key and value we get the correct data. Now we are wondering why we aren’t getting that data in the custom var tab.

    A few years ago we decided to increase our investments in documenting retail processes and architectures.  There were several goals but the main two were to help retailers maximize the value they derive from our software and help system integrators implement our software faster.  The sale is only part of our success metric -- its actually more important that the customer realize the benefits of the software.  That's when we actually celebrate. This week many of our customers are gathered in Chicago to discuss their successes during our annual Crosstalk conference.  That provides the perfect forum to announce the release of the Oracle Retail Reference Library.  The RRL is available for free to Oracle Retail customers and partners.  It contains 1000s of hours of work and represents years of experience in the retail industry.  The Retail Reference Library is composed of three offerings: Retail Reference Model We've been sharing the RRM for several years now, with lots of accolades.  The RRM is a set of business process diagrams at varying levels of granularity. This release marks the debut of Visio documents, which should make it easier for retailers to adopt and edit the diagrams.  The processes represent an approximation of the Oracle Retail software, but at higher levels they are pretty generic and therefore usable with other software as well.  Using these processes, the business and IT are better able to communicate the expectations of the software.  They can be used to guide customization when necessary, and help identify areas for optimization in the organization.
