• Too Many Files In Debian Linux Folder?

  I've been using an external USB drive on a Debian server for backup. The drive is formatted as NTFS and mounted with ntsfmount. This was working fine, but I was filling up a directory with lots of files. Eventually the backup failed. When I then tried to look at the directory using ls it reported: ls: reading directory .: Numerical result out of range Looking in syslog, I also saw this: Sep 23 07:35:31 tosh ntfsmount[28040]: Failed to read index block: Numerical result out of range. Is this simply that I've reached the upper limit of number of files in a directory? If so, is there any way to extend the number of allowed files?

• Reenabling the Spotlight Menubar item in Mac OS X 10.6

  I believe I followed the instructions here to disable Spotlight indexing and remove the menubar item. I reenabled indexing just fine, but when I changed the permissions back to 744, the spotlight search position came back (as in the space it would normally occupy), but the actual icon and search box will not show up. If I click that portion of the screen I get a blue box, but I can't type anything in to anything. Currently, permissions look like this: [~]$ ll /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle.bak/Contents/MacOS/ total 648 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 835K Sep 17 14:48 Search* ll is an alias mapped to the following alias ll='${LS_PREAMBLE} -hl' with $LS_PREAMBLE [~]$ echo $LS_PREAMBLE ls -GF (Ignore the .bak extension. I decided that until I found a way to fully restore it, I would just remove it entirely following the directions here) That looks right to me and obviously something is launching, but the UI elements aren't there.   Hi. I really need help debugging an error I'm getting with Passenger on Apache. I've just made a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.4 and have Apache, Ruby and Passenger installed. • xubuntu 12.04 screen regularly stops refreshing, refreshing resumes after un-/re-maximizing a window

  My screen frequently stops completely refreshing. I can make it resume refreshing by un-maximizing/re-maximize a window or by switching workspace (the un-/re-maximizing works every time. Switching workspace sometimes has to be done a couple of times). The immediate impression is that the system is frozen: there is apparently no reaction to anything I do but interestingly window title bar will change, if I switch application with (i.e alt+tab or browse through folders) I saw an identical issue in ubuntu 10.04, though a lot less frequent, I never saw this in ubuntu 12.04 (which I have been using the last 4-5 months). After switching to Xubuntu I'm seeing this again and more frequently. The specific reason I'm not sure this is a bug: I installed gnome-control-center which dragged in tons of packages. This was while trying to fix dual-screen setup. I believe the issue surfaced after this. I later meticulously removed every package from this batch (purge) in the hope that every setting would also be removed. But the issue has persisted. Another issue happened at the same time, it may be totally unrelated but it feels as if it is the same basic issue: the screen resolution of the greeter became less than the expected 1680x1050 and often after login there's just a blank and totally unresponsive wallpaper without panel so I have to force reboot. When the login is successful it's very clear that it works hard to determine the correct resolution which is achieved after a few blink to black screens. My questions: 1) Is this a settings issue or a bug? 2) How do I begin to research the issue - could I perhaps some way reset xubuntu/xfce to default. 3) If this is a bug where would be the most appropriate place report this? • sudo suddenly stopped working on debian

  I've been using 'sudo ' since I setup my server about a week ago. It suddently stopped working with no explanation. I am in 'sudo' group. So there should be no config change required to /etc/sudoers $ sudo apt-get install tsocks [sudo] password for me: me is not in the sudoers file. root@host:/etc# groups me me : me sudo The only thing it could possibly be related to was I added the following line to sshd_config: PermitRootLogin without-password But I have since changed that back to PermitRootLogin yes Permission on file is 400: ls -l /etc/sudoers -r--r----- 1 root root 491 Sep 28 21:52 /etc/sudoers No idea why it stopped working, or how to fix it.

• Cannot establish ssh connection to computer on local network

  I've just (re)installed ubuntu 11.10 on my main pc, and the connection times out every time I try to ssh connect to my laptop (over the local network) to retrieve the files I backed up there. The connection times out every time I try to connect. I can establish a connection in the other direction without issue. EDIT: posted wrong logs last time. They just showed that there was a connection received, they weren't actually the sshd logs (which were in auth.log as I recently discovered). Unfortunately, that log is filling up with extremely weird error messages and it gives me no information about the connection. • XAMPP Closes the connection

  I want my XAMPP Apache server to host a file (The file is around 250mb) but the server closes the connection and won't let me download the file? Does xampp or apache have any download size limit or something? Tested with a smaller file , the problem is still present. It just doesn't let me download any file from the server.!!! • Wireless Bridge -DHCP

  I was thinking of picking up a couple of TP-Link wireless routers, and setting them to bridge. I have a sep. LAN network that would have one of them, and I'd put one on my internet connection. Would I be able to keep my current IP subnets? (255.255.255.0 and 255.0.0.0) or would I have to pull my IPs from the same IP range. (I want to keep my current DHCP servers in place) The reason I want a bridge is so that I can VPN into the internal network.

• Blurred refurbished TFT

  I got 3 refurbished PC+TFT 19". All TFT shows a very blurry image. I estimate the TFT's are 2-3 yrs old. The PC's running Windows7 Pro. The resolution is set to the TFT native values. It could be possible that all TFT's are broken but I have similiar models that are up to 5 yrs old, without any issue. I still think it could be a config issue but from the hardware it is possible that a TFT get broken I shows up a very blurry image. Update TFT HP 2035, grafic Intel Q35/GMA 3100, analog D-SUB connector, Manuf. date Sep 2005. Config. resolution 1600x1200, PPP 150% Without ClearType it is worst. Desktop Icon titles seems to be good and clear. But in Notepad for example the effect is that on the right of the characters is a pinky shadow.

• Arguments for discouraging satellite sites?

  I am working with a client who's read about satellite sites on a SEP book and has been building hundreds of keyword reach domains (buytoyotacorona1989cheap.com, brandnewsuvinred.com) with specific content about such domains. They all link to a main domain (CompanyName.com) where most of the information is either repeated(from other sites) or new. I told him to drop all the other domains and only focus on building good content for the main site as it is too difficult to maintain so many websites, plus they might look like link farms to Google. He told me to make a Google search for "Buy Toyota cheap " and two of his websites were listed among top 10. So it's seem to be doing some good, but I get the feeling that what he is doing is wrong. What other arguments are there to discourage this practice? or is he doing the right thing? My arguments have helped him to decide go down from hundreds to close to one hundred (because cost of maintainance) but I believe he should only have one or two sites. PS: The business is not actually about cars.

• Python RSS Feeder + Jquery RSS Reader

  I'm trying to implement an RSS Feeder in python using PyRSS2Gen and it created an XML file. Now in jQuery I'm using Google Ajax API's RSS reader and trying to read it. I get an error saying something is wrong. I'm unable to figure out the issue. I've checked some documentation but not able to get it. But it doesn't work :( I've looked in EXSLT stylesheet and it has got the logic to do that. Also there is logic to display the name of the week for a day using 'E' pattern, which doesn't work for me.   I have received an email that has no content, just a file called smime.p7m attached. I was looking into the OpenSSL and it's smime module but I cannot figure out exactly how. I must be doing something wrong. I extracted the certificate chain form the p7m file. # openssl pkcs7 -inform DER -in smime.p7m -out pkcs7.pem # openssl pkcs7 -in pkcs7.pem -print_certs -out certs.pem Then I tried to decrypt: # openssl smime -decrypt -in smime.p7m -signer certs.pem -out smime.eml No recipient certificate or key specified And also with my server's SSL cert: # openssl smime -decrypt -in smime.p7m -recip server.nopass.key.crt.ca.pem -out smime.eml Error reading S/MIME message 140078540371784:error:0D0D40D1:asn1 encoding routines:SMIME_read_ASN1:no content type:asn_mime.c:447: Can anyone shed some light on what steps I need to take to extract the email?

• Using SSL with Openfire

  I'm having a rough time getting SSL configured properly on an Openfire install. Quite honestly, I just don't know what to do. It seems convoluted on the steps necessary to get a cert imported. Has anyone out there successfully done this? I'm running Openfire 3.6.4 on Server2003 R2. I have a signed UC cert which is ready to roll, I just don't know what to do with it. I've been through tons of tutorials on converting from .crt to .der to .pem, using openssl and java tools, but its only getting more confusing as I go.

• How do I make zeitgeist work in Arch?

  I've been trying to setup Zeitgeist on my Gnome-shell system for a couple of days, but I'm yet to get it to work. I've done everything I could think of, i.e. installing zeitgeist from [extra], as well as libqzeitgeist. I've also installed all Gnome extensions created by Seif (https://extensions.gnome.org/accounts/profile/seif), since they're the reason I'm installing the package in the first place. I've tried running "zeitgeist-daemon --replace" and then "gnome-shell --replace", but nothing seems to work. According to Der Harm's wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Der_harm#Gnome_Zeitgeist), the Zeitgeist daemon doesn't need to be explicitly started, but even if it was, I don't know how to do it (since it's not in /etc/rc.d, I bet adding "zeitgeist" to my rc.conf wouldn't do any good either). I can't believe there isn't a very simple setup here, please help me see what I'm missing!
