  PostgreSql 9.3 allows us to declare parameter types to match column types, aka Copying Types. Also it allows us to omit the length of VARCHAR fields, without any performance penalty. These two features make PostgreSql a great back end for agile development, because they make PL/PgSql more resilient to changes. Both features are not in SQL Server 2008 R2. • Missed question in technical phone interview and the follow up letter

  I may have just bombed a C++ technical phone interview. The interviewer asked mostly about data structures and I was able to go into detail about each of the data structures he asked about. Score one for me I'm thinking. Wrong. Then he asks to join me on a collaboration website where he can see what I am typing. This was the same process as interview #1 which went well, not perfect, but well. So the question was: How do you reverse a linked list? he gave a function prototype similar to Node *reverse(Node *head) I struggled with this for about 10-15 minutes until the hour was up. I was able to get the general idea across but was not able to reverse the link list. My question is that after remembering the answer post interview do I mention this in the thank you letter, if I even should write one?

In this talk, I discussed a Master/Detail application that runs on Android 2.2 devices and forward. I used the Actionbar compat Android library to allow the older devices to have an actionbar. I also used a SQLite database for my data.   Where can I find good (well organized) examples of game code? I'm hoping that I can pick up some organizational tips. Most examples in books are too short and leave out lots of detail for the sake of brevity. I'm particularly interested on how to group your variables and methods so that another programmer would know where to look in the code. For example initializers at the top, then methods that take input, then methods that update views. I don't care about a particular language, as long as its OOP. I looked at the Quake 2 and 3 sources, but they're straight C and not much help for getting tips on organizing your objects. So, have you seen some good source? Any pointers to code that makes you say "wow, that's well organized" would be great.

• WSS Fails Installing On Step 5 Of The SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard

  I've attempted to install WSS 3.0 with SP1 several times as both stand-alone and server farm with no luck on Windows Server 2008.  When I get to step 5 of Configuration wizard it begin installing and publishing services but on Step 5 I get the message "Failed To Register Sharepoint Services". The detail behind this message reads "An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException was thrown". Then I Run the command psconfig -cmd configdb -create -database <whatever_unique_name> Click on Start / All Programs / Administrative Tools / SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard Should work now (it did with me). PS: This was done on a Virtual Machine (VMware)

  I rotate each piece by rotation formula. More detail, because rotation angle is 90 so : xNew = y; yNew = -x; But my method has met two problems : 1) Out of box : each type of pieces is fit in square 4x4. (0,0 at under left) But by this rotation, at some case they will out of this box. For example, there is a point with coordinate (5,6) So, please help me how to fit these coordinate into 4x4 box again, or give me another formula for this. 2) at I case : (4 squares at same row or same column), just has two rotations case. but in method above, they still has 4 pieces. So, how to prevent this. Thanks :)

  I heard Google has a giant private (internal) repository of all of their code and their employees have access to it so that when they are developing things they don't have to reinvent the wheel. I'd like to know more about it! Is there anyone here from Google that can describe it in a bit more detail, or do you know a bit more about it? I'm interested in knowing mainly about how it's organized and how they can make it easy for an employee to find something in such a giant codebase as it must be.

  Lately I've been doing a lot of debugging using the System Output tracing in WebCenter Content 11g.  This is built-in tracing in the content server which provides a great level of detail on what's happening under the hood.  You can access the settings as well as a view of the tracing by going to Administration -> System Audit Information.  From here, you can select the tracing sections to include.  Some of my personal favorites are searchquery,  systemdatabase, userstorage, and indexer.  Usually I'm trying to find out some information regarding a search, database query, or user information.  Besides debugging, it's also very helpful for performance tuning.   I'm attempting too develop a 3rd party application to make it easy to import 3d model part's into my mod for skyrim the plan was to have a fileviewer and preview window of the nif model but since , I don't know what the NIF file format actually is or where to get the vertex data from it or the hole nine yards of parsing a text file in detail I'm at a lost what to do. • Why does the use of interface-based programming appear to be limited to behaviour?

  I have been doing a little thinking about inheritance vs. realization vs. composition. I am not about to post the whole detail here. So I was wondering, when are not talking about supporting unit testing: Why does interface-based programming seem to focus upon the grouping of common behaviour, e.g., IPettable (for an animal), IEditable (for a user control), ISubmitable (for a form), etc. Why does the use of interface-based programming appear to be limited to behaviour when we could pragmatically group not so much on behaviour but on commonsense physical similarities which could have nothing to do with behaviour? It is not that there is some limiting feature within OOP; so how come?

• Processing a stream. Must layers be violated?

  Theoretical situation: One trillion foobars are stored in a text file (no fancy databases). Each foobar must have some business logic executed on it. A set of 1 trillion will not fit in memory so the data layer cannot return a big set to the business layer. Instead they are to be streamed in 1 foobar at a time, and have business logic execute on 1 foobar at a time. The stream must be closed when finished. In order for the stream to be closed the business layer must close the stream (a data operation detail), thus violating the separation of concerns. Is it possible to incrementally process data without violating layers?

  The size (in bytes) of games have been growing over time. There are probably many factors contributing to this: trailer/cut scene videos being bundled with the game, more and higher-quality audio, multiple levels of detail being used, etc. What I'd really like to know is how the size of 3D models and textures that games ship with have changed over time. For example, if one were to look at the size of meshes and textures for Quake I (1996), Quake II (1997), Quake III: Arena (1999), Quake 4 (2005), and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (2007), I'd imagine a steady increase in file size. Does anyone know of a data source for numbers like this?

• Any patent issue if I want to call my classes "signal/slot" as in Qt?

  I need to code a signal-like mechanism and I was thinking of using the same "slot" and "signal" terms to indicate the signal and the function that needs to be called. Since this is a commercial application I'd like to know if there might be any issue with using these names, e.g. if Qt has some sort of patent on them (I searched around but couldn't find it). I believe this is a stupid question since patenting a class name would be moronic, to say the least.. but anyway... To add some detail: my code is ENTIRELY different and has NOTHING TO DO with Qt except the above. I don't use moc or any Qt class.

  my specs intel mb dh67cl corsair 4gb ram nvidia 560ti gtx i5 processor dell 22" monitor 1920x1080 firstly, i began using ubuntu last year. now im in love with it. just one minor detail i dont like is that the bootscreen changed just after the first boot. now im using 12.04.1. i will explain how it happened. first i installed ubuntu via windows. so it booted for the first time and life was beautiful. the resolution was 1920x1080. then i installed the nvidia drivers, all the updates and codecs for the medias. now the ubuntu bootscreen downscaled to a lower resolution. i tried searching for answers, but nothing was for ubuntu 12.04.1. since im a newbie, i didnt want to take any chances. i need help. i like the bootscreen.

  I often have to deal with customers or users which are reporting errors in applications. Most of the time their content is something useless as ERROR!!! x does not work without much more information. For resolving the issue I have to request every single detail of them, which often is more time consuming than fixing the issue itself. Other send information in formats which are not ideal, like screenshots (of data records, not of errors) although they could send a link (we have access to the systems) and so on. How do you tell your users/customers to describe the problems with more details so that the whole process could be easier for both sides? edit This question is more about the social skills, than how to achieve programmatic collection of logs and error information. I'm aware of the fact that this should be part of good software design.

  For example, I've got a root object exposed in a SOA service, say Invoice (Invoice has line items as children). Sometimes, I need to retrieve its detail line items. I'm thinking to make it lazy loading, because it's a traffic overhead to transfer line items every time Invoice is required. But in SOA fashion, it seems unlikely. Because all it can expose are Invoice POCOs, with contain no logic. Thus I cannot attach my lazy loading logic to Invoice to instruct it to load lines items when needed.

• Unneeded RAID recovery

  I have two software RAID 5s. Today when I turned on my server (after it was off for two weeks when I was on vacation), I got the message that the software RAID is degraded and was offered RAID recovery console or boot degraded. No idea what to do in that recovery console btw, so I just exited it. After the boot finished normally I took a peak at /proc/mdstat but there is nothing amiss there. So I took a look at mdadm --detail /dev/md0 (and md1) and again everything looks fine with Failed Devices being 0 both times. Next I took a look at smartctl --alll /dev/sdX for all of the drives and Reallocated_Sector_Ct is 0. (Lots of other zeros, all numbers look to me fine) Anybody have any ideas why I'm getting the RAID recovery message on boot when nothing seems bad?
