• Does Ubuntu run well on an USB HDD?

  I have here a company notebook, and because the HDD is full encrypted, I cannot install an extra partition for another system that I would like to use in my free time. And I really need another system, because this crap Windows here with that much of anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-whatever on it is so slow and annoying. What can I do? I could use an external USB HDD with another system. Because I would like to handle big files and so on, I don't want to use a USB stick. A USB 2.5 HDD + Ubuntu is what I think the best option. Here are my questions: Do I have to note something? Does Ubuntu run well on an external HDD? Do I have big performance problems (because of the USB HDD)? Should I buy a very fast HDD for much money or it is not that important? Any suggestions?

• Can a plug-in access a database server?

  At my work place, we use an external client's web application monitor and respond to support tickets of our clients. the problem with that application is that it does not house a field to enter the actual effort (hours worked on a particular ticket) to be stored in the database. What is needed to write a plug-in for Internet Explorer that would get triggered on a button click on a certain webpage and save some data in an external database? That is, if the support personnel is closing the ticket after resolving it, is it possible to invoke that plugin that asks the personnel to enter the effort spent on that ticket and store it in an external database? We can't modify the web application as it is vendor supplied and not an in-house product.

  A question about upstart. I understand the restart command does a stop and restart of the process. What happens if the process will not stop and check for the signals for a long time (20min or 2h)? Will it still restart after such a long time ? Example my-process: until stop_signal_received work for 2h end So the script will check for stop signals every 2 hours. $sudo restart my-process Will the process restart after 2 hours or not?

  Is there any way to zoom in, in the System Internals Process Explorer graph? Background I'm trying to work out why my PC freezes/locks up for about a second (the pointer does not move) every so often. This has only been happening for the last 2 days. There is a very narrow spike associated with the freeze, but it's hard to hover over it an analyse what is causing it. • How to open the built-in task manager when it's replaced by Process Explorer?

  I want to open the built-in task manager with Process Explorer's Replace Task Manager option checked. I've tried: Running taskmgr.exe from the run dialog. PE was opened instead. Creating a copy of taskmgr.exe in the same folder. Then run it. The built-in task manager was opened, but not working properly(its window was blank). Creating a symbolic link (using mklink) of taskmgr.exe in the same folder. Then run it. PE was opened instead. Is there any other method I can try? Thanks.

• New Release of Oracle EPM (Enterprise Performance Management)

  I'm a huge fan of Hyperion products and consider Hyperion to be one of the best acquisitions Oracle has made in terms of applications. So I am really excited to talk about their latest release, Release 11.1.2 of the Oracle EPM System. This is EPM's largest release in 2 years, and it's jam-packed with new modules and features. In terms of brand new products, there are three: 1. Public Sector Planning and Budgeting meets the needs of public sector agencies, higher education, governments, etc. that have complex budget requirements. It supports position or employee-based budgeting and integrates with MS Office and your ERP ledgers to perform commitment control. 2. Hyperion Financial Close Management is a complete financial close solution that orchestrates the entire close process from subledgers and general ledger to financial reporting and disclosure submissions. And of course, it is integrated with GL systems and consolidation systems. I saw a demo of this and it looked pretty slick. They have this unified close calendar that looks like a regular calendar that gives each person participating in the close process a task list. It comes with a Gantt chart that shows the relationships and dependencies among closing tasks. There are dashboards to allow you to track the close progress and completion of tasks as well as perform trend analysis and see how much time is being spent on different activities in the close process. This gives you visibility that you never had before to understand where the bottlenecks are and where improvements could be made. I think what I liked best about this product was that it provides a central place for all participants to communicate their progress. When I worked as an Accountant, we used ad hoc tools, such as spreadsheets, Word documents, emails, and phone calls during the close process. I like the idea of having a central system to track the overall progress as well as automate the entire financial close process. Who knows, maybe Accountants won't have to revolve their lives around the month end close anymore with a tool like this. Those periodic fire drills can become predictable, well managed processes. 3. Disclosure Management is an out-of-the-box, pre-packaged XBRL solution to meet statutory reporting requirements. This product is really going to help companies improve the timeliness of producing financial reports. Reports can be authored using MS Word and Excel and then XBRL instance documents can be produced with its embedded XBRL tags. It even supports footnotes and disclosures of non-financial information. With a product like this, companies no longer have to outsource their XBRL filing; they can bring it back in house to save costs and time. In terms of other enhancements, they have ERP Integrator that provides integration and drill downs from Hyperion products to source systems, such as Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, and SAP. No other vendor offers this level of integration. There's also a new product that links Oracle Essbase directly to Hyperion Financial Management for internal financial reporting, and new integrations between Hyperion Financial Management and Oracle's GRC products. They also improved the usability of Oracle Hyperion Planning. They made it much easier for end users to use the system via the web or via MS Excel when submitting plans and budgets. It is also integrated with intelligent approval workflows that are data-driven, user-configurable, and scenario-specific to efficiently streamline the budgeting process. • Active Directory on local server and intranet on external server.

  I have a local Active Directory server and a external web server where my intranet is located. $ad = ldap_connect("ldap://ip-address") or die("Couldn't connect to AD!"); ldap_set_option($ad, LDAP_OPT_PROTOCOL_VERSION, 3); $bd = ldap_bind( $ad, "user@domain", "password") or die("Can't bind to server."); When I run this on a local web server it succesfully binds the connection. If I run the same code on the external server its unable to bind the ldap connection. Both port 389 and 636 is open on the AD server. I've tried google for an answer, but all the tutorials is for Active Directory and webserver on the same server. Is this even possible?

  Borland Developer Studio 2006, Delphi: I have a TOLEContainer object with AllowInPlace=False. When the external editor is closed and changed my OLE object I have to do something with this OLE object inside TOLeContainer. The problem is I can't catch a moment when the external editor is closed. OnDeactivate event is not working. Probably I should change the source code of TOLEContainer adding this event myself, but I don't know where is the best place for it. Can you advice some method?

• RSpec setup for an application that depends on an external database from another application.

  I've had to add features to an application that depends on a database from another application. I've been able to set up a connection to this external database and pull data from it. However, I'm not sure how to get my main application to create a test database for this external application. It would be awesome if there some way to pull in the schema for this database and create it in the same manner that 'rake db:test:prepare' does. Is there any configuration capabilities for RSpec to do this, or will I have to roll my own task?

  Is there an easy way to get metrics on all processes that start with the letters XYZ? I have about 80 processes that I have to monitor individually that all start with the prefix XYZ. I have created a query using the sigar shell: ps State.Name.sw=XYZ, which will give me a list of the processes that I want. What I need to do is define this list of processes through said query and collect and track statistics from the Process service: http://support.hyperic.com/display/hypcomm/Process+service What I need is 3 or 4 key statistics for each of the XYZ processes defined by my query to show up as graphs in the web front end. Note: Hyperic HQ server is installed on a windows machine and I'm monitoring a Linux box via an agent. • How can I boot Ubuntu 10.04 on my MacBook Pro from a USB hard drive?

  I installed Ubuntu 10.04 to my MacBook Pro (not the latest gen with i7, but one before that) on an external, USB harddrive (GRUB installed to the external as well). When I hold down the option key to try to select the external, it doesn't show up. After some looking around, my understanding is that it won't boot 'unsupported' operating system from an external drive. I have ran OSX from an external when I upgraded my harddrive. What can I do (or is it even possible) to allow my MacBook Pro to boot the Ubuntu drive?

• Root cause for high CPU usage; which measurement to trust more: Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer?

  Consider this Windows 8.1 machine (in-place upgrade from Windows 8) with differing reports on its CPU usage. The machine is idle, and has been for 3 days. There are no CPU intensive tasks running currently nor over the 3 day idle period. Windows Task Manager is reporting CPU usage constantly at an incredibly high value (and increasing over time!) at around 75%. Process Explorer from SysInternals reports that the CPU usage is much different at around 42% How does Process Explorer report 42.14% usage, but its columns report Idle at 57%, with the sum of the other processes not even approaching 10%? Which of these two values should I trust more, and why should it be trusted over the other measurement? How can I actually determine which process is causing Task Manager to report its values?   If you open up Task Manager or Process Explorer on your system, you will see many services running. But how much of an impact can a service have on your system, especially if it is ‘corrupted’ by malware? Today’s SuperUser Q&A post has the answers to a curious reader’s questions. Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader Forivin wants to know how much impact a service can have on a Windows system, especially if it is ‘corrupted’ by malware: What kind malware/spyware could someone put into a service that does not have its own process on Windows? I mean services that use svchost.exe for example, like this: Could a service spy on my keyboard input? Take screenshots? Send and/or receive data over the internet? Infect other processes or files? Delete files? Kill processes? How much impact could a service have on a Windows installation? Are there any limits to what a malware ‘corrupted’ service could do? The Answer SuperUser contributor Keltari has the answer for us: What is a service? A service is an application, no more, no less. The advantage is that a service can run without a user session. This allows things like databases, backups, the ability to login, etc. to run when needed and without a user logged in. What is svchost? According to Microsoft: “svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries”. Could we have that in English please? Some time ago, Microsoft started moving all of the functionality from internal Windows services into .dll files instead of .exe files. From a programming perspective, this makes more sense for reusability…but the problem is that you can not launch a .dll file directly from Windows, it has to be loaded up from a running executable (exe). Thus the svchost.exe process was born. So, essentially a service which uses svchost is just calling a .dll and can do pretty much anything with the right credentials and/or permissions. If I remember correctly, there are viruses and other malware that do hide behind the svchost process, or name the executable svchost.exe to avoid detection. Have something to add to the explanation? It seems that I have two cmdlets called Start-Process installed and I'm guessing one is the original and the other is from PSCX. When I invoke Start-Process, the PSCX cmdlet is made to run. How can I make PowerShell run the original version instead? • How to "un-automount" external harddrive?

  So I dualboot 12.10 and Win7. Both OSs are on the primary SSD while all commonly used data (documents, movies, music, profiles etc) is on a secondary NTFS-formatted HDD. Since I needed the NTFS drive to automatically mount in Ubuntu right at startup, I downloaded ntfs-config and set it to automount my NTFS drive. Problem is, I also accidentally told it to automount my external hard drive (which is also NTFS formatted). When booting up Ubuntu, it now checks for the presence of that drive every single time, which is getting annoying 'cause I don't always have it connected. I've tried un- and reinstalling ntfs-config, telling it to not automount the external HD, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

• Improving the performance of a db import process

  I have a program in Microsoft Access that processes text and also inserts data in MySQL database. This operation takes 30 mins or less to finished. I translated it into VB.NET and it takes 2 hours to finish. The program goes like this: A text file contains individual swipe from a corresponding person, it contains their id, time and date of swipe in the machine, and an indicator if it is a time-in or a time-out. I process this text, segregate the information and insert the time-in and time-out per row. I also check if there are double occurrences in the database. After checking, I simply merge the time-in and time-out of the corresponding person into one row only. This process takes 2 hours to finished in VB.NET considering I have a table to compare which contains 600,000+ rows. Now, I read in the internet that python is best in text processing, i already have a test but i doubt in database operation. What do you think is the best programming language for this kind of problem? How can I speed up the process? My first idea was using python instead of VB.NET, but since people here telling me here on SO that this most probably won't help I am searching for different solutions.

• Uninstall ubuntu from external hard drive + remove bootloader from internal hd

  I have created a bootable usb stick with linuxlive and Ubuntu.I then tried to install ubuntu on my external harddrive. However I guess I wrongly picked the drive where the boot section is installed, it now is installed on my internal (C:) drive. When I open the bios bootsequence it says Ubuntu 2 times? As if the boot is installed twice? I'd like to uninstall Ubuntu from my external drive but most important: I don't want Grub to be start up on my PC. I tried booting in Windows 8 recovery mode and used the following commands: bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot However the ubuntu choices wont disappear? I then tried to add bootrec /scanos and bootrec /rebuildbcd to the commands but somehow this wont work either. Anyone got some ideas? Thank you in advance! Best regards, Bart
