• Humor in Documentation

  Is a small amount of lighthearted wording or humor acceptable in source code documentation? For example, I have an algorithm that has a message hop around a graph (network) until its path forms a cycle. When this happens it is removed from the queue of the node it last resided on which removes it from memory. I write that in a comment, and finish the comment with "Rest in peace, little guy". That serves very little documenting purpose, but it cheers me up a bit, and I imagine it might cheer up other people I'm working with as they read through the code. Is this an acceptable practice, or should my in-code documentation resemble as much as possible the speeches of 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry? ;-)

  I have noticed that this is a frequent issue among younglings from technical areas such as ours. In the beginning of our careers we simply don't know how to sell ourselves to our employers, and random guy #57 (who is a programmer, but not as good as you - technically) ends up getting a raise/promotion just because he knows how to communicate and market himself better than you. Many have probably seen this happen in the past, and most certainly many more will in the future. What kind of skill/ability (either technical, or of other nature) do you think is relevant to point out when doing a job interview or asking for a raise, besides listing all the programming languages and libraries you know?

• Disable incognito in chrome or chromium

  I'm addicted to certain websites to the point where it's interfering with my life regularly and sick of it. I want to install website blockers that aren't easy to circumvent. In Chrome, incognito mode is easily accessible with a ctrl-shift-n. That is ridiculous. Whenever I feel an urge to go on an addictive website, it doesn't matter what blockers and regulators I've got installed; three keys can get round them in a second. Simply uninstalling chrome isn't an option either, as it's way too easy to sudo apt-get install it right back. So yes, I want to disable incognito mode completely (and if possible making it totally impossible to get it back). I note that some guy has figured out how to do it on windows with a registry entry: http://wmwood.net/software/incognito-gone-get-rid-of-private-browsing/ If it can be done on windows it can be done on ubuntu!

• Entity type for freelance programmer

  I am a freelance programmer just getting started. I have been running the last 6 months just as a sole prop. I am beginning to wonder if this is wise or if I had maybe better consider LLC or something. I am working alone and generally have a good relationship with my clients. I'm not asking for legal advice, I have a basic understanding of the advantages of the different setups, but rather for some experienced suggestions. Is an LLC worth the effort for just guy working by himself? What "on the ground" (not tax) advantages would I have as an LLC? Am I wide open to be sued as a sole prop?

• Questions about software licensing

  I've been having a discussion about licensing and open source software. Basically - the other guy is saying that licensing is easy, if you're going to build a product you can use an (any) open source project and make money by selling that code. My issue is that say I create a website or app with a project that uses a GPL license the restrictions aren't so straight forward - correct me if i'm wrong on each of these scenarios: 1 - i create an iPhone app using GPL code and put that app into the appstore - the code must be freely available to people buying that app. 2 - i create a website that my client hosts - they must have access to the code. 3 - i create a website as SaaS that my client "leases" but does not own - though it is hosted on their infrastructure - they must have access to that code Am i right on each of those assumptions? Are there any other issues i should be aware of under any other licensing terms for other licenses?

• How do I keep co-worker from writing horrible code? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I approach a coworker about his or her code quality? I can handle the for in.. without the hasOwnProperty filtering. I can handle the blatant disregard for the libraries I've used in the past and just using something else. I can even handle the functions with 25 parameters. But I can't handle this. var trips = new Array(); var flights = new Array(); var passengers = new Array(); var persons = new Array(); var requests = new Array(); I've submitted documents on code style, had code reviews, gave him Douglas Crockford's book, shown him presentations, other peoples githubs, etc. He still show the same horrible Javascript style. • How do I pitch ASP.NET over PHP to a potential client?

  I work at a Microsoft shop doing mainly web development. We had a client who asked us to review (improve) the data model for his web app, but said that he wants to develop his app in PHP (he knows "a guy" who can do it). When I asked him why he wants to go with PHP, he gave me the standard set of arguments from the 90's: Microsoft is evil, and PHP is free Writing an ASP.NET app is more expensive (software-wise) Why would Facebook use PHP if it was a bad idea? [classic] He had a few more comments about the costs associated with going .NET. The truth is that "Microsoft is expensive" does not hold water any longer, with their "Express" suite, you can develop an ASP.NET app without paying anything for software. When it comes to hosting, you can save a few bucks with PHP over .NET, but that's a small fraction of the projected development costs (we quoted 10-15k). Going back to my question, what arguments would I give to a client in favor of ASP.NET over PHP? [please provide sources for quantitative claims]

• How can I generate signed distance fields (2D) in real time, fast?

  In a previous question, it was suggested that signed distance fields can be precomputed, loaded at runtime and then used from there. For reasons I will explain at the end of this question (for people interested), I need to create the distance fields in real time. There are some papers out there for different methods which are supposed to be viable in real-time environments, such as methods for Chamfer distance transforms and Voronoi diagram-approximation based transforms (as suggested in this presentation by the Pixeljunk Shooter dev guy), but I (and thus can be assumed a lot of other people) have a very hard time actually putting them to use, since they're usually long, largely bloated with math and not very algorithmic in their explanation. What algorithm would you suggest for creating the distance fields in real-time (favourably on the GPU) especially considering the resulting quality of the distance fields? Since I'm looking for an actual explanation/tutorial as opposed to a link to just another paper or slide, this question will receive a bounty once it's eligible for one :-). • How to restruct RAID 10?

  We would like to alter the partition without losing data. Here is the sketch of the plan. I am wondering if it is doable using mdadm; and if so, please kindly point some reference on how to carry out the following steps. For RAID 10, there are four disks used. (1 2)(3 4) The idea is to work on 1 and 3 while keeping 2 and 4 as backup. 1: break RAID 10 into two arrays of RAID 0 => (1 3) (2 4) (how to?) 2: re-partition and format (1 3) 3: copy data from (2 4) to (1 3) 4: re-partition and format (2 4) exactly as (1 3) 5: join (2 4) with (1 3) to form RAID 10 (how to?) • What companies do what I'm interested in?

  I'm a systems guy. People change their concentrations to avoid taking operating systems, while I took it during my first semester after transferring. I'm taking compilers and networks now, and I think they're awesome. And yet there are so many job postings looking for people to do work in things like web development, and so few postings looking for people to work in kernel hacking or network engineering. What sorts of companies do these things? I'm currently awaiting a contract in the mail for an internship with VMWare, so I'm not out of a job for the summer. Still, I'd like to companies do these things.

• Contract Programming - Deposit % and Payment Methods? Any advice is appreciated

  I'm pretty new to doing contract work and finally landed a decent paying project. The guy actually offered to put down a deposit and I'm just wondering what percentage I should consider asking for. I was thinking around 25% since its not a terribly large project (only about 20 hours). Also, I can't use PayPal (have had a terrible experience with them freezing funds for no good reason) so I'm wondering if anyone can suggest other methods for the client to send the deposit / payment. I want to make it as easy as possible for them.. thanks for any advice

• LightScythe Creates Huge Light Paintings

  Earlier this year we showed you how an LED POV staff could be used to visualize network data. This build takes it to another level and allows you to imprint entire words and images into photos. Gavin, a hardware hacker from Sydney, built an open-source POV (persistence of vision) staff after the Wi-Fi visualizer inspired him to begin playing with large POV builds. He built his POV staff using LED strips, wireless controllers, and a laptop to send the signals at the proper intervals to the staff. • Lock Pages in Memory - not deprecated in Denali

  Please note an error in the SQL 2012 documentation for Lock Pages in Memory which indicates that it's deprecated. It's not. Locking pages in memory is a useful feature and there are no plans to deprecate it. It looks like it was accidently included on this page when we made changes to deprecate AWE. • Creating your own computer! [closed]

  I recently found this article on a guy that built his own computer. It's just a bunch of wire (as far as I can tell any way) and I was just wondering what would I have to learn/read/do to make such a thing (or at least to have a really basic understanding of what he did). He also made his own operating system, which I find really impressive. I know it will take a while and I am in no hurry. Note: I am a web programmer and also have done some desktop apps (a few years ago).

• Someone erased the mac os x with ubuntu, how do i get it back?

  so for a further detail about this, my friend has a macbook pro thats all i know about it specfically aside from the fact it was running os x lion. before this guy got a hold of the computer that he knows, I could hit the command key and the R key to get to the disk utilities and what-not to install OS X Lion on it, but now since whomever my friend let touch th mac, i no longer and do any of the start-up keys for it.. I've been trying to geth the mac os x lion on there and im having no luck what-so-ever, if anyone could help me with this i would be greatly appreciative... if you need anymore info that i may be able to provide please feel free to ask. thank you again.

  I search all around the internet till the 6th page of result on google with very precise search, but I can't figure how I can do that. I'm working with last updated ubuntu 12.04 and gnome shell, and I wonder how I can REMOVE and I say remove not clear or avoid feeding but remove completly the "recent item" bookmark you can see in the standard save windows of gnome shell here's a picture (in french it's "Récemment utilisés"): Sorry not enought point to post image to see what I talk about, just do that: -open gedit -type anything -save your file -Now that windows got a "recent item" and I want it DOWN I cannot reward point, but I would if I could for the guy finding a solution, and a bonus point if you find a way to remove it every where it appears in gnome shell. First, here's some background, we got some experienced developers and we also got new hires with almost zero programming practice. we'd like to perform fast and short iterations to release our product. we all team members locate at same site. The advantages of code review before commit I've learned, mentor new hires try to prevent errors, failures, bad designs in early developing cycle learn from others knowledge backup if someone quits But I also got some bad experience, like low efficiency, some changes may be reviewed over days hard to balance speed and quality, especially for newbies some guy felt distrust As to post-review, I just knew little about this, but the most thing I worried about is the risk of losing control, people never review. • Looking for a 24 Hour project for multiple languages [closed]

  Right two friends and I came up with this idea of having a 24h programming competition. Where we are going to meet at one place and program away for 24hours long. Though we need a 'project'. Something that needs to be made within 24h. Doesn't have to be a real thing, just a nice learning 'thing'. The rules that we setup for ourselves is that the project can be programmed in any language of our own choice. What I know is that one guy is a PHP enthousiastic, we've got a C#/.NET person. And I am quite easy in languages and speak quite a few (PHP/C#.net/C++STL/Python/JavaScript/Java). Anything really language specific is out of the question. Is there anyone who happens to have a great idea for this?
