  • Unable to install applications (Oneiric)

    When I use the software center to install something, I get the error: An unhandlable error occured There seems to be a programming error in aptdaemon, the software that allows you to install/remove software and to perform other package management related tasks on using the command line: $sudo apt-get install <something> E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. I am unable to install anything. How do we fix this?

  • Graphics corrupt after upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04

    I'm stuck at the moment with an ubuntu that boots into an unusable white screen after upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04. I've tried booting into safe X mode but it just throws me back to the safe menu every time. Restore previous graphics driver, use default graphics configuration and set up new graphics configuration all don't work either. I've tried various methods of resetting the graphics from the command line, but none are working due to unmet dependencies. These cannot be fixed by doing the normal "apt-get -f install" because its saying there is a dpkg error in var/lib/dpkg/status (blank line relating to skype-wrapper). I haven't been able to find any other way to fix the dependencies yet. Can someone please give me some advice on what to do, I really don't want to go the re install route.

  • USB keyboard does not load after 13.10 upgrade

    Problem: Running kernel 3.11.0-12-generic after a Ubuntu upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 my USB keyboard is not recognised, thus I am not able to unlock my encrypted disk. I suspect it might be related to a minimal/incorrect install of initrd. Question: How do I go about getting the newest kernel to recognise my generic USB keyboard, allowing me to unlock my encrypted disk? What I have tried: I have already re-installed the newest kernel: sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-generic linux-image and I have also updated the initrd: update-initramfs -c -k 3.11.0-12-generic Back story: I just completed upgrading my Ubuntu system from 13.04 to 13.10. When I subsequently rebooted by system I was no longer able to enter my encryption password (passphrase) as the keyboard drivers did not load. Temporary workaround: Earlier in the boot process (before the keyboard stops working) I was able to enter GRUB menu were I choose to boot from an older kernel (3.8.0-31-generic) which did load the USB keyboard drivers. This is currently the kernel I am running. Thanks

  • Ubuntu doesn't boot after upgrade

    I updated to 12.10 and the OS will not load. I used the boot repair cd, and the only thing that works is the monodeset option in the kernel and the graphics are terrible, mouse disappears and unity will not load. Ubuntu 12.04 ran great. On a clean install of 12.10 Ubuntu wont even load to install unless under using monodeset. I get left a terminal like screen with just a blinking bar. I'm using a HP Compaq NC6400 Laptop, Ubuntu 32-bit, 2gb ram.

  • MacPorts on Snow Leopard: Python install seems to succeed but doesn't install a non-system Python

    I've installed Python via MacPorts. According to this question, the files in /opt/local/bin should run the "correct" Python version. However, all those files are symlinks to: /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin/ Running them directly from that folder (using no symlinks) runs an Apple build of Python!     Is it possible to install all packages from an APT repository? I know it is possible to do it manually, but then you would need to know all the package names, and I don't. Any suggestions? Thanks. Update: Well, you guys are going to kill me for this, but the reason for my madness is that I want to install all the packages from BackTrack into my Ubuntu installation. I really don't like the idea of having it in a VM and having a separate partition for it is even more out of the question. I know that the folks at BackTrack doesn't like it when people leech their repositories, but that's what you get for releasing open source software. Stupid? maybe.. A valid reason? probably not.. Do I still want it? Yes. Another edit: I have now given up on this as it seems impossible to get it to work even by manually installing packages.

  • Can I upgrade my computer to run SC2 smoothly?

    My desktop is: ACPI x86 AMD Athlon x2 Dual Core 3600 1.9ghz 1 gig ram NVIDIA Geforce 7300 I'm running 32 bit windows vista. My budget is ~$250 When I play SC2, its incredibly slow and I have to play with the graphics on the LOWEST settings. What can/should I buy (specifically) to get this to run SC2 smoothly? Are max setting possible? I'm not sure what I can get that will be for sure compatible + will actually do the trick. Or is my computer simply too old?

    I'm seriously considering upgrading to Windows 7 on release, especially now that the UK price for doing so is actually reasonable for once, but am worried about losing the ~600GB of TV that I have recorded. AFAIK the recording format changed from the RTM Vista code when the TV Pack (Fiji?) was introduced to OEMs a while back and it is not possible to convert existing recordings to the new format. I'm assuming that 7 builds on the TV Pack code, so will upgrading lose me all my recorded TV?

  • Centos 6 - How to upgrade module located inside initramfs?

    We have recently upgraded our e1000e (intel ethernet) module on one of our centos 6.0 boxes. Even tho the module compile and installed fine, the old version is still being used. We have tracked this down to the fact that the e1000e.ko module is located inside the initamfs file for the booting kernel and thus, even tho the module located in /lib/modules/.... was being updated, the old one is still being loaded from inside the initramfs file. After some research, we have found that creating a new initamfs file in centos should be as simple as: /sbin/dracut <initramfs> <kernel-version> Can someone confirm that this is a safe way to basically recreate the initamfs file? This is a non-locally hosted (1000's of km away...) box, and getting support to resolve this if a reboot is unsuccessful will lead to quite a bit of down time. Thanks.

  • Is a memory upgrade a viable option to fix performance issues? [closed]

    I'm currently seeing my PC getting bogged down by Firefox 11.0 alone with only one hundred tabs open. Resulting in a memory use of over 530M , VM size of over 800M and an insane amount of page faults (easily reaching 100 million over the course of the day). The PF delta during normal operation easily reaches 7k with peaks to 15k sometimes reaching over 20k. This leads to a (real) deterioration to response time when switching, opening and closing tabs, opening menus, typing, ... My question is: Am I right in assuming that plugging in more RAM (either adding 2x1GB or replacing the existing RAM with 2x2GB or 4x1GB) will solve this problem? My specs: Windows XP Home Edition SP3 (32 bit) Intel Core Duo 2,4 GHz 2x512MB RAM 800MHz DDR2 (dual channel) 4MB unified cache 320GB HDD Intel G33 (X3100) onboard graphics (no graphics card but PCI express x16 slot is available)

    Hi my current specs are CPU: Intel Core i5 750 2.66 GHz, Socket 1156 Motherboard: Asus P7P55 LX Motherboard, Socket 1156, 4xDIMM DDR3, 2xPCIe-16, 3xPCI, 2xPCIe-1, 14xUSB2, Audio, 1xATA, 6xSATA, RAID, ATX HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS Hard Disk Drive, 1500GB, 7200rpm, 32MB Cache, SATA-2 RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw F3-12800CL8D-4GBRM, 2x2GB, DDR3-1600, PC3-12800, CL8, DIMM Video: MSI Radeon 5850 R5850-PM2D1G Video Card, 1024MB, DDR5, PCIe-16, DVI, CrossFire, HDMI PSU: Vantec ION2, 620W ATX PSU, SLI Ready, Black Firstly I know it badly needs an SSD, for which I'm thinking of the Samsung 250gb 840 EVO series. The ram could do with another 4GB, for which I am thinking of replacing the 2x2GB for 2x4GB of the same type. My video card is struggling with the latest releases, so vitally should I ditch the video card and go for something newer (ATI 7850, GTX 660?) or try and get another 5850 for crossfire support? Bearing in mind 5850's are sort of hard to come buy now as they are not stocked in shops usually, which means they have to be bought second hand.

  • SQL – Step by Step Guide to Download and Install NuoDB – Getting Started with NuoDB

    Let us take a look at the application you own at your business. If you pay attention to the underlying database for that application you will be amazed. Every successful business these days processes way more data than they used to process before. The number of transactions and the amount of data is growing at an exponential rate. Every single day there is way more data to process than before. Big data is no longer a concept; it is now turning into reality. If you look around there are so many different big data solutions and it can be a quite difficult task to figure out where to begin. Personally, I have been experimenting with a lot of different solutions which allow my database to scale immediately without much hassle while maintaining optimal database performance.  There are for sure some solutions out there, but for many I even have to learn their specific language and there is a lot of new exploration to do. Honestly, what I prefer is a product, which works with the language I know (SQL) and follows all the RDBMS concepts which I am familiar with (ACID etc.). NuoDB is one such solution.  It is an operational NewSQL database built on a patented emergent architecture with full support for SQL and ACID guarantees. In this blog post, I will explore how one can download and install NuoDB database. Step 1: Follow me and go to the NuoDB download page. Simply fill out the form, accept the online license agreement, and you will be taken directly to a page where you can select any platform you prefer to install NuoDB. In my example below, I select the Windows 64-bit platform as it is one of the most popular NuoDB platforms. (You can also run NuoDB on Amazon Web Services but I prefer to install it on my local machine for the purposes of this blog). Step 2: Once you have downloaded the NuoDB installer, double click on it to install it on the Windows platform. Here is the enlarged the icon of the installer. Step 3: Follow the wizard installation, as it is pretty straight forward and easy to do so. I have selected all the options to install as the overall installation is very simple and it does not take up much space. I have installed it on my C drive but you can select your preferred drive. It is quite possible that if you do not have 64 bit Java, it will throw following error. If you face following error, I suggest you to download 64-bit Java from here. Make sure that you download 64-bit Java from following link: http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp If already have Java 64-bit installed, you can continue with the installation as described in following image. Otherwise, install Java and start from with Step 1. As in my case, I already have 64-bit Java installed – and you won’t believe me when I say that the entire installation of NuoDB only took me around 90 seconds. Click on Finish to end to exit the installation. Step 4: Once the installation is successful, NuoDB will automatically open the following two tabs – Console and DevCenter — in your preferred browser. On the Console tab you can explore various components of the NuoDB solution, e.g. QuickStart, Admin, Explorer, Storefront and Samples. We will see various components and their usage in future blog posts. If you follow these steps in this post, which I have followed to install NuoDB, you will agree that the installation of NuoDB is extremely smooth and it was indeed a pleasure to install a database product with such ease. If you have installed other database products in the past, you will absolutely agree with me. So download NuoDB and install it today, and in tomorrow’s blog post I will take the installation to the next level.   • User Account Disabled After Upgrade to 12.04.1 LTS

    I upgraded from 10.xxx to 12.04.1 LTS using the upgrade feature within Ubuntu. System upgraded but after a reboot, the graphical interface comes up. When I try logging in using a user account that pre-existed on the system, the graphical interface screen disappears, screen goes blank and then reverts to the graphical interface prompting for a password. I have loads of data and installed programs under the particular user account. PLEASE HELP....
