• iPhone and iPad : Doing a "select * from something" query in a SQLite database

- by Abramodj
Hi folks, i'm trying to use the SQLite data base in my iPad app, and here's my function to make a query: - (void)executeQuery:(char*)query { NSString *file = [self getWritableDBPath]; NSFileManager *fileManager = [NSFileManager defaultManager]; BOOL success = [fileManager fileExistsAtPath:file]; // If its not a local copy set it to the bundle copy if(!success) { //file = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:DATABASE_TITLE ofType:@"db"]; [self createEditableCopyOfDatabaseIfNeeded]; } dataArray = NULL; dataArray = [NSMutableArray array]; sqlite3 *database = NULL; if (sqlite3_open([file UTF8String], &database) == SQLITE_OK) { sqlite3_exec(database, query, loadTimesCallback, dataArray, NULL); } sqlite3_close(database); [self logResults]; } if I call [self executeQuery:"select name from table1"]; everything is working fine. But if i call [self executeQuery:"select * from cars"]; the app crashes telling me that the NSMutableArray dataArray is not the right kind of variable where to set the query results. So, how can i do a "select * form table1" query, and store the results? Thanks! EDIT: Here's my loadTimesCallback method: static int loadTimesCallback(void *context, int count, char **values, char **columns) { NSMutableArray *times = (NSMutableArray *)context; for (int i=0; i < count; i++) { const char *nameCString = values[i]; [times addObject:[NSString stringWithUTF8String:nameCString]]; } return SQLITE_OK; }

• Structuring iPhone/iPad application views

- by Mark
I have an idea about an application that I want to build and Im new to iPhone/iPad development (but not new to development in other languages/frameworks such as .NET and Java). I want to layout some views on the screen so that they animate (slide in) from different directions into their places. The question is about the strucuture of the application, if I have say 4 rectanglular areas on the screen that contain business data, such as contacts (name, photo, etc...) and they all take up different widths of the screen (say the first contact takes up one row of the screen, but the next 2 take up half the width of the next row each, and so on). Should I create a custom view for the different sized contact views, (i.e. LargeCustomView and SmallCustomView, and any other special type that I make) or should it all be one type, say, CustomerDetailsView which could be stretched to fit at design time? Also, if there were, say, 3 different instances of the same custom view on the one screen, are there 3 instances of the view controller also? Im a little confused about powering the data behind a view, can someone shed some light on this for me? Do I just set the properties (say an instance variable ContactForView) on the view controller for each instance? Thanks for any help you can give Cheers, Mark

• Toolbar hiding on rotated UISplitView DetailView

- by Gerry
I've based my app on Apple's SplitView project type. I have a TableView as the Master, and am using different types of views as the Detail view. To select types of detail view, I'm using the fancy concept of buttons on my DetailView toolbar. When the DetailView is derived from UIViewController, everything is good. When the DetailView derives from UIViewController, but contains a UITableView then I have problems. In portrait view the toolbar is visible. In landscape mode the toolbar is hidden, even though the Tableview is moved down to allow space for it. The UIToolbar and UITableView are both defined in my NIB file which is loaded to create the detail view. Why is my toolbar invisible in landscape? BTW, is this the best way to choose Detail view types with UISplitView? Bonus question, what if selecting a row in my DetailView tableview should bring up another View, I can't push it like I would with a NaviagtionController, so how do I go back to the detail tableview? Thanks, Gerry

• CodeStock 2012 Review: Eric Landes( @ericlandes ) - Automated Tests in to automated Builds! How to put the right type of automated tests in to the right automated builds.

Automated Tests in to automated Builds! How to put the right type of automated tests in to the right automated builds.Speaker: Eric LandesTwitter: @ericlandesBlog: http://ericlandes.com/ This was one of the first sessions I attended during CodeStock 2012. Eric’s talk focused mostly on unit testing, and that the lack of proper unit testing can be compared to stealing from an employer. His point was that if you’re not doing proper unit testing then all of the time wasted on fixing issues that could have been detected with unit tests is like stealing money from employer. He makes the assumption that that time spent on fixing these issues could have been better spent developing new features that drive the business. To a point I can agree with Eric’s argument regarding unit testing and stealing from a company’s perspective. I can see how he relates resources being shifted from new development to bug fixes as stealing based on the fact that the resources used to fix bugs are directly taken from other projects. He also states that Boring/Redundant and Build/Test tasks should be automated because it reduces the changes of errors and frees up developer to do what they do best, DEVELOP! When he refers to testing, he breaks testing down in to four distinct types. Unit Test Acceptance Test (This also includes Integration Tests) Performance Test UI Test With this he also recommends that developers should not go buck wild striving for 100% code coverage because some test my not provide a great return on investment. In his experience he recommends that 70% test coverage was a very acceptable rate.

• Cannot get UISearchBar Scope Bar to appear in Toolbar on iPad

- by Jann
This is really causing me fits. I put a toolbar on the IUView on the iPad. I added the following: Search Bar (not Search Bar and Search Display) to the toolbar. I set the options to be as follows: Show Cancel Button, Show Scope Bar, Scope Button Titles are: "Title1" and "Title2" (with Title2's radio button selected). Opaque, Clear Context and Auto Resize are checked. I hooked up the delegate of Search Bar to the "File's Owner" and linked it to IBOutlet theSearchBar. In my viewWillAppear I have the following: [theSearchBar setScopeButtonTitles:[NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"Near Me",@"Everywhere",nil]]; //Just in case: [theSearchBar setShowsScopeBar:YES]; //doesn't seem to do anything: //[theSearchBar sizeToFit]; searchDisplayController = [[UISearchDisplayController alloc] initWithSearchBar:theSearchBar contentsController:self]; [self setSearchDisplayController:searchDisplayController]; [searchDisplayController setDelegate:self]; [searchDisplayController setSearchResultsDataSource:self]; //again--does not seem to do anything..but people have suggested it: [theSearchBar sizeToFit]; Okay, so far, I thought, so good. So, I made the File's Owner .m file to be a delegate for: UISearchBarDelegate, UISearchDisplayDelegate. My issue: I have yet to implement the delegates necessary to do the search but still... shouldn't I be seeing the scopeBar next to the search field when I click into the search field? Just so you know I DO see the log of the characters I type, so the delegate is working. I have the following dummy functions in the .m file (just in case) // called when keyboard search button pressed - (void)searchBarSearchButtonClicked:(UISearchBar *)searchBar { NSLog(@"Search Button Clicked\n"); [theSearchBar resignFirstResponder]; } // called when cancel button pressed - (void)searchBarCancelButtonClicked:(UISearchBar *)searchBar { NSLog(@"Cancel Button Clicked\n"); [theSearchBar resignFirstResponder]; } - (void)searchBar:(UISearchBar *)searchBar textDidChange:(NSString *)searchText { NSLog(@"Search Text So Far: '%@'\n",searchText); } - (BOOL)searchBarShouldBeginEditing:(UISearchBar *)searchBar { return YES; } - (BOOL)searchBarShouldEndEditing:(UISearchBar *)searchBar { return YES; } Why doesn't the Scope Bar appear? A results UIPopoverController appears with the title "Results" and "No results found" (of course) when i type the first character in my search...but no scope bar. (not that i expect anything other than "No Results Found". I am wondering where the scope bar is supposed to appear...in the titleView of the UIPopover? In the toolbar to the right of the search area? Where?

• How do I add a custom view to iPhone app's UI?

- by Dr Dork
I'm diving into iPad development and I'm still learning how everything works together. I understand how to add standard view (i.e. buttons, tableviews, datepicker, etc.) to my UI using both Xcode and Interface Builder, but now I'm trying to add a custom calendar control (TapkuLibrary) to the left window in my UISplitView application. My question is, if I have a custom view (in this case, the TKCalendarMonthView), how do I programmatically add it to one of the views in my UI (in this case, the RootViewController)? Below are some relevant code snippets from my project... RootViewController interface @interface RootViewController : UITableViewController <NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate> { DetailViewController *detailViewController; NSFetchedResultsController *fetchedResultsController; NSManagedObjectContext *managedObjectContext; } @property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet DetailViewController *detailViewController; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSFetchedResultsController *fetchedResultsController; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSManagedObjectContext *managedObjectContext; - (void)insertNewObject:(id)sender; TKCalendarMonthView interface @class TKMonthGridView,TKCalendarDayView; @protocol TKCalendarMonthViewDelegate, TKCalendarMonthViewDataSource; @interface TKCalendarMonthView : UIView { id <TKCalendarMonthViewDelegate> delegate; id <TKCalendarMonthViewDataSource> dataSource; NSDate *currentMonth; NSDate *selectedMonth; NSMutableArray *deck; UIButton *left; NSString *monthYear; UIButton *right; UIImageView *shadow; UIScrollView *scrollView; } @property (readonly,nonatomic) NSString *monthYear; @property (readonly,nonatomic) NSDate *monthDate; @property (assign,nonatomic) id <TKCalendarMonthViewDataSource> dataSource; @property (assign,nonatomic) id <TKCalendarMonthViewDelegate> delegate; - (id) init; - (void) reload; - (void) selectDate:(NSDate *)date; Thanks in advance for all your help! I still have a ton to learn, so I apologize if the question is absurd in any way. I'm going to continue researching this question right now!

• Objective-C: iPad Crash When Screen Shot Button Clicked

- by SeongHo
OK, i am making a Coloring app and it has a "Save" button that will take the screen shot of the view where the drawing is. I have 6 images to color. In the intro page there 6 buttons, each will link you to a particular coloring page. All are working well including the "Save" button except for one. All coloring views has the same contents and functions but in one image, it crashes the iPad whenever i clicked the "Save" button. Here's some of my codes: On Button Click: [self saveScreenshotToPhotosAlbum]; camFlash = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 1024, 768)]; [camFlash setBackgroundColor:[UIColor whiteColor]]; [camFlash setAlpha:0.0]; [cbHolder addSubview:camFlash]; [cbHolder bringSubviewToFront:camFlash]; [UIView beginAnimations:@"Flash-On" context:NULL]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:0.2]; [UIView setAnimationRepeatAutoreverses:NO]; [camFlash setAlpha:1.0]; [UIView commitAnimations]; NSString *soundPath = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource:@"flash" ofType:@"wav"]; AVAudioPlayer *flashSFX = [[AVAudioPlayer alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:soundPath] error:NULL]; flashSFX.volume = 0.5; flashSFX.numberOfLoops = 0; self->camFlashSFX = flashSFX; if ([flashSFX currentTime] != 0) [flashSFX setCurrentTime:0]; [flashSFX play]; [self performSelector:@selector(removeFlash) withObject:nil afterDelay:0.2]; Remove Flash: - (void) removeFlash { [camFlash removeFromSuperview]; } For the screenshot: - (UIImage*)captureView { UIGraphicsBeginImageContext(CGSizeMake(1024, 768)); CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); [cbHolder.layer renderInContext:context]; UIImage *img = UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext(); UIGraphicsEndImageContext(); return img; } - (void)saveScreenshotToPhotosAlbum { UIImageWriteToSavedPhotosAlbum([self captureView], nil, nil, nil); } This one is for the button that will show the coloring page: uc4 = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"tpUncolored1.png"]]; [uc4 setUserInteractionEnabled:YES]; [uc4 setFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 1024, 768)]; [cbHolder addSubview:uc4]; clrd4 = [[UIImageView alloc] initWithImage:[UIImage imageNamed:@"tpColored1.png"]]; [clrd4 setUserInteractionEnabled:YES]; [clrd4 setFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 1024, 768)]; [cbHolder addSubview:clrd4]; [UIView beginAnimations:@"fabe-out" context:NULL]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.5]; [clrd4 setAlpha:0.0]; [UIView commitAnimations]; [self performSelector:@selector(cb4) withObject:nil afterDelay:1.5];

• How to Sync Any Browser’s Bookmarks With Your iPad or iPhone

- by Chris Hoffman
Apple makes it easy to synchronize bookmarks between the Safari browser on a Mac and the Safari browser on iOS, but you don’t have to use Safari — or a Mac — to sync your bookmarks back and forth. You can do this with any browser. Whether you’re using Chrome, Firefox, or even Internet Explorer, there’s a way to sync your browser bookmarks so you can access your same bookmarks on your iPad. Safari on a Mac Apple’s iCloud service is the officially supported way to sync data with your iPad or iPhone. It’s included on Macs, but Apple also offers similar iCloud bookmark syncing features for Windows. On a Mac, this should be enabled by default. To check whether it’s enabled, you can launch the System Preferences panel on your Mac, open the iCloud preferences panel, and ensure the Safari option is checked. If you’re using Safari on Windows — well, you shouldn’t be. Apple is no longer updating Safari for Windows. iCloud allows you to synchronize bookmarks between other browsers on your Windows system and Safari on your iOS device, so Safari isn’t necessary. Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome via iCloud To get started, download Apple’s iCloud Control Panel application for Windows and install it. Launch the iCloud Control Panel and log in with the same iCloud account (Apple ID) you use on your iPad or iPhone. You’ll be able to enable Bookmark syncing with Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome. Click the Options button to select the browser you want to synchronize bookmarks with. (Note that bookmarks are called “favorites” in Internet Explorer.) You’ll be able to access your synced bookmarks in the Safari browser on your iPad or iPhone, and they’ll sync back and forth automatically over the Internet. Google Chrome Sync Google Chrome also has its own built-in sync feature and Google provides an official Chrome app for iPad and iPhone. If you’re a Chrome user, you can set up Chrome Sync on your desktop version of Chrome — you should already have this enabled if you have logged into your Chrome browser. You can check if this Chrome Sync is enabled by opening Chrome’s settings screen and seeing whether you’re signed in. Click the Advanced sync settings button and ensure bookmark syncing is enabled. Once you have Chrome Sync set up, you can install the Chrome app from the App Store and sign in with the same Google account. Your bookmarks, as well as other data like your open browser tabs, will automatically sync. This can be a better solution because the Chrome browser is available for so many platforms and you gain the ability to synchronize other browser data, such as your open browser tabs, between your devices. Unfortunately, the Chrome browser is slower than Apple’s own Safari browser on iPad and iPhone because of the way Apple limits third-party browsers, so using it involves a trade-off. Manual Bookmark Sync in iTunes iTunes also allows you to sync bookmarks between your computer and your iPad or iPhone. It does this the old-fashioned way, by initiating a manual sync when your device is plugged in via USB. To access this option, connect your device to your computer, select the device in iTunes, and click the Info tab. This is the more outdated way of synchronizing your bookmarks. This feature may be useful if you want to create a one-time copy of your bookmarks from your PC, but it’s nowhere near ideal for regular syncing. You don’t have to use this feature, just as you really don’t have to use iTunes anymore. In fact, this option is unavailable if you’ve set up iCloud syncing in iTunes. After you set up bookmark syncing via iCloud or Chrome Sync, bookmarks will sync immediately after you save, remove, or edit them.

• planning the same app for both OSX and iOS

- by P5music
I would like to ask which is the best strategy for creating an application that will be developed both on Mac and iPad, so to make minumum effort to port it from one platform to the other, starting from iPad, for example, but rather trying to make both at the same time. The application, in fact, would be an iPad-style one on the Mac too. How should I have to plan the project? Which are the main tricks to easily get the goal?

• Make game for iPhone only

- by Alex
From the beginning of development on my game I was hoping to release it as a universal app, but the gameplay simply doesn't work as well on the iPad. Also, it was designed to work on the iPhone screen, and the (even slight) difference in width to height ratio gives iPhone users an advantage over iPad users by seeing more of the path ahead. Not to mention it doesn't look quite right on the larger screen. Hypothetically, if my game becomes a top seller, would it be a bad idea to have it only an iPhone app? Would it make it far less likely for my app to become viral? My app would still work on the iPad like any other iPhone app, and I plan on eventually releasing an update that supports both iPad and iPhone.

• The Apple iPad – I’m gonna get it!

- by Sahil Malik
Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Well, heck, here comes another non-techie blogpost. You know I’m a geek, so I love gadgets! I found it RATHER interesting to see all the negative news on the blogosphere about the iPad. The main bitch points are - No Multi tasking No Flash Just a bigger iPhone. So here’s the deal! My view is, the above 3 are EXACTLY what I had personally hoped for in the Apple iPad. Before the release, I had gone on the record saying - “If the Apple Tablet is able to run full fledged iTunes (so I can get rid of iTunes on my desktop, I don’t like iTunes on Windows), can browse the net, can read PDFs, and will be under $1000, I’ll buy it”. Well, so, the released iPad wasn’t exactly like my dream tablet. The biggest downer IMO was it’s inability to run full iTunes. But, really, in retrospect, I like the newly released iPad. And here is why. No Multi tasking and No Flash, means much better battery life. Frankly, I rarely multi task on my laptop/desktop .. yeah I know my OS does .. but ME – I don’t multi task, and I don’t think you do either!! As I type this blogpost, I have a few windows running behind the scenes, but they are simply waiting for me to get back to them. The only thing truly running and I am making use of, other than this blogost, is media player playing some music – which the iPad can do. Also, I am logged into IM/Email – which again, iPad can do via notifications. It does the limited multitasking I need, without chewing down on batteries. Smart thinking, precisely the reason I love the iPhone. I don’t want a bulky battery consuming machine. Lack of flash? Okay sure, I can’t see Hulu on my iPad. That’s some loss. I can see youtube. Also, per Adobe I can’t see some porn sites, which I don’t want to see on my iPad. But, Flash is heavy. Especially flash video. My dream is to see silverlight run on the iPhone and iPad. No flash = not such a big loss. Speaking of battery life – 10 hours is plenty. I haven’t been away from electricity for that long usually, so I’m okay with charging it up when it runs low. It’s really not such a big deal honestly. Finally, eBook functionality – wow! I went on the record saying, eBook readers are not for me, but seriously, the iPad is perfect for my eBook needs at least. And as far it being just a bigger iPhone? I’ve always wanted a bigger iPhone, precisely for the eBook reading experience. I love my iPhone, I love the apps on it. The only thing that sucks about the iPhone is battery life, but other than that, it is the best gadget I have ever bought! And something that runs on mobile chips, is that thin, and those newly written apps .. mail, calendar .. I am very very excited to get my iPad, which will be the 64gig 3G version. The biggest plus in an iPad ……… no contract on data. I am *hoping*, this means that I can buy a SIM card in Europe, and use the iPad here. That would be killer awesome! But hey, if I had to pick downers in the iPad, they would be - - I wish they had a 128G Version. Now that we have a good video viewing machine, I know I’d chew up space quickly.- Sync over WIFI, seriously Apple. Both for iPhone and iPad.- 3 month wait!!- Existing iPhone users should get a discount on the iPad data plan. • Value of links on negative review pages

- by Sam Healey
A general assumption with SEO is more links = higher rankings. What I would like to know is does Google know what those links are referring to. I.e. if somebody gives a product a good review on their personal blog and links the review to another companies website (who are selling the product), would Google take consideration for the review/description link. Essentially would Google know that this link refers to a product. So if somebody is looking to buy a product, Google would know to include this page because the previous link said it sells products rather than just having information on products. Then to take this further, does Google know if a link is positive or negative. For example, If somebody creates a post saying, do not visit example.com, example.com is bad because of blah blah blah. Would Google know that the link is getting bad feedback and therefore would it have a negative affect on rankings, or would Google go oh its just another link and give it better rankings?
