• ubuntu 12.10 slow application load upon restart

  new ubuntu user. after boot (boot is quite fast), opening applications such as firefox, libra, system settings, takes close to 10 seconds to open. after the application is loaded in RAM, the application opens fine. the system feels snappy, quick. when i have two FIREFOX open, unity is snappy in showing me the two windows side by side. but upon bootup, loading the application takes 10 seconds. there is not much hdd activity. fresh install. its the same for system settings and browsing system settings. when system settings is opened for the first time (10 second), and i click for example Color, it will take quite long to open the color settings. hardware: i3 4gb ram radeon 5770 250gb sata gigabyte h55m motherboard i am using ubuntu straight out of the box, no propriety drivers. 64 bit. i have reinstalled OS, and still the same.

• How do I move an Amazon micro instance to a small instance?

  I want to move my instance to a micro instance to a small instance but when I try to launch a new AMI based on my Micro instance AMI it only gives me the option for 64 bit instances. My initial ami is based off an ubuntu 10.04 image. Is it not possible to move between 64 bit and 32 bit instance? Would it be possible to use a load balancer to have a 32bit instance and a 64bit instance work together? I have a website/web app that I will be uploading huge volumes of data to. I will be starting with 65gigs of images and then moving up to 100+ gigs of images. I am not sure which instance type would be best for this. I was going to use a load balancer and auto scaling to increase the number of instance when the load is high. Also when using a load balancer, does one of the AMI instance become the primary image and the rest act as clones of it?

• Grub Doesn't Load after Update

  Hi Everyone, After I updated ubuntu (I believe it was most likely a kernel update) and restarted I selected ubuntu from the windows boot loader (I am using wubi). At this point I would usually land on the grub loader; however, I see something about NTFS file not found and a couple other screens flash then the computer restarts. I have tried pressing ESC right after to try and get some options, but I think grub is just not found or something... Not sure what is going on.. Any help would be much appreciated :). Thanks!

  I will soon be receiving a new machine (yes, I need the improved performance!) how can I transfer over all of my current Ubuntu settings and files to the new machine. This is very important because I have many packages installed from apt-get, python packages, emacs packages and so forth. I really want to avoid installing all of the same packages over again. • How to maximize parallel download from S3

  I got a lot of images to load from Amazon S3 on a single page, and sometimes it takes quite some time to load all the images. I heard that splitting the images to load from different sub-domains would help parallel downloads, however what is the actual implementation on that? While it is easy to split for sub-domains like static,image, etc; Should I make like 10 sub-domains (image1, image2...) to load say 100 images? Or is there some clever ways to do? (By the way I am considering using memcache to cache the S3images; I am not sure if it is possible. I would be grateful for any further comments. Thanks a lot!

  I want to load a word document using UIWebView. I used the code provided in http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/qa/qa2008/qa1630.html to load the document. But not all the documents load successfully. Sometimes I get an error Error Domain=WebKitErrorDomain Code=102 UserInfo=0x145bc10 "Frame load interrupted" The error seems to be very sporadic and I get this error only for some documents. However the same document loads correctly in mail.app. What am I missing?

  Hi, I have found a way to load exchange 2010 powershell into powershell running on a windows xp workstation, however there are a few commands that need to run. I was wondering how I could load them into a profile somehow. These are the commands that I need to run before I can do any of the exchange things such as Get-Mailbox. COMMAND 1 $session = New-PSSession -Configurationname Microsoft.Exchange –ConnectionUri http://servername/powershell -Credential $user (it prompts you for a username and p/word then the next command) COMMAND 2 Import-PSSession $session Then I am able to run exchange 2010 commands such as Get-Mailbox.   Hi all: I have an nginx server (CentOS 5.3, linux) that I'm using as a reverse-proxy load-balancer in front of 8 ruby on rails application servers. As our load on these servers increases, I'm beginning to wonder at what point will the nginx server become a bottleneck? The CPUs are hardly used, but that's to be expected. The memory seems to be fine. No IO to speak of. So is my only limitation bandwidth on the NICs? Currently, according to some cacti graphs, the server is hitting around 700Kbps ( 5 min average ) on each NIC during high load. I would think this is still pretty low. Or, will the limit be in sockets or some other resource in the operating system? Thanks for any thoughts and insights. Aaron

  I have a production web server that makes sites to be very slow when load for first time. After the first time all connections are normal and fast. • linux ssh -X graphical applications will not start when system load is high

  So I am using ssh -X to access a server. I am at a Xubuntu desktop accessing a Ubuntu server that is in the next room. Usually everything works fine, but when the system load gets high, any graphical applications I have freeze and fail to be restarted. This happens even if the process that is causing the high load has been niced to a low priority with "nice -n 19". And even though the system load is high, the command line works fine with no delay, and other applications I have running on the server (e.g. virtual machines) run fine. But any graphical application running through X dies. When the graphical applications fail they usually give out an error message that suggests a time-out. It seems that something connected to X has a low priority and times out. But what is it, and how does one fix it?

  I am currently working on load testing a web application on a virtual machine cluster. I am looking for a way to flush the connection pool / NLB cache so that it is like each machine connecting to the NLB is connecting for the first time and doesn't get directed back to the node that it was on last time. This a Windows 2003 Server cluster, behind a Microsoft software based Network Load Balancer. Additional Information: To do the load testing I'm using virtual machines, one for each node on the cluster. Somehow I got two virtual machines connecting to the same node and I'm looking for an easier way to reset those connections without going in to the NLB Manager and stopping and starting each node on the NLB. Update: We went ahead and changed the affinity on all of the nodes of the cluster to none. Now it's a non-issue.

• Load balance between two virtual directories on a single machine running IIS6

  I'm trying to simulate a production environment using a single VM. The production environment will have 3 servers behind a load balancer with sticky sessions. Production will be using IIS6. For development, I have no need to distribute load, but I want to make sure the team does not write code that relies on a single-server module. I have been hoping to set up two virtual directories and find some isapi filter to perform some rudimentary software load balancing, but I've been unable to locate anything suitable. isapi_rewrite comes close but there's no ability for a random rewrite. I don't even need sticky sessions since the application does not (in theory) rely on them. Is there something easy/free to do this, or am I stuck with multiple VMs and a NLB setup (which seems like total overkill)?

• Page won't load on IE9 unless developer tools are started first

  One of my pages (with very extensive javascript) won't load on IE9. It loads ok in Mozilla, Chrome, Safari and Opera. If IE9 Developer tools are running it loads fine. If I load IE9, load the developer tools (F12) then kill the developer tools it still loads fine. If developer tools are running then sometimes (but not always) the first message in the console is: HTML1113: Document mode restart from Quirks to IE9 Standards Doctype is: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> If I change doctype to and remove the xmlns nothing changes. I'm stumped. Any suggestions appreciated.

• Redundant Router and Load Balancing vs. DDoS attack

  With a small server farm at a hoster with great support and conditions, I worry about the increasing number of DDoS attacks against this hoster (not my web project, but other clients on the same location). I have booked a redundant router and load balancer as managed service with this hoster to share the load with all the dedicated servers. However, I was lost again today because another one's project was attacked with DDoS for hours :-( Each hour means hundreds of dollars loss whenever my adserver and tracking is not reachable. Even time-out advertising have to be paid by me but can not be resold to my clients without the servers being available. All the time, the servers, the load and traffic is OK and health, but no chance to keep this stable/online if the hoster is vulnerable. Anyone has ideas or suggestions how to protect - even against DDoS?

• Amazon EC2 as load balanced/failover solution

  Hi All, I'm thinking of an idea but not sure the pros/cons of it. At the moment, we are hosting our website on a dedicated server. As a failover/load balanced solution, I'm thinking to use Amazon EC2+EBS. The files can be rsync and mysql can be setup as master-master replication When the load is high, I can up the machine, given sometime to "sync" and load balanced the traffic there. is it do-able? any link I can read more on this?

  I'm relatively new to solr. I have a production site running on a VPS, but now I'm having serious load issues. I don't know where to start in order to get the load down...
