  • Documenting software-updates semi-automatically in MacOS X by parsing log files?

    I'd like to document changes I made to my computer (running MacOS 10.6.8) to be able to identify the sources of eventual problems. Mostly I install updates when a software notifies me about a newer version and offers me a dialog to download and install the update. Currently I'm documenting those updates "by hand" by noting in a text file, when I have e. g. installed a Flash-Player update or updated another 3rd party software ... I wonder if I could achieve that easier and semi-automatically by parsing system logfiles for certain texts like "install" and that way directly get the relevant information: what has been installed (Software and version) when has been installed where has it been installed/what has changed Is there a way to extract such information by a script from the existing logfiles?

I'm interested in events related to compliance status, errors, etc in particular such as these: 11854 - Policy is now compliant 11856 - Previously compliant is now non compliant..   • Why does my router log crazy amounts of blocked traffic on port 1701?

    I have a 2701HGV-B 2Wire modem and router (AT&T). The log is basically full with entries similar to the following with a time between a fifth and a third of a second between entries: src=86.156.7.170 dst=xxx.xxx.xxx.38 ipprot=17 sport=6882 dport=1701 Unknown inbound session stopped src=58.176.22.252 dst=xxx.xxx.xxx.38 ipprot=17 sport=21573 dport=1701 Unknown inbound session stopped src=91.221.6.250 dst=xxx.xxx.xxx.38 ipprot=17 sport=25902 dport=1701 Unknown inbound session stopped ... where the source IP will be different for every entry. The entries accumulate constantly, every single second that the router is on several of them appear in the log. The destination is the WAN address for my router. I understand that this is somehow related to VNCs, but I don't know enough to figure out why my router is getting bombarded with requests for a VNC session. Is there anything fishy going on or is this normal? If it is normal, how do I keep these entries from spamming my log files? Since there's about two or three of them every second, everything else gets drowned out.

  • Galaxy Tab 3 producing continuous LightSensor error in LogCat

    I am using a Galaxy Tab 3 as a test device for writing an android app. As such I'm interested in the output of the LogCat which is being filled with these error level messages. The device itself appears to work correctly, apps which rely on the light sensor correctly respond to it and the number in the error itself goes down if the light sensor is obscured. If I wasn't using it to develop apps I wouldn't even be aware of the issue but I believe it is an issue with the device itself not my app: simply plugging the tab 3 into the computer and using Eclipse - ADT to look at the LogCat without any app running leads to these errors being shown. I know I could filter the LogCat to ignore these errors but inconvenience aside; they concern me. A sample of the log cat is below (it generates errors continuously). This is on verbose so it includes some debug level (D/) messages as well as the error level messages (E/).   • How to automatically copy a file uploaded by a user by FTP in Linux (CentOS)?

    Outside contractor says they need read/write/execute permissions on part of the filesystem so they can run a script. I'm ok with that, but I want to know what they're running, in case it turns out there is some nefarious code. I assume they are going to upload the file, run it, and then delete it to prevent me from finding out what they've done. How can I find out exactly what they've done? My question specifically asks for a way of automatically copying the file, which would be one way. But if you have another solution, that's fine. For example, if the file could be automatically copied to /home/root/uploaded_files/ that would be awesome.

  • tomcat processParameters complains about "invalid chunk ignored"

    I am hosting a software system running under tomcat for quite a number of customers. Some of these send invalid URLs as request. These URLs may contain "&=" or "&&", which is not within the http specs. Now my tomcat complains about the following: "08.09.2010 12:36:04 org.apache.tomcat.util.http.Parameters processParameters WARNING: Parameters: Invalid chunk '' ignored." It is no problem, as is doesn't affect the operation in any way. Only problem ist that the tomcat/logs/catalina.out is growing with every single request. In the net you can find suggestions like: - Fix your URLs (which I can't, as it is the customers who send them) - Raise tomcats log level to ERROR (which I don't want to do, as it would suppress INFO like "INFO: Reloading context [/ContextName]" and other stuff you want to know. - Redirect the log to the application log (which won't solve the problem, as the message will flood just another log) Does anyone know how to solve the problem at its ROOT, which means: Tell tomcat not to complain about invalid request parameters any longer

  • How can I log the response header and body in apache?

    I need to determine whether the server (Apache 2) is returning the full contents of a page along with its correct header or not. I have a PHP-script that is executed successfully, but the browser is getting only half of the html content, it's simply cut off. The client infrastructure is pretty complicated, using Novell BorderManager Proxys and stuff. To ensure the server is doing its job fine I want to log both header and body of the reponse. How can I achieve this? I looked into the mod_log_config module of apache (which is already installed and ready to be used), but honestly I didn't quite manage to configure it to output header and body somewhere. edit: I managed to log the header with LogFormat "%h %l %u %t \"%r\" %s %b \"%{HEADER_NAME}o\"" common2 CustomLog /var/log/apache2/response.log common2 But unfortunately the mod_log_config formats don't support the whole content body. Can anyone help?

    I'm setting up a log collection server for my Windows network (about 30 servers ranging from 2003 to 2008 R2, and about 300 vista/7 clients), and I was wondering which logs are good to collect and which ones are a waste of time. I'm going to collect the obvious ones (system, security, event, firewall, and role specific logs) but are there any others I should be worried about? I'm using Splunk if that helps answer the question.

  • Windows log file monitor that supports custom events (eg. sending an email when it detects the string "ERROR")

    I know this question has been asked several times before but I can't seem to find a solution for my requirements. I currently use BareTail, which works wonderfully except that it doesn't support custom events besides line highlighting. I'm also trying TailForWin32. It has a SMTP plugin but it seems to be in beta status, and the highlighting seems limited. It also doesn't handle rolling log files very well (a blocking dialog box pops up, whereas BareTail just rolls over naturally). All I really need is something like BareTail that supports custom events. First prize would be a tool with a plugin-based architecture so I can use my own messaging plugins, but anything that supports SMTP mail would be fine as well.

    I am looking for a smtp proxy to install on our gateway which should monitor outgoing smtp traffic to identify the source of recently occuring spam attacks from our network. It would be enough if this could log all outgoing mails, no actual filtering must be done as I'm going to do this manually. Also, is it possible to monitor smtps ports 465 and 587 or is it necessary to completely block these ports to stop spam?

    I looking for the best solution to log all connecting client's ip to either a text file or a database who logs into my VPN server. Under the IP I mean the public WAN IP on the internet where they are connecting from. A hack could definitely be to make the openvpn server log to a separate logfile and run logtail periodically to extract the necessary information. So the database I want to build would look like: Client_Name | Client_IP | Connection_date roadwarr1 | 72.84.99.11 | 03/04/14 - 22:44:00 Sat Please don't recommend me to use the commercial Openvpn Access Server. That's not a real solution here. If the disconnection date could be determined that would be even better so I could see how long a client was connected and from where! Thank you

  • Is there a proper way to clear logs?

    I was wondering if there was a proper way to clear logs in general? I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm trying to set up Postfix. The log in question is /var/log/mail.log. I was wondering if there was a correct way to clear it, rather than me going in it and deleting all the lines and saving it. I find that sometimes errors don't get written to it immediately after I clear the log and save it. Side note: I'm having trouble setting up Postfix and am trying to make it easier for me to read the logs hoping it can help me out, instead of having to scroll all the way down.

    We have several developers who maintain the system and I want them to easily read the log files in /var/log/httpd without needing root access.     I currently have nginx proxying for Thin, but set up to serve static files for the app that Thin is serving instead of proxying the request. What I'd like to know is how I can check that the rules are set up correctly. Since Thin doesn't log requests, I would need to set up nginx logs in such a way that it shows which requests were served as files and which were passed to Thin. Is this even possible? If so, how?

I will explain all my steps: Open and Edit my.cnf and add the following lines: long_query_time = 5 slow_query_log_file = /myfolder/slowq.log log_slow_queries = 1 =(I have MySQL 5.0.7) Give mysql user permitions to write on the file: chown -R mysql:mysql /var/lib/mysql Create the file: touch /myfolder/slowq.log Chmod for this file to 777. service mysqld restart From MySQL Admin Panel I can see that the "log_slow_queries" var is OFF!     I am writing to the event log from my Windows Forms application running on Windows 7 and am getting this message in the event log: The description for Event ID X from source Application cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: Exception Details the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table My logging code is: public void Log(Exception exc) { EventLog.WriteEntry( "Application", exc.ToString(), EventLogEntryType.Error, 100); } My logging on Windows Forms is usually to a DB, but in this case decided to use the event log. I usually use the event log in ASP.NET applications, but those are on XP Pro locally and Windows Server 2003 on the web boxes. Is this a Windows 7 thing or a Windows Forms thing, and what should I do to fix this? Thanks.

    Hi All, Hope you can help. Is there a way to detect when a stored proc is being run on SQL Server without altering the SP itself? Here's the requirement. We need to track users running reports from our enterprise data warehouse as the core product we use doesn't allow for this. Both core product reports and a slew of in-house ones we've added all return their data from individual stored procs. We don't have a practical way of altering the parts of the product webpages where reports are called from. We also can't change the stored procs for the core product reports. (It would be trivial to add a logging line to the start/end of each of our inhouse ones). What I'm trying to find therefore, is whether there's a way in SQL Server (2005 / 2008) to execute a logging stored proc whenever any other stored procedure runs, without altering those stored procedures themselves. We have general control over the SQL Server instance itself as it's local, we just don't want to change the product stored procs themselves. Any one have any ideas? Is there a kind of "stored proc executing trigger"? Is there an event model for SQL Server that we can hook custom .Net code into? (Just to discount it from the start, we want to try and make a change to SQL Server rather than get into capturing the report being run from the products webpages etc) Thoughts appreciated Thanks

  • Where did ULSTraceLog go to in the SharePoint 2010 Logging Database?

    The Logging Database is one of the many new concepts that will make the life of many SharePoint administrators quite a bit more enjoyable. In SharePoint 2007 the Unified Logging System (ULS) logged all of its data to text files, typically found on your SharePoint server in 12\LOGS. We still have that in SharePoint 2010, but besides those text files, ULS can also write the data to a database! The advantages are obvious: easy to query, one central location for all servers in the farm, easy to build reports etc. You can find this ULS data in the SharePoint 2010 logging database (typically called WSS_Logging), in the view ULSTraceLog. Quite recently on one of my demo machines (standalone installation on Windows 7) I noticed the ULSTraceLog view was not available in the logging database. It turned out that there is a Timer Job that’s responsible for writing the data to the database, when the Timer Job hasn’t executed, the view is not there (the first time it executes, the view is created). Even more, the timer job was disabled, so the view would never be created, nor any data would be written to the database. If you encounter this situation as well, it’s quite easy to solve: Open the SharePoint Central Administration site Navigate to the Monitoring section Select Review Job Definitions Click on the job with the name Diagnostic Data Provider: Trace Log Click on the Enable button to enable it Optionally click on Run Now afterwards, to start it immediately There you go, the ULSTraceLog will be created and the ULS messages will appear in the database!
