With Windows there is is an option from the taskbar to tile windows horizontally or vertically. Is there someway to replicate this feature in Mac OS X?
Hi,
I notice the message:
Firewall[313] portmap is listening from 0.0.0.0:111 proto=6
repeated on my logs ever 30 seconds. How can I disable portmap (not using NFS or anything like that so I assume I have no need for it).
I already tried Lingon.app and disabled com.apple.portmap from there, but that didn't help at all as portmap is still running after i rebooted.
What would be the proper way to disable portmap and stop the service without having to reboot onMac OS X 10.6.

I have the following line of code that I use to update my personal date variable in my projects to today's current date. This line works in Ubuntu's terminal, but the Mac terminal seems to be far behind. Unfortunately, I copied this snippet from some site, so I'm not sure how it exactly works. Suggestions?
grep -ilr --exclude=revar.sh --exclude=README.md "[DATE]" * |
grep -v .git | xargs -i@ sed -i "s/\[DATE\]/${today}/g" @

When I use my Mac, I like have a standard windows organization to do my Work:
I put 4 consoles opened side by side on console 1
I put Safari in other
Mail and iCal in another
TextMate on other
etc
And depending on the work I do, I'd like to have different window configuration.
And when I have a external monitor connected, I need another configuration.
Is there any tool to make this? What is the best way to do it?
What I am trying to do is create two-step verification to logon to my mac, one being that you would need to input a SD card (formated with special format or something) and then also have a password. Is there any software out there that could do this or any way of programming it so that once it reads the SD Card it makes the password bar visible for logon. Would it be easier to do it with Linux since it is open source? Any help in the right direction is appreciated. Thanks
I'm trying to spoof my Mac Address on a modified version of linux (Android). The main problem is that because it has been stripped down, the ifconfig command has been stripped out, and I only can use the 'ip' busybox command.
I've been trying to use
ip link set address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx dev tiwlan0
but I get the error,
ip: socket: Operation not permitted
Any help?
What is the last version of Skype that runs on a Mac OS X Panther 10.3.9 ?
I've download a so called compatible version but it doesn't start.
I've also heard that it can be a problem coming from Quicktime version...
What is your favourite free Tiling Window Manager for Mac? Open Source would be a plus, but it's not required.
NOTE: I know about Expose', but it doesn't "tile" the windows as far as I know (but I would be glad to be corrected).
Hi,
I used to rename file in Linux via a rename command:
rename 's/old_pattern/new_pattern/g' *glob
Is there something similar in Mac OSX (snow leopard)? Thanks
Using Mac OS on multiple monitor is great, but after removing external monitor (2nd monitor) usually windows position originally on the external monitor doesn't get re-positioned to default monitor. Is there any shortcut key or utilities that can reset window position for this kind of usage?
I search for the app, that captures current window content, by scrolling it's content.
The only app, that can do this, is FastStone Capture.
Do you know such apps for the Mac ?
Thanks
Hi,
I have a collection of .tif files but when I open them on my Mac 10.5 they show up as solid black and I don't know why.

Upon further inspection at really high brightness there are some out of focus objects viewable. It looks as if I am getting the first couple bits of each pixel but not the entire range of values.
We're moving all our Mac's from local logins to OpenDirectory logins in an effort to keep everything secure and to also solve issues we have with a Tiger server buggering permissions on an AFP shared drive.
To cut it short, I want users to be able to login to their OpenDirectory account and I then want the AFP share point to mount using the credentials they just logged in with.
Firstly, is this possible (I assumed it was) and secondly how might I go about doing it?
Cheers,
Dave
I have a Mac connected to two different networks (wireless en1 and ethernet en0 ). The ethernet network is the preferred (System Preferences-Set Service Order).
I'd like to be able to print to a printer on the wireless network side, without having to go to System Preferences and make the wireless network come first in the service order.
Is there a way to add a route for a specific printer?
I've got a mac with a firewire port but no HDMI port. I want to connect it to my HDTV. I've done this many times with a PC via HDMI and Svideo, but I'm not sure how to connect my new MacBook Pro to my HDTV. Any ideas?
I am unable to locate the MAC address in a new computer with Windows 7. I've tried ipconfig/all to which I got "no items match your search". I also tried getmac. A screen flashed very briefly with what appeared to be the information but was not there long enough to read.
