• Client-side Replication for SQL Server?

  I'd like to have some degree of fault tolerance / redundancy with my SQL Server Express database. I know that if I upgrade to a pricier version of SQL Server, I can get "Replication" built in. But I'm wondering if anyone has experience in managing replication on the client side. As in, from my application: Every time I need to create, update or delete records from the database -- issue the statement to all n servers directly from the client side Every time I need to read, I can do so from one representative server (other schemes seem possible here, too). It seems like this logic could potentially be added directly to my Linq-To-SQL Data Context. Any thoughts?

• How do you calculate the reflex angle given to vectors in 3D space?

  I want to calculate the angle between two vectors a and b. Lets assume these are at the origin. This can be done with theta = arccos(a . b / |a| * |b|) However arccos gives you the angle in [0, pi], i.e. it will never give you an angle greater than 180 degrees, which is what I want. So how do you find out when the vectors have gone past the 180 degree mark? In 2D I would simply let the sign of the y-component on one of the vectors determine what quadrant the vector is in. But what is the easiest way to do it in 3D?

• Website Sitemaps and <priority>, is it working?

  Hi, My "Privacy Policy" page is seen more important by Google than other really more important pages on my website. I'm currently creating a script to generate a sitemap, should I bother with the priority? How do you effectively assign priorities to pages? I consider one of my page important but the page have less content than another one less important to my eyes... but maybe Google bot will see it the other way around. If my degree of "importantness" differs from the one of Google, will I get penalized on the ranking for a particular page? Thank you for sharing your black art with us :P

• 3d user experience with HTML5 and Javascript

  I've to build a 3D user experience with HTML5 and any required JS library which provides such functionality. 3D scene consists of a cylindrical pipe and surface. It has 360 degree rotation and can zoom in and out. As user selects a parameter, specific value of that parameter at various depth of pipe in surface should display. I've searched for HTML5 3d and JS libraries and found three.js could help for this.Also found this useful presentation on HTML 3d engine: http://projects.mariusgundersen.net/OnGameStart/#1 .But as this is my first time with HTML5 3d modeling, how should I initiate to build ? What parameters should be considered ? Which tools and libraries would best fit for such requirements ? I would like to create a 3d model using HTML5 and JS 3d engine as shown in the 1st image.

• Client/JS Framework for "Unsaved Data" Protection?

  Hey all- we have a typical web application that is essentially a data entry application with lots of screens some of which have some degree of complexity. We need to provide that standard capability on making sure if the user forgets to click the "Save" button before navigating away or closing their browser they get a warning and can cancel (but only when there is unsaved or dirty data). I know the basics of what I've got to do-- in fact I'm sure I've done it all before over the years (tie in to onbeforeunload, track the "dirty" state of the page, etc...) but before I embark on coding this YET AGAIN, does anyone have some suggestions for libraries already out there (free or otherwise) that will help out? • How do you detect a website visitor's country (Specifically, US or not)?

  I need to show different links for US and non-US visitors to my site. This is for convenience only, so I am not looking for a super-high degree of accuracy, and security or spoofing are not a concern. I know there are geotargeting services and lists, but this seems like overkill since I only need to determine (roughly) if the person is in the US or not. I was thinking about using JavaScript to get the user's timezone, but this appears to only give the offset, so users in Canada, Mexico, and South America would have the same value as people in the US. Are there any other bits of information available either in JavaScript, or PHP, short of grabbing the IP address and doing a lookup, to determine this?

• How can I break into the development business scene if I'm the new kid on the block?

  I'm about 1 semester short of graduating from college with my Systems Engineer degree. I've started my own software development company here in a country in South America last week, and so far I managed to land myself a nice account. I have to build a simple enough program that will take me 6-7weeks to complete and I'll charge 2000$. 40% up front and the rest on completion. While this is great and I'm really excited about my first project (Hell it's a landmark for any professional!), I'm already setting my eye on landing projects that will be visible for other companies to see. I've spoken with many people in my trade around town and it seems there are two companies that manage the big accounts with other small companies scrounging around for the scraps. How can I break this so called fellowship that is pretty much a monopoly here? Any and all suggestions will be massively appreciated.

• Will being self-taught limit me?

  I'm 21 and am pretty efficient in html/css, python, and javascript. I also know my way around lisp languages and enjoy programing in them. My problem is that I'm extremely self-taught and not quite confident that I could land a job programing, but I really need a job soon as I've just become a father. I haven't even created a resume yet because I'm not really sure what to put on it except my lone experience. So I wanted to ask, will being primarily self-taught with some experience on small projects I've done for a few clients limit me too much? I mean I know I need some kind of education so I've enrolled part time in a community college to work on a degree in computer science, but it's years till then. And if it will limit me a lot, what kind of skills would be good to work on to make my chances any better? Thank You

• Calculating 2D angles for 3D objects in perspective

  Imagine a photo, with the face of a building marked out. Its given that the face of the building is a rectangle, with 90 degree corners. However, because its a photo, perspective will be involved and the parallel edges of the face will converge on the horizon. With such a rectangle, is it possible to calculate the angle in 2D of the edges of a face that is 90 degrees to it? In the image below, the blue is the face marked on the photo, and I'm wondering how to calculate the 2D vector of the red lines of the other face:

• Flash causing jerky javascript animations

  Hi Guys, I'm developing a site which has a flash background playing a small video loop scaled to fill the whole background. Over the top I have a number of HTML elements which are animated using javascript. The problem I am having is that (predominantly in FF, but also in others to a lesser degree) the flash seems to be causing my javascript animations to run rather jerky, and in some cases missing the animation altogether and just jumping to the end state. Does anybody have any thoughts on how to make the 2 work together nicely? Many thanks Matt

  Hi , I have a Fortran 77 program code , I am using fortran power station on XP . I wrote this program because I am studying Master's degree in Mechanics , It is a very long Finite element method code. when I press the compile order it shows me the following message : "fatal error F1002: compiler is out of heap space in pass 2" I googled the problem , and found the following solutions : http://www.microsofttranslator.com/BV.aspx?ref=CSSKB&from=en&to=ar&a=http://support.microsoft.com/kb/112345/en-us?fr=1 But to be honest , I did not understand the solution !!!   I've been using C on some projects for a master's degree but have never built production software with it. (.NET & Javascript are my bread and butter.) Obviously, the need to free() memory that you malloc() is critical in C. This is fine, well and good if you can do both in one routine. But as programs grow, and structs deepen, keeping track of what's been malloc'd where and what's appropriate to free gets harder and harder. I've looked around on the interwebs and only found a few generic recommendations for this. What I suspect is that some of you long-time C coders have come up with your own patterns and practices to simplify this process and keep the evil in front of you. So: how do you recommend structuring your C programs to keep dynamic allocations from becoming memory leaks?

• Visual Studio: What approach do you use to 'template' plumbing for similiar projects?

  When building ASP.NET projects there is a certain amount of boilerplate, or plumbing that needs to be done, which is often identical across projects. This is especially the case with MVC and ALT.NET approaches. [I'm thinking of things such as: IoC, ORM, Solution structure (projects), Session Management, User Management, I18n etc.] I would like to know what approach you find best for 'reusing' this plumbing accross projects? Have a 'master solution' which you duplicate and rename somehow? (I'm using a this to a degree at the moment, but it's fairly messy. Would be interested how people do this 'better') Mainly rely on Shared Library projects? (I find this appropriate for some things, but too restrictive for things that have to be customised) Code generation tools, such as T4?   Suppose you were able keep track of the news mentions of different entities, like say "Steve Jobs" and "Steve Ballmer". What are ways that could you tell whether the amount of mentions per entity per a given time period was unusual relative to their normal degree of frequency of appearance? I imagine that for a more popular person like Steve Jobs an increase of like 50% might be unusual (an increase of 1000 to 1500), while for a relatively unknown CEO an increase of 1000% for a given day could be possible (an increase of 2 to 200). If you didn't have a way of scaling that your unusualness index could be dominated by unheard-ofs getting their 15 minutes of fame.

  I need to write a unit test suite for a project I am developing in my spare time. Being a CL newbie I was overwhelmed by the amount of choices for a CL implementation, I spent quite some time to choose one. Now I am facing exactly the same thing with unit test frameworks. A quick glance at http://www.cliki.net/test%20framework shows 20 unit test frameworks! Choice is good but for a novice like me this can be a bit confusing and given the number of frameworks it would be painful to try them all. I would like to use a framework which: Is reasonably well maintained Easy to use but with some degree of flexibility Offers some sort of integration with Emacs (or it is possible to easily integrate it with Emacs) Integration with git post-commit hooks Integration with a continous integration system (such as buildbot) What are your experiences in this field?

• Can I expect a performance gain from removing this JOIN?

  I have a "items" table with 1 million rows and a "users" table with 20,000 rows. When I select from the "items" table I do a join on the "users" table (items.user_id = user.id), so that I can grab the "username" from the users table. I'm considering adding a username column to the items table and removing the join. Can I expect a decent performance increase from this? It's already quite fast, but it would be nice to decrease my load (which is pretty high). The downside is that if the user changes their username, items will still reflect their old username, but this is okay with me if I can expect a decent performance increase. I'm asking stackoverflow because benchmarks aren't telling me too much. Both queries finish very quickly. Regardless, I'm wondering if removing the join would lighten load on the database to any significant degree.

• Drawing bezier curve with limited subdivisions in OpenGL

  Is it possible to tell OpenGL to draw a 4 degree (5 control points) bezier curve with 10 subdivisions? I was trying with this: point ctrlpts[] = {..., ..., ..., ...}; glMap1f(GL_MAP1_VERTEX_3, 0, 1, 3, 5, ctrlpts); glBegin(GL_LINE_STRIP); for (i = 0; i <= 30; i++) glEvalCoord1f((GLfloat) i/30.0); glEnd(); But this just draws the curve nicely. I am thinking that I want the algorithm inside the bezier curve to draw only until 10 subdivisions and then stop. The line should look a little facet.

• Calculating the union of 2 longitudal intervals (that may wrap around 180 degrees)

  The story: I have a LatLongBounds class that represents an area on the surface of the earth by a latitudinal interval (bounded by north & south - not important to this question) and a longitudinal interval (bounded by east and west; both normalized to a range [-180, 180] - negative being a westerly direction). In order to be able to represent an area that straddles the 180 degree meridian the value of west may be set to be greater than east (eg. the range west = 170, east = -170 will straddle said meridian). In effect the longitudinal interval may wrap around at 180 degrees (or equivalently -180 degrees). My Question: Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can calculate the union of two longitudinal intervals that may wrap around at 180 degrees. Thanks.

I have decided to do something on adaptive websites that implements customisation, personalisation and basically adaptation via heat maps and weblogs. • How do I handle a low job offer for an entry level position?

  Hi guys! I recently graduated with MS in CS and I am excited because I just received a job offer from a company I really like for an entry-level sw engineer position. The thing is that, although the salary is not my priority and I care way more about gaining experience, their offer unfortunately is way below of what I expected. Actually after I did some research I realized that, comparing to the average salary range for the entry-level sw engineering positions in my area (one of the most expensive areas in the US) supposedly [X - Y]$ (where X is the lowest average and Y the highest), their offer is 20% below X! I wouldnt have a problem accepting an offer around X but this one is even lower than the lowest. Can I counter offer the X which is 20% more than what they offered me but at the same time is the minimum average? -- And mind you that I didnt even take under consideration the fact that I hold a MS degree which in many cases yields to a 5-10% more pay.

Also, I come from a non CS background (no formal degree) Recently, while being interviewed for a job, I was asked about implementing a queue using a stack. I fumbled and wan't able to answer the question. After, the interview I could do it(had to spend some time). • Which set(s) of video lectures for computer science?

  As most of you know a couple of top universities (MIT, Stanford, etc) around the world are now publishing videos of their lectures online. I am advancing to the third and final year of my computer science degree this September and I was thinking about spending some time during the summer to watch a couple of lectures, in order to improve my understanding of algorithms, complexity, programming, software engineering, etc. Now I don't have infinite time to spend so I can't watch all of the lectures from all of the universities so I was wondering if you could suggest me which sets to watch from each one (something like "Algorithms from MIT", "Programming from Yale", etc).
