• JVM specification and Java compiler code useful for SCJP preparation ?

  I'm preparing the SCJP exam with the almost official study book ("SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Exam 310-065") I understand that Java programming is writting code that fulfills a certain high-level contract; So that Java can stay platform-independent. However, I have trouble understanding and remembering things when it comes to highly specific SCJP items (and they are numerous) The book stays high-level and does not provide examples of how one compiler would handle things. This is the same thing for runtime issues (JVM level): things are too much abstract for me. Rules often seems arbitrary and therefore, with no well defined purpose, are difficult to remember. Or maybe it's that sometimes I just don't get the underlying purpose. And here is the question: Would a JVM specification and/or some java compiler code help in preparing the SCJP? Have you had the need for such material or is the book sufficient enough? Also, please share the resources you used, apart from the book.

• How to get gesture IDs

  Is there anyway to get a list of gesture ids, from the gesture library that has been created using gesturebuilder. I want to link each gesture to an images, so some sort of an id or name is needed. I have looked at the samples and other online material avaialbe for gestures, and there is no information on this matter. Any help in this matter would be appreciated. • How to create a conditional measure in SQL Server 2008 Analysis services

  Hi there I am not sure if the title has the correct terms, I have a developer and am very new to cubes. I have a cube which has data associated to materials that are broken down into chemical compounds. For example a rock material has 10% of this chemical and 10% of that chemical, etc. Samples are taken daily and sample is a dimension with date, etc. So, the measure needs to average by the sample dimension but needs to sum across the chemical compound dimension (To add up to 100% for example). Is this at all possible?

• Ideas for band site, which technology to use?

  I am attempting to design and build a website for my friends band. There is minimal content to be included such as bio,news,enbemdded Audio/Visual material. My web dev expertise is average. I'm basicaly looking for inspiration, I was edging towards embedding a silverlight deepzoom xap object to add some visual stimulation, perhaps by featuring a high res photo of the bandshardware/equipment which zooms when mouseover occurs. Does anyone have any cool ideas for a central feature for this site, and which way to approact it in terms of technique (js,css,silverlight etc) If anyone has any immediate ideas which they think would be cool then I am eager to hear them!   HI All I need to write a scientific application in C++ doing a lot of computations and using a lot of memory. I have part of the job but due to high requirements in terms of resources I was thinking to start moving to OpenMPI. Before doing that I have a simple curiosity: If I understood the principle of OpenMPI is the developer that has the task of splitting the jobs over different nodes calling SEND and RECEIVE based on node available at that time. Do you know if it does exist some library or OS or whatever that has this capability letting my code reamain as it is now? Basically something that connects all computers and let share as one their memory and CPU? I am a bit confused because of the high material available on the topic. Should I look at cloud computing? or Distributed Shared Memory? Can you help me or address me a bit? Thanks

• Possible to create JSR 286 portlet using Coldfusion?

  I was just thinking this morning, since ColdFusion is essentially built on JAVA, is it possible to create JSR 286 portlets using coldfusion? A search revealed that it might be possible, but I cannot find any material on this? Reason I ask is because I would love to be able to create Liferay compatible portlets with ColdFusion, as I am not a JAVA dev. Thoughts? Does anyone have any tutorials or references on this subject? EDIT Is there anyways to get CF portlets without CF running in the container? I'm curious how this would work with having only one license of CF. Would I need another license to run under liferay (if I can even run in liferay?)

• Med-PC Programing Language

  There's this programing language called Med-PC that works with animal behavior. I'm trying to learn a bit about it, but i can't seem to find any kind of books or material about it. I've "google it" but all i seem to find are some references about it and a PDF explaining the installing of the program itself and sensors(for the experiments), not actual programing instructions. I'm looking for some kind of guidance, documents or books, some kind of reference where i can improve and learn about this language, or if it is based on some other language. I just need some reference about it. So i've resorted to StackOverFlow to see if anybody has worked, knows about it or can point me some links/books about it.

• Are there any good materials or examples on creating a custom Designer in the Delphi IDE

  I am working on creating a custom form designer in the Delphi IDE. I'm trying to use the RegisterCustomModule, TBaseCustomModule, and ICustomModule functions, classes, and interfaces. My first question on this pointed me to the Delphi Developer's Handbook and the idea that I could even create a custom form designer. However, that book seems to be all Delphi 3 information and things have really changed since then. I'm not finding any material in the Delphi Help file, and searches have not returned very much. I did find the Accidental Programmer's page on the Open Tools, but that looks like it was last up dated in 1998? It does at least have the correct unit names and uses the new interfaces. I'm willing to track down and buy an older book if that is the best reference.

• Writing an OS for Motorola 68K processor. Can I emulate it? And can I test-drive OS development?

  Next term, I'll need to write a basic operating system for Motorola 68K processor as part of a course lab material. Is there a Linux emulator of a basic hardware setup with that processor? So my partners and I can debug quicker on our computers instead of physically restarting the board and stuff. Is it possible to apply test-driven development technique to OS development? • Bitmap manipulation as a referenced object

  I am working with a Bitmap object that I add annotations or copyright material to the image and then return the modified bitmap. My problem is that the Bitmap won't hold the changes made to it as it moves along the chain. I am treating it as a reference type and would assume that as it gets passed to each class it would carry the changes made to it. I have verified that the code inside of the MarkImage() classes does function, but which ever one gets called last is the one that has changes. • Books/resources for help with extracting useful feedback from clients?

  I'm a web application developer looking for a book or something similar that can help with effectively communicating with clients who have a very vague or unrealistic idea of what they'd like out of the work I'm doing. Some fictional, though not by much, examples of situations: Clients who are not familiar with using the Internet, and insist on features that are not even remotely feasible (ex. time travel) Clients who are unable to express accurately what they're looking for (ex. "I know that's what I said and signed off on, but it's not what I meant") Clients who refuse to attend meetings or review sessions to answer questions or define requirements (which makes any agile development impossible) For the most part, I'm trying to find best practices for how to handle these kinds of things on a team-building level. The best ways to effectively address serious project roadblocks without sounding like a total jerk. Any recommendations for reading material on this topic?

  I'm trying to accomplish the following ridiculous task: I have a text file containing a set of fully qualified filesnames. I want to iterate through the file and append each line to a common variable, that can be passed to a command line tool. For example, the file might be: C:\dir\test.txt C:\WINDOWS\test2.txt C:\text3.txt and I'd like to assign them to some variable 'a' such that: a = "C:\dir\test.txt C:\WINDOWS\test2.txt C:\text2.txt" A secondary question is - what is a good batch file reference? I'm finding some stuff in the Windows material, and a lot of home-grown websites, but nothing particularly complete. Thanks!

• Why is rails called a dsl?

  Recently, when I tried to explain why Rails is a DSL to an intern at my organisation, I was not able to articulate my reasonings to the effect I would like to. Maybe I do not understand the space well enough to teach the nuances. Redirecting him to Martin Fowler' article or the google ranked one InfoQ or other material has not helped much either. Can some explain why Rails is a DSL with an example / parallel situation which is not voodoo stuff for someone who is fairly new to the world of code? Understanding the ideology might also help in elaborating the intricacies of the rails ecosystem?

• Just how much do I want to make virtual?

  I am writing an abstract superclass where literally every method is going to be overridden. There is some default functionality I could implement, but most of the time it's enough to leave the implementation to the subclass writer. Since just about every method is going to be overwritten, how much should I make virtual and how much should I just leave as regular methods? In the current incarnation, everything is virtual, but I still haven't let this loose to anyone to use, so the design is flexible. What advantages/disadvantages are there to virtual functions? Links to good reading material about this would be appreciated.

• Very simple mod_rewrite questions

  1- Does mod_rewrite means that if I make this url: domain.com/ad.php?id=8498292 INTO domain.com/8498292 that all links on my website will have to be changed to the later above? example the link: domain.com/ad.php?id=8498292 wont work now, unless I replace it with domain.com/8498292 ? Or will the server know that they are the same still? 2- Will the rewritten link appear rewritten in the browsers adress bars also, so if I enter domain.com/ad.php?id=8498292 it will actually appear as domain.com/8498292 in the adress bar itself? 3- Will images and all other related links and material on the page whose link is rewritten remain intact? ie will pictures and links still work FROM that page which are relative?   I'm coming across references to 'Grails' and 'Groovy' quite often these days.. mostly on how great a productivity booster it is as opposed to standard J2EE, or things like JSF, Struts etc.. And there's also an impressive set of case studies in support of this on their web site too. So I just thought I would explore some of it.. As I start off on this, I was curious if there was any material (link, blog, article, paper..) that explains what are the special features in Grails+Groovy (and not found elsewhere, in the J2EE world) that makes it a more productive environment to work in? • best way to make this app/website combo?

  I have an idea for an app that lets different bars upload drink specials via a webpage to that app. They would log in the website, and the website would prompt them with a box to input the drink specials. When they are done, the app pulls the information and creates a card for that bar. The app would launch into a week view where you select the day you want to see specials for. After the day is selected, it brings you to a scroll view with different bars' cards laid out vertically, each taking up the width of the screen, allowing the user to scroll through the deals for that day of the week. How should I go about doing this if I have very little programming experience? Is there any convention in doing an app like this? Can anyone suggest any reading material that would help? Thank you!

• Programmatically get valid switch/case values

  When MATLAB scans through cases in a switch/case block, does it remember the values that it skips, and is it possible to access that list? I have a few functions with long switch\case block and I would like to have them return a list of valid case values if they make it down to otherwise. For instance, I have a function that returns a set of optical constants for a material. It currently has about 20 different materials and it is growing as I consider new ones. I realize I can brute-force it and just re-type all of the valid cases into a cell array under otherwise and have the function throw an error and return the list of valid responses, but maintaining both lists without errors or laziness creeping in over time is challenging.

• Optimal ASP.Net cache duration for a large site?

  I've read lots of material on how to do ASP.Net caching but little on the optimal duration that pages should be cached for. Let's say that I have a popular site with 50,000 pages. The content does not change frequently, so I could cache pages for up to an hour if I wanted. The server has 16 GB of RAM, but database connections are limited. How long should pages be cached for? My thinking is that if I set the cache duration too high (let's say 60 minutes), I will fill up memory with a fraction of the total content, which will continually be shuffled in and out of memory. Furthermore, let's say that 10% of the pages are responsible for 90% of traffic. If the popular pages are hit every second, and the unpopular ones every hour, then a 60 second cache would only keep the load-intensive content cached without sacrificing freshness. Should numerous but rarely-accessed content be cached at all?

  SQL in Sixty Seconds is indeed tremendous fun to do. Every week, we try to come up with some new learning which we can share in Sixty Seconds. In this busy world, we all have sixty seconds to learn something new – no matter how much busy we are. In this episode of the series, we talk about another interesting feature of SQL Server Management Studio. In SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) we have two button side by side. 1) Execute (!) and 2) Debug (>). It is quite confusing to a few developers. The debug button which looks like a play button encourages developers to click on the same thinking it will execute the code. Also developer with a Visual Studio background often click it because of their habit. However, Debug button is not the same as Execute button. In most of the cases developers want to click on Execute to run the query but by mistake they click on Debug and it wastes their valuable time. It is very easy to fix this. If developers are not frequently using a debug feature in SQL Server they should hide it from the toolbar itself. This will reduce the chances to incorrectly click on the debug button greatly as well save lots of time for developer as invoking debug processes and turning it off takes a few extra moments. In this Sixty second video we will discuss how one can hide the debug button and avoid confusion regarding execution button. I personally use function key F5 to execute the T-SQL code so I do not face this problem that often. • PowerShell Script to Create PowerShell Profile

  Utilizing a PowerShell profile can help any PowerShell user save time getting up and running with their work.  For those unfamiliar a PowerShell profile is a file you can store any PowerShell commands that you want to run when you fire up a PowerShell console (or ISE.)  In my typical profiles (example here) I load assemblies (like SharePoint 2007 DLL), set aliases, set environment variable values (such as max history), and perform other general customizations to make my work easier.  Below is a sample script that will check to see if a PowerShell profile (Console or ISE) exists and create it if not found.  The .ps1 script file version can also be downloaded from my SkyDrive here. Note: if downloading the .ps1 file, be sure you have enabled unsigned scripts to run on your machine as I have not signed mine.   $folderExists = test-path -path $Env:UserProfile\Documents\WindowsPowerShell if($folderExists -eq $false) { new-item -type directory -path $Env:UserProfile\Documents\WindowsPowerShell > $null echo "Containing folder for profile created at: $Env:UserProfile\Documents\WindowsPowerShell" }   $profileExists = test-path -path $profile if($profileExists -eq $false) { new-item -type file -path $profile > $null echo "Profile file created at: $profile" }     A few things to note while going through the above script. $Env:UserProfile represents the personal user folder (c:\documents and settings…. on older OSes like XP and c:\Users… on Win 7) so it adapts to whichever OS you are running but was tested against Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. “ > $null” sends the command to a null stream.  Essentially this is equivalent to DOS scripting of “@ECHO OFF” by suppressing echoing the command just run, but only for the specific command it is appended to.  I haven’t yet found a better way to accomplish command suppression, but this is definitely not required for the script to work. $profile represent a standard variable to the file path of the profile file.  It is dynamic based on whether you are running PowerShell Console or ISE.   Conclusion     In less than two weeks (Apr. 10th to be exact) I’ll be heading down to SharePoint Saturday Charlotte (SPSCLT) to give two presentations on using PowerShell with SharePoint.  Since I’ll be prepping a lot of material for PowerShell I thought it only appropriate to pass along this nice little script I recently created.  If you’ve never used a PowerShell profile this is a great chance to start using one.  If you’ve been using a profile before, perhaps you learned a trick or two to add to your toolbox.  For those of you in the Charlotte, NC area sign up for the SharePoint Saturday and see some great content and community with great folks.         -Frog Out
