• TCP > COM1 for receiving messages and displaying on POS display pole

  I currently have a Java Applet running on my web page that communicates to a display pole via COM1. However since the Java update I can no longer run self-signed Java Applets and I figure it would just be easier to send an AJAX request back to the server and have the server send a response to a TCP port on the computer...the computer would need a TCP COM virtual adapter. How do I install a virtual adapter to go from a TCP port to COM1? I've looked into com0com and that is just confusing as hell to me, and I don't see how to connect any ports to COM1. I've tried tcp2com but it doesn't seem to install the service in Windows 7 x64. I've tried com2tcp and the interface seems like it WOULD work (I haven't tested), but I don't want an app running on the desktop...it needs to be a service that runs in the background. So to summarize how it would work: Web page on comp1 sends AJAX request to server Server sends text response to comp1 on port 999 comp1 has virtual COM port listening on port 999, sends data to COM1 pole displays data

• Add Control Panel items to Windows 8.1 Search

  Windows 8.1 claims to search in all indexed locations. However when I tried to open "Mail" (i.e. Mlcfg32.cpl) by typing "Mail" in Search, magic didn't happen. Instead I had to scramble all the way through Control Panel. Is it possible to add Control Panel items to those indexed locations? Or is it just the thing Microsoft forgot about? (e.g. forgot on intention, so users would make use of their new "Settings" applet).

• force connection using USB adapter

  Hi all I am new to Linux, so even though this is probably a simple problem it remains unsolved after more then 3 hours of googling :-( I run running ubuntu 10.04 LTS on an Acer Aspire 5520G . the laptop has a wireless adapter, but since I wanted better range I got an Edimax EW-7711USN USB adapter. now , when running ifconfig I am able to see both adapters where as the laptop native adapter is listed as wlan0 and the usb adapter is listed as wlan1. but listing available networks from the wireless network applet , all the connection are listed under wlan0 , the usb adapter is costencly listed as disconnected. this is what I have been trying to do so far 1) ifconfig wlan0 down - I got disconnected from the net but still was not able to get the usb to connect 2) used the wireless connection dialog to connect to a hidden network with the usb adapter - I was able to connect to the network but with no Internet access 3) disable wireless using the laptop function button - both wireless adapters where disabled can anyone suggest a way to connect to to the wireless network using the USB adapter rather then the built in one ? • Wifi won't connect to certain networks

  As I write this, I'm in a coffee shop on my laptop, and I am trying to connect to the free wifi network they offer. Every time I select their network from the wifi applet drop down menu, it connects for a second and then disconnects. At the same time, I have my Android phone with me, and it connects to the coffee shop's network without problem. There are a couple of people around me also using the same network with no issues. I asked the staff to check and as far as they can tell there is no problem with their router or anything. I have tried rebooting, but it has not made a difference. I have double and triple checked that I am using the correct WEP password. As an added wrinkle, when I connect to another network, it seems to connect (although I can't use them because they are paid gateway services). So I'm able to ask this question now because I have tethered my laptop to my phone, but it's slow and a workaround, not a solution. All indications are that it's a problem with my computer against this one network. Why would that be and how can I fix it?

• VirtualBox guest not recognizing daylight savings transition

  I want to test an app's behaviour during transitions in and out of daylight savings time. I therefore want to be able to set the date and time of a VirtualBox VM, (preferably from the Control Panel applet, but from a batch file is fine) and not have it "corrected" to the host's time for me. I have turned of Internet sync in the guest and that seems to have achieved this, so I wrote a couple of batch files to set the date to a value just prior to the time of transition in and out of daylight savings time. The VirtualBox guest doesn't seem to recognize the daylight savings changeover date - it just marches on past with no change of time, no message (yes - "Adjust clock for daylight savings" is enabled). Any ideas?

• Ubuntu 12.04 + Bluetooth problems with maintaining connection

  I have an Apple Wireless Mouse, Apple Wireless Keyboard, Apple Wireless Trackpad, and a pair of headphones. All of these connect to the computer via a Bluetooth dongle. After several hours I've managed to get the devices paired (all except the headphones) with the computer. However, I'm facing a problem where a connection can't be maintained even with one device. I first started with the gnome bluetooth applet, this couldn't even pick up devices, so I installed blueman, and this at least detected the devices but it couldn't keep the connection going. Then i read somewhere to get hidd installed and use the command line using the mac address of the device (which I got from blueman) and this worked really well, the connection was stable, but there's still a couple of issues that I need help with: If I am to use hidd I need to execute this via terminal, which means for the keyboard and the mouse I need to have two of each. This doesn't make sense. I need the bluetooth daemon to have started with the devices picked up a lot earlier, and especially at grub bootloader. The mouse and the trackpad both work if i use hidd, however, I cannot get the right mouse to work nor the scroll wheel to work. The headphones don't work period, they don't work with any of the bluetooth applets, and with hidd either. When I use blueman aplet, it attempts to pair and states 'Authentication Rejected". The headphone is Phillips SHB9100. If someone can help me with this, I would be grateful.

• Sound card issues (High Definition Audio Controller)

  I have a 5-year-old Acer Aspire 4520. Until a month back it was working beautifully on Windows 7 32bit. But then out of the blue, the sound stopped working. I've tried reinstalling the OS 3-4 times. The sound came back a couple of times, but it stopped working after a reboot. Even after installing the sound drivers, I don't see any entry in the Playback tab of the Sound applet in Control Panel. I see a High Definition Audio Controller entry in Device Manager. I disabled and uninstalled it, but Windows reinstalls it automatically. I'll share specific hardware details if anybody here needs to know. The processor is "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-55". Any help would be appreciated.

• How to log Windows server share connections?

  Can anyone make a suggestion for the best way to log connections and disconnections from Windows workstations to a Windows Server 2003 file share? We're having some issues with workstations that have a drive mapped to a server that seem to work fine for awhile and then suddenly appear to get disconnected from the server (with files open). Needless to say this causes some data corruption and error messages. It would help me to troubleshoot the problem if we could somehow monitor and log the session connections and disconnections, to attempt to correlate the connectivity issues with what actions the user is taking at the time and what the server is doing. I just haven't been able to find a way to do this. Specifically I'm talking about the same information that is displayed in the Computer Management control panel applet in the "System Tools|Shared Folders|Sessions" page. Thanks!

• Is there a way to get a 10000x10000 virtual resolution desktop?

  I have a java applet map viewer and I'd like to plot out the map it displays. To do that I need to open it in a high enough resolution to avoid too much stitching. Is there any possible way I could get a desktop with such high resolution? So far I've been able to use panning 2560x1920 by booting windows 7 in VmWare Player. Would it be possible to get it higher? Maybe this would be doable on Linux? The whole thing can be laggy as hell as long as it will render my screenshot...

• Authenticated proxy in Windows command prompt

  My Internet access is delivered through an authenticated proxy. This is setup correctly in the "Internet Options" control panel applet and all browsing/GUI apps work fine. For cmd, proxy settings are typically set by exporting http_proxy. The applications I'm trying to use are git and Putty's pscp.exe. I've tried the following syntax to no avail: set http_proxy=http://username:[email protected]:port/ I've also experimented with Netsh.exe and ProxyCfg.exe with no luck. How does one configure an authenticated proxy in the Windows command prompt?

  I'm running desktop Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell laptop. Previously it was Ubuntu 9.04. After some period of time (lets say 3-4 months) my X fails to start automatically after some restart calls. If that takes place my network manager applet doesn't start either (after I do startx). Can any one point out what I'm missing/what's the problem? EDDITED I get a perfect server boot meaning there's no Xorg started. Command line interface is all I get starting from login and further.

• Java Applets fail to launch in Windows 7 64bit

  Hi can you help? I'm having great trouble launching Java applets using Windows 7 64 bit. I have the 32 bit version of Java installed (as recommended, for use with 32 bit browsers). When I click on an Java applet to open it the Java logo shows with a circular progress bar, but the process goes no further, just the progress bar going round and round. There are no error messages. The computer is a few months old and Java has never worked properly. I've tried with both IE9 and Chrome, followed the suggested fixes, uninstall then reinstall, check certain browser settings (all were in order), check Java control panel settings (again all was in order) delete the internet cache etc, tried 32bit & 64bit Java side by side. All to no avail. I'm baffled Is there anything else to try, or do I have to accept a computer without Java (Very inconvenient!) Thanks

• Windows 7 Keyboard Repeat Rate and Delay are Reset on Resume from Standby / Sleep

  I always keep my keyboard repeat rate at the maximum and the delay at the minimum for optimal keyboard responsiveness. Under Windows 7 however, I have found that the rate and delay are reset to the defaults (ie the one’s that are set with a fresh Windows installation) whenever the system resumes from sleep and requires opening the keyboard control panel applet (which already shows the desired settings) and manually setting them again by pressing Enter. I have seen a couple of posts in the Microsoft support forums, but no solutions. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

• NetworkManager detects no networks with a RTL8188CE

  I'm on a 2011 Lenovo Thinkpad T420i with a Realtek RTL8188CE WiFi adapter. Here's the scenario: I pop in the Ubuntu LiveCD to install. Laptop detects all networks in range, I connect to my home network, internet working great. Once Ubuntu finishes installing, the home network I am connected to is the only one which appears in the applet list. Upon restarting or waking from suspend, NetworkManager does not detect any networks – it simply displays "Disconnected" under the Wireless Network section of the menu. I am able to connect to my home network by using the "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network" option and it works immediately. I have yet to test if this works with other SSIDs. I have tried reinstalling the entire OS as well as NetworkManager and my wireless drivers. • Weak-linking with static libraries

  I have declared an external function with a GCC weak attribute in a .c file: extern int weakFunction( ) __attribute__ ((weak)); Compiled object file has weakFunction defined as a weak symbol. Output of nm: 1791: w weakFunction I am calling the weak defined function as follows: if (weakFunction != NULL) { weakFunction(); } When I link the program by defining the object files as parameters to GCC (gcc main.o weakf.o -o main.exe) weak symbols work fine. If I leave the weakf.o out of linking, the function address is NULL in main.c and the function won't be called. Problem is, when weakf.o is inside a static library, for some reason the linker doesn't find the function and the function address always ends up being NULL. Static library is created with ar: ar rcs weaklibrary weakf.o Anyone had similar problems?

• struct method linking

  I'm updating some old code that has several POD structs that were getting zero'd out by memset (don't blame me...I didn't write this part). Part of the update changed some of them to classes that use private internal pointers that are now getting wiped out by the memset. So I added a [non-virtual] reset() method to the various structs and refactored the code to call that instead. One particular struct developed an "undefined reference to `blah::reset()'" error. Changing it from a struct to a class fixed the error. Calling nm on the .o file h, the mangled function names for that method look the same (whether it's a class or a struct). I'm using g++ 4.4.1, on Ubuntu. I hate the thought that this might be a compiler/linker bug, but I'm not sure what else it could be. Am I missing some fundamental difference between structs and classes? I thought the only meaningful ones were the public/private defaults and the way everyone thinks about them.

• Undefined symbol sunOglCurPrimTablePtr in Solaris-x86

  I was porting a C++ program from Solaris Sparc to Solaris x86. The program utilizes OpenGL library and the compilation is performed in a Sun Ultra27 workstation with the default GCC (3.4.3) and OpenGL library come with the machine. However, the following OpenGL call couldn't found while linking: Undefined symbol first referenced in file sunOglCurPrimTablePtr ../../lib/libgltt.so sunOglCurrentContext ../../lib/libgltt.so which, both sunOglCurPrimTablePtr and sunOglCurrentContext should be available in the default OpenGL library /usr/lib/libGL.so (links to /usr/X11/lib/NVIDIA/libGL.so.1). But I couldn't find anything from it: > nm /usr/lib/libGL.so /usr/lib/libGL.so: Searching on web, SUN or Nvidia didn't lead to any helpful resource. Any clue or helps? Thanks!

• Why does gcc add symbols to non-debug build?

  When I do a release build with gcc (i.e. I do not specify -g), I still seem to end up with symbols in the binary, and have to use strip to remove them. In fact, I can still breakpoint functions and get backtraces in gdb (albeit without line numbers). • Line break and also getting space in HL7 message

  My BizTalk receive XML message as a input message. I am converting that message to HL7 message using Transform in orchestration. Now if input message consists of any empty field in any of the node, the HL7 message breaks up at that postion and also include space in that message.   I have a database of airports with Latitude and Longitude for each point. I want to run a PHP script to find all airports that are nearby a given airport, with their distance and relative direction. I.e. for Airport KLDJ (40-37-02.810N 074-14-40.539W) Airport Nearby KJFK - John F Kennedy Airport (21.2 nm NE) (40-38-23.104N 073-46-44.132W) I have used code from http://www.movable-type.co.uk/scripts/latlong.html to find distance, and tried to use it to find bearing, which might not be right. //BEARING RHUMB LINE $phi = log(tan($lat2/2+pi/4)/tan($lat1/2+pi/4)); $distance['bearing'] = (rad2deg(atan2($theta, $phi)) +180) % 360; I basically want to run all points through this script and find the distance, which I have already, but then the direction. (i.e. N, S, W, E, NW, SW, NE, SE)

• Using Fortran to call C++ Functions

  I'm trying to get some FORTRAN code to call a couple c++ functions that I wrote (c_tabs_ being one of them). Linking and everything works just fine, as long as I'm calling functions that don't belong to a class. My problem is that the functions I want the FORTRAN code to call belong to a class. I looked at the symbol table using nm and the function name is something ugly like this: 00000000 T _ZN9Interface7c_tabs_Ev FORTRAN won't allow me to call a function by that name, because of the underscore at the beginning, so I'm at a loss. The symbol for c_tabs when it's not in a class is quite simple, and FORTRAN has no problems with it: 00000030 T c_tabs_ Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
