• E-commerce + CMS: 2 sites or one?

  Ok, let's say that a customer already has a CMS managed web site but now wants to sell goods online using an E-commerce platform (Magento in this case). My question is, does it make any difference between choosing to have just one site running both CMS and E-commerce (www.mycompany.com, or to have one site for the CMS (www.mycompany.com) and another (www.mycompany-shop.com) for E-commerce? I'd like to know the pros and cons of these approaches, so that I can advice the customer for the best. --EDIT I forgot to say that I'd prefer to have 2 separated web sites. This way I shouldn't have to learn how to integrate them together (one in Python, the other in PHP).

• How to attend one off lectures? [closed]

  Many times, we come across one-off lectures from famous Computer Scientists. Last year, I came across one by Ms. Barbara Liskov, but I could not go because the University Hall was bit far. Tomorrow, there is one by Dr. Knuth! Now the problem I am facing is, "I don't know much about the material he is going to talk", so I am not sure if I should plan and I fear it will be like going for a "temple". :) What is your advise and general strategy that you have followed whenever you wanted to attend a talk or lecture wherein, it may have been worthwhile if it were an introductory tutorial, but instead you were sitting in an advanced 1 hour lecture by a famous scientist.

• How to disable integrated webcam and still be able to use an external one

  I am looking for a way to disable the webcam that is integrated into my laptop. The webcam is using uvcvideo module but I do not want to blacklist it since it is also being used by an external webcam I have. Is there any way of disabling the device itself without touching the modules list? This is how the webcams are listed by lsusb. The first one is an integrated one (It is identified by some apps as BisonCam NB Pro), the second one is the external Logitech C525: Bus 002 Device 004: ID 5986:0361 Acer, Inc Bus 003 Device 002: ID 046d:0826 Logitech, Inc. I have already checked BIOS - there is no way of disabling the webcam from there. Besides I would love to learn how to disable the device by ID anyway. Thanks!

• Class design for calling "the same method" on different classes from one place

  Let me introduce my situation: I have Java EE application and in one package, I want to have classes which will act primarily as cache for some data from database, for example: class that will hold all articles for our website class that will hold all categories etc. Every class should have some update() method, which will update data for that class from database and also some other methods for data manipulation specific for that data type. Now, I would like to call update() method for all class instances (there will be exactly one class instance for every class) from one place. What is the best design?

• Ambiance GTK theme customisation *just* for one user

  Is it possible to customise the appearance of the Ambiance theme just for one user? I have read about the possibility of doing this: sudo vim /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc but could something be done to change: just one setting for just one user? Perhaps changing something in the user's .themes directory? Notice: I would prefer not to copy the full theme to the user directory, just to provide an override mechanism after the "global" theme is applied, independently from the theme if possible, but anyway just specifying what needs to be different, not duplicating the whole theme definition.

• Vertex data split into separate buffers or one one structure?

  Is it better to have all vertex data in one structure like this: class MyVertex { int x,y,z; int u,v; int normalx, normaly, normalz; } Or to have each component (location, normal, texture coordinates) in separate arrays/buffers? To me it always seemed logical to keep the data grouped together in one structure because they'd always be the same for each instance of a shared vertex and that seems to be true for things like character models (ex: the normal should be an average of adjacent normals for smooth lighting). One instance where this doesn't seem to work is other kinds of meshes like say a cube where the texture coordinates for each may be the same but that causes them to be different where the vertices are shared. Does everybody normally keep them separate? Won't this make them less space efficient if there needs to be an instance of texture coordinates and normals for each triangle vertex (They won't be indexed)? Can OpenGL even handle this mixing of indexed (for location) vs non-indexed buffers in the same VBO?

• Multiple copies of JBoss acting as one? [migrated]

  I have a few ideas how to solve the problem, but one question about jboss clustering. Please, keep in mind these applications were written very poorly, that is why they require so much memory and there is nothing i can do about that right now. So, I have clustered applications on Jboss where the application was small enough to run on one box. Meaning that one machine could handle the load. But, the current problem is that i have been asked to run several systems on the same environment. Our machines are virtuals and due to limited hardware, are restricted to 8 GB RAM, which gives jboss about 7GB to itself. Unfortunately, that isn't enough to run the group of applications. Im constantly getting heap errors and crashes. If i cluster 2 or 3 jboss instances together, can i run applications that consume more resources than a single box can handle?

• Prolog: How to make three lists the same lenght (by adding leading zeros)

  I am writing a prolog program to solve a problem. The problem takes three lists as input: solve( [L|Lr] , [R|Rr] , [S|Sr] ) :- Unfortunately the lists all need to be equal length for the program to work. So these work: ?- solve( [A, B, C, D] , [1, 3, 5, 6], [E, F, G, H]). ?- solve( [1] , [2], [3]). But these do not: ?- solve( [A, B, C, D], [1], [B, I, T] ). ?- solve( [A], [1, 2], [4, 5]). What I would like to do is write a predicate(?) to pad the smaller lists with leading zeros. So: solve( [A, B, C, D], [1], [B, I, T] ) would become: solve( [A, B, C, D], [0, 0, 0, 1], [0, B, I, T] ) Any points on how to accomplish this would be awesome. I am from a functional background so I am struggling. Is there a way tell the length of a list? I think I could do that recursively, but it seems like a pain. Thanks

• Creating a WCF ServiceHost object takes three to four minutes on some PCs

  Hello, I have created a WCF service which does not use the app.config to configure itself. However, it takes three to four minutes on some PCs to construct the ServiceHost object. Thinking there was something wrong with my service, I constructed a simple Hello, World service and tried it with that. I have the same issue. According to the profiler, all this time is spent reading in configuration for the service. So I have two questions really. Is it possible to disable reading config from the XML? More importantly, does anyone have any idea why this might be taking such an inordinate amount of time? • 960 GridSystem, three grid_4 inside one grid_12

  I've created a 16 column layout with 960gs with a div class="grid_12" and after that a grid_4 (12+4...) Inside that grid_12 I wanted a three column style (3 grid_4). But the grid_4 boxes don't fit inside the grid_12, the last box drop into a second row. Shouldn't the 960gs framework be able to do this layout for me, have i missed anything? • Oracle Forms on-button-pressed trigger to solve three scenarios

  Hello, I'm writing a when-button-pressed trigger on a save button for an Oracle Forms 6i form, and it has to fulfill a couple of scenarios. Here's some background information: the fields we're primarily concerned with are: n_number, alert_id, end_date For all three scenarios we are comparing candidate records against the following records in the database (for the sake of argument, let's assume they're the only records in the database so far): alert_id|| n_number|| end_date ------------------------------------- 1|| 5|| _______ 2|| 6|| 10/25/2009 Scenario 1: The user enters a new record: alert_id 1 n_number 5 end_date NULL Objective: prevent the user from committing duplicate rows Scenario 2: The user enters a new record: alert_id 1 n_number 10 end_date NULL Objective: Notify the user that this alert_id already exists, but allow the user the ability to commit the row, if desired. Scenario 3: The user enters a new record: alert_id 2 n_number 6 end_date NULL Objective: Notify the user that this alert_id has occurred in the past (i.e. it has a not-null end_date), but allow the user to commit the row, if desired. I've written the code, which seems to comply with the first two scenarios, but prevents me from fulfilling the third. Issues: When I enter the third scenario case, I am prompted to commit the record, but when I attempt this, the "duplicate_stop" alert pops up, preventing me. Issues: I'm getting the following error: ORA-01843: not a valid month. While testing the code for the third scenario in Toad (hard-coding the values, etc) things seemed to be fine. • Three most critical programming concepts

  I know this has probably been asked in one form or fashion but I wanted to pose it once again within the context of my situation (and probably others here @ SO). I made a career change to Software Engineering some time ago without having an undergrad or grad degree in CS. I've supplemented my undergrad and grad studies in business with programming courses (VB, Java,C, C#) but never performed academic coursework in the other related disciplines (algorithms, design patterns, discrete math, etc.)...just mostly self-study. I know there are several of you who have either performed interviews and/or made hiring decisions. Given recent trends in demand, what would you say are the three most essential Comp Sci concepts that a developer should have a solid grasp of outside of language syntax? For example, I've seen blog posts of the "Absolute minimum X that every programmer must know" variety...that's what I'm looking for. Again if it's truly a redundancy please feel free to close; my feelings won't be hurt. (Closest ones I could find were http://stackoverflow.com/questions/164048/basic-programming-algorithmic-concepts- which was geared towards a true beginner, and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/648595/essential-areas-of-knowledge-which I didn't feel was concrete enough). • PHP: Three item validation comparison

  I have 3 featured product panels on the homepage, and I'm writing a CMS page for it. I'm trying to validate the items. They are selected via three <select> elements, featured1, featured2 and featured3. The default is <option value="0" selected>Select an element</option> I need to validate the $_POST to ensure that the user hasn't selected the same product for more than one of the panels. I have worked out that each $_POST needs to be $_POST['featuredN'] > 0 but I can't seem to find a logical way of processing the 7 potential outcomes. Using a logic table, where 1 is a set value. 1 2 3 ------- 0 0 0 1 1 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 1 1 0 0 1 1 If an item is 0, then I will not update it, but I want the user to be able to update a single item if needs be. I cannot find a logical way to see if the item is not 0, and then compare it to another item if that also is not 0. So far my colleague suggested, adding up the values. Which works to see if condition 1 0 0 0 is not met. I have a vague feeling that some form of recursive function might be in order, but I can't quite get my brain to help me on this one! So to the collective brain! :)

• LINQ Sorting - First three need to be different manufacturers

  My OM has a 'product' object. Each product has a 'manufacturer id' (property, integer). When I have a list of products to display, the first three are displayed as the 'featured products'. The list is already sorted in a specific sort order, putting the 'featured' products first in the list. However, I now need to ensure the featured products in the listing are from different Manufacturers. I want to have a method to call to do this re-sorting.   I have the following content types: Camp - the top level type Registration Information - contains node reference to Camp called Camp Medical Release Form - contains node reference to registration information called Camper I would like to create a View that takes the nid for the Camp, and pulls out all the fields for the Registration Info and Medical Release Form. I'm having trouble figuring out how to set up the various arguments/relationships. I haven't done something that's referenced more than two types. I know it would be smart/best to just combine the Registration Info and Medical Release Form, since it's a 1:1 mapping, but we can't. So... any help would be appreciated!

• Solution 6 : Kill a Non-Clustered Process during Two-Node Cluster Failover

  Using Visual Studio 2008 and C#, I developed a windows service A and deployed it to two nodes of a windows server 2008 failover cluster. The service A is part of the failover cluster service, which means, when failover occurs at node1, the cluster service will failover the windows service A from node 1 to node 2. One of the tasks implemented by the windows service A is to start, monitor or kill a process B. The process B is installed to the two nodes but is not part of the failover cluster service. When a failover occurs at node1, the cluster service does not failover the process B from node 1 to node 2, and the process B continues running at node1. The requirement is: When failover occurs at node1, we want the process B running at node1 gets killed, but we do not want the process B be part of the failover cluster service. The first idea that pops up immediately is to put some code in an event handler triggered by the failover in the windows service A. The failover effect to the windows service A is similar to using the task manager to kill the process of the windows service A, but there is no event in windows service that can be triggered by killing the process of the window service. The events related to terminating a windows service are OnStop and OnShutDown, but killing the process of windows service A triggers neither of them. The OnStop event can only be triggered by stopping the windows service using Services Control Manager or Services Management Console. Apparently, the first idea is not feasible. The second idea that emerges is to put code into the OnStart event handler of the windows service A. When failover occurs at node 1, the windows service A is killed at node 1 and started at node 2. During the starting, the windows service A at node 2 kills the process B that is running at node 1. It is a workaround and works very well. The C# code implementation within the OnStart event handler is as following: 1.       Capture server names of the two nodes from App.config 2.       Determine server name of the remote node. 3.       Kill the process B running on the remote node. • Dual monitors: one monitor starts blinking and after a while turns black

  I am using dual monitors in Ubuntu 11 with classical interface (Not Unity). I am using two monitors. The system can detect and automatically configure the monitors correctly. The problem is that after some time, one monitor will start blinking and after a while it will turn black. Does any one know that it is the problem of my hardware or the problem of Ubuntu system?   Right now I'm using Bresenham's line algorithm for line of sight. The problem is I've found an edge case where players can look through walls. Occurs when the player looks between two corners of a wall with a gap on the other side at specific angles. The result I want is for the tile between two walls to be marked invalid as so. What is the fastest way to modify Bresenham's line algorithm to solve this? If there isn't a good solution, is there a better suited algorithm? Any ideas are welcome. Please note the solution should also be capable of supporting 3d.
