• Is my OCZ SSD aligned correctly? (Linux)

  I have an OCZ Agility 2 SSD with 40 GB of space. I use it as a system drive in Debian Linux (Squeeze) and in my opinion it's really fast. But I've read a lot on aligning partitions and file systems... And I'm not sure if I succeeded in aligning the partitions correctly. So I didn't care about the details of partitioning. But now I think maybe the installer didn't align it correctly? Actually, 2048 looks good to me (better than odd values like 63 or something like that) but I've no idea... ;-) Help plz! According to some "SSD Alignment Calculator" I found on the web, the OCZ SSDs have a NAND Erase Block Size of 512kB and their NAND Page Size is 4kB. 2048 is divisible by 4 and 512. So are the partitions aligned correctly?

  I tried to put everything in the title : I'm looking for a software that is able : to work with image (raw file), partition & whole disk, without distinction to copy whole image or only selected part (let's say .. from 0 to end of last partition, excluding free space for example ; or with start + offset/end system) to handle compression (at least gzip) You recognized, I'm looking for a "dd | gzip" utility with GUI on Windows. The closest tool I found so far is http://www.dubaron.com/diskimage/ but it's a bit old and don't have compression support. Any idea ?

• Creating Windows partition in Boot Camp without an install disc

  I have an old Macbook1,1 which has Snow Leopard on it. I'd like to get Win 7 on it by using Boot Camp Assistant, however my superdrive is not working (It just spits out any disc I put in within 10 seconds). I know how to get Win 7 installed by using USB drive, but I still need Boot Camp to create the Windows partition for me. I've made an ISO file of the install disc which I've mounted, but Boot Camp won't pick it up. It seems to only look in the superdrive. How can I get Boot Camp to skip requirement of an install disc? edit: nevermind, as it turns out the partition was already created by the time it asked for the disc!

• Is there a clean way to tell Windows to release a volume?

  Hey guys, I'm trying, under Windows 7, to run a virtual machine with VMWare Player from an OS installed on a physical partition. However, when I boot the virtual machine, VMWare Player says that it couldn't access the physical drive and has to abort there. This seems to be a generally acknowledged problem in the VMWare community, as Windows Vista introduced a compelling new security feature that makes it impossible to write to a raw drive without obtaining exclusive access to it. I have googled the issue and found a few workarounds. However, the clean ones seem to only work on whole physical disks, and not on partitions. So I would be left with the dirty solution. In short, it meddles with the MBR to erase any trace of the partitions to use, makes Windows forget about them, then restores the MBR so we can launch the VM. Is there a way to let VMWare acquire exclusive access to the partition without requiring me to nuke it away?

  I have a TrueCrypt partition. When I insert it in Mac OS X, it always prompt me to initialize the hard disk. Is there a way to prevent Mac OS X from detecting uninitialize hard disk? [UPDATE] By the way, as Truecrypt suggested while I'm in Windows, I must make partitions so the OS won't detect the hard drive as uninitialized. Windows respected that the drive already have contents by the mere fact that it has partitions, while Mac OS X thinks that it is still uninitialized. I think Mac OS X is trying to be smart by detecting if each partition has a valid filesystem id/marker.

  i accidentally deleted the recovery folder on the recovery partition (win vista home) i think it was some sort of scheduled maintenance of some program that i did not configure properly? oops... lol i called toshiba and they said i needed to buy a recovery program, which i didnt bother doing. I bought a legal copy of vista and would like to install the correct files and in a way that when my computer starts looking for files it will eventually find them or i can point to the partition. i'm pretty sure it's not a matter of copy and paste (is it?) thanks Paul

  I have an Asus Eee PC 900HA, and I tried to install Windows 8 on it, so I created a 56GB NTFS partition and booted install from USB When I get to install it, says "some drivers are missing", but when I click Explore button, I can see the NTFS partition. I have updated the BIOS to its lastest version in Asus Support, loaded setup defaults, downloaded all the drivers I saw there and put them into the USB, but keeps asking for drivers. The BIOS has no option for the HDD to be IDE or AHCI, only Auto, ARMD and CDROM are available. Thank you very much.

  I have a LUKS-encrypted root partition that I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 to. I have of course placed /boot on a separate ext2 partition, and my boot loader loads and functions correctly. However, I can't seem to get my initrd to load the LUKS-encrypted root using the appropriate /dev/mapper/ address. What hooks and scripts do I need to add to get this to function correctly, and what is the correct way to regenerate my initrd? I can CHROOT into this install, and everything works fine - but I just can't seem to get it to actually boot. Help!

  I have a virtual machine that recently had its disk image increased from 20GB to 50GB, and fdisk -l verifies that the VM can see this new size. Now I need to resize my root LVM partition to fill the extra 30GB. I've found several articles about resizing LVM, but the few that cover resizing the root partition all claim you need to boot from a LiveCD. Is there any way to do this without taking down the server? The server is critical, so I'd like to minimize downtime.

  I am getting an error while trying to resize System Partition for Windows 2003 Server (this is a VM on a Hyper-v Windows Server 2008) using GParted Live CD ISO. • Windows XP, USB-Stick and multiple Partitions

  Hello. I've got an USB-Stick with multiple Partitions on it (FAT32 (active), FAT32, Ext2 <-- that's another story) and it seems like that my Windows XP can only mount the first partition of the stick. If I try to mount the second one using the volume manager it tells me that I need to make it active and reboot...is it really that limited or am I just missing something here? Partitions: FAT32, System Rescue CD, bootable and active FAT32, some tools ext2, some data (I know that I need extra drivers etc., but that's not asked here. Edit (Solution): Thanks to the answer with the RMB (ReMoveable Bit) I was able to dig up a solution described at this site (Section: On flash drive only the first partition works). Basically, there's an Hitachi Driver available which filters the RMB on Driver-Level, which just needs to be a little modified to function with basically every USB-Stick. All you need to do is adding the "Device Instance ID" to the driver and then use this driver.

I haven't heard of any limits on filesystems, but still i can't even format this drive from Win7 installer. I've found access to command line from win7 installation CD, but i can't find fdisk there to format. Do you have any idea on about how to deal with it?

  My setup is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with 2x 140Gb Hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration. The OS is Windows 2003 Web Edition and disk is partitioned into to two, a 12Gb C: partition and the remainder is the D: drive. Both are very close to full capacity. Ideally I want to replace those drives with 2x 1Tb drives while retaining all data. First of all is this possible without rebuilding the server? If so, will I need any 3rd party software, Symantec Ghost, Partition Master for e.g., to do this? Any general advice as to how to go about doing this?

  Clonezilla is a fine open-source tool, but it requires going through several screens. Since I need to save/restore the same Windows partition, I was wondering if someone knew of a tool (open-source or not) that is easier to use and boots off a USB keydrive. Ideally, it'll save the two commands to save/restore a partition, so I just need to boot the host from the USB key, choose the command, and it'll take care of business.   My laptop has Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.10 installed alongside each other. My laptop has two 225GB hard drives. I give Ubuntu 133.65GB and I give Windows 87.76GB on the same hard drive (C). My problem now is that Windows is almost out of space but Ubuntu is only using a few GB of the 133.65GB that I gave it. I want to reduce Ubuntu's partition size and give that space to increase Windows partition size. Is that any program that can to do this?

One time I removed 'noexec', the other I changed it to 'exec'. After that,each time, I remounted the partition and it still didn't work. I can create files on / so it clearly does have space left. Possibly relevant is that the directory /www is a symbolic link to /home/www, which is on a different partition (/dev/sda3, mounted at /home). Can anyone offer suggestions on what might be going on here? The server appears to be working without issue, but I want to make sure there's not a problem with the partition table, file systems or something else which might result in implosion (or explosion) later.

  I have 4 HDDs in my PC on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3 rev1.0 motherboard on SATA ports 0-3 and running AHCI mode. Windows 7 refuses to let me install to any partitions or disks I select saying Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. I will get to the bottom of this, after I sacrifice my Friday nights and weekends to Microsoft (they don't just want my money, they want my soul). Keep tuned, if no one has the answer, I will find one. I suspect I have to rip out 3 HDDs so that the n00bs at Microsoft can actually deal with spinning media. Really angers me how paid-for-products are so inferior to Linux they don't even qualify to be called "software".

• Change Apache DocumentDirectory path in trueCrypt partition

  Hello, I'm recently moving from windows to linux, so I've setup my machine to dual boot Windows7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I was able to successfully setup Apache on the Ubuntu partition, but I need to move the DocumentRoot since my websites are on a TrueCrypt partition that is in another hard drive so I can have them accessible in both OS. I followed some guides on how to change the path for the DocumentRoot so I end up modifiying the default file at /etc/apache2/sites-available DocumentRoot /media/truecrypt1/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /media/truecrypt1/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> Those are the lines that I've changed, but now when I go to localhost I always get the Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server.   When I install Windows 7 on my hard drive, it makes three partitions. One with the OS itself, one with bootmgr inside (that is 100 MiB), and one with the factory image (all the crapware from HP). My final goal is to have the OS on a partition of 100 GiB and keep the rest (900 GiB) for storage. I thought it would be easy using gparted, but it is taking so long. It will take hours. There must a way to partition the drive before installing Windows. Yeah, because what I think makes the shrinking/moving of the partitions take so long is because they are not empty (am I wrong?).
