  • string or nsstring with string

    - by joels
Lets assume myProp is @property (retain) NSString * myProp and synthesized for us.... self.myProp = @"some value";//string literal? self.myProp = [NSString stringWithString:@"some value"]; Is there a difference here? Is the first one a string literal that doesnt get autoreleased or is it just in memory for it's current scope and I dont have to worry about it?

  • Ruby String accent error: More than meet the eyes

    - by Fabiano PS
I'm having a real trouble to get accents right, and I believe this may happen to most Latin languages, in my case, portuguese I have a string that come as parameter and I must get the first letter and upcase it! That should be trivial in ruby, but here is the catch: s1 = 'alow'; s1.size #=> 4 s2 = 'álow'; s2.size #=> 5 s1[0,1] #=> "a" s2[0,1] #=> "\303" s1[0,1].upcase #=> 'A' s2[0,1].upcase #=> '\303' !!! s1[0,1].upcase + s1[1,100] #=> "Alow" OK s2[0,1].upcase + s2[1,100] #=> "álow" NOT OK I'd like to make it generic, Any help? [EDIT] I found that Rails Strings can be cast to Multibytes as seen in class ../active_support/core_ext/string/multibyte.rb, just using: s2.mb_chars[0,1].upcase.to_s #=> "Á" Still, @nsdk approach is easier to use =)

  • comparison between string literal

    - by wiso
This very simple code: #include <iostream> using namespace std; void exec(char* option) { cout << "option is " << option << endl; if (option == "foo") cout << "option foo"; else if (option == "bar") cout << "opzion bar"; else cout << "???"; cout << endl; } int main() { char opt[] = "foo"; exec(opt); return 0; } generate two warning: comparison with string literal results in unspecified behaviour. Can you explain why exactly this code doesn't work, but if I change char opt[] to char *opt it works, but generates the warning? Is it related to the \0 termination? What is the difference between the two declaration of opt? What if I use const qualifier? The solution is to use std::string?

  • ASP.NET MVC Map String Url To A Route Value Object

    - by mwgriffiths
    I am creating a modular ASP.NET MVC application using areas. In short, I have created a greedy route that captures all routes beginning with {application}/{*catchAll}. Here is the action: // get /application/index public ActionResult Index(string application, object catchAll) { // forward to partial request to return partial view ViewData["partialRequest"] = new PartialRequest(catchAll); // this gets called in the view page and uses a partial request class to return a partial view } Example: The Url "/Application/Accounts/LogOn" will then cause the Index action to pass "/Accounts/LogOn" into the PartialRequest, but as a string value. // partial request constructor public PartialRequest(object routeValues) { RouteValueDictionary = new RouteValueDictionary(routeValues); } In this case, the route value dictionary will not return any values for the routeData, whereas if I specify a route in the Index Action: ViewData["partialRequest"] = new PartialRequest(new { controller = "accounts", action = "logon" }); It works, and the routeData values contains a "controller" key and an "action" key; whereas before, the keys are empty, and therefore the rest of the class wont work. So my question is, how can I convert the "/Accounts/LogOn" in the catchAll to "new { controller = "accounts", action = "logon" }"?? If this is not clear, I will explain more! :) Matt This is the "closest" I have got, but it obviously wont work for complex routes: // split values into array var routeParts = catchAll.ToString().Split(new char[] { '/' }, StringSplitOptions.RemoveEmptyEntries); // feels like a hack catchAll = new { controller = routeParts[0], action = routeParts[1] };

  • SQL select row into a string variable without knowing columns

    - by Brandi
Hello, I am new to writing SQL and would greatly appreciate help on this problem. :) I am trying to select an entire row into a string, preferably separated by a space or a comma. I would like to accomplish this in a generic way, without having to know specifics about the columns in the tables. What I would love to do is this: DECLARE @MyStringVar NVARCHAR(MAX) = '' @MyStringVar = SELECT * FROM MyTable WHERE ID = @ID AS STRING But what I ended up doing was this: DECLARE @MyStringVar = '' DECLARE @SecificField1 INT DECLARE @SpecificField2 NVARCHAR(255) DECLARE @SpecificField3 NVARCHAR(1000) ... SELECT @SpecificField1 = Field1, @SpecificField2 = Field2, @SpecificField3 = Field3 FROM MyTable WHERE ID = @ID SELECT @StringBuilder = @StringBuilder + CONVERT(nvarchar(10), @Field1) + ' ' + @Field2 + ' ' + @Field3 Yuck. :( I have seen some people post stuff about the COALESCE function, but again, I haven't seen anyone use it without specific column names. Also, I was thinking, perhaps there is a way to use the column names dynamically getting them by: SELECT [COLUMN_NAME] FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'MyTable' It really doesn't seem like this should be so complicated. :( What I did works for now, but thanks ahead of time to anyone who can point me to a better solution. :) EDIT: Got it fixed, thanks to everyone who answered. :)

  • Truncating a string while storing it in an array in c

    - by Nick
I am trying to create an array of 20 character strings with a maximum of 17 characters that are obtained from a file named "words.dat". After that the program should truncate the string only showing the first 17 characters and completely ignore the rest of that string. However My question is: I am not quite sure how to accomplish this, can anyone give me some insight on how to accomplish this task? Here is my current code as is: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #define WORDS 20 #define LENGTH 18 char function1(char[WORDS][LENGTH]); int main( void ) { char word_array [WORDS] [LENGTH]; function1(word_array); return ( 0 ) ; } char function1(char word_array[WORDS][LENGTH]) { FILE *wordsfile = fopen("words.dat", "r"); int i = 0; if (wordsfile == NULL) printf("\nwords.dat was not properly opened.\n"); else { for (i = 0; i < WORDS; i++) { fscanf(wordsfile, "%17s", word_array[i]); printf ("%s \n", word_array[i]); } fclose(wordsfile); } return (word_array[WORDS][LENGTH]); } words.dat file: Ninja DragonsFury failninja dragonsrage leagueoflegendssurfgthyjnu white black red green yellow green leagueoflegendssughjkuj dragonsfury Sword sodas tiger snakes Swords Snakes sage Sample output: blahblah@fang:~>a.out Ninja DragonsFury failninja dragonsrage leagueoflegendssu rfgthyjnu white black red green yellow green leagueoflegendssu ghjkuj dragonsfury Sword sodas tiger snakes Swords blahblah@fang:~> What will be accomplished afterwards with this program is: After function1 works properly I will then create a second function name "function2" that will look throughout the array for matching pairs of words that match "EXACTLY" including case . After I will create a third function that displays the 20 character strings from the words.dat file that I previously created and the matching words.

  • PHP: Extract direct sub directory from path string

    - by Nebs
I need to extract the name of the direct sub directory from a full path string. For example, say we have: $str = "dir1/dir2/dir3/dir4/filename.ext"; $dir = "dir1/dir2"; Then the name of the sub-directory in the $str path relative to $dir would be "dir3". Note that $dir never has '/' at the ends. So the function should be: $subdir = getsubdir($str,$dir); echo $subdir; // Outputs "dir3" If $dir="dir1" then the output would be "dir2". If $dir="dir1/dir2/dir3/dir4" then the output would be "" (empty). If $dir="" then the output would be "dir1". Etc.. Currently this is what I have, and it works (as far as I've tested it). I'm just wondering if there's a simpler way since I find I'm using a lot of string functions. Maybe there's some magic regexp to do this in one line? (I'm not too good with regexp unfortunately). function getsubdir($str,$dir) { // Remove the filename $str = dirname($str); // Remove the $dir if(!empty($dir)){ $str = str_replace($dir,"",$str); } // Remove the leading '/' if there is one $si = stripos($str,"/"); if($si == 0){ $str = substr($str,1); } // Remove everything after the subdir (if there is anything) $lastpart = strchr($str,"/"); $str = str_replace($lastpart,"",$str); return $str; } As you can see, it's a little hacky in order to handle some odd cases (no '/' in input, empty input, etc). I hope all that made sense. Any help/suggestions are welcome.

  • If statement String trouble

    - by Jeremy Stone
    I'm trying to create a program which takes user input of two words and determines whether or not these words are the same. import java.util.Scanner; public class L7E3 { public static void main(String[] args) { Scanner keyboard = new Scanner(System. in ); String word1, word2; System.out.println("Please enter a word: "); word1 = keyboard.nextLine(); System.out.println("Please enter a word: "); word2 = keyboard.nextLine(); if (word1 == word2) { System.out.println("The words are " + word1 + " and " + word2 + ". These words are the same."); } else { System.out.println("The words are " + word1 + " and " + word2 + ". These words are not the same."); } } } I figured that word1==word2 would have worked to determine whether the two strings were equal, I'm using JGrasp and it goes directly to my else option regardless of input. Am I doing something wrong with strings?

  • C# Linq to SQL connection string (newbie)

    - by Chris'o
i am a new linq to sql learner and this is my very first attempt to create a data viewer program. The idea is simple, i'd like to create a software that is able to view content of a table in a database. That's it. I got an early problem here already and i have seen many tutes and articles online but I still cant fix the bug. Here is my code: static void Main(string[] args) { string cs = "Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=somedb;Integrated Security=SSPI;"; var db = new DataClasses1DataContext(cs); db.Connection.Open(); foreach (var b in db.Mapping.GetTables()) Console.WriteLine(b.TableName); Console.ReadKey(true); } When I tried to check db.connection.equals(null); it returns false, so i thought i have connected successfully to the database since there is no error at all. But the code above doesn't print anything out to the screen. I kind of lost and don't know what's going on here. Does anyone know what is going wrong here?

  • How to create a String Array and link it to a Grade array

    - by user1861544
I have a project that I need to create 2 Arrays, one to hold Student Names and one to hold Student Scores. The user inputs the size of the array, and the array needs to be sorted using BubbleSort (putting the high scores at the top). I have started the project, created the first array for scores, I have successfully done bubble sort and sorted the grades. Now I can't figure out how to make an array for Names, and once I do how do I make the names array correspond to the Grades array BubbleSort? Here is the code I have so far. import java.util.Scanner; public class Grades { public static void main(String[]args){ { Scanner UserIn = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.print( "How many students are there? " ); int[]GradeArray = new int[UserIn.nextInt()]; for( int i=0 ; i<GradeArray.length ; i++ ) { System.out.print( "Enter Grade for Student " + (i+1) + ": " ); GradeArray[i] = UserIn.nextInt(); } bubbleSort(GradeArray); for( int i : GradeArray ) System.out.println( i ); System.out.println(); } } private static void bubbleSort(int[]GradeArray){ int n = GradeArray.length; int temp = 0; String temp2; for(int i=0; i<n; i++){ for(int j=1; j<(n-i);j++){ if(GradeArray[j-1]<GradeArray[j]){ //swap temp=GradeArray[j-1]; GradeArray[j-1]=GradeArray[j]; GradeArray[j]=temp; } } } } } Also how do I change the grades to Double? I started with Int and when I try to change everything to double I get an error saying "Found Double, expected Int".

  • split a string into a key => value array in php

    - by andy-score
+2-1+18*+7-21+3*-4-5+6x29 The above string is an example of the kind of string I'm trying to split into either a key = value array or something similar. The numbers represent the id of a class and -,+ and x represent the state of the class (minimised, expanded or hidden), the * represents a column break. I can split this into the columns easily using explode which gives and array with 3 $key = $value associations. eg. $column_layout = array( [0] => '+2-1+18' , [1] => '+7-21+3' , [2] => '-4-5+6x29' ) I then need to split this into the various classes from there, keeping the status and id together. eg. $column1 = array( '+' => 2 , '-' => 1 , '+' => 18 ) ... or $column1 = array( array( '+' , 2 ) , array( '-' , 1 ) , array( '+' , 18 ) ) ... I can't quite get my head round this and what the best way to do it is, so any help would be much appreciated.

  • Reasoner Conversion Problems:

I have this code right here in Java and I wanted to translate it in C++, but I had some problems going: this is the java code: import java.io.*; import java.util.*; public class ClueReasoner { private int numPlayers; private int playerNum; private int numCards; private SATSolver solver; private String caseFile = "cf"; private String[] players = {"sc", "mu", "wh", "gr", "pe", "pl"}; private String[] suspects = {"mu", "pl", "gr", "pe", "sc", "wh"}; private String[] weapons = {"kn", "ca", "re", "ro", "pi", "wr"}; private String[] rooms = {"ha", "lo", "di", "ki", "ba", "co", "bi", "li", "st"}; private String[] cards; public ClueReasoner() { numPlayers = players.length; // Initialize card info cards = new String[suspects.length + weapons.length + rooms.length]; int i = 0; for (String card : suspects) cards[i++] = card; for (String card : weapons) cards[i++] = card; for (String card : rooms) cards[i++] = card; numCards = i; // Initialize solver solver = new SATSolver(); addInitialClauses(); } private int getPlayerNum(String player) { if (player.equals(caseFile)) return numPlayers; for (int i = 0; i < numPlayers; i++) if (player.equals(players[i])) return i; System.out.println("Illegal player: " + player); return -1; } private int getCardNum(String card) { for (int i = 0; i < numCards; i++) if (card.equals(cards[i])) return i; System.out.println("Illegal card: " + card); return -1; } private int getPairNum(String player, String card) { return getPairNum(getPlayerNum(player), getCardNum(card)); } private int getPairNum(int playerNum, int cardNum) { return playerNum * numCards + cardNum + 1; } public void addInitialClauses() { // TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS AN EXERCISE // Each card is in at least one place (including case file). for (int c = 0; c < numCards; c++) { int[] clause = new int[numPlayers + 1]; for (int p = 0; p <= numPlayers; p++) clause[p] = getPairNum(p, c); solver.addClause(clause); } // If a card is one place, it cannot be in another place. // At least one card of each category is in the case file. // No two cards in each category can both be in the case file. } public void hand(String player, String[] cards) { playerNum = getPlayerNum(player); // TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS AN EXERCISE } public void suggest(String suggester, String card1, String card2, String card3, String refuter, String cardShown) { // TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS AN EXERCISE } public void accuse(String accuser, String card1, String card2, String card3, boolean isCorrect) { // TO BE IMPLEMENTED AS AN EXERCISE } public int query(String player, String card) { return solver.testLiteral(getPairNum(player, card)); } public String queryString(int returnCode) { if (returnCode == SATSolver.TRUE) return "Y"; else if (returnCode == SATSolver.FALSE) return "n"; else return "-"; } public void printNotepad() { PrintStream out = System.out; for (String player : players) out.print("\t" + player); out.println("\t" + caseFile); for (String card : cards) { out.print(card + "\t"); for (String player : players) out.print(queryString(query(player, card)) + "\t"); out.println(queryString(query(caseFile, card))); } } public static void main(String[] args) { ClueReasoner cr = new ClueReasoner(); String[] myCards = {"wh", "li", "st"}; cr.hand("sc", myCards); cr.suggest("sc", "sc", "ro", "lo", "mu", "sc"); cr.suggest("mu", "pe", "pi", "di", "pe", null); cr.suggest("wh", "mu", "re", "ba", "pe", null); cr.suggest("gr", "wh", "kn", "ba", "pl", null); cr.suggest("pe", "gr", "ca", "di", "wh", null); cr.suggest("pl", "wh", "wr", "st", "sc", "wh"); cr.suggest("sc", "pl", "ro", "co", "mu", "pl"); cr.suggest("mu", "pe", "ro", "ba", "wh", null); cr.suggest("wh", "mu", "ca", "st", "gr", null); cr.suggest("gr", "pe", "kn", "di", "pe", null); cr.suggest("pe", "mu", "pi", "di", "pl", null); cr.suggest("pl", "gr", "kn", "co", "wh", null); cr.suggest("sc", "pe", "kn", "lo", "mu", "lo"); cr.suggest("mu", "pe", "kn", "di", "wh", null); cr.suggest("wh", "pe", "wr", "ha", "gr", null); cr.suggest("gr", "wh", "pi", "co", "pl", null); cr.suggest("pe", "sc", "pi", "ha", "mu", null); cr.suggest("pl", "pe", "pi", "ba", null, null); cr.suggest("sc", "wh", "pi", "ha", "pe", "ha"); cr.suggest("wh", "pe", "pi", "ha", "pe", null); cr.suggest("pe", "pe", "pi", "ha", null, null); cr.suggest("sc", "gr", "pi", "st", "wh", "gr"); cr.suggest("mu", "pe", "pi", "ba", "pl", null); cr.suggest("wh", "pe", "pi", "st", "sc", "st"); cr.suggest("gr", "wh", "pi", "st", "sc", "wh"); cr.suggest("pe", "wh", "pi", "st", "sc", "wh"); cr.suggest("pl", "pe", "pi", "ki", "gr", null); cr.printNotepad(); cr.accuse("sc", "pe", "pi", "bi", true); } } how can I convert this? • Best Practices for serializing/persisting String Object Dictionary entities

    - by Mark Heath
I'm noticing a trend towards using a dictionary of string to object (or sometimes string to string), instead of strongly typed objects. For example, the new Katana project makes heavy use of IDictionary<string, object>. This approach avoids the need to continually update your entity classes/DTOs and the database tables that persist them with new properties. It also avoids the need to create new derived entity types to support new types of entity, since the Dictionary is flexible enough to store any arbitrary properties. Here's a contrived example: class StorageDevice { public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } } class NetworkShare : StorageDevice { public string Path { get; set; } public string LoginName { get; set; } public string Password { get; set; } } class CloudStorage : StorageDevice { public string ServerUri { get; set } public string ContainerName { get; set; } public int PortNumber { get; set; } public Guid ApiKey { get; set; } } versus: class StorageDevice { public IDictionary<string, object> Properties { get; set; } } Basically I'm on the lookout for any talks, books or articles on this approach, so I can pick up on any best practices / difficulties to avoid. Here's my main questions: Does this approach have a name? (only thing I've heard used so far is "self-describing objects") What are the best practices for persisting these dictionaries into a relational database? Especially the challenges of deserializing them successfully with strongly typed languages like C#. Does it change anything if some of the objects in the dictionary are themselves lists of strongly typed entities? Should a second dictionary be used if you want to temporarily store objects that are not to be persisted/serialized across a network, or should you use some kind of namespacing on the keys to indicate this?

  • concatenate string and running index into string within a loop

    - by user331706
To use a given graphic package I need to define, book and fill histogram. How can I get the name of the histogram which is a string to concatenate with 2 integer as a string ( hts_i_j ) in 3 for loop instead. That has to be done in c++ See the exemple below to define TH1F* hts_5_53; TH1F* hts_5_54; …… TH1F* hts_5_69; to book hts_5_53= HDir.make("hts_5_53")," Title", 100,0.,100.); hts_5_54-HDir.make("hts_5_54")," Title", 100,0.,100.); …… hts_16_69-HDir.make("hts_16_69")," Title", 100,0.,100.); to fill hts_5_53-Fill(f) hts_5_54-Fill(f) …… hts_16_69-Fill(f) Instead I would like to define, book and fill in 3 for loops. e.g . for(int i=5, i<17, ++i){ for(int j=53, j<70, ++j){ hts_i_j } } how can I get the string hts to concatenate with the indices ( i,j) in a simple short way while defining, booking and filling in 3 for loop instead

  • How to map a Dictionary<string, string> spanning several tables

    - by Kim Johansson
I have four tables: CREATE TABLE [Languages] ( [Id] INTEGER IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [Code] NVARCHAR(10) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY ([Id]), UNIQUE INDEX ([Code]) ); CREATE TABLE [Words] ( [Id] INTEGER IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY ([Id]) ); CREATE TABLE [WordTranslations] ( [Id] INTEGER IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [Value] NVARCHAR(100) NOT NULL, [Word] INTEGER NOT NULL, [Language] INTEGER NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY ([Id]), FOREIGN KEY ([Word]) REFERENCES [Words] ([Id]), FOREIGN KEY ([Language]) REFERENCES [Languages] ([Id]) ); CREATE TABLE [Categories] ( [Id] INTEGER IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [Word] INTEGER NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY ([Id]), FOREIGN KEY ([Word]) REFERENCES [Words] ([Id]) ); So you get the name of a Category via the Word - WordTranslation - Language relations. Like this: SELECT TOP 1 wt.Value FROM [Categories] AS c LEFT JOIN [WordTranslations] AS wt ON c.Word = wt.Word WHERE wt.Language = ( SELECT TOP 1 l.Id FROM [Languages] WHERE l.[Code] = N'en-US' ) AND c.Id = 1; That would return the en-US translation of the Category with Id = 1. My question is how to map this using the following class: public class Category { public virtual int Id { get; set; } public virtual IDictionary<string, string> Translations { get; set; } } Getting the same as the SQL query above would be: Category category = session.Get<Category>(1); string name = category.Translations["en-US"]; And "name" would now contain the Category's name in en-US. Category is mapped against the Categories table. How would you do this and is it even possible?

  • Attempting to extract a pattern within a string

    - by Brian
I'm attempting to extract a given pattern within a text file, however, the results are not 100% what I want. Here's my code: import java.util.regex.Matcher; import java.util.regex.Pattern; public class ParseText1 { public static void main(String[] args) { String content = "<p>Yada yada yada <code> foo ddd</code>yada yada ...\n" + "more here <2004-08-24> bar<Bob Joe> etc etc\n" + "more here again <2004-09-24> bar<Bob Joe> <Fred Kej> etc etc\n" + "more here again <2004-08-24> bar<Bob Joe><Fred Kej> etc etc\n" + "and still more <2004-08-21><2004-08-21> baz <John Doe> and now <code>the end</code> </p>\n"; Pattern p = Pattern .compile("<[1234567890]{4}-[1234567890]{2}-[1234567890]{2}>.*?<[^%0-9/]*>", Pattern.MULTILINE); Matcher m = p.matcher(content); // print all the matches that we find while (m.find()) { System.out.println(m.group()); } } } The output I'm getting is: <2004-08-24> bar<Bob Joe> <2004-09-24> bar<Bob Joe> <Fred Kej> <2004-08-24> bar<Bob Joe><Fred Kej> <2004-08-21><2004-08-21> baz <John Doe> and now <code> The output I want is: <2004-08-24> bar<Bob Joe> <2004-08-24> bar<Bob Joe> <2004-08-24> bar<Bob Joe> <2004-08-21> baz <John Doe> In short, the sequence of "date", "text (or blank)", and "name" must be extracted. Everything else should be avoided. For example the tag "Fred Kej" did not have any "date" tag before it, therefore, it should be flagged as invalid. Also, as a side question, is there a way to store or track the text snippets that were skipped/rejected as were the valid texts. Thanks, Brian

  • How do validate a string as DateTime using FluentValidation

    - by Richard Nienaber
