I am using RealVNC 4.5 Enterprise on my Windows 7 client. I use this to connect to a remote system which is also running RealVNC 4.5 (on Windows 7 again). And then i logoff the remote system (server) and all of a sudden the realvnc viewer on the client closes with the message : "Read/Select:Connection reset by peer (10054)" It also asks if i want to reconnect again. Any idea why this is happening and how do i resolve this?

Microsoft Word files have weird icons suddenly?

All of a sudden, my Microsoft Office files have the generic file icon, and it happens with Powerpoint and Word, but not Excel. I can open the files just fine, and I tried restarting my computer, creating new files, clicking F5 on the desktop, turning off my Windows XP theme patcher, and none of them worked, any ideas? EDIT: I've also noticed that it happened to the following programs: Windows Live Messenger, iTunes, and Skype, so not just MS Office. Yet, some are still fine like IE, Paint, GIMP, Paint.NET, a few web browsers, etc.

Windows Authentication with IIS7 with public facing website

By default in IIS7, Windows Authentication was turned off and I had to make a configuration change to activate it. When I did that there was a description for Windows Authentication that explained this should only be used for intranet sites, not public facing websites. When you consider NTLM/Kerberos does not use plain text I am not sure why Microsoft have decided this, all of a sudden. Can anybody explain?

Kubuntu - Can't move/max/min windows

All of a sudden it seems when ever I open a window on my Kubuntu (9.10) system, the windows dock in the upper left corner and can't be moved. There is nor border on the windows, no min/max/close buttons in the upper right corner of the windows. I tried opening a term window but it seems I can't type in the window. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Can a faulty battery cause a laptop to crash?

After replacing a blown out motherboard, my Toshiba Satellite C600 is still malfunctioning lately: BSODs. Distorted graphics, and freezes. Sudden shutdowns. After removing the battery and doing a re-format the laptop works perfectly (I should mention the problems continued before removing the battery after the re-format). I haven't seen a fault while solely running on A/C power for two days. Could the problem be a faulty battery?

Apache server randomly stopped working yesterday. How can I fix it?

I use Apache version 2.2.11 through WampServer to host a website. Every time during the last week I tried to connect to localhost it went through and everything was fine. Now all of a sudden I get errors. I didn't change the configuration or anything as far as I know, it just stopped working for no apparent reason. As I said before, it's been working fine. Suddenly get "apt-get: symbol lookup error" when using apt-get

I have no idea what has gone wrong here. I have installed the audiotool sox, then tried to install the library libsox-fmt-all and all of a sudden apt-get refused to work. I cannot use it now, neither to update nor to install anything. Could somebody suggest what i could do to get it back to work? File Locked on Flash Drive

I'm completely frustrated. I'm an owner of a OCZ 8GB Rally2 which I've used flawlessly for about 4 months now, and all of a sudden this week I begin getting errors telling me that I can't delete a file due to "make sure the disk is not write-protected, full or and the file is not in-use" dialog. Here's what I've tried: Deleting the file using FileASSASSIN (it's worked on everything else but files on this darn flash drive) Formatting the flash drive and then restoring the backed up information (I format to NTFS, FYI) Any suggestions on what to do?

Mac internal mic not working with Xlite

I've used xlite for a while now but all of the sudden the internal mic from my mac stopped to work with it. It does call, and you can see the red bar rising but the other person can't hear a thing. Redirecting specific traffic to amazon AWS

My server has recieved sudden increase in the (read) web traffic, requesting many map image tiles, and apache cannot handle it. Apache cannot even handle the redirections! The average load I get in my CentOS machine is more then 200.. Is there some software out there that can redirect SOME of the traffic, such as only the traffic from specific directory (such as http://example.com/maptiles/abc.png) to a different address (sucha as http://s3.amazonaws.com/mytiles/abc.png) ? can this be done by HAProxy?

Ping issues with Windows Server 2008 R2 with mail server!

For some reason I can ping all servers in my network except for the mail server and the mail server can ping all servers except the windows server 2008 R2. The firewall has been disabled and still it doesn't respond. The weird part is that every once in a while it will all of a sudden start allowing pings and then just as suddenly stop allowing pings. I've made sure there's no type-o's in the ip address or subnet mask or gateway. Any other ideas?

We have two websites configured in IIS 6 pointing to two different static IPs for the past couple days website A's IP address began to resolving to website B's ip address. It seemed to happen all of a sudden. When we looked at IIS the IPs looked to be configured correctly but when we would ping the websites both would point to website B's IP. Any ideas?

Incorrect units in iotop output

iotop is behaving strangely on a opensuse 11.2 server. It all of a sudden started reporting the output in the wrong units. Kilobytes per second are now Terabytes a second, Gigabytes now Petabytes. This server is also having stability issues, so I'm curious as to if the system is reporting things wrong to iotop is related to other issues. Any one else see similar behaviour?

Good day, I would just like to know if you guys have any idea what could be the possible cause for a sudden disconnection of clients and 100% cpu utilization in our amazon server. This problem just started 2 days ago and in both occasion it happened at 7 plus in the morning gmt+8. What we usually do is just reset the socket for it to normalize and then on the next day same thing happened at 7 in the morning every client is disconnected from the server.

Identify the tables to be ignored during replication per database for example log tables 3. Carefully identify and replace the variables and paths(locations) mentioned (in bold) in the commands given below with appropriate values 4. Schedule the maintenance activity in odd hours as these activities will affect all the databases on Master database server Implementation steps for DB Replication: 1. Configure the /etc/my.cnf file on Master database server to enable Binary logging, setting of server id and configuring of dbnames for which logging should be done. [mysqld] log-bin=mysql-bin server-id=1 binlog-do-db = dbname Note: You can specify multiple DB in binlog-do-db by using comma separated dbname values like: dbname1, dbname2, …, dbnameN 2. On Master database, Grant Replication Slave Privileges, by executing following command on mysql prompt mysql> GRANT REPLICATION SLAVE ON *.* TO slaveuser@<hostname> identified by ‘slavepassword’; 3. Stop the Master & Slave database by giving the command mysqladmin shutdown 4. Start the Master database by giving the command /usr/local/mysql-5.0.22/bin/mysqld_safe --user=user& 5. mysql> FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK; Note: Leave the client (putty session) from which you issued the FLUSH TABLES statement running, so that the read lock remains in effect. Start the Slave Mysql Server with 'replicate-do-db=DB name' option. /usr/local/mysql-5.0.22/bin/mysqld_safe --user=user --replicate-do-db=dbname --skip-slave 15. Configure the settings at Slave server for Master host name, log filename and position within the log file as shown in Step 6 above Use Change Master statement in the MySQL session mysql> CHANGE MASTER TO MASTER_HOST='<master_host_name>', MASTER_USER='<replication_user_name>', MASTER_PASSWORD='<replication_password>', MASTER_LOG_FILE='<recorded_log_file_name>', MASTER_LOG_POS=<recorded_log_position>; 16. Why Is Hibernation Still Used?

With the increased prevalence of fast solid-state hard drives, why do we still have system hibernation? Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader Moses wants to know why he should use hibernate on a desktop machine: I’ve never quite understood the original purpose of the Hibernation power state in Windows. I understand how it works, what processes take place, and what happens when you boot back up from Hibernate, but I’ve never truly understood why it’s used. With today’s technology, most notably with SSDs, RAM and CPUs becoming faster and faster, a cold boot on a clean/efficient Windows installation can be pretty fast (for some people, mere seconds from pushing the power button). Standby is even faster, sometimes instantaneous. Even SATA drives from 5-6 years ago can accomplish these fast boot times. Hibernation seems pointless to me [on desktop computers] when modern technology is considered, but perhaps there are applications that I’m not considering. What was the original purpose behind hibernation, and why do people still use it? Quite a few people use hibernate, so what is Moses missing in the big picture? The Answer SuperUser contributor Vignesh4304 writes: Normally hibernate mode saves your computer’s memory, this includes for example open documents and running applications, to your hard disk and shuts down the computer, it uses zero power. Once the computer is powered back on, it will resume everything where you left off. You can use this mode if you won’t be using the laptop/desktop for an extended period of time, and you don’t want to close your documents. Simple Usage And Purpose: Save electric power and resuming of documents. In simple terms this comment serves nice e.g (i.e. you will sleep but your memories are still present). Why it’s used: Let me describe one sample scenario. Imagine your battery is low on power in your laptop, and you are working on important projects on your machine. You can switch to hibernate mode – it will result your documents being saved, and when you power on, the actual state of application gets restored. Its main usage is like an emergency shutdown with an auto-resume of your documents. MagicAndre1981 highlights the reason we use hibernate everyday: Because it saves the status of all running programs. I leave all my programs open and can resume working the next day very easily. Doing a real boot would require to start all programs again, load all the same files into those programs, get to the same place that I was at before, and put all my windows in exactly the same place. Hibernating saves a lot of work pulling these things back up again. It’s not unusual to find computers around the office here that have been hibernated day in and day out for months without an actual full system shutdown and restart. It’s enormously convenient to freeze your work space at the exact moment you stopped working and to turn right around and resume there the next morning. Have something to add to the explanation?
