• System Center Essentials server running out of disk space due to stored old updates

  We have a System Center Essentials (SCE) server to filter updates to our laptops. We've configured it to download the update, and then the laptops get the update from this server; this of course reduces our internet bandwidth and the time it takes for employees to receive the updates, which reduces the complaints we get about how long updates take. However we currently have a total of 2,255 updates stored on the server. SCE gives a breakdown: Updates with installation errors: 29 Updates needed by computers: 280 Updates installed/up-to-date: 0 Updates with no status: 1946 Our little server has 68gb of hard disk space, and the updates are currently taking 32gb and counting. Some of the updates date back to 2003, but we can't figure out a way to delete them to free up space on the server. Right-clicking an update and clicking Uninstall threatens to remove the update from all computers, which is not what we want. Some of the updates even inform us upon viewing: This update has been replaced by a newer update. Before declining this update, it is recommended that you approve the new update first and verify that this update is no longer needed by any computers. How do you prevent your SCE server from filling its hard drive space? Is there a way to configure the server to only keep updates that are still needed? Furthermore, why (in the above breakdown of updates) are there so many updates with "no status" and 0 updates that are "installed/up-to-date"?

• How to make a huge ram drive?

  At my old job when a report was needed I could sit down with someone and pull up results and get immediate feedback, and then refine my queries and ultimately have the data we needed, in the format we needed within 30-90 minutes. I just started working for a new company with a database containing millions of records and I spent my whole 8 hours making a report that I feel I could have made in less than 2 hours if it were not for the massive amount of data the queries are working with, and the fact that I couldn't ask the person needing the data to sit down with me and give me feedback as I pulled up results as I am used to. So I am trying to think of how we can make the server faster... much faster, so that I can have the same level of productivity I'm used to. One thought that just came to mind is that memory is so cheap these days, and by my calculations I could buy 10 8gig ram sticks for 1000 bucks. What I have never heard of though is a device that would let me combine these into a huge ram drive. So I'd like to know if any such device exists, and if not what is the largest ram drive I could realistically make and how would I go about doing so? EDIT: To you guys who are saying the database shema needs to be analyzed... you can't make a query such as "Select f1, f2, f3, etc from SomeTable" run any faster by normalizing or indexing the table. What I'm talking about IS ABSOLUTELY a need for improved performance at the hardware level. I am used to having results come back to me in a few seconds, not a few minutes or much less a half an hour. Maybe that's what you guys are used to who have 100 billion record tables and you feel like that's fast, but I'm looking for results back from tables with about 10 million records to come back to me withing less than half a minute TOPS.

• Missing libcurl.so.3 on updating tp PHP 5.2.13

  Hi, I am trying to update my PHP to 5.2.13 however when I tried running yum update, it gives me this dependency error. php-5.2.13-jason.1.i386 from utterramblings has depsolving problems --> Missing Dependency: libcurl.so.3 is needed by package php-5.2.13-jason.1.i386 (utterramblings) Error: Missing Dependency: libcurl.so.3 is needed by package php-cli-5.2.13-jason.1.i386 (utterramblings) Error: Missing Dependency: libcurl.so.3 is needed by package php-5.2.13-jason.1.i386 (utterramblings) I believe this problem has been caused by my updating libcurl some time ago (to version 7.16.4-8.el5) but I have no idea how to solve this dependency issue. Some time ago my friend asked me regarding missing libcurl.so.3 as well on running some script. Can't say I remember what but he did say he managed to solved it (at least on his end) so I paid no attention to the libcurl.so.3 issue anymore. But now when I try to update my PHP, this problem arises again. This however does indeed exist (and presumably what solved my friend's issue): /usr/lib/libcurl.so.3 Any thoughts on this matter? I'm using centOS 5.3, PHP 5.2.11 and on LightTPD. -Regards

• Updating Samba From RPMs

  My Red Hat Enterprise Edition 4 comes with Samba Version 3.0.10, which does not have support for the "inherit owner" attribute that is essential in implementing a Deny-Delete Write Once Read Many share (for examples, search google for a-shared-drop-box-using-samba). (BTW, if any body knows an alternative way to do it without updating samba, I'm all ears!) I am not all that comfortable building from source, and after hours of googling (no, I do not have a red hat subscription, so I cannot just run the up2date command), I found a whole bunch of rpms on http://ftp.sernet.de/pub/samba/tested/rhel/4/i386/ (Samba 3.2.15 for RHEL 4)... Next, I tried updating them with the rpm -U --nodeps command, but I got file conflict errors. So I went ahead and overwrote everything (or so I thought) by using the rpm's --force option. But no good has come of all that. /usr/sbin/smbd -V still returns the old version. As of now, rpm -qa | grep samba returns, samba3-client-3.2.15-40.el4 samba-3.0.10-1.4E.2 samba-client-3.0.10-1.4E.2 system-config-samba-1.2.21-1 samba3-3.2.15-40.el4 samba-common-3.0.10-1.4E.2 samba3-winbind-3.2.15-40.el4 I cannot remove the older ones because samba-common >= 3.0.8-0.pre1.3 is needed by (installed) gnome-vfs2-smb-2.8.2-8.2.x86_64 libsmbclient.so.0()(64bit) is needed by (installed) kdebase-3.3.1-5.8.x86_64 libsmbclient.so.0()(64bit) is needed by (installed) gnome-vfs2-smb-2.8.2-8.2.x86_64 Now thats a whole bunch of dependencies that I dare not touch :) Any and all pointer are welcome at this stage. I need to be able to repeat a single item if I get a problem (e.g when folding the letter). What problems am I likely to have? Is Word 2007 up to this sort of mail merging, or should I be looking at a report writing tool? How do I restart a print run after a printer jam etc? What format should I store the “records” and there images in? E.g Can standard software cope with images that are stored in separate files named after the “CustomerId” that is in the “record” (I can write custom software if needed, but would rather use standard “of-the-shelf” software for the printing, I am planning on custom software for the data creation, so can output in whatever format is needed)

• Jabber client for windows 7

  I am looking for a jabber client with some specific functions. I have spent 1½ day looking for one and it is getting tiresome. Clients that I have been using, that have what I need, but I am not interesting for a reason in are: Pidgin, does not show complete messages in their popups. Miranda IM, I have a constant disconnect issue that does not seem to be resolved in my case. What I need are: Popups A popup that shows broadcasts to users. A popup that show when my username is typed in a conference chat. I need to be able to view the full message in the popup. No configuration of a theme to make this enabled, or if there is a working theme for it already. Preferable placement is on the top right of the screen. Able to 'popup' when running full screen applications, much like games. Conferences Easy access to bookmarked conferences. I do not want to go through submenus to rejoin a disconnected or closed conference. If I close the conference window I want to be connected to the conference until I exit the client. Tabbed interface. Configuration Sober configurations, options are great but there is a limit and the above needs to be availble in the options in a understandable manner. What I wish for: MSN Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Facebook Not needed! If it is avaible then it is a big plus. Conferences/chats Not needed! Eyecandy is always nice.

  I would like to use ErlyBird, so I downloaded the latest Netbeans (6.8), and then downloaded and unzipped ErlyBird. After that I imported the plugins in Netbeans, but during installation I was prompted with: Warning - could not install some modules: Erlang Project - The module named org.netbeans.modules.parsing.api was needed and not found. Erlang Editor - The module named org.netbeans.modules.parsing.api was needed and not found. Another module could not be installed due to the above problems. Is there a workaround to this?

• Maven best practice for generating multiple jars with different/filtered classes ?

  I developed a Java utility library (similarly to Apache Commons) that I use in various projects. Additionally to fat clients I also use it for mobile clients (PDA with J9 Foundation profile). In time the library that started as a single project spread over multiple packages. As a result I end up with a lot of functionality but not really needed in all the projects. Since this library is also used inside some mobile/PDA projects I need a way to collect just the used classes and generate the actual specialized jars Currently in the projects that area using this library, I have Ant jar tasks that generate (from the utility project) the specialized jar files (ex: my-util-1.0-pda.jar, my-util-1.0-rcp.jar) using include/exclude jar task features. This is mostly needed due to the generated jar size constraints for the mobile projects. Migrating now to Maven I just wonder if there are any best practices to arrive to something similar so I consider the following scenarios: [1] - additionally to the main jar artifact (my-lib-1.0.jar) also generating inside my-lib project the separate/specialized artifacts using classifiers (ex: my-lib-1.0-pda.jar) using Maven Jar Plugin or Maven Assembly Plugin filtering/includes ... I'm not very comfortable with this approach since it pollute the library with library consumers demands (filters) [2] - Create additional Maven projects for all the specialized clients/projects, that will "wrap" the "my-lib" and generate the filtered jar artifacts (ex: my-lib-wrapper-pda-1.0 ...etc). As a result, these wrapper projects will include the filtering (to generate the filtered artifact) and will depend just on the "my-lib" project and the client projects will depend on my-lib-wrapper-xxx-1.0 instead of my-lib-1.0. This approach my look problematic since even that will let "my-lib" project intact (with no additional classifiers & artifacts), basically will double the number of projects since for every client project I'll have one just to collect the needed classes from the "my-util" library ("my-pda-app" project will need a "my-lib-wrapper-for-my-pda-app" project/dependency) [3] - Into the every client project that use the library (ex: my-pda-app) add some specialized Maven plugins to trim - out (when generating the final artifact/package) the un-needed classes (ex: maven-assembly-plugin, maven-jar-plugin, proguard-maven-plugin) What is the best practice for solving this kind of problems in the "Maven way" ?!

A parser generator (which actually doesn't have to be that complete or efficient) is thus needed. http://antlr.org/ is a nice parser generator that already has a number of grammars for popular languages.   I use a large (millions) entries hashmap to cache values needed by an algorithm, the key is a combination of two objects as a long. Since it grows continuously (because keys in the map changes, so old ones are not needed anymore) it would be nice to be able to force wiping all the data contained in it and start again during the execution, is there a way to do effectively in Java? I mean release the associated memory (about 1-1.5gb of hashmap) and restart from the empty hashmap..
