When running under Windows XP - the default font size of ListView's rows is too small and rows of the ListView don't change color when user hovers with a mouse over them. How to do so that ListView appearance under Windows XP is the same as under Vista?

    This question is a cross between a developer and a server setup question. I asked on Serverfault but no answer yet. As a developer, I need to setup a test to see how MSMQ works between two machines, and I'm unclear what to do. I will use C# or BizTalk to do the read/write to/from the queues. I have MSMQ installed on two Windows XP computers. Can I configure them to pass messages back and forth, or do I need an MSMQ server in the middle? If I need an MSMQ server, does the normal MSMQ with Win2003 able to act as that? And then, how do I connect my Windows XP to that Windows 2003 server? Is it a) On screen admin dialog in the MSMQ plug-in to MMC, b) a config file, c) Active Directory, d) something else? Thanks, Neal Walters

  • Windows XP Home Edition SP3 cant recognise PCMIA SD Card

    System Specifications: Laptop : Dell Inspiron 6000 OS: Windows Home Edition SP3 SD Adapter: Hagiwara Smart Media Adapter I inserted the card into the slot, windows xp recognises the device, lists the pcmia controller on the device manager list, an entry appears under the IDE ATA/ATAPI category on the device manager as well. However, the device does not show under my computer and the driver does not get assigned a letter number. I checked the system logs from the device manager and there were no logged errors. Checking the Hagiwara support website, the manufacturer indicates that the adapter driver is the same as the windows xp pcmia controller. Checking Dell's website, no specific drivers were listed for that either. General Search on the web indicates that multiple people face similar problems with their SD cards, yet none actually spell out the route issue that causes this. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for further debugging. Thanks in advance

    I'm running Windows 7 and Visual Studio 2008 Pro and trying to get my application to work on Windows XP SP3. It's a really minimal command line program so should have any ridiculous dependencies: // XPBuild.cpp : Defines the entry point for the console application. // #include "stdafx.h" int _tmain(int argc, _TCHAR* argv[]) { printf("Hello world"); getchar(); return 0; } I read somewhere that defining several constants such as WINVER should allow me to compile for other platforms. I've tried the added the following to my /D compiler options: ;WINVER=0x0501;_WIN32_WINNT 0x0501;NTDDI_VERSION=NTDDI_WINXP But that made no difference. When I run it on my Windows XP machine (actually running in a virtualbox) I get the following error: This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. So what have I missed? Is there something else required to run MSVC compiled programs or a different compiler option or something else?

    Is there a way to create an installable (ideally XCopy installable) version of an ASP.NET MVC application that will run in a standalone fashion on a Windows XP machine? I don't mind installing SQL Server Express for this purpose, so I guess the question boils down to this: Can the Cassini web server that comes with Visual Studio 2008 be bundled with the application? Or are there other options? NOTE: The installation is for demo purposes only, so there are no licensing problems. Also, I am suggesting Cassini because I don't know of a way to install IIS7 on Windows XP. I can't do major hackage on the registry to get this to work.

    I want to differrntiate between Windows XP and Windows 7 in a XML file. Thought i will use an environment variable for it inside the XML. However I could not find any system environment variable defined in windows that gives this information. I see the %OSTYPE% variable but it is only available in Windows 7. It is not defined in XP. Is there anyway i could do this? Note that i would like a solution which purely depends on system environment variables. I do not want to create new variables based on executing some command, because i want to use this variable in a XML file.

  • system() call returns "Permission Denied" on Windows XP

    I am experiencing a problem with a C program running on Windows XP that is getting Permission Denied (EACCES) errors when it tries to call system(). It doesn't seem to matter what I put in the command string, the commands all work manually but get Permission Denied errors when executed via system() The other interesting thing is that the program works correctly on other XP machines, just not this one. That makes it feel like some kind of OS setting, but I am not totally sure what system() does under the hood and would like to understand what is happening here. Thanks.

    I need to script a way to install IPV4 on windows xp the reason is i have many pc with a corrupt win sock registry so the fix Microsoft has is to delete the reg keys hklm/system/currentcontolset/services/winsock and winsock2 and then to run a netsch ip reset which creates the winsock2 part of the registry then the part i need to script is go to network adapter properties goto tcpip and install a new protocol and select tcp/ip and install it which uses the file c:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf and then this creates the winsock part is there a way to script this part?? i have looked and cant find anything

  • Word 97 installed with Outlook XP - Cannot use Word for default editor from Windows Explorer.

    I am using Outlook 2002 (Office XP Update) with Word 97 and Excel 97. (The reason is that Microsoft refused to activate my legit copy of office 2003 when I got a new motherboard, Word XP crashed too much, and I prefer the newer Outlook. I would rather not send Microsoft more money to upgrade since they refuse to activate what I've already purchased. Please don't recommend an upgrade.) Now, I can tell Windows Explorer to use Word 97 to open, for example, a .txt file. But whenever I try to open the text file from Explorer, it either (a) started the Windows XP installer, or (b) tells me that the .txt file is an invalid Win32 application. Is there some way to straighten out the registry without reinstalling Windows XP? Excel 97 and Outlook 2002 are working fine.

    I have a server that runs vsftpd to handle ftp connections. One of my users have a notebook with Total Commander and WinSCP installed. Both ftp clients fail right after the connection is established to the server and it tries to download the directory listing without any particular error message. The weird thing is: the notebook works perfectly ok with other ftp servers. My ftp server also works well with other clients. In fact, this user also has a pc running on the same LAN as the notebook and the pc works well with the ftp server. We use active ftp connection mode. Passive mode works well but is not an option at this point. I would post more technical details but I don't even know what this problem is related to. Anyway, below is the server side tcpdump for the failed connection attempt. There's no further communication between the client and the server after the last line of log.   • Will Windows XP work on a Hybrid Hard Drive?

    I'm looking into getting the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid hard drive, and I'm planning on dual booting between Windows 7 and Windows XP. I know 7 and Vista have native support for taking advantage of the SSD portion of a hybrid drive, and I assume XP does not have any such support, but will XP still work on the drive? I would think it will, but I wanted to be sure, and the Googles are coming up empty for me on this one. Thanks!

I am using an external dvd drive and a Win XP Pro disc. I boot from the dvd drive and during the install get this error: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.   • CUPS printer on Vritual Machine can be access via CUPS admin, but not by XP?

    I have a Zebra label printer connected to a Linux Mint virtual machine. It was set up with CUPS and a Windows XP computer can then print to it via http://192.168.1.76:632/printers/labelprinter. That was all fine and dandy I then hooked up a Fargo Pro L PVC card printer to a Windows XP virtual machine. I had to disconnect the label printer as the server that hosted both virtual machines only has 1 parallel port. Now I plugged in the Zebra again, and it cannot print from the Windows XP computer anymore. If I go to the CUPS admin panel on the Windows XP computer, I can see it, everything looks fine, and I can send it a test page to print which works. If I try to print from Windows, I get an error that the printer is not found/cannot connect to the server. The only other thing that changed was the firewall on the router to allow remote desktop to another computer from outside the network, but all the firewall stuff was for external use. Nothing affected the IP address of the internal network. The Linux Mint VM also had a PDF pritner that was shared with CUPS. That printer is also down. I tried setting up a new CUPS installation on another VM, and when I go to share it with XP, I get the same error. I don't know what to try. It has access, it can get to the admin from that computer, it seems to be up and ready, but when Windows tries to connect, the printer isn't found even though 4 days ago everything was fine. Any ideas?

All three of my browsers, IE 7, Chrome and Firefox are having the same problems. Pages are not being loaded and are hanging on “waiting for …”. The browsers are waiting for the page being loaded or ad servers. Sometimes a page will load but the loading graphic continues to be displayed as if the page were still loading when the page appears to be fully loaded. The problem is bad enough that I can’t really use any of my browsers. I can eventually get most pages to load by stopping and restarting the page load. I have DSL modem with a wireless router and I have been able to eliminate the modem and router from being the source of my problem. My laptop doesn’t have any problems even when hardwired to the router and with the wireless connection disabled. I deleted the NIC and let XP re-install. Also tried a different network cable. Tried the same router port used in the laptop test. One clue that may be important is that I can’t connect to my router using the desktop machine…the page hangs while trying to connect. I can ping the router and I can quickly connect to the router using the laptop. I also can’t use the Windows update process – the page never fully loads. The problem affects other user accounts and even happens in safe mode. I am convinced the problem is with part of the O/S…some layer able to affect all of the browsers. The purpose of this post is to see if anyone has some ideas before I do a XP repair. I have done quite a bit of trouble-shooting: Ran a full anti-virus scan with AVG – no problems. Ran full scans with Spybot, MalwareBytes and Sophos anti-rootkit – no problems. Ran Chkdsk with both options checked. Ran Disk Clean up Defragged RE-installed IE7 Cleared all the browser caches Ran Ccleaner (registry tool) Ran HijackThis – nothing unusual (problem happens in safe mode too) Ran Process Explorer – no unusual processes Used System Restore and fell back several days – no change in the problem Booted to last known good configuration – no change in the problem Ran MicrosoftFixit50199.msi – no change in the problem Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated…I’m not looking forward to doing a repair on XP.     Hi all, I just got Windows XP Mode on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit machine. I notice that the Windows XP Security Center notes that I don't have any virus protection. However, I'm running AVG Free on Windows 7. Do I need to have some sort of anti-virus program installed on Windows XP Mode? Thanks in advance.

  • How come Win+R prompt can open Python when it's not in my path?

    When I use the run prompt in Windows XP Professional (Win+R), and type python.exe or python, it works and greets me with the python prompt. However, when I start a cmd window, and then type python.exe or python, it doesn't find it. This is what I expect, as the Python directory (for me, I:\Python31\) is not in my PATH. How come, then, that if I type python.exe in the Win+R prompt, it works? Edit: here is a partial output of SET, I removed most irrelevant entries, I'm not sure why is it useful, apart from the PATH variable which I already said doesn't include the Python directory. If you need a particular variable other than these, please ask.
