• Don't miss Virtual Developer Day - All about ADF next week

• Electricsheep Not Working in Raring 13.04

  I just downloaded Electricsheep four days before I updated my Ubuntu software and I fell in love with it. After I upgraded to 13.04, I'm kind of upset in saying that Electricsheep no longer works. I have no idea how to fix it and I feel helpless with Linux. As I said, it was working completely fine in 12.10, but now with the Raring Ringtail update: I use Xscreensaver to launch Electricsheep. When I open Xscreensaver, "Electricsheep" is one of the options to choose. When I "preview" ES or even launch the "xscreensaver-demo" in the terminal, it doesn't work anymore; I get an error message. The error message says: "detected another electric sheep process. rendering of sheep is disabled using read only access." Damnit, can someone please help me? I want my trippy screensaver back, it shouldn't be this hard! EDIT: I contacted the creator of Electricsheep (Scott Draves) via the link to his email address on his personal website and asked for his assistance. Hopefully the Askubuntu community will be able to fix this problem, I'm sure I am not the only one who is having this problem as I have searched and searched.

• Thunderbird keeps crashing Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit

  I have been using Thunderbird for years under different versions of Ubuntu, including 12.04 since its release. From a couple of days it keeps crashing after a few seconds after start. I tried to reinstall it creating a new profile and copying the old mail, file by file. After one day of normal functioning it started again to crash. Mozilla is receiving the crash reports. • How do you keep SOA DRY?

  In our organization, we've shifted to a more "service oriented architecture". To give an example, let's assume we need to retrieve a "Quote" object. This quote has a shipper, a consignee, phone numbers, contacts, email addresses, and other location information. In other words, a Quote object is made up of many other objects. So, it seems like it would make sense to make a "Quote Retrieval Service". In our situation, we've accomplished this by creating a .NET solution and writing the service. The service API looks something like this (in pseudo-code): Function GetQuote(String ID) Returns Quote So, so far so good. Now, when this service is consumed, to keep things "de-coupled", we are creating essentially a duplicate of the Quote object and mapping from the QuoteService version of the Quote into the consumer's version of the Quote. In many cases, these classes will have the exact same properties. So, if the Quote service is consumed by 5 other applications, we would have 6 definitions of what a "Quote" is. One for each consumer, and one for the service. This feels wrong. I thought code was supposed to be DRY, but it seems like our method of SOA is forcing us to create tons of duplicated class definitions. What are we doing wrong, or is the code duplication just a "necessary evil" of SOA?

[Website] => [Zip] => [Rating Star] => 0 [Rating Weight] => 0 [Latitude] => 35.7865334803033 [Longitude] => 139.716800710514 [Building] => [City] => Unknown_Japan [OpeningHour] => [TimeStamp] => 0000-00-00 00:00:00 [CountViews] => 0 Then I do something like this: $output[$info['ID']]=$info; //mess up here $tes=$info['ID']['Title']; Well guess what it messes up. Basically even though the content of an array in PhP can be Japanese. Is this true? What's wrong. The error I got is: Debug Warning: /sdfdsfdf/api/test2.php line 36 - Cannot find element ????????-???????????__35.79_139.72 in variable Debug Warning: /sdfdsfdf/api/test2.php line 36 - main() [function.main]: It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are required to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected 'Asia/Krasnoyarsk' for '7.0/no DST' instead So many question mark Why is this happening. What's really going on inside PhP? Where can I learn more of such things. Most importantly, what would be the best way to handle this situation. Should I tell PhP to internally always use UTF-8? Does PhP array inherenty cannot use non ascii id?

• What's new at Oracle in Gamification?

  It's been a crazy few weeks in Apps UX.  We are actively working on some gamification designs in now 4 different application product areas, as well as supporting some teams in other areas of Oracle.  Since that gets to be a pretty diverse group with a lot of resources and ideas, we've started a group in the Oracle Social Network on Gamification at Oracle.  That's limited to internal users at Oracle, but if you are interested in joining,  ping me directly for more information at [email protected]. We're planning another design jam like we did here at Oracle in May and at the Enterprise Gamification Forum in San Diego in September.  This time, we're taking the show to the UK, and hosting it with a group of customers on the Oracle Usability Advisory Board.  It should be a great event!   We're also actively designing some gamified flows which we'll be testing with users at the UKOUG to see what our customers think about some of our gamification ideas. We're looking at more feedback opportunities.  Internally, we surveyed 444 folks within Oracle about gamification and we'll be posting some of our findings on that here soon.  I'll be posting a blog on gamification for our customers at useableapps.oracle.com  in the next few weeks and I'll cross-post to here when it comes out.  So even though it's been quiet on this blog, we are busy and I'm hoping to push out more content in the next few weeks!  Would love to know what's most interesting to the folks reading so if there's something you especially want to see, feel free to comment or email me about it.

• Naming a class that processes orders

  I'm in the midst of refactoring a project. I've recently read Clean Code, and want to heed some of the advice within, with particular interest in Single Responsibility Principle (SRP). Currently, there's a class called OrderProcessor in the context of a manufacturing product order system. This class is currently performs the following routine every n minutes: check database for newly submitted + unprocessed orders (via a Data Layer class already, phew!) gather all the details of the orders mark them as in-process iterate through each to: perform some integrity checking call a web service on a 3rd party system to place the order check status return value of the web service for success/fail email somebody if web service returns fail constantly log to a text file on each operation or possible fail point I've started by breaking out this class into new classes like: OrderService - poor name. This is the one that wakes up every n minutes OrderGatherer - calls the DL to get the order from the database OrderIterator (? seems too forced or poorly named) - OrderPlacer - calls web service to place the order EmailSender Logger I'm struggling to find good names for each class, and implementing SRP in a reasonable way. How could this class be separated into new class with discrete responsibilities?

• Best Usage of Multiple Computers For a Developer

  I have two Macbook Pros - both are comparable in hardware. One is a 17" and the other a 15". The 17" has a slightly swifter CPU clock speed, but beyond that the differences are completely negligible. I tried a setup a while back where I had the 17" hooked up to an external monitor in the middle of my desk with the 15" laptop immediately to the right of it, and was using teleport to control the 15" from my 17". All development, terminal usage, etc. etc. was being done on the 17" and the 15" was primarily used for email / IM / IRC... or anything secondary to what I was working on. I have a MobileMe account so preferences were synced, but otherwise I didn't really use anything else to keep the computers in sync (I use dropbox/git but probably not optimally). For reasons I can't put my finger on, this setup never felt quite right. A few things that irked me was the 15" was way under-utlized and the 17" was overutilized having 2 laptops and a 21" monitor all on one desk actually took up lots of desk space and it felt like I had too much to look at. I reverted back to just using the 17" and the external monitor and keeping the 15" around the house (and using it very sparingly). For those of you who are using multiple laptops (or just multiple machines for that matter), I'd like to see setups that work for you for when you have 2 or more machines that gives you optimal productivity and why. I'd like to give this one more shot but with a different approach than my previous - which was using the 15" as a machine for secondary things (communication, reading documentation, etc. etc).

• Outlook macro runs through 250 iterations before failing with error [migrated]

  Description: I have an Outlook macro that loops through selected emails in a folder and writes down some info to a .csv file. It works perfectly up until 250 before failing. • My Windows Phone 7 experience: 45 days in

  November 13th, 2010 was the day I got my Windows Phone 7.  It was an exciting day, a lot of anxiety too.  Over a phone? Sadly, yes! Being a Zune Pass subscriber, it was something worth looking forward too, being a consultant that relies and works with Microsoft technologies and having the option of OneNote (without converters and such) on my phone was a great thing too. Has that changed over 45 days?  No, not really.  But I find myself at the very same place I was with my iPhone, I don’t really use the music player as I spend enough time in front of a computer where I have Pandora and the Zune Desktop.  Or in a car with Satellite Radio.  As for OneNote, that keeps me hooked and with access to my notes no matter where I take them. The Device: Samsung Focus Likes: OneNote integration, Zune capabilities (just note my comment above), fast and smooth interface, calendar, tiles, the device itself. Dislikes: Heavy glitches in SharePoint interaction. And a very weird one I have experienced is, any pictures I get sent from an iPhone via email will register as an attachment but the pictures are not listed as the attachment once I open the message … weird!!  Then, of course, some apps have not made it to the platform (not sure they ever will … Pandora??!!??  Chase??!!??).  But those apps missing is not the phone, or Microsoft’s fault (IMO).  In summary, I am happy with it, and some of the missing apps have made me shift the way I work with the products or features affected … meaning I rely on my desktop stuff for that.

• unable to send mail from postfix on Ubuntu 12.04

  I'm trying to send an email through Google from my localhost. (via PHP5.3) But Google keeps on blocking my requests. I tried to follow the solutions given to a few similar questions, but for some reason they do not work. • Thoughts on Technical Opinions

  Nearly every day, people send email from the C# Station contact form with feedback on the tutorial.  The overwhelming majority is positive and “Thank You” notes.  Some feedback identifies problems such as typos, grammatical errors, or a constructive explanation of an item that was confusing.  It’s pretty rare, but I even get emails that are not very nice at all – no big deal because it comes with the territory and is sometimes humorous.  Sometimes I get questions related to the content that is more of a general nature, referring to best practices or approaches. It’s these more general questions that are sometimes interesting because there’s often no right or wrong answer. There was a time when I was more opinionated about these general scenarios, but not so much anymore. Sure, people who are learning are wanting to know the “right” way to do something and general guidance is good to help them get started.  However, just because a certain practice is the way you or your clique does things, doesn’t mean that another approach is wrong.  These days, I think that a more open-minded approach when providing technical guidance is more constructive. • Disaster Recovery Example

  Previously, I use to work for a small internet company that sells dental plans online. Our primary focus concerning disaster prevention and recovery is on our corporate website and private intranet site. We had a multiphase disaster recovery plan that includes data redundancy, load balancing, and off-site monitoring. Data redundancy is a key aspect of our disaster recovery plan. The first phase of this is to replicate our data to multiple database servers and schedule daily backups of the databases that are stored off site. The next phase is the file replication of data amongst our web servers that are also backed up daily by our collocation. In addition to the files located on the server, files are also stored locally on development machines, and again backed up using version control software. Load balancing is another key aspect of our disaster recovery plan. Load balancing offers many benefits for our system, better performance, load distribution and increased availability. With our servers behind a load balancer our system has the ability to accept multiple requests simultaneously because the load is split between multiple servers. Plus if one server is slow or experiencing a failure the traffic is diverted amongst the other servers connected to the load balancer allowing the server to get back online. The final key to our disaster recovery plan is off-site monitoring that notifies all IT staff of any outages or errors on the main website encountered by the monitor. Messages are sent by email, voicemail, and SMS. According to Disasterrecovery.org, disaster recovery planning is the way companies successfully manage crises with minimal cost and effort and maximum speed compared to others that are forced to make decision out of desperation when disasters occur. In addition Sun Guard stated in 2009 that the first step in disaster recovery planning is to analyze company risks and factor in fixed costs for things like hardware, software, staffing and utilities, as well as indirect costs, such as floor space, power protection, physical and information security, and management. Also availability requirements need to be determined per application and system as well as the strategies for recovery.

• How do you apply to a company way out of your league?

  First, my background: I'm in the market for a new job I have ~2 years experience under my belt Nothing on my resume would JUMP out at you Thus far in my career I've been able to become productive quickly and have been continually praised by managers and coworkers for my abilities to learn and produce. I don't mean to be bragging here, but I want to get across that (at least in my mind) I could be categorized as "very promising young developer" I've been job hunting for a little while now and like most job seekers I've found a handful of companies that are basically "dream" jobs (think Fog Creek or 37Signals). If I were to apply to a company like that in the normal recruitment channels, my resume would probably not make it past the first set of filters. Now, I accept that I'm a longshot for a job at the hottest companies out there, but in my job search I've had a little success in applying for positions I'm not qualified for simply by doing something a little different: sending an email outlining how I don't meet the qualifications but stating why I would do well in the job anyways. In other cases, I've outright asked for a small project/problem that would be representative of the work to prove I can do the job, since I didn't have the specific skills on my resume yet. What I'm wondering is: If I'm not qualified on paper for a particular job, what creative/unique/impressive methods have you thought of or seen work to at least get an interview? For the sake of argument, assume I really am a "very promising young developer". I would love to hear from people who are responsible for hiring - I'd like to hear examples of techniques that got someone noticed when they otherwise wouldn't have. Clarification: I know that I need to continue building my resume to continue advancing. But I'm in the job search NOW, so I'm looking for other approaches

• Item missing/damaged from Amazon order? Steps to quickly contact support to get replacements

  I ordered few items from Amazon.com last week and when the package is delivered I found an item is missing. I reached out to Amazon Customer care and they resolved the issue by resending the missing item. Amazon’s customer care is awesome! They just asked me few questions regarding the order, person who accepted the delivery and without any further delay they provided details on when I’ll get the replacement item. Best part is Amazon customer care support is available through email, chat & telephone. I chose support through a chat session and resolved the issue. If you also missed an item or found a damaged item then here are the steps to be followed to get a replacement item Step 1 -  Go to amazon.com/contact Step 2 -  Click on Contact Us button available in General Support section, you may have to provide authentication details Step 3 – Contact Us screen displays your recent order. If your query is related to the displayed order then proceed go to next step otherwise select your order by clicking on Choose Different Order button Step 4 – Select the missing/damaged items from the list of items displayed from your order Step 5 – Choose the issue with your order. In case if an item is missing you may want to choose “Problem with an order”, “Missing item or parts” and “Entire item missing from shipment”. You may want to choose the options that are close to the issue you are facing with your order Step 6 – Choose how you want to support. You can choose either “E-Mail”, “Phone” or “Chat”. Based on the selected Support mode, proceed and communicate to them about the issue.  Rest assured. They will resolve your issue quickly.
