How best to implement support for multiple devices in a web application.

Hello. My client would like a business application to support 'every possible device'. The application in question is essentially a web application and 'every possible device', I believe encompasses mobile phones, netbooks, ipad, other browser supporting devices, etc. The application is somewhat complex w.r.t. the data it captures and other functions it performs (reporting). If I continue to honor increasing complexity in the application, I guess there are more chances of it not working on other devices. I'd like to know how web applications support multiple devices conventionally? Are there multiple versions of presentation layer (like many times I find m.website.com dedicated for mobile devices)? Further, if my application is to take advantage of Java Script, RIA (Flash, SilverLight) then what are the consequences and workarounds? Mine is a .Net based application and the stack also contains Ext JS Java Script library. While I would like to use it for sure, considering that I would be doing a lot of work in Java Script rather than HTML, this could be a problem. The answer to the above could be descriptive. If there is something already prescribed out there, please share the link(s). Thanks.

IE8 ignores jQuery UI 'dialog' minHeight and height settings

I'm using jQuery 1.4.4 with jQueryUI 1.8.7 to display a modal dialog box. I'm having a problem where IE8 renders a scrollbar and appears to ignore the minHeight and height options in all the many different combinations I've tried them in. Sending information between JavaScript and Web Services using AJAX

Alright so I'm using Microsoft's Web Services and AJAX to get information from a SQL database for use with java script on the client side. And I'm wondering what the best method is. Before I started working on the project, the web services were setup to return a C# List filled with some objects. Those objects variables (ints, strings, etc.) contain the data I want to use. Of course, java script can't do much with this, to the best of my knowledge. I then modified the web service to return a 2D Array, but java script got confused, and to the best of my knowledge can't handle 2D array's returned from C#. I then tried to use a regular array, but then a found the length property of an array in JS doesn't carry over, so I couldn't preform a for loop through all the items, because there wasn't anyway of knowing how many elements there were. The only other thing I can thing of is returning a string with special char's to separate the data, but this seems way too convoluted. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Adding to page control collection from inside a user control

I have an asp.net usercontrol which represents a "popup" dialog. Basically, it's a wrapper for the jQuery UI dialog which can be subclassed to easily make dialogs. As part of this control, I need to inject a div into the page the control is used on, either at the very top or very bottom of the form so that when the popup is instantiated, it's parent is changed to this div. This allows "nested" popups without the child popup being trapped inside the parent popup. The trouble is, I can't find a safe way to inject this div into the page. A usercontrol doesn't have a preinit event, so I can't do it there, and calling Page.Form.Controls.Add(...) in Init, Load or PreRender causes the standard exception "The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases." I thought I had found a solution by using... ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Page, Me.GetType, UniqueID + "_Dialog_Div", containerDiv, False) ... which seemed to work well normally, but recently a coworker tried putting an UpdatePanel inside the dialog and now she's getting the error "The script tag registered for type 'ASP.controls_order_viewzips_ascx' and key 'ctl00$ContentBody$OViewZips_Dialog_Div' has invalid characters outside of the script tags: . Only properly formatted script tags can be registered." How are you supposed to add controls to the pages control collection from inside a user control?

Prevent bubbling without Jquery

When I move mouse over the container panel, the child panel is displayed but as soon as i move mouse over the child panel, the mouseout event is triggered and panel get hidden. This is simplified version of my code because panels are located inside gridview and therefore i can't use document.getElementById("panelchild") as it is (the js will get the specific id latter), but for now i want to make it work for this simple case. Should I still be using jquery .getJson in 1.4.2?

Hi I was looking at the 14 days of jquery http://jquery14.com/day-01/jquery-14 and I saw this and it got me to wondering is there a point to use getJson anymore? JSON and script types auto-detected by content-type (jQuery.ajax Documentation, Commit 1, Commit 2) If the response to an Ajax request is returned with a JSON mime type (application/json), the dataType defaults to “json” (if no dataType is specified). Additionally, if the response to an Ajax request is returned with a JavaScript mime type (text/javascript or application/x-javascript) , the dataType defaults to “script” (if no dataType is specified), causing the script to automatically execute. First I can see such a huge benefit of this. In jquery 1.3 I came to a situation where in some cases I would return a partial view and some cases I would return a json result (asp.net mvc). It worked in firefox but in no other browser and one of the problems was I basically had to tell jquery to either do json or text/html. With it automatically detecting I could get away with this. Anyways I found a solution around this at that time. So now it just makes me wonder if there is any point to using GetJson. I am also unsure how to set these JavaScript mime types? I am assuming that if you return a JsonResult from asp.net mvc it will set it. but I am not sure if I was just sending a text result if it would be set( I am not sure if ContentResult would set this).

I read similar posts like mine on stackoverflow.com and most of them suggested removing repetitive "jquery.unobtrusive-ajax.min.js" calss in page, but as I saw the output page I only see on link to the "jquery.unobtrusive-ajax.min.js" script.

Large free block of english non-pronoun text

As part of teaching myself python I've written a script which allows a user to play hangman. At the moment, the hangman word to be guessed is simply entered manually at the start of the script's code. I want instead for the script to choose randomly from a large list of english words. This I know how to do - my problem is finding that list of words to work from in the first place. Does anyone know of a source on the net for, say, 1000 common english words where they can be downloaded as a block of text or something similar that I can work with? (My initial thought was grabbing a chunk of a novel from project gutenburg [this project is only for my own amusement and won't be available anywhere else so copyright etc doesn't matter hugely to me btw], but anything like that is likely to contain too many names or non-standard words that wouldn't be suitable for hangman. I need text that only has words legal for use in scrabble, basically). It's a slightly odd question for here I suppose, but actually I thought the answer might be of use not just to me but anyone else working on a project for a wordgame or similar that needs a large seed list of words to work from. Many thanks for any links or suggestions :)

PHP/Javascript: Restart Form Button Isn't Working, Code Insde

Basically I want a confirmation box to pop up when they click the button asking if they sure they want to restart, if yes, then it destroys session and takes them to the first page. Big task - problems with page refresh and ajax

I have a navigation which load dynamically content via ajax. But if I refresh the page or visit another url and go back the current content is away and I see the old content under the first menu tab. Now I have to solve this problem. Increasing understanding of validating a string with PHP string functions

I've just started attempts to validate data in PHP and I'm trying to understand this concept better. I was expecting the string passed as an argument to the $data parameter for the test_input() function to be formatted by the following PHP functions. trim() to remove white space from the end of the string stripslashes() to return a string with backslashes stripped off htmlspecialchars() to convert special characters to HTML entities The issue is that the string that I am echoing at the end of the function is not being formatted in the way I desire at all. In fact it looks exactly the same when I run this code on my server - no white space removed, the backslash is not stripped and no special characters converted to HTML entities. My question is have I gone about this in the wrong approach? Should I be creating the variable called $santised_input on 3 separate lines with each of the functions trim(), stripslashes() and htmlspecialchars()? By my understanding surely I am overwriting the value of the $santised_input variable each time I recreate it on a new line of code. Therefore the trim() and stripslashes() string functions will never be executed. What I am trying to achieve is using the "$santised_input" variable to run all of these PHP string functions when the $data argument is passed to my test_input() function. Slowing Down mywindow.print()

The print dialog box opens on top of the window blocking the contents (presuming #1 is an easy fix). How can it positioned? Thanks - TY

I'm having difficulty modifying a script for this situation and wondering if someone maybe able to help: I have an address table and a phone table both sharing the same column called id_number. So id_number = 2 on both tables refers to the same entity. Address and phone information used to be stored in one table (the address table) but it is now split into address and phone tables since we moved to Oracle 11g. There is a 3rd table called both_ids. This table also has an id_number column in addition to an other_ids column storing SSN and some other ids. codeigniter cron job with http access

Sorry if this is a duplicate question...I've searched around and found similar advice but nothing that helps my exact problem. And please excuse the noob questions, CRON is a new thing for me. I have a codeigniter script that scrapes the html DOM of another site and stores some of that in a database. I'd like to run this script at a regular interval. This has lead me to looking into cron jobs. The page I have is at myserver.com/index.php/update I realize I can run a cron job with curl and run this page. If I want to be a bit more secure I can put a string at the end like: myserver.com/index.php/update/asdfh2784fufds And check for that in my CI controller. This seems like it would be mostly secure, but doesn't seem like the "right" way to do things. I've looked into running CI from the command line, and can execute basic pages like: php index.php mycontroller But when I try to do: php index.php update It doesn't work. I suspect this is because it needs to use HTTP to scrape the DOM of the outside page. So, my question: How do I securely run a codeigniter script with a cron job that needs HTTP access?

jQuery logic firing twice from a Usercontrol when used in a jQueryUI modal dialog

I have an asp.net usercontrol that I'm using to put a bunch of HTML and Jquery logic into to be shared on several pages. This usercontrol has some dropdown boxes loaded from json calls and has no added codebehind logic. When I use this usercontrol on a normal page it works perfectly fine, and no issues at all. However, when I wrap the usercontrol in a div, and use a jqueryUI modal dialog, everything in the usercontrol fires twice. Not only code in the initial $(document).ready(function() {});, but also every function is also fired twice when called. Debugging this in Visual Studio, I see that everything is first being called from the external JS file, and then again from a "script block" file that is somehow getting generated on the fly. This script block file isn't getting generated on a page that doesn't wrap the user control in a modal. The same happens if I use IISExpress or IIS7. The question is, why is this script block file getting created, and why is all my jQuery logic firing twice? --edit-- Here is the div: <div id="divMyDiv" title="MyDiv"> <uc1:MyUserControl runat="server" ID="MyUsercontrol" /> </div> Here is the modal logic that uses it: $("#divMyDiv").dialog({ autoOpen: false, height: 400, width: 400, modal: true, open: function (type, data) { $(this).parent().appendTo("form"); } }); Note: The problm still occurs, even if I remove the "open:" function. But, it does not occur if I remove the entire dialog block, so it is specific to this dialog call.

md5_file() not working with IP addresses?

Reupload it and try again'; When I run this script, it doesn't even output an error. It just stops. It loads for a bit, and then it just stops. Further down the script I implement it again, and it fails here, too: while($row=mysql_fetch_array($execquery, MYSQL_ASSOC)){ $hash = @md5_file($row['url']); $url = $row['url']; mysql_query("UPDATE urls SET hash='" . $hash . "' WHERE url='" . $url . HI, I upload my php testing script to online vps server just now. The script used to parse a big size XML file(about 4M, 7000Lines). But my IE explorer show the online error message below. Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 77 bytes) in /var/www/test/result/index.php on line 26 I am sure I already tested the php script on localhost successfully. Is there any configuration need be enable/modify on my VPS? Such as php.ini or some setting for apache server? I just verified there are about 200M memory usage are avaliable for my VPS. Choosing between Facebook iframe scrollbar or page cut off halfway

I have an iframe tab in facebook. The problem is that my page is cut off after about 800px (that leaves about 400px). I've set the height in facebook to "fluid". It works absolutely fine in every other browser but not in IE8. As a side question, why does IE still exist? It's the absolute worst thing. Anyways, I added this to the head:  But that just gets me back to having the scrollbars again.

Redirect after refreshing update panel

Hello, Do you think it's possible to refresh an update panel and immediately after redirecting the response (for instance a download) ? I tried this: an invisible button - as an asyncpostbacktrigger a download button - when it is clicked the onclientclick clicks the invisible button the click event on the invisible button refreshes the update panel then the download button click event launches the download (normal postback which launches the download) However for some reason when the invisible button is clicked by the download button client script, it doesn't refresh the update panel.. Do you have an idea why it doesn't work? Or do you have other and cleaner techniques? Need Help on JavaScript to Trim

I am facing some problems with my server space. The images are using all the space from the server, making it slow. As it is an eCommerce website, it cannot be slow or we lose customers. If I have the following: SKU's : ABC123-001 > catName > Phone ABC753-851 > catName > MAC AT1233-098 > catName > PC How can I use trim to make it the following: SKU's : 123 > catName > Phone 753 > catName > MAC 1233 > catName > PC Which I would use in the following script: <script type="text/javascript"> $(function(){ var sku = $("#ProductBreadcrumb ul li:last").text(); $(".ProductThumbImage img").attr('src','http://img.example.com/images/'+catName+'/'+sku+'.jpg'); }); </script> So, basically, the output for the picture link would be: http://img.example.com/images/phone/123.jpg http://img.example.com/images/mac/753.jpg http://img.example.com/images/pc/1233.jpg So yeah, first problem I have to face is.. I was assigned to integrate MangoSlick theme to our current admin panel, Its a jQuery, Slick(?) and Responsive template. First, let me explain how the API goes In the documentation, it only says this is the only way data-[options]=[value] Example: If I wanna make a progress bar I can use this format <div class="progress"> <div class="bar" data-title="[title]" data-value="[value]" data-max="[max]" data-format="[format string]"></div> </div> so filling-in values <div class="progress"> <div class="bar" data-title="Space" data-value="1285" data-max="5120" data-format="0,0 MB"></div> </div> I will have this as output Now, the main question is when I use jQuery attr() to change the attribute values for data-title, data-max, data-value and data-format.
