• Prevent nautilus showing partition mounted in bash script

  In my bash script I mount partitions, check them, copy files to them, and unmount. When the script mounts the partition, Nautilus pops up with a Window showing the partition and stealing focus. This is something I want to avoid. Note: I know I can change the behaviour of this in System settings, Details, Removable media, Never prompt or start programs on media insertion, but I don't want to change the behaviour e.g. if a USB stick is plugged in, I just want to prevent it in my bash script. Actually this auto display doesn't seem consistent. If I do the exact same command from the terminal, Nautilus doesn't show, and I know there are other mounts in my script that don't show. • Hard-copy approaches to time tracking

  I have a problem: I suck at tracking time-on-task for specific feature/defects/etc while coding them. I tend to jump between tasks a fair bit (partly due to the inherit juggling required by professional software development, partly due to my personal tendancy to focus on the code itself and not the business process around code). My personal preference is for a hard-copy system. Even with gabillions of pixels of real-estate on-screen I find it terribly distracting to keep a tracking window convienient; either I forget about it or it gets in my ways. So, looking for suggestions on time-tracking. My only requirement is a simple system to track start/stop times per task. I've considered going as far as buying a time-clock and giving each ticket a dedicated time-card. When I start working on it, punch-in; when done working, punch-out.

• Why doesn't the command do-release-upgrade doesn't require sudo?

  I was wondering why the command do-release-upgrade doesn't require sudo? I mean, it does significantly change your system, so I would have guessed it requires sudo. This is from ubuntu self, but it isn't that helpful. I just want to know how this is secure for the integrity for my system, if every user can access this command. Thanks in advance. [EDIT]: I used a new terminal window, thus no sudo that wasn't expired yet, and I used the command do-release-upgrade NOT sudo do-release-upgrade.So even with unexpired sudo I should be unable to upgrade. • Local DNS and Apache Server Configuration Interferring - example.com / www.example.com

  I have a domain for my site: example.com I am also running local DNS with these lines: www IN CNAME server.<host_provider>.com. dev IN CNAME server.<host_provider>.com. So www.example.com and dev.example.com go to production and development sites, respectively, that are hosted by a host company. In my Apache configuration for the main site, I'm running a rewrite rule like this: RewriteEngine ON RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com$|!dev\.example\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www\.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=302,L,NE] This rule seems to work, as when you are off the network and go to example.com in the browser, you get redirected to www.example.com. The problem is when I'm on the network, and I go to example.com I get an error page, saying page can't be found. No server errors; just a page can't be found, as if the local DNS is causing it to stop looking at that point. I'm also using Nettica for DNS service and have this A record in place: example.com Host (A) Default xxx.xx.xxx.xx This handles the external DNS, but my problem seems to be related to my internal DNS. For example, inside my network, I can go to servers on the network with addresses like this: server.example.com server1.example.com server2.example.com These are configured in my local DNS. I'm just not sure how to get past the "empty" subdomain and go to example.com. Adding to this since it might not be clear. If I'm out side the example.com network, on another network, like example123.com, then when I go to example.com I'm redirected to www.example.com as expected, eg, the Apache rewrite rule is working. • Is there any way to retire a AT&T Yahoo Email Account

  Here are the facts as I (pretty sure) know them. Yahoo handles AT&T's DSL email accounts. I've called AT&T tech support and customer service and they say they can't help, but there has GOT to be a way to do this. It's too simple of a thing not to be able to do. I got behind on my dsl bill and my account got suspended. When I paid my bill, they said my account had been deactivated and I had to get a new account. When I tried to register my account with my old email address it would not let me, saying it was in use. I used a new email. The old email address is tied to a dsl account that can NEVER be reactivated. There has got to be a way to retire the old email address so that I can re-create it as a subaccount on my new dsl account. I'm not interested in anything that was in the old account (emails, addresses, etc) - I just want the address back.

• How to change eclipse font sizes

  I'm trying to reduce the font sizes used in Eclipse. I've read several notes talking about how to do this, but none of them have made a difference. Obviously, changing it in Eclipse preferences doesn't do it. The common answers about using "Appearance-Fonts" doesn't work, because there is no "Fonts" tab. I believe I saw one person say that the "Fonts" tab isn't supposed to be there anymore. The next suggestion is to install MyUnity and change the font settings there. That appeared to change the fonts used in other apps, like gnome-terminal and window headers, but it still has had no effect on Eclipse.

• Cannot access system after deleting passwd file

  I was trying to change my user name and also my /home/username and my system started to crash. I deleted the passwd file but I had a backup named passwd_bkp. I tried to rename this passwd_bkp as passwd and it did not work. No commands were being executed... I was in a terminal window. I re-started my system and now I cannot login. The GRub loads two options: Linux and recovery mode. I tried to open a sessions as root but it says the file system is corrupted. I cannot access my files. Did I lose all my files?

  Have you ever wondered if the site you’re visiting is powered by WordPress or if the webapp you’re using is powered by Ruby on Rails?  With these extensions for Google Chrome, you’ll never have to wonder again. Geeks love digging under the hood to see what makes their favorite apps and sites tick.  But opening the “View Source” window today doesn’t tell you everything there is to know about a website.  Plus, even if you can tell what CMS is powering a website from its source, it can be tedious to dig through lines of code to find what you’re looking for.  Also, the HTML code never tells you what web server a site is running on or what version of PHP it’s using.  With three extensions for Google Chrome you’ll never have to wonder again.  Note that some sites may not give as much information, but still, you’ll find enough data from most sites to be interesting. Discover Web Frameworks and Javascript Libraries with Chrome Sniffer If you want to know what CMS is powering a site or if it’s using Google Analytics or Quantcast, this is the extension for you.  Chrome Sniffer (link below) identifies over 40 different frameworks, and is constantly adding more.  It shows the logo of the main framework on the site on the left of your address bar.  Here wee see Chrome Sniffer noticed that How-To Geek is powered by WordPress.   Click the logo to see other frameworks on the site.  We can see that the site also has Google Analytics and Quantcast.  If you want more information about the framework, click on its logo and the framework’s homepage will open in a new tab. As another example, we can see that the Tumblr Staff blog is powered by Tumblr (of course), the Discus comment system, Quantcast, and the Prototype JavaScript framework. Or here’s a site that’s powered by Drupal, Google Analytics, Mollom spam protection, and jQuery.  Chrome Sniffer definitely uncovers a lot of neat stuff, so if you’re into web frameworks you’re sure to enjoy this extension. Find Out What Web Server The Site is Running On Want to know whether the site you’re looking at is running on IIS or Appache?  The Web Server Notifier extension for Chrome (link below) lets you easily recognize the web server a site is running on by its favicon on the right of the address bar.  Click the icon to see more information. Some web servers will show you a lot of information about their server, including version, operating system, PHP version, OpenSSL version, and more. Others will simply tell you their name. If the site is powered by IIS, you can usually tell the version of Windows Server its running on since the IIS versions are specific to a version of Windows.  Here we see that Microsoft.com is running on the latest and greatest – Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5. Discover Web Technologies Powering Sites Wondering if a webapp is powered by Ruby on Rails or ASP.NET?  The Web Technology Notifier extension for Chrome (link below), from the same developer as the Web Server Notifier, will let you easily discover the backend of a site.  You’ll see the technology’s favicon on the right of your address bar, and, as with the other extension, can get more information by clicking the icon. Here we can see that Backpack from 37signals is powered by the Phusion Passenger module to run Ruby on Rails.   Microsoft’s new Docs.com Office Online apps is powered by ASP.NET…   And How-To Geek has PHP running to power WordPress. • SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 and the Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called error message

  When trying to install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 to a SQL Server 2008 instance that is running on a virtual machine, the installer will start:   But then after about 20 seconds I receive the following error message: TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure. ----------------------------- SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ Searching for this issue I found that several people have the same problem and there is no clear solution.  Some had success with closing windows or Internet Explorer but that didn’t work for me; what did work is to make sure the SQL Server 2008 “Please wait while SQL Server 2008 Setup processes the current operation.” dialog is selected and has the focus when it first shows up.  Selected (with the current focus) it looks like this:   Without focus the dialog looks like this: Add a comment if you find out any information about how to consistently get around this issue or why it is happening in the first place.

• Can HTML injection be a security issue?

  I recently came across a website that generates a random adjective, surrounded by a prefix and suffix entered by the user. For example, if the user enters "123" for prefix, and "789" for suffix, it might generate "123Productive789". I've been screwing around with it, and I thought I might try something out: I entered this into the prefix field: <a href="javascript:window.close();">Click</a><hr /> And, sure enough, I was given the link, then an <hr>, then a random adjective. What I'm wondering is, could this be dangerous? There must be many more websites out there that have this issue, are all of them vulnerable to some sort of php injection?

• PIN request at each login after update to Maverick

  I have a netbook with included 3G mobile broadband card (Huawei E620). I have configured the broadband network connection in the Network Manager and it works perfectly. However since Maverick upgrade, a window appears just after login I asking for the SIMcard PIN. This happens every time I log in and did not happen with Lucid. Note that the PIN is stored in the configuration of the mobile broadband connection and Lucid was satisfied with that. Is there a way to prevent this request or, at least, to have the system rember the PIN and stop ansking for it? If it may be useful, the broadband network connection is configured as not being available for other users. Also, I would like to keep the SIMcard asking for the PIN; only I do not want to insert it manually at login.

• Resources for 2D rendering using OpenGL?

  I noticed that there is quite some difference between 3D and 2D rendering using OpenGL, the techniques are different - pixel-perfect placing is a lot more desirable, among other things. Are there any good (complete) references on using OpenGL for rendering 2D graphics? There are quite a few "tutorials" around on the net that help you open a window, set up a half-decent environment and draw a sprite, but no real good information on rotation, blending, lightning, drawing order, using the z-buffer, particles, "complex" primitives (circles, stars, cross symbols), ensuring pixel-perfect rendering, instancing and many other staple 2D effects/techniques. Any books, great blogs, anything? Any particular awesome libraries to read?

  I'm starting to get the hang of GDB, but everything still feels much slower than when debugging in Eclipse or Visual Studio. Are there any GDB commands you find particularly useful/productive? My life became dramatically better when I discovered: list - Display source code near the current instruction But that is still pretty basic. (And unnecessary when running GDB from Emacs.) Is there any way to do things like setup a watch window? (Print and update the result of an expression every time execution stops.)

• Terminal line glitches

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 mini + LXDE and wanted to make my command line different in terminal (than just plain white), so I added blue color to path line (everything until $ sign) and it works fine but I have two strange glitches now: When i write a line which is longer than terminal window, instead of starting at next line it starts at the same one, overwriting everything which was in there. Sometimes while navigating over previous commands (up/down arrow keys) some part of command gets stuck and is treated as part of prompt (the blue text), but it is white and is non-deletable and is not taken as part of command when i press enter. What could I mess up? The bad thing is that I don't remember what exactly did I change, but i'm sure I changed only one line in bashrc

• Disabling Navigation Flicks in WPF

  I am currently working on a multi-touch application using WPF.  One thing that has been irritating me with this development is an automatic navigation forward/back command that is bound to forward and backwards flicks.  Many of my touch-based interactions were being thwarted by gestures picked up by WPF as navigation.  I just wanted to disable this behavior. My programmatic back/forward calls are not affected by this change, which is nice.  Here is how I did it:  In my main window, I added the following command bindings:<NavigationWindow.CommandBindings> <CommandBinding Command="NavigationCommands.BrowseBack" Executed="DoNothing" /> <CommandBinding Command="NavigationCommands.BrowseForward" Executed="DoNothing" /> </NavigationWindow.CommandBindings> Then, the DoNothing method in the code-behind does nothing:private void DoNothing(object sender, ExecutedRoutedEventArgs e) { } There may be a better way to do this, but I haven’t found one.

• Why does my display keep turning off every 10 minutes?

  I have installed Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) in VirtualBox as well as virtualbox-guest-additions . The display resolution adapts to the size of the window as expected, but the display turns off after 10 minutes of inactivity. Thinking there was some sort of power management issue at play, I went to Power in the settings dialog: There doesn't really seem to be anything there that mentions "turn off display after xxx minutes" so I assume everything is configured correctly there. Next I went to Screen and found an option there "Turn off after:". Aha! I thought. Now I have found the option - but alas: even after setting it to "never" and restarting multiple times, the display still shuts off after 10 minutes. What am I missing? What option am I overlooking?

• How to email photo from Ubuntu F-Spot application via Gmail?

  My father runs Ubuntu and wants to be able to use the Gnome photo manager, F-Spot, to email photos. However, he must use Gmail as his client because (a) it's the only client he knows how to use and (b) his ISP refuses to reveal his SMTP password. I've got as far as setting up Firefox to use GMail to handle mailto: links and I've also configured firefox as the system default mailer using gnome-default-applications-properties. F-Spot presents a mailto: URL with an attach=file:///tmp/mumble.jpg header. So here's the problem: the attachment never shows up. I can't tell if Firefox is dropping the attachment header, if GMail doesn't support the header, or what. I've learned that: There's no official header in the mailto: URL RFC that explains how to add an attachment. I can't find documentation on how Firefox handles mailto: URLs that would explain to me how to communicate to Firefox that I want an attachment. I can't find any documentation for GMail's URL API that would enable me to tell GMail directly to start composing a message with a given file as an attachement. I'm perfectly capable of writing a shell script to interpolate around F-Spot to massage the URL that F-Spot presents into something that will coax Firefox into doing the right thing. But I can't figure out how to persuade Firefox to start composing a GMail message with a local file attached. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Why does this script not open parallel gnome-terminals on a server?

  Why am I not able to have parallel gnome-terminals on my server while I can on my client. Here is a test that illustrates the problem. #!/bin/bash # this is the parent script gnome-terminal --command "./left.sh" sleep 10 gnome-terminal --command "./right.sh" #!/bin/bash echo "this is the left script" read -p "press any key to close this terminal" key #!/bin/bash echo "this is the right script" read -p "press any key to close this terminal" key When I run this on a regular ubuntu desktop (maverick) I see two terminals after 10 seconds. When I run this on a maverick server at a server farm, the second window does not appear until after I close the first one and wait 10 seconds. I am using tightvncserver to view the server desktop. (I could have simplified a bit more. The 10 second sleep is extraneous to the problem. In my real world application I need the first terminal to do some real work before starting the second. The problem probably still exists even if there is no sleep.)

• Volume indicator issue after xubuntu 13.10 upgrade

  Last night I decided to upgrade my system to the latest version of Xubuntu, 13.10. The process went fine, but now I'm facing this strange issue. There is no sound settings available in the settings manager window and the volume indicator looks like when the volume is muted, clicking the indicator being broken as well. The indicator looks like this: I tried to do a alsa force-reload followed by a restart of the computer, but didn't help. Any thoughts ? l.e. After some digging I found out that the volume control exists, so this must be a volume indicator issue.

• Ubuntu installer doesn't see internal hard drive on DELL Vostro 3360

  I just received a new DELL Vostro 3360, it has Windows 7 preinstalled. When it comes to the partition window I can't see the hard drive there. I see only /dev/sda or /dev/sdb (either one and in both cases it's a usb drive from which I'm installing). I tried every imaginable BIOS configuration. Tried to change the SATA mode to ATA, DHCI and more. EDIT: I tried to install with standard Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit, and 11.10 64 bit official versions. No luck. I'll appreciate any suggestion.

• Using Windows Previous Versions to access ZFS Snapshots (July 14, 2009)

  The Previous Versions tab on the Windows desktop provides a straightforward, intuitive way for users to view or recover files from ZFS snapshots.  ZFS snapshots are read-only, point-in-time instances of a ZFS dataset, based on the same copy-on-write transactional model used throughout ZFS.  ZFS snapshots can be used to recover deleted files or previous versions of files and they are space efficient because unchanged data is shared between the file system and its snapshots.  Snapshots are available locally via the .zfs/snapshot directory and remotely via Previous Versions on the Windows desktop. Shadow Copies for Shared Folders was introduced with Windows Server 2003 but subsequently renamed to Previous Versions with the release of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.  Windows shadow copies, or snapshots, are based on the Volume Snapshot Service (VSS) and, as the [Shared Folders part of the] name implies, are accessible to clients via SMB shares, which is good news when using the Solaris CIFS Service.  And the nice thing is that no additional configuration is required - it "just works". On Windows clients, snapshots are accessible via the Previous Versions tab in Windows Explorer using the Shadow Copy client, which is available by default on Windows XP SP2 and later.  For Windows 2000 and pre-SP2 Windows XP, the client software is available for download from Microsoft: Shadow Copies for Shared Folders Client. Assuming that we already have a shared ZFS dataset, we can create ZFS snapshots and view them from a Windows client. zfs snapshot tank/home/administrator@snap101zfs snapshot tank/home/administrator@snap102 To view the snapshots on Windows, map the dataset on the client then right click on a folder or file and select Previous Versions.  Note that Windows will only display previous versions of objects that differ from the originals.  So you may have to modify files after creating a snapshot in order to see previous versions of those files. The screenshot above shows various snapshots in the Previous Versions window, created at different times.  On the left panel, the .zfs folder is visible, illustrating that this is a ZFS share.  The .zfs setting can be toggled as desired, it makes no difference when using previous versions.  To make the .zfs folder visible: zfs set snapdir=visible tank/home/administrator To hide the .zfs folder: zfs set snapdir=hidden tank/home/administrator The following screenshot shows the Previous Versions panel when a file has been selected.  In this case the user is prompted to view, copy or restore the file from one of the available snapshots. As can be seen from the screenshots above, the Previous Versions window doesn't display snapshot names: snapshots are listed by snapshot creation time, sorted in time order from most recent to oldest.  There's nothing we can do about this, it's the way that the interface works.  Perhaps one point of note, to avoid confusion, is that the ZFS snapshot creation time isnot the same as the root directory creation timestamp. In conclusion, Shadow Copies for Shared Folders provides a straightforward way for users to view or recover files from ZFS snapshots.  The Windows desktop provides an easy to use, intuitive GUI and no configuration is required to use or access previous versions of files or folders.
