  I have a bunch of audio files that are named .wav but it seems not all .wavs are created equal. For example: $ file * file1.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz file2.wav: Audio file with ID3 version 2.2.0, contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 160 kbps, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo file3.wav: Claris clip art? file4.wav: Audio file with ID3 version 2.2.0, contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 160 kbps, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo And for good measure, a non-wav: file5.m4a: ISO Media, MPEG v4 system, iTunes AAC-LC I would like to convert all of these files to the format that file1.wav is: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz What is the proper set of arguments to pass to afconvert to make that happen?

I was aware of BidNow but had not found the time to take a look at it nor seems it running before. Adrian convinced me it was worth some a further look. In brief I like it :-) It is more than Hello World, but still easy enough to follow. Bid Now is an online auction site designed to demonstrate how you can build highly scalable consumer applications using Windows Azure. It is built using Visual Studio 2008, Windows Azure and uses Windows Azure Storage. Auctions are processed using Windows Azure Queues and Worker Roles. Authentication is provided via Live Id. • Cannot log in to the desktop on ubuntu 11.10?

  The problem is, I could log in under the terminal, i could ifup eth0, i could do anything I want in the terminal, but if I use ctrl+alt+f7 goto the gnome login screen, after I input the correct password, the system just send me back to same login screen again. I have created a new user, but it didn't work. I have change all the files under ~/ to jichao:jichao(which is my username) with chown -hR jichao:jichao /home/jichao, but it didn't work too. I searched the internet, somebody said I should see the logs under /var/log/gdm, but there is not a /var/log/gdm directory in my box. Please ensure you have JAVA_HOME points to JDK rather than JRE. • WordPress is now nicely supported on SQL Server (and SQL Azure for that matter)

  WordPress is enormously popular for blogs and full websites thanks to an awesome eco system which has built up around it, the simplicity (relatively) of getting it up and running plus the flexibility to “bend it” in all sorts of directions. When I say bend, check out the following which are all WordPress sites My “back up blog” http://iupdateable.wordpress.com/  My groups “odd site” :) http://ubelly.com My favourite “cheap games” site http://www.frugalgaming.co.uk/  WordPress users typically run their sites on Linux and MySQL, although PHP (the language in which WordPress is written) can be happily run on Windows. Both fine technologies in their own right, but for me (and probably a fair few others) I would love to use WordPress but with the technologies I know best (aka Windows, IIS and SQL Server). However, that has proven to be actually rather tricky in practice to get working – until now. Earlier last month OmniTI released a patch for WordPress which provides SQL Server and SQL Azure support.  In parallel with that some fine folks inside Microsoft have also created http://wordpress.visitmix.com which contains information about running WordPress on the Microsoft platform with a particular focus on SQL Server and SQL Azure.  Top stuff!   Hello. I have just installed Microsoft SQL Express from here: http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/express-down.aspx I need it because an example of some code I have uses it. My question is: How do I start using it? Which port it opens by default. All I have after installing it is this: I'm not asking for a full tutorial on how to admin MSSql, just a hint on what to do next. I have downloaded and tested in the past Oracle XE and test it with SQuirreL SQL client with out problems.

• SQL 2005 wont fully uninstall

  Hi all, I am trying to uninstall my default instance of SQL Server 2005 from my Windows 7 machine but having a few problems. Everything uninstalls as it should using Add/Remove programs but for some reason I am still left with the ‘SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER)’ service installed and have no way of getting rid of it. I have tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 and uninstall, followed the following Microsoft kb article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967 which uses the ARPWrapper.exe /Remove switch, but still the service exists. I want to get rid of every service so I can start with a clean install of named instances of SQL2005 and SQL2008. Any help would be appreciated. Cragly

• Observable Adapter

  .NET 4.0 introduced a pair of interfaces, IObservable<T> and IObserver<T>, supporting subscriptions to and notifications for push-based sequences. In combination with Reactive Extensions (Rx), these interfaces provide a convenient and uniform way of describing event sources and sinks in .NET. The StreamInsight CTP refresh in November 2009 included an Observable adapter supporting “reactive” event inputs and outputs.   While we continue to believe it enables an important programming model, the Observable adapter was not included in the final (RTM) release of Microsoft StreamInsight 1.0. The release takes a dependency on .NET 3.5 but for timing reasons could not take a dependency on .NET 4.0. Shipping a separate copy of the observable interfaces in StreamInsight – as we did in the CTP refresh – was not a viable option in the RTM release.   Within the next months, we will be shipping another preview of the Observable adapter that targets .NET 4.0. • Providing a public Web-Hosting service on MS Windows - advice and resources

  Are there any resources offering advice on how to setup a microsoft based web-hosting service? I currently offer LAMP hosting with cPanel, but there is some demand for IIS & SQL Server. As far as I can tell MS Windows Web Server 2008 R2 edition allows unlimited IIS connections. And a per-processor license for MS SQL Server Web Edition 2008 also permits unlimited connections. Where I am falling down is that I can't figure out how to get "unlimited" Active Directory users. I can't use 2008R2 Web Server edition for AD, so I will need the 2008R2 standard edition, I think. Does Microsoft have a provision for using AD in an ISP scenario? I am looking at using the cPanel Enkompas system to manage the Windows software, and Enkompas requires AD for user authentication. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  Consider one feed like this: http://feeds.feedburner.com/codinghorror It has the entire content inside the description tag of the feed, so you don't need to access the website to read the post. Now I have the problem of creating an interface for a feed like this on a desktop client. What's the best way to render the text in a pleasant way to the user? My first thought was to parse the entire HTML as if I was a web browser, but that looks really hard to do in a satisfying way. Are there any better (faster) alternatives? Rephrasing: how a desktop rss client such as feeddamon parses the input to display it nicely? Does it have a web browser inside it?

• Installing Windows Mobile SDK without Visual Studio

  Is it possible to install the Windows Mobile SDK without having Visual Studio? I am using SharpDevelop to write a Windows Mobile application, but I need to use an assembly in the Windows Mobile 6.0 SDK. When I try to install the SDK I get a message that says Visual Studio is a prerequisite, and I am un able to install it. Is there a way to trick it in to thinking Visual Studio is installed; maybe a registry entry that can be added or something, or am I just hosed? Is there a reason I need to pay for Microsoft's IDE, or is this just a way for Microsoft to make some extra money? Thanks,

  Access to our computer (not only to the internet) needs to be restricted for the accounts of my kids (7, 8) until they are old enough to manage this by themselves. Until then we need to be able to define the following: the hours of the day when computing is o.k. (e.g. 5 - 9 pm) the days of the week when computing is not o.k. (e.g. mondays to fridays) the amount of time allowed per day (e.g. 2 hours) In 11.10 all of the following that used to do the job don't work any more: Timekpr: for 11.10 not available through the ppa. The installed version from 11.04 does not work in 11.10. Timoutd: command line alternative, but in 11.10 removed from the repositories. Gnome Nanny: Looks great but repeatedly crashes to force restarting X-server. So we can't use or recommed this program at the moment. Are there any other alternatives?

How would you proceed to the task of measuring CPU computing power? And on top of that: I would worry about a properly minimum workload induced by concurrently running services; is it correct to run benchmarking as a standalone (and possibly avulsed from the OS environment) process?

• Are there any alternative JS ports of Box2D?

  I have been thinking about creating a top down 2D car game for HTML5. For my first game I wrote the physics and collisions my self but for this one I would like to use some ready made library. I found out Box2D and its JS port. http://box2d-js.sourceforge.net It seems to be quite old port, made in 2008. Is it lacking many features of current Box2D or does it have major issues with it? And are there any alternatives for it?

  We have a website which we want to show adverts in - However, these are custom adverts uploaded by the webmaster, not the Google adverts, or any adverts the network chooses. Ideally, there would be both options. We were considering developing our own advert-management system, but looking at the big picture, it might be better to consider other alternatives. Website is currently developed in C# / ASP.Net (Web Forms) Are there any recommendations to some open-source delivery networks and/or external hosted advert delivery networks? Personally I've used Google's DFP, however sometimes it is not so easy to get a Google AdSense account approved, especially while developing a new website and it not yet being launched. Not sure if this is the best place to ask this kind of question!

  When I search for Ride On + my site's name, I see that it's indexed. But when I search for Green Horse + my site's name, I don't see my site appearing in the results anywhere! Here's my code: <td><a href="#" title="Green Horse Ride">Ride On</a></td> Does this mean that title attributes are not indexed/shown by Google at all? What is better to use, alt? What are the other alternatives except title and alt?
