  A few links you may be interested in. This week was a big week for Microsoft with the unveiling of the developer story for Windows 8 Metro-style apps. The recorded sessions are available on channel9. Note that you can use C++ AMP in both Metro and desktop apps, and in fact even on Windows 7. Visual Studio 11 Developer Preview is now available. To download it, here is a link to a link plus context. As I previously shared, I was also speaking at BUILD on C++ AMP, and here is a direct link to that recording. Kate Gregory has started a book on C++ AMP and she has graciously shared the first 1-2 draft chapters for free online – get the link from her blog post which is also where you can leave her feedback.   I have been having rather slow boot on Ubuntu 12.04. Lately, I tried to figure out the reason and it seems to be the network connection which does not get connected and requires multiple attempts.   Has anyone implemented transport rules on a live@edu(or whatever Microsoft is calling it these days) instance to reject the delivery of messages that include SSN's? I see how to set up transport rules in Exchange 2007, and even how to do it in the Windows Live Admin page, though the rules there don't seem to allow for regexes, can anyone confirm this? If this is the case has anyone ever connected Powershell to a live@edu instance to implement the code found at the bottom of this page: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997187.aspx What I really need is a concise how-to.

• Code Contracts and Pex at MSDN Live 2010

  One of the 6 sessions I and Mikael Nitell is running on MSDN Live 2010 here in Norway is about Code Quality, and part of that session goes through the use of Code Contracts and Pex.  Both fantastic tools ! They can be used togethers, but are also completely independent from each other, and can be used as a single Code Contracts  has to downloaded separately from VS 2010 (works also on VS 2008).   Start looking at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/devlabs/dd491992.aspx . This download is a free download.   Code Contracts originates form the ideas of Bertrand Meyer – Design by Contract, take a look here. Pex is found on the MSDN Subscription download, so it requires an active MSDN Subscription. • The one feature that would make me invest in SSIS 2012

  This week I was invited my Microsoft to give two presentations in Slovenia. My presentations went well and I had good energy and the audience was interacting with me. When I had some time over from networking and partying, I attended a few other presentations. At least the ones who where held in English. One of these was "SQL Server Integration Services 2012 - All the News, and More", given by Davide Mauri, a fellow co-worker from SolidQ. We started to talk and soon came into the details of the new things in SSIS 2012. All of the official things Davide talked about are good stuff, but for me, the best thing is one he didn't cover in his presentation. In earlier versions of SSIS than 2012, it is possible to have a stored procedure to act as a data source, as long as it doesn't have a temp table in it. In that case, you will get an error message from SSIS that "Metadata could not be found". This is still true with SSIS 2012, so the thing I am talking about is not really a SSIS feature, it's a SQL Server 2012 feature. And this is the EXECUTE WITH RESULTSETS feature! With this, you can have a stored procedure with a temp table to deliver the resultset to SSIS, if you execute the stored procedure from SSIS and add the "WITH RESULTSETS" option. If you do this, SSIS is able to take the metadata from the code you write in SSIS and not from the stored procedure! And it's very fast too. Let's say you have a stored procedure in earlier versions and when referencing that stored procedure in SSIS forced SSIS to call the stored procedure (which can take hours), to retrieve the metadata. Now, with RESULTSETS, SSIS 2012 can continue in milliseconds! This is because you provide the metadata in the RESULTSETS clause, and if the data from the stored procedure doesn't match this RESULTSETS, you will get an error anyway, so it makes sense Microsoft has provided this optimization for us.

• Visual Studio Continued Excitement

  As you know Visual Studio 2012 RTM’d and then became available in August (Soma’s blog posts told you that here and here), and the VS2012 launch was earlier this month (Soma also told you that here). Every time a release of Visual Studio takes place I am very excited, since this has been my development tool of choice for almost my entire career (from many years before I joined Microsoft). I am doubly excited with this release since it is the second version of Visual Studio that I have worked on and contributed major features to, now that I’ve been in the developer division (DevDiv) for over 4 years. Additionally, I am very excited about the new era that VS2012 starts with VSUpdate for continued customer value: instead of waiting for the next major version of VS to get new features, there is new infrastructure to enable friction-free updates. The first update will ship before the end of this year, and you can read more about it at Brian’s blog post. I also noticed that a CTP of the first quarterly update is available to download here. In the last two months, the VS2012 family of products we all worked on in DevDiv shipped, coinciding with the end of the Microsoft financial/review year, and naturally followed by a couple of organizational changes (e.g. see Jason’s blog post)… On a personal level, this meant that I was very lucky to have an opportunity present itself to me that I simply could not turn down, so I grabbed it! I’ll still be working on Visual Studio, but not in the Parallel Computing part of the C++ team; instead I will be PM-leading the VS Diagnostics team… Stay tuned for details of what is coming in that space, in the VS updates and in the next major VS release, as I am able to share them… Comments about this post by Daniel Moth welcome at the original blog.

• Restore single users Exchange 2003 mailbox from backup

  I take weekly backups of exchange in full. I also take complete weekly backups of the entire server. It is a Server 2003 R2 with AD and Exchange 2003 all on one box. One users inbox has disappeared. She has 19000+ junk items now. It is possible the inbox got mixed into the junk. Regardless it is such a huge mess she is not going to go through all of that.... I want to restore he mailbox from the backup. I followed this MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823176 I had to use Method 3. I have a VM of Server 2003 R2 with exchange but I am having failures on the restore from NT backup. The backup log just states to check the application log.... Application log points to backup log... Only info Is failed to restore Only thing different is the computer name... The only error I can find is in the Application log. Information Store Database not found All others just say that the backup failed. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. UPDATE I have successfully proven I can restore the DB into a recovery storage group in my VM Unfortunately due to the actual account being on a different store I am unable to do the recovery... Error is The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed. The MAPI provider failed. Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store ID no: 8004011d-0512-00000000 Two questions QUESTION 1 Should I repeat my steps on the production exchange server in the recover storage group? then merge into her original account? I am just concerned with doing recovery like that on the live server.... QUESTION 2 Is there any way I can extract her .PST from my recovery VM and then import into her outlook? On the Recovery VM: I restored the raw DB from my full backup repaired it with ESEUTIL then mounted in the recovery store. Was thinking I could just repeat and mount in the main store on the VM? • Selecting a JAX-RS implementation for a new project

  I'm starting a new Java project which will require a RESTful API. It will be a SaaS business application serving mobile clients. I have developed one project with Java EE 6, but I'm not very familiar with the ecosystem, since most of my experience is on the Microsoft platform. Which would be a sensible choice for a JAX-RS implementation for a new project such as described? Judging by Wikipedia's list, main contenders seem to be Jersey, Apache CXF, RESTeasy and Restlet. But the Comparison of JAX-RS Implementations cited on Wikipedia is from 2008. My first impressings from their respective homepages is that: CXF aims to be a very comprehensive solution (reminds me of WCF in the Microsoft space), which makes me think it can be more complex to understand, setup and debug than what I need; Jersey is the reference implementation and might be a good choice, but it's legacy from Sun and I'm not sure how Oracle is treating it (announcements page doesn't work and last commit notice is from 4 months ago); RESTeasy is from JBoss and probably a solid option, though I'm not sure about learning curve; Restlet seems to be popular but has a lot of history, I'm not sure how up-to-date it is in the Java EE 6 world or if it carries a heavy J2EE mindset (like lots of XML configuration). What would be the merits of each of these alternatives? What about learning curve? Feature support? Tooling (e.g. NetBeans or Eclipse wizards)? What about ease of debugging and also deployment? Is any of these project more up-to-date than the others? How stable are them?

One of the advantages to Windows Azure Virtual Machines is that it is stored in a standard Hyper-V format – with the base hard-disk as a VHD. That means you can move a Virtual Machine from on-premises to Windows Azure, and then move it back again. You can even use a simple series of PowerShell scripts to do the move, or automate it with other methods. And this then leads to another very interesting option for deploying systems: you can create a server VHD, configure it with the software you want, and then run the “SYSPREP” process on it. SYSPREP is a Windows utility that essentially strips the identity from a system, and when you re-start that system it asks a few details on what you want to call it and so on. By doing this, you can essentially create your own gallery of systems, either for testing, development servers, demo systems and more. Whenever you deploy a system to Windows Azure Virtual Machines, you must meet certain password complexity requirements. However, when you build the machine locally and SYSPREP it, you might not choose a strong password for the account you use to Remote Desktop to the machine. In that case, you might not be able to reach the system after you deploy it. Once again, the key here is reading through the instructions before you start. • Cannot log in to the desktop on ubuntu 11.10?

  The problem is, I could log in under the terminal, i could ifup eth0, i could do anything I want in the terminal, but if I use ctrl+alt+f7 goto the gnome login screen, after I input the correct password, the system just send me back to same login screen again. I have created a new user, but it didn't work. I have change all the files under ~/ to jichao:jichao(which is my username) with chown -hR jichao:jichao /home/jichao, but it didn't work too. I searched the internet, somebody said I should see the logs under /var/log/gdm, but there is not a /var/log/gdm directory in my box. • TechEd 2010 Day Two – No SQL Server in Sight

  Today I worked the booth at TechEd 2010, manning the new “Surface” computer, which is just the coolest object on the planet. After that I didn’t attend a single SQL Server session – instead I’ve been frequenting SharePoint, Microsoft Office, and even the High-Performance Computing sessions. The reason is that I get really high quality SQL Server presentations at PASS, SQL Saturdays, and online from Microsoft and other vendors. While there are SQL Server sessions here (after all, I’m giving one of them!) I tend to try and see things that I don’t normally get to learn about. And the cross-pollination between those technologies and mine is fantastic.     I’ve even managed to go to an Entity Framework presentation for the developers. I actually have (a little) more respect for that technology – and I’ve modified my presentation to encompass more of that information. So whenever you have the chance, take a walk outside your comfort zone.   Hello. I have just installed Microsoft SQL Express from here: http://www.microsoft.com/Sqlserver/2005/en/us/express-down.aspx I need it because an example of some code I have uses it. My question is: How do I start using it? Which port it opens by default. All I have after installing it is this: I'm not asking for a full tutorial on how to admin MSSql, just a hint on what to do next. I have downloaded and tested in the past Oracle XE and test it with SQuirreL SQL client with out problems.

• WordPress is now nicely supported on SQL Server (and SQL Azure for that matter)

  WordPress is enormously popular for blogs and full websites thanks to an awesome eco system which has built up around it, the simplicity (relatively) of getting it up and running plus the flexibility to “bend it” in all sorts of directions. When I say bend, check out the following which are all WordPress sites My “back up blog” http://iupdateable.wordpress.com/  My groups “odd site” :) http://ubelly.com My favourite “cheap games” site http://www.frugalgaming.co.uk/  WordPress users typically run their sites on Linux and MySQL, although PHP (the language in which WordPress is written) can be happily run on Windows. Both fine technologies in their own right, but for me (and probably a fair few others) I would love to use WordPress but with the technologies I know best (aka Windows, IIS and SQL Server). However, that has proven to be actually rather tricky in practice to get working – until now. Earlier last month OmniTI released a patch for WordPress which provides SQL Server and SQL Azure support.  In parallel with that some fine folks inside Microsoft have also created http://wordpress.visitmix.com which contains information about running WordPress on the Microsoft platform with a particular focus on SQL Server and SQL Azure.  Top stuff!
