• Build .deb package from source, without installing it

  Suppose I have an installer program or source tarball for some program I want to install. (There is no Debian package available.) First I want to create a .deb package out of it, in order to be able to cleanly remove the installed program in the future (see Uninstalling application built from source, If I build a package from source how can I uninstall or remove completely?). Also, installing using a package prevents it from clobbering files from other packages, which cannot be guaranteed if you run the installer or sudo make install. Checkinstall From reading the answers there and elsewhere, I gather the usual solution is to use checkinstall to build the package. Unfortunately, it seems checkinstall does not prevent make install from clobbering system files from other packages. For example, according to Reverting problems caused by checkinstall with gcc build: I created a Debian package from the install using sudo checkinstall -D make install. [...] I removed it using Synaptic Package Manager. As it turns out, [removing] the package checkinstall created from make install tried to remove every single file the installation process touched, including shared gcc libraries like /lib64/libgcc_s.so. I then tried to tell checkinstall to build the package without installing it, in the hope of bypassing the issue. I created a dummy Makefile: install: echo "Bogus" > /bin/qwertyuiop and ran sudo checkinstall --install=no. The file /bin/qwertyuiop was created, even though the package was not installed. In my case, I do not trust the installer / make install to not overwrite system files, so this use of checkinstall is ruled out. How can I build the package, without installing it or letting it touch system files? Is it possible to run Checkinstall in a fakechrooted debootstrap environment to achieve this? Preferably the build should be done as a normal user rather than root, which would prevent the process from overwriting system files if it goes wrong.

ANativeWindow* window; }; android_app* mApplication; ... mApplication=&pApplication; And to initialize the App, we run the commands in the code: ANativeWindow_setBuffersGeometry(mApplication->window, 0, 0, lFormat); mSurface = eglCreateWindowSurface(mDisplay, lConfig, mApplication->window, NULL); Funny to say is that, the command ANativeWindow_setBuffersGeometry behaves as expected and works fine according to its definition, accepting all the parameters sent to it. But the eglCreateWindowSurface does no accept the parameter mApplication-window, as it should accept according to its definition. Instead, it looks for the following input: EGLNativeWindowType hWnd; mSurface = eglCreateWindowSurface(mDisplay,lConfig,hWnd,NULL); As an alternative, I considered to use instead: NativeWindowType hWnd=android_createDisplaySurface(); But debugger says: Function 'android_createDisplaySurface' could not be resolved Can someone tell if there is a way to convert mApplication-window? In a way that the data from the android_app get accepted to the window surface?

• PHP won't load php.ini

  I am racking my brain here and I must be doing something really stupid. I'm trying to setup PHP on Win2008 R2/IIS 7.5. I unpacked php538 into c:\php538 and renamed the php.ini-development to php.ini. Then i tried going to a command prompt and running: c:\php358\php -info I get: Configuration File (php.ini) Path => C:\windows Loaded Configuration File => (none)Scan this dir for additional .ini files => (none) Additional .ini files parsed => (none) Loaded Configuration File => (none) Scan this dir for additional .ini files => (none) Additional .ini files parsed => (none) I have tried using php5217. I tried putting php.ini in c:\windows. I tried creating the PHPRC envrionment variable and pointing it to c:\php358. Every time I have the same problem. PHP does not find or load the ini file. If I run: c:\php358\php -c php.ini -info Then it will load the file. But I shouldn't have to do this for PHP to find the file in the same directory, in the Windows directory, or using the environment variable, so I'm stumped. When I try to run PHP from IIS I get a 500 error and I can only assume at this time it is because it can't find and load the php.ini file correctly. I see similar questions on here, but none seem to address the problem I am having.

• Path is too long

  Bugged by the irritating "Path is too long after being fully qualified" error while running in the Development Fabric? The solution is pretty funny and not so obvious unfortunately. The culprit here is not your app, but the Development Fabric. The DevFab accumulates a lot of temporary junk comprising of local storage locations, cached binaries, configuration, diagnostics information and cached compiled web site content files over its lifetime. They are typically stored at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\dftmp. The Azure Tools will periodically clean this up, but some time you have to play janitor and take the law in your hands ;). The csrun.exe has quite a few tricks up its sleeve. One of them is the ability to clean the development fabric's temporary junk accumulated over time. You can do this by  running the Azure command prompt with elevated privileges and running csrun.exe /devfabric:shutdown and then csrun.exe /devfabric:clean If the problem still persists then the application directory structure could indeed be too long. A workaround to this is changing the Development Fabric temporary directory to point to a shorter path. The temporary directory path can be addressed by an environment variable _CSRUN_STATE_DIRECTORY. You can try setting its value to something like "C:\WA" or "C:\A" this will reduce some 25+ characters from your path. Do not forget to close Visual Studio and expressly shutdown the dev fab with csrun.exe /devfabric:shutdown (Under elevated privileges of course).   Written by Guest Blogger: Maureen Clifford, Sr Product Marketing Manager, Oracle The pendulum of the regulatory clock is constantly in motion, albeit often not in any particular rhythm.  Nevertheless, given what many insurers have been through economically, any movement can send shock waves through critical innovation and operational plans.  As pointed out in Deloitte’s 2012 Global Insurance Outlook, the impact of regulatory reform can cause major uncertainty in the area of costs.  As the reality of increasing government regulations settles in, the change that comes along with it creates more challenges in compliance and ultimately on delivering the optimum return on investment.  The result of this changing environment is a proliferation of compliance projects that must be executed with an already constrained set of resources, budget and time. Insurers are confronted by the need to gain visibility into all of their compliance efforts and proactively manage them. Currently that is very difficult to do as these projects often are being managed by groups across the enterprise and they lack a way to coordinate their efforts and drive greater synergies.  With limited visibility and equally limited resources it is no surprise that reporting on project status and determining realistic completion of these projects is only a dream. As a result, compliance deadlines are missed, penalties are incurred, credibility with key stakeholders and the public is jeopardized and returns and competitive advantage go unrealized. Insurers need to ask themselves some key questions: Do I have “one stop” visibility into all of my compliance efforts?  If not, what can I do to change that? What is top priority and how does that impact my already taxed resources? How can I figure out how to best balance my resources to get these compliance projects done as well as keep key innovation and operational efforts on track? How can ensure that I have all the requisite documentation for each compliance project I undertake? Dealing with complying with regulatory efforts is a necessary evil. Don't let the regulatory pendulum sideline your efforts to generate the greatest return on investment for your key stakeholders.

  I have been hearing a lot about the website See[Mike]Code. Basically, the site creates an interview url and a job candidate url and lets you see the potential programmer’s code (specifically .NET developer). Below is the candidate’s URL   Below is the interviewer url   So you might think, ah, this is a good thing. We can screen candidates cheaper and more efficiently. In reality, this is only a good thing if you want your programmer to develop using notepad.  I use the most efficient tools that exist to do my job. I would simply fire up VS2010 and type “for” and hit the tab key twice and get the following template.   I have no problem keeping MSDN/Google in one of my monitors. I spend time learning VS macros and using Aurora XAML/Expression to produce my XAML for WPF. Sure, I can write a for loop without using the VS Macro, but the real question is, “Why should I?”. My point being, if you really want to test a .NET programmer knowledge then fire up his native working environment and let him use the features of the IDE to develop the simple 10-line program. For a more sophisticated program, then give him 20 minutes and allow access to msdn/google. If the programmer cannot find at the right path then give him the boot.

• What are the reasons why Clojure is hyped and PicoLisp widely ignored?

  I recently discovered the Lisp family of programming languages, and it's definitely one of the more diverse and widespread families in the programming language world. I like Elisp because that most wonderful tool Emacs is an Elisp interpreter. But I was looking for one more Lisp dialect to learn and thought Clojure would be the obvious choice nowadays - until I discovered the well hidden gem PicoLisp. That must be the most intelligent programming environment I have ever seen, like taking the best ideas from Lisp and Smalltalk and adding performance and practicability - and the beauty of parsimony. There is even an Emacs-mode for it. PicoLisp must be the productivity world champion when it comes to building business applications with database and web-client - and that's a very common task. It seems that throwing more and more hardware cores at your PicoLisp application makes it faster and faster, and the database is very performant anyway. However, reactions to PicoLisp in in general mailing-lists etc. are almost hostile (envy?), and there is absolutely no hype and very little publicity (ie not one book published). Are there real justified reasons for this (except the vast amount of java-libs accessible by Clojure, I know that one)? Or is the mainstream it getting wrong again (see C vs Lisp, Java vs Smalltalk, Windows vs Linux) and will come to the conclusion 10 years later that the JVM was good as in between solution, but a really fast Lisp interpreter on multicore machines is much better and allows much cleaner concepts? PS 1: Please note: I'm not interested in Scheme or any Common Lisp dialect, although they might be fine languages. It's just PicoLisp vs Clojure. PS 2: another thing I like about PicoLisp is its similarity to Elisp in certain aspects (both are descendants from MacLisp?) - it's easier to learn two similar languages. There is so much "dynamic binding bashing" on the web, but two of the most appealing Lisp applications use it.

  I have heard some service providers (or cloud providers), hosting companies and such complain, criticize or even venture to call foul on Microsoft’s Azure VM Role.  The problem:  None of them have gone through the effort of truly understanding (or perhaps not wanting to know) what is going on there.  Many have jumped right into the “purist” definition of IaaS, or PaaS for that matter. Ok, Buck’s post is a true gem (my opinion) in the sense it gives you parallels of what the VM Role is and is not.  And it brings Hyper-V and SCVMM to the forefront explaining what it is and what it also offers to the IaaS Microsoft offers. Here is an excerpt of the summary, but please go on over to read his post it will clear a lot if you are wondering when and how to use the Windows Azure VM Role.   In this new world of social media, apps and mobile devices, we are all now getting impatient. Automatic updates have spoiled few of our habits. When a new feature is released everybody wants to immediately adopt the feature and start using it. Though this is true in the world of apps and smart phones, but it is still not possible in the developer’s world. When new features are around, before we start using it, we need to spend quite a lots of time to understand it and test it. Once we are sold on the feature we refer the feature to our manager and eventually the entire organization makes decisions on upgrading to use the new feature. Similarly, when the new feature of In-Memory OLTP was announced, pretty much every SQL Server DBA wanted to implement that on their server. Through the implementation of the feature is not hard, it is not that easy as well. One has to do proper research about their own environment and workload before implementing this feature. Microsoft has recently released a Case Study on In-Memory OLTP feature. Here is the abstract from the white paper itself. I/O latch can cause session delays that impact application performance. This white paper describes the procedures and common I/O latch issues when migrating to Hekaton in SQL Server 2014. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, a division of the Department of Interior, won a Carl E. Nelson Best Practices Award for their implementation of Oracle WebCenter and Oracle Content Management to provide an interactive social media environment to engage and inform their constituent communities. The BIA Citizen Portal provides all the services of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to the community of 564 federally recognized tribes that include over 1.9 million American Indians and Alaska Natives. This integration was achieved with the support of Oracle partner Mythics. The Charles Town Police Department integrated Oracle Content Management to integrate with and support their police evidence system. This integration was created in partnership with Oracle partner EDAC Systems Inc. Diane Hoppe of EDAC Systems Inc. was on hand to receive the award for Charles Town Police Department.   In my never-ending wandering of technical web sites, I've been encountering links to jsFiddle.net more and more. Why? Because it is an incredibly useful site: It is a great 'sandbox' to play in. You can test, modify and retest HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code. It is a great way to communicate technical issues and share code samples. There are four screen areas: Three inputs* and one output: The three inputs are: HTML CSS JavaScript The output is: The rendered result Here's a cropped screen shot: What am I thinking? Here's the actual page: Demo *There are other inputs. You can select the level of HTML you want to run against (HTM5, HTML4.01 Strict, etc). You can add various versions of JavaScript libraries (jQuery, MooTools, YUI, etc.). Many other options are available. If I wanted to share this code with someone manually, they would have to copy and paste three separate code chunks into their development environment. And maybe load some external libraries. Not many people are willing to make such an effort. Instead, with jsFiddler, they can just go to the link and click Run. Awesome. • My Optimized Adam &amp; Eve

  Today I had a few minutes in the evening to go over my original Adam and Eve code… what I wanted to see tonight was if I could optimize the code any further… which I was pretty sure could be done. Ultimately what I wanted to find from the experiment was a balance between optimized code an reusable code. On the one hand I can put everything into a single function and end up with a totally unusable function that is extremely compressed, which would have big comebacks when making modifications at a later stage. Alternatively I could have many single line functions that are extremely loosely coupled but sparsely spaced and so would almost be to fragmented to grok. Ultimately I found with my current iteration something that I consider readable, yet compressed. So here's step-by-step howto that can be used to generate webservice proxy from your *nix shell Create a dir in your scratch area : e.g. /tmp/<username>/genproxy Get build.xml file attached, save it in the dir above and change the properties defined in it to match your ws endpoint. More specifically you need to edit: proxy.wsdl - the path (either locally or URL) where WSDL file can be accessed from proxy.handler - the handler class proxy.package - the class package where the proxy will be generated Start a new shell session (out of the ADE view if you're using one) and set the environment needed for proxy generation using ant and Oracle WebServicesAssembler genProxy [1] $ setenv ORACLE_HOME /opt/jdev_local/10.1.3/ $ setenv PATH $ORACLE_HOME/ant/bin:$PATH Note that the above env setup is needed even if you already have ORACLE_HOME set and ant utiliy available in your PATH. That way you'll be sure the proxy will be generated using the same libraries your jdeveloper is using in its wizard Generate proxy $ cd /tmp/<username>/genproxy $ ant genproxy And voila, the proxy files should be available in ./src directory.
