  I installed MacPorts on OS X 10.5 and I found out that when I connect to the computer using SSH and use mc - Midnight Commander - the HOME and END keys do not work. I have to mention that I'm using putty and I am able to use the keyboard very well on Linux machines like Fedora, Ubuntu,... Here is putty keyboard configuration (a configuration I found to be optimal over time): Backspace key: 127 Home/End keys: Standard Function keys: Xterm R6 Cursor keys: Normal Numpad: normal Terminal type string: xterm-color I'm looking for a command line solution/script that does these changes, this make much easier to create a prepare OS script for configuring a new OS.

  I'm making a simple 2D game for Android using the Unity3D game engine. I created all the levels and everything but I'm stuck at making the game over/retry menu. So far I've been using new scenes as a game over menu. • How to "ignore" username and password prompt in net use

  I have at the moment a logon.cmd script, that I'm using to map network drives to the users profile. It looks like this: ::Onboarding net use m: /delete net use m: \\BOB\onboarding ::Bookings net use n: /delete net use n: \\BOB\bookings ::Accounts net use j: /delete net use j: \\BOB\accounts It works fine up until it gets up to a folder that the current user cannot access, it then asks for a username and password instead of erroring and continuing. Notes: This very script used to work on another Samba PDC network, but I've moved it over to another server (Still Samba PDC) and now its breaking. Is there anyway for it to ignore the username/password prompt and just continue?

• chmod -R 777 /. - RHEL 5.5

  A shell script testing went bad and it issued chmod -R 777 /. to the system, instead of chmod -R 777 ./ and as expected it wiped the critical meta data. We have turned off the system and it will not function properly the next time it is turned on. I am told that rpm --setperms -a rpm --setugids -a should atleast fix the permission of the packages maintained by rpm. Is it worth doing? And is there any script available which will copy the permission from an identical system? To atleast get the box working. The Box is running RHEL5.5 Thanks!

• Using PowerShell, in Active Direcotry, how would I change all the DNS A records that have a given IP to a new IP?

  We've been moving data centers and I have a lot of old records that were not correctly but in DNS as CNAME records, but A records that have a direct IP (e.g. 192.168.100.n) and they're all moving to a new subnet (10.19.100.n). I just need to write a powershell script to change all those records. I found this site: http://www.indented.co.uk/index.php/2008/12/30/administering-microsoft-dns-in-powershell/ and from it I made this simple script: $dnsServer = "meldc2" $scope = New-Object Management.ManagementScope("\\$dnsServer\root\MicrosoftDNS") $path = New-Object Management.ManagementPath("MicrosoftDNS_Zone") $options = New-Object Management.ObjectGetOptions($Null,[System.TimeSpan]::MaxValue, $True) $ZoneClass= New-Object Management.ManagementClass($scope,$path,$options) $Zones = Get-WMIObject -Computer $dnsServer -Namespace "root\MicrosoftDNS" -Class "MicrosoftDNS_Zone" $Zones | Get-Member foreach($Z in $Zones) { $Z | Select-Object Name,DsIntegrated,ZoneType,Reverse,Data } but that only gets me a listing of root zones. I don't understand how to iterate over all the entries in each of the zones. Also, all the examples I've seen involve adding new zones, but there aren't any examples I can find on modifying existing A records.

• Memeory Leak in Windows Page file when calling a shell command

  I have an issue on our Windows 2003 x64 Build Server when invoking shell commands from a script. Each call causes a "memory leak" in the page file so it grows quite rapidly until it reaches the maximum and the machine stops working. I can reproduce the problem very nicely by running a perl script like for ($count=1; $count<5000; $count++) { system "echo huhu"; } It is independent of he scripting language as the same happens with lua: for i=1,5000 do os.execute("echo huhu") end I found somebody describing the same issue with php at http://www.issociate.de/board/post/454835/Memory_leak_occurs_when_exec%28%29_function_is_used_on_Windows_platform.html His solution: Firewall/Virus Scanner does not apply, neither are running on the machine. We can also reproduce the issue on other Developer Machines running XP 64, but not on XP 32 Bit. The guilty guy for the allocation is C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs which runs all the basic Windows services. Does anybody know the issue and how to resolve it ?

• Video game "Gish" will only launch from command line

  Platform: Lubuntu 11.10 x64 Program: Gish When I try to launch Gish from the command line (/opt/gish/gi.sh), there are no problems. But when I try to launch it from the LXDE menu, it will not start. Contents of /usr/share/applications/gish.desktop: [Desktop Entry] Categories=Game;ActionGame;AdventureGame;ArcadeGame; Exec=/opt/gish/gi.sh Path=/opt/gish Icon=x-gish Terminal=false Type=Application Name=Gish I tried changing Terminal=false to Terminal=true to debug it, but then I just got a blank terminal, and the game didn't start. Edit: Here is some additional information, as requested by Eliah Kagan below: I tried editing /usr/share/applications/gish.desktop, as recommended, but it had no effect However, ~/.xsession-errors contained the following error: [: 8: x86_64: unexpected operator ./gish_32: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 I think there's a problem with the /opt/gish/gi.sh shell script. This is its contents: cd /opt/gish/ MACHINE_TYPE=`uname -m` if [ ${MACHINE_TYPE} == 'x86_64' ]; then ./gish_64 else ./gish_32 fi I'm not too familiar with Bash, so hopefully someone else can point out the error. I have a 64-bit machine. I think that when the script is run from the command line, it's properly launching the 64-bit version (/opt/gish/gish_64), but when it's run from the LXDE menu, it's launching the 32-bit version (/opt/gish/gish_32), which is causing the libGL.so.1 error. However, this may be related to my libGL.so.1 problems with 2 other games.

• How to handle editing a large file for a non-technical user

  I have a client who is given a tab delimited .txt file containing hundreds of thousands of rows. I have a user story as follows: As a user I want to take the text file and add a new value at the end of each line which contains the concatenated value of two of the columns. for example if the file read text_one text_two I need to output the following (preferably to a .txt file) text_one text_two text_onetext_two My first approach was to ask the vendor supplying the file to do the concatenation before providing the file, the easiest way to solve a problem is to eliminate it right? however they are very uncooperative and have point blank refused. I've looked at building a simple javascript application that does this client side so a non-technical user could select the file using a file selector. This approach has a few problems The file could be over a GB in size and so can't be loaded straight into memory, I've tried and the browser crashes There is no means to write a file in javascript so I'd need to output the content to the screen and have the user save it (somehow) I was thinking if I could get around the filesize limitations I could just output the edited content to the page and have the user save the page as a .txt file, however I think there is a better way than using javascript that will still accommodate the users lack of technical know-how. Please consider this question to be stack agnostic, but bear in mind that a nice little shell script or python script would be deemed unsuitable for a non technical user unless there is a way of "packaging" it nicely for a non-technical user. Updates The file is too large to open in excel. The process needs to be run weekly, but it doesn't require scheduling or automation...(yet)

  This is easily done for a single file type, as answered in How to associate a file type within Wine with a native application?, by creating a .reg for the desired filetype. But this is for AVI only. I use some wine apps (uTorrent, Soulseek, Eudora, to name a few) that can launch a wide range of files. Email attachments, for example, can be JPG, DOC, PDF, PPS... its impossible (and not desirable) to track down all possible file types that one may receive in an email or download in a torrent. So I neeed a solution to be more generic and broad. I need the file association to honor whatever native app is currently configured. And I want this to be done for all file types configured in my system. I've already figured out how to make the solution generic. Simply replacing the launched app in .reg for winebrowser, like this: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf] @="PDFfile" "Content Type"="application/pdf" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PDFfile\Shell\Open\command] @="C:\\windows\\system32\\winebrowser.exe \"%1\"" Ive tested this and it works correctly. Since winebrowser uses xdg-open as a backend, and converts my windows path to a Unix one, the correct (Linux) app is launched. So I need a "batch" updater to wine's registry, sort of a wine-update-associations script that I can run whenever a new app is installed. Maybe a tool that can: List all Mime Types types in my system that have a default, installed app associated Extract all the needed info (glob, mime type, etc) Generate the .REG file in the above format The tricky part is: i've searched a LOT to find info about how association is done in Ubuntu 10.10 onwards, and documentation is scarce and confusing, to say the least. Freedesktop.org has no complete spec, and even Gnome docs are obsolete. So far I've gathered 4 files that contain association info, but im clueless on which (or why) to use, or how to use them to generate the .reg file: ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list ~/.local/share/applications/miminfo.cache /usr/share/applications/miminfo.cache /etc/gnome/defaults.list Any help, script or explanation would be greatly appreciated! • Shooter in iOS and a visible Aim line before shooting

  I have to questions. I am trying to develop a game that is iOS but I did it first in my computer so I can tested there. I was able to must of it for PC but I am having a very hard time with iOS port The problem I do have is that I don't know how to shout in iOS.   I have been breaking my head for several days now trying to install Microsoft office 2010 through group policy. Unfortunately Microsoft decided it would be fun to release office without an MSI and so I either 1) need to create an msi for it or 2) need to install it through a logon script that would run the setup.exe from a network location. Any advise would be greatlly appreciated. I tried to create a script but even though I double click it and it runs properly, it does not seem to kick in when users log in or when the machine is turned on. Also is there an easy way to create an msi? thanks! -Ri

• Deleting MySQL rows causes lock table error

  I had a couple million rows to delete but they can't be deleted at once without this error ERROR 1206 (HY000): The total number of locks exceeds the lock table size So I wrote a script to delete 100,000 rows 10,000 at a time. It ran once but when I run it a second time I get the error on the first attempt to delete 10,000. The way I'm trying to delete the 10,000 rows is to use a delete statement that refers to all 2 million rows but I use a limit clause to affect only 10,000. I've tried adding an "unlock tables;" statement to the script before the first delete but that doesn't help. I still get the lock table error on the first delete. Any ideas how I can do this? Is there a way I can tell it NOT to lock records? I can make sure nothing else is accessing the table.

I am in no mans land as I am a developer and not a sys admin but I have to assume many roles. So I'm reaching out for help. Sometimes I will see hundreds of these 'C0000005' scriptengine errors in the event log in a matter of seconds and other times just a few times an hour. I googled this line 'ASP!CACTIVESCRIPTENGINE::GETAPPLICATION' and got nothing. Its like the function don't exist or something. I have spent many hours google-ing to no avail and am now turning to the experts on the forums. Thank you for your help

But it seems the other columns changed by relatively negligible amounts - how is this possible? Am I interpreting this wrong, or is some memory just not being accounted for in this output?

  I do quite a few presentations, and teach at the University of Washington, and also teach other classes. But I'm always learning from others how to help others learn. At events like TechEd I have access to some of the best speakers around, so I try to find out what they do that works. I attended a great session by allen White, in which he demonstrated a set of PowerShell scripts. He said that Dan Jones of the Microsoft Manageability team told him while he demonstrated a script he needed to provide some visual way to represent the process. Allen used one of the oldest visualizations around - a flowchart. It was the first time I'd seen one used to illustrate a PowerShell script, and it was very effective. I'm totally stealing the idea. All of us are teachers - we help others on our team understand what we're up to. Make sure you make notes for what you find effective in dealing with you, and then meld that into your own way of teaching. • Is it possible to keep nm-applet running between invocations of WM startup?

  I am using nm-applet to interface with NetworkManager, running xmonad as a window manager. My X sessions (including nm-applet) are set up with a /usr/local/bin/xmonad.start script. My question is, how can I keep nm-applet running in the background as long as X is running, but not necessarily xmonad? As mentioned above, it is being started with xmonad (and dying with it when xmonad is restarted, etc). I am using gdm to manage my X sessions, and I'm running 10.10. Where's a good place to start nm-applet to suit my particular needs? I need to remove it from the control of xmonad, but don't know where to start it otherwise. Any help, tips, etc appreciated. Edit: problem seems to be with how I have integrated xmonad.
