  • Definition of the job titles involved in a software development process.

    I have seen many job titles for people involved in a software development process, but never found a consensus about they mean. I know many of them are equivalent, and found some other questions about that here in SO, but I would like to know your definitions and comments about them. I want not only to know if there is really a consensus, but also to know if what I suppose to be a Software Architect, is really a Software Architect, and so on. The job titles I mean are: Developer; System Analyst; Programmer; Analyst Programmer; Software Engineer; Software Architect; Designer; Software Designer; Business Manager; Business Analyst; Program Manager; Project Manager; Development Manager; Tester; Support Analyst; Please, feel free to add more titles to this list in your answers.   • If I Design a CPU Can I Get it Realized in Hardware at a Reasonable Cost?

    I want to design a CPU and possibly memory and other hardware. I could do this with a hardware description language. Once I do this is it possible for me to send my designs to a manufacturer who will realize the design in hardware and send back to me the CPU(s) ? Can it be done at a reasonable cost?   • Is there a difference between installing an application via Ubuntu Software Center or a terminal?

    I would like to ask a very basic question but I have never thought about it before. Well, when someone installs an application from terminal, he has to add the repository first, right? On the other side, when someone installs an application from the Ubuntu Software Center, is the repository then added automatically? I am asking those questions to figure out this: When I run update and then upgrade, will this application be upgraded or not? Is the result same in two options?

However, I've seen quite a few cases where "quick-and-dirty" \ "brute-force" \ "copy-paste" programming appeared to give decent results quicker, and cheaper. This appears especially in cases where time to market is more critical then maintenance overhead. Is there a correlation between the quality of the development process and techniques and the quality of the product?

    hi we have a cross-platform middleware product which we typically end up customizing/bug fixing on a per client basis. In some cases, providing updates as often as once/twice per week. We have a lot of trouble efficiently managing and releasing the updates to our clients. I've done some digging, but I can't find anything to specifically address this problem.   • How can I transfer photo's from my Kodak camera that normally would use KODAK EASYSHARE Software?

    Normally I would plug my camera into my Windows XP pc, and the software would auto start, and transfer the files to a set location. I need to be able to perform the same or similar function on my PC installed with Ubuntu 10.04 (LTS). I would like to plug the camera in (USB), and then be able to select the files I want. At the moment, the camera does not seem to recognise the PC. I do not want to rely on the Windows PC anymore.

    The only thing stopping me from making ubuntu 12.04 my main os is that a lot of programs I use on windows 7 and mac aren't available for download on ubuntu. Why don't popular software programs like photoshop or world of warcraft support linux? Also - Would a company have to create the program (ex photoshop) for every possible distro(gentoo, arch linux, ubuntu, etc...), or would they just have to make one binary and it would work across all distros?
