• What tangible security are gained by blocking all but a few outgoing ports in a firewall

  Our current hardware firewall allows for blocking incoming and outgoing ports. We have two possibilities: Block certain troublesome ports (unsecured smtp, bittorrent, etc.) Block all but a few approved ports (http, https, ssh, imap-ssl, etc.) I see several downsides with option 2. Occasionally web servers are hosted on non-standard ports and we would have to deal with the resulting issues. Also, there is nothing preventing a malicious or unwanted service from being hosted on port 80, for instance. What are are the upsides?

• Routing to various node.js servers on same machine

  I'd like to set up multiple node.js servers on the same machine (but listening on different ports) for different projects (so I can pull any down to edit code without affecting the others). However I want to be able to access these web apps from a browser without typing in the port number, and instead map different urls to different ports: e.g. 45.23.12.01/app - 45.23.12.01:8001. I've considered using node-http-proxy for this, but it doesn't yet support SSL. My hunch is that nginx might be the most suitable. I've never set up nginx before - what configuration do I need to do? The examples of config files I've seen only deal with subdomains, which I don't have. Alternatively, is there a better (stable, hassle-free) way of hosting multiple apps under the same IP address?

• Can't connect using Jail SFTP account

  I've been following this tutorial "Limiting Access with SFTP Jails on Debian and Ubuntu" and whilst I've had no errors setting it up, I've had issues on Ubuntu 10.04LTS logging in as a user on a virtualhost. I've changed my SSH port to 22022, and enter all the credentials when attempting to login. I ran these commands to add a user to the virtualhost: # useradd -d /srv/www/[domain] [username] # passwd [username] # usermod -G filetransfer [username] # chown [username]:[username] /srv/www/[domain]/public_html I should add that this is the only time I've setup the user they have no other /home directories or such. The directory that does exist is at /srv/www/example.com/public_html When I try using a desktop package such as cyberduck to login to the site, I keep getting a "Login failed with this username or password". I am completely lost as what to do next... The reason why I'm trying this method is because I want my clients to use SFTP and not FTP to upload files to their websites. Any help or direction is appreciated.

  I need to re-connect the network to a small old outbuilding that hasn't been used in several years. I have to use the existing 62.5um multi-mode fiber run. This end of the fiber is already connected. For the end in the building, I was looking at this pair: http://www.tp-link.com/products/productDetails.asp?class=switch&content=spe&pmodel=TL-SM311LM http://www.tp-link.com/products/productDetails.asp?class=&content=spe&pmodel=TL-SL2210WEB If you look at the sfp first (first link), it's listed at 1.25Gpbs. That's odd, because IIRC the fiber should really only do 1Gbps. It's also supposed to work with the switch I posted (2nd link), but the gbic port on the switch also only shows 1Gbps. What am I missing here?

• Can't communicate using PuTTY, but can with Termite

  I'm trying to establish a serial connection to a peripheral from my PC's RS-232 port. Pretty simple stuff, and I've had not trouble doing it with countless peripherals before. And yet when I configure PuTTY to the right baud rate, stop bits, etc. I'll type in "*IDN?", press enter, and the unit won't reply. After going over my settings over and over again, I decided to try another terminal program, Termite. This time it worked like a charm. What puzzles me, and what I'm trying to figure out by posting this question, is why Termite would work when PuTTY did not despite the fact that they both have the same settings. I have configured the virtual PC to use Shared Networking (NAT) I have disabled the firewall on the virtual windows XP The problem: I am unable to PING from Windows 2003 (the host) to the Windows XP (virtual) I do have normal traffic from the virtual to the internet Could this problem be related to routing?   for work we have a remote dedicated server to run our webservice that also runs our email services, at home(comcast residential internet) i cannot send mail using the dedicated server's SMTP, comcast spits back a error saying i can only use their SMTP server for sending mail at work(comcast business internet) we can use our dedicated server for sending mail with no problem so i set up a box at work to forward smtp traffic, i'm new to all this networking stuff by the way i used delegate to forward smtp traffic, can someone point me in the right direction on how to use this program(delegate) to fix our issue the delegate command i used to test is : delegated -P25 SERVER="smtp://dedicated.server.com:25" PERMIT=":::" -v i also opened up port 25 on the router so it points to my boxes ip are there any other ways to fool comcast into thinking im using my works ip to send mail, my coworkers and i are unable to send mail from home for some time now thanks

I have connected both switches via 2 fiber cables and want to use trunking. The problem I am having. Sometimes I get a an issue when none of the switches cannot talk with each other, nor the devices, sometime they can. The problem is irregular and no patten can be determined The statistics shows that when the switches does not work, they have RX errors If I remove one to the GBIC connections, then everything works as normal.] Question Does anyone have a solution for this please?   I'm developing a web application that connects to an IMAP mailbox and fetches emails as part of it's functionality. However now that I've put the app on my web hosts server I'm getting the following error: Cannot connect to Gmail: Can't connect to gmail-imap.l.google.com,993: Connection timed out After checking with my hosting provider they told me outgoing connections on port 993 are blocked. Is there anyway around this? Otherwise I need to upgrade to a dedicated server :S

• Radeon HD 5770 - DisplayPort Problem

  I am trying to set up 3 monitors with the Radeon HD 5770 I recieved a few days ago. I have read that I can use 2 DVI ports and an active DisplayPort adapter for a third DVI monitor. I have purchased this adapter: http://www.accellcables.com/products/DisplayPort/DP/dp_dvid.htm I have the two normal DVI monitors working, but when I try to extend the display to the third, I get a message saying the system has detected a problem with the connection through the display port which may limit resolution/refresh rate. I know that all the cables are fine, I have replaced the adapter, the monitors all work, I have tried different monitors through the adapter, and even nothing but the adapter, but I cannot get any monitor to work using it. I am trying to use 2 Dell monitors and an Acer. Have I overlooked something? Is there a compatibiliy issue I missed? Any suggestions as to what I could try? Thanks in advance.

  I have a Linksys WRT54GL router that I don't need anymore, since I had to buy a 3G capable router (Dovado 3GN). As I only have a 3G connection at home, I want to optimize it as much as possible. I want to setup a caching DNS server, including some blacklisting of ad domains. The router currently runs the DD-WRT firmware. Is it possible to use this router as an ordinary computer, running only a DNS server, disabling all other features such as DHCP, WLAN, etc? Connecting it to my other router, should I simply run a cable into the WAN-port of the Linksys router?

• Belking Wireless Router unable to connect to internet although wireless connection is working

  I have a Belkin Basic N150 Wireless router. I'm trying to set up wireless connection using the wired ports my university has provided in my hostel room. Usually, when I connect my laptop using a LAN wire through the port, my settings are like IP: 10.5.130.X Subnet Mask: 255.255.254.0 Default Gateway: 10.5.130.250 DNS Server: 10.200.1.11 and I'm able to connect to the internet. Now instead of connecting my laptop directly, I've connected the lan wire to the Belkin Wireless Router, set the router as "Use as an Access Point" and in the IP field, I've put up 10.5.130.1. Now I've set the IP of my system manually to 10.5.130.3. I'm able to connect to the wi-fi but I'm still not able to connect to the internet. What am I missing?

• Computer not displaying anything

  The computer in question worked last week. It's brand new, never been connected to the internet, up-to-date parts, etc. Last week, I installed some 3D software on it, then shut it down and waited for the license files that arrived this week. I've done this to 4 other PCs with the same hardware and software. I've tried: Hooking it up to 3 different monitors using different video cables 2 other graphics cards and a handful of other things like switching which port it's plugged into before and after a restart. I have the driver disc, and a windows reinstallation disc, but they won't do me any good because no display at all for any interval of time. All the fans are moving: psu, gfx, cpu etc, so I don't believe it's a power issue. Here are the specs I know of: 4GB RAM 8800 GTX 700w PSU Intel dual core (not sure of model) Anyways, I'm open to ideas.

• Mac won't boot into safe mode

  Mac boots fine normally, except when in safe mode. Holding down shift when booting gets me to the progress bar on the grey screen. Progress bar gets about half way before mac reboots. I modified nvram boot-args to get a better look: sudo nvram boot-args="-x -v" It definitely gets through fsck, skips loading kernel extensions (since it's in safe mode), does something with the network interfaces, then this is the last thing it wips through... • Numlock on when computer is off

  I have a desktop PC which was recently moved. Since moving I've noticed that even while the PC is turned off (but wall socket turned on) the NumLock LED on the keyboard is on. It may have been doing this before the move, but I've only noticed it now. Maybe it matters that the keyboard is connected via a shared mouse/keyboard PS/2 port and I'm running Windows 7. I've not checked whether the LEDs are just keeping whatever state they were in when I turned the PC off but will do this if that information could be relevant. Why does the led stay on when the PC is turned off and how can I prevent this?

  Great to find this forum full of knowledge. I was wondering if anyone knew of an application or other work around to create a virtual input device in windows. I have a IP cam app on my android phone, that I would like to use for skype webcam. It comes with a port for getting the video feed into skype, and that works great. However, the only audio available, is a OGG stream. Both video and audio work great with media players such as VLC etc, but ot with skype, since skype only works with windows input devices. Is there such software outthere, in which I could simply name my audio stream address, and pipe that to a virtual input device to allow skype to find it?

• send outgoing email via postfix from mail client

  I have installed postfix on my ubuntu that is hosted on digitalocean. What I want to do is. With my smtp server setup, I want to use it to send mail from my email client. I don't need to receive, I just need to send. I can telnet example.com 25 successfully, I received the email in my inbox, but when I tried using in a email client. smtp: example.com:25 user: smtp1user password: smtp1userpassword I get an error that says "Server doesn't respond. Try changing the port." I dont know how to proceed.
