• Can't read dvd in ubuntu 12.04

  My laptop has xubuntu 12.04 installed and I can't read dvds burned in my dvd recorder. To read my dvds, I had to use a external USB dvd driver (in xubuntu). • Switching To Ubuntu 14.04 from Windows 8.1

  everyone i am newto these linux stuffs. Currently i'm a user of Windows8.1 . When windows 8 was roling out i was like i'm never going to leave and will be always stick to windows8 but now i think it's time to switch linux because being in windows forever i don't think i can do something very good .I wanted to be OpenSource :) . So i really dont have any idea about linux . For me the best distro is Ubuntu and Kubuntu offcourse the latest release . So what i'm afraid of switching to linux is its compability .The compatibility i'm talking about is with the hardware's and driver's . For eg sometime after fresh install of windows we need to install the display,usb and wifi drivers to function . For some computer or brands those driver's are hard to find and i can't even think of linux how hard are they to find if it needs installing drivers. So my main question is that do i need to install the drivers for my wifi adapters display and some other stuffs or the distro i choosed i.e Ubuntu 14.0.4 consists of those dirvers and what about the 64 and 32bit . My machines is 64bit aso do i need to install the 64bit one . I mean i know the advantages of installing the 64 bit one but like windows is it kinda hard to find softwares for the 64 bit one . Or the 32 bit is recommended . And Yes I will be highly appreciated for the answers to my questions . Thank You :)

• Weird internet connection issue on Ubuntu 14.04

  I have an old Gateway PC with Windows 7 installed alongside the original (XP, I think?). A while ago my friend walked me through and helped me install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside the others because my Win7 was having issues with the display driver (it would unexpectedly crash while trying to watch videos on YouTube or other places). And I can't update it because the original computer settings are for XP or something, not Win7. :( We recently switched from AT&T U-Verse to Comcast. I would have stayed with Ethernet, but somehow the adapter I have wouldn't connect to Comcast's thing during their installation. So I was given a wireless USB adapter. It worked fine, up until the last few days. It's not a problem on Win7 (using it right now). Connection's strong, things load. On Ubuntu though, it SAYS it connects even before I login to my account, but when I login and bring up Firefox, it will load the homepage, and maybe one or two other pages I venture to before suddenly just... endlessly trying to load the page. I would normally go in and manually select 'disconnect' from the connections options menu to refresh/restart it like I've done a few times already. But lately, it won't respond, and then a little while later an error message comes up saying the request timed out/failed. Restarting my computer doesn't help it. The other weird thing is that I've noticed the signal (when it's actually working properly before the last few days) is comparitively weaker than when I'm on Win7. But my location doesn't change. It's the same computer, same connection.

• Ubuntu 14.04 install on hardware with RAID

  I've just built a new machine using an ASUS Mobo with 8GB of RAM and set up RAID 10 with 4 new HDD. I want to install Ubuntu 14.04 on it and so far have tried to do so 3 times with no luck. The installation seems to work fine but after it has finished it restarts and all I get is a black screen. Is there something I am missing? I've completed the install on other machines before without issue I just never tried it on a machine with RAID set up.

• Trouble installing Ubuntu.

  I have a blank 1TB hard drive that I have run ubuntu on before. I recently formatted it and am trying to reinstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on there. Using the Universal USB installer and the 64-bit iso file, I booted up my computer with only my 1TB hard drive connected. I go through the installation process normally, until I restart my computer at the end. Once restarted, I start to experience the problem deal with here. When I run it normally, it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor. When I select the "Recovery Mode" option, a bunch of lines scroll across the screen, the last of which is "hostap_pci: Registered netdevice wifi0". It then stops there with a blinking cursor. When I follow the instructions on the page I linked to (replacing "quiet splash" with "nomodeset") and bunch of lines scroll through after I press Ctrl+x. The last line displayed is Adding 8386556k swap on /dev/sda5. Priority:-1 extents:1 across: 8386556k It then stops there with a blinking cursor. How do I fix this problem?

• Ubuntu - Ruby Daemon script creates two processes - sh and ruby - PID file points at sh, not ruby

  The PID file for a ruby process I have running as a daemon is getting the wrong PID. It appears that running /etc/init.d/sinatra start creates two processes - sh and ruby, and the PID that ends up in the PID file is that of the sh process. This means that when I then run /etc/init.d/sinatra stop or /etc/init.d/sinatra restart, it is killing sh and leaving the ruby process still running. I'd like to know a) why is my script launching two processes - sh and ruby, and not just ruby, and b) how do I fix it to just launch ruby? Details of the setup: I have a small Sinatra server set up on an ubuntu server, running as a daemon. It is set to automatically at server startup run a script named sinatra in /etc/init.d that launches the a control script control.rb, which then runs a ruby daemon command to start the server. • How to Setup Ubuntu Mail Server with Google Apps?

  I have a domain, let's call it foobar.com. All of the MX records for foobar.com point to Google's mail servers because I am using Google Apps for your domain to manage it. It's great because everyone gets all the advantages of GMail, but our e-mail addresses aren't @gmail.com. I also have a server. Primarily, it's a web server, but it also serves other things. One of the things it serves is the web site for foobar.com and also sites for various virtual hosts such as shop.foobar.com and forum.foobar.com. The server is running Ubuntu 8.04, because I like using LTS releases in production. The thing is, there are various applications running on the server that need the ability to send out emails. Various applications, like the cron jobs, send me e-mails in case of errors. Some of the web applications need to send e-mail to users when they forget their passwords, to confirm new registered users, etc. Lastly, it's nice to be able to send e-mail from the command line using the mail command, or mutt. How can I setup the mail on the web server to go through the Google apps mail servers? I don't need the web server to receive mail, though that would be cool. I do need it to be able to send mail as any legitimate address @foobar.com. That way the forum application can send mails with [email protected] in the from field, and the ecommerce application will have [email protected] in the from field. Also, by sending the mail through the Google servers, we can avoid a lot of the problems with the e-mails being blocked by various spam filters on the web. Google's SMTP servers are trusted a lot more than mine would be. I'm pretty good with administering Linux systems, but I am absolutely brain dead when it comes to e-mail. I need step by step directions from beginning to end on how to set this up. I need to know every thing to install, and every single change to the configuration files that is necessary. I have tried following various howtos and guides in the past, but none of them were quite right. Either they didn't work at all, or they offered a configuration that is not what I wanted. • amazon ec2 ubuntu with gitlab and nginx - cant load?

  Ok, so I've spooled up an Amazon EC2 server running Ubuntu, and then followed the instructions below to install GitLab; http://doc.gitlab.com/ce/install/installation.html The only step I've not been able to complete is running the following check on the status; sudo -u git -H bundle exec rake gitlab:check RAILS_ENV=production I get the following error; rake aborted! Errno::ENOMEM: Cannot allocate memory - whoami Which I presume is becuase my EC2 is just running a free tier setup, so isn't that well spec'd. Regardless, I've been trying to access this through my browser. I've set up the elastic IP and pointed my domain at it (for the purpose of this, lets say its git.mydom.co.uk). Doing a whois on this domain shows me its pointing to the right place. For some reason though, I get the "Oops, Chrome could not connect to git.mydom.co.uk". Now - for a period of time I was getting the Nginx holding page (telling me I still needed to perform configuration). This though disappeared after removing the default file from /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/ (after reading this could be issue on a troubleshooting page). Since then, I've had nothing, even when I symlinked the file back in from /sites-available. I've tried changing the owner of the git.mydom.co.uk file sat inside /sites-enabled and /sites-available to www-data, as suggested here, but I could only change the permission of the file in /sites-available, and not the symlinked one in /sites-enabled. • Confluence or apache on win server 2008 cant find scripts and images :(

  I am a newbie to both Tomcat and Apache. I have set the virtual hosts as described in Here. And JIRA works fine when i browse the URL jira.agmlab.com. However when i try to access Confluence(3.4.5) with confluence.agmlab.com the pages come in plain html, i can login and browse pages but there is no css or js so that my confluence pages look very ugly. what can possibly cause this and how to fix this? here is my virtual hosts definitions : # # Virtual Hosts # # If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your # machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Can it be something related with the permissions defined in Win Server 2008 ? maybe there is not enough rights (such as read execute ) in some users, directories ??

  I am writing a program to validate the following scenarios: Scenario 1: I am using the Random class from java.util. The random class will generate 10 letters from a-z and within 10 letter, minimum 2 letters must be a vowels. Scenario 2: When the player 1 and player 2 form a word from A-Z, he will score some points. There will be a score for each letter. I have already assigned the values for A-Z. • How to load the environment variables at boot time before X11 on Ubuntu Precise?

  Using Ubuntu Precise 64 bit, I'm facing a problem that I'm unable to solve and that I'll try to describe below: I'm using a console mode program (let's say abc) that uses Go, NodeJS, Java and Scala. • Ubuntu Server, 2 Ethernet Devices, Same Gateway - Want to force internet traffic through 1 device (or at least allow it to work!)

  I have a Ubuntu 10.04 Server with 2 ethernet devices, eth0 and eth1. eth0 has a static IP of 192.168.1.210 eth1 has a static IP if 192.168.1.211 The DHCP server (which also serves as the internet gateway) sits at 192.168.1.1. The issue I have right now is when I have both plugged in, I can connect to both IPs over SSH internally, but I can't connect to the internet from the server. If I unplug one of the devices (e.g. eth1), then it works, no problem. (Also, I get the same result when I run sudo ifconfig eth1 down). Question, how can I configure it so that I can have both devices eth0 and eth1 play nice on the same network, but allow internet access as well? (I am open to either enforcing all inet traffic going through a single device, or through both, I'm flexible). From my google searching, it seems I could have a unique (or not popular) problem, so haven't been able to find a solution. Is this something that people generally don't do? The reason I want to make use of both ethernet devices is because I want to run different local traffic services on on both to split the load, so to speak... Thanks in advance. • How do I make solr/jetty find the installed slf4j jars in Ubuntu 12.04?

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04's packaged Jetty in which I installed solr 4.3.1 (by copying the war file to /var/lib/jetty/webapps. When I start Jetty, I get this error: failed SolrRequestFilter: org.apache.solr.common.SolrException: Could not find necessary SLF4j logging jars. If using Jetty, the SLF4j logging jars need to go in the jetty lib/ext directory. The package libslf4j-java is installed, and the jars are in /usr/share/java: /usr/share/java/log4j-over-slf4j.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-api.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-jcl.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-jdk14.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-log4j12.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-migrator.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-nop.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-simple.jar but somehow, Jetty and/or Solr are not finding them. How do I make them find them? or how do I install some other jars where jetty/solr would find them?
