• JavaOne Russia: Great Line Up

  I'm (we're) in New York, a week of vacation. (Growing list of photos can be found here.) A week in Brooklyn, and around, flea markets, book stores, museums, music. One of several highlights will be seeing "Death of a Salesman" with Philip Seymour Hoffman in the main role, tomorrow. However, mentally, at least partly, I'm in Moscow, at JavaOne Moscow, 17 & 18 April. http://www.oracle.com/javaone/ru-en/index.html I'm doing two items there, thankfully on the first day, I always think the sooner the better: Tuesday 12:30 - 13:15 -- Unlocking the Java EE 6 Platform (in the Keynote Hall) Tuesday 16:30 - 18:15 -- Rapid Corporate Desktop Development (in HOL Room) Several speakers I'm looking forward to seeing there include Bert Ertman who will be talking about Spring/Java EE 6 migration, Dalibor Topic talking about Lambda expressions in JDK 8, Arun Gupta with his Java EE 6 HOL (appears to be a partial overlap with my session), and various others. And I hope I will make it to Angela Caicedo's HOL on JavaFX. The whole program, which is available via the link above, indicates that many (dare I say "most"?) of the sessions will be using NetBeans in one way or another. Looks like it will be a great conference.

• TechEd 2010 Day Four: Learning how to help others learn

  I do quite a few presentations, and teach at the University of Washington, and also teach other classes. But I'm always learning from others how to help others learn. At events like TechEd I have access to some of the best speakers around, so I try to find out what they do that works. I attended a great session by allen White, in which he demonstrated a set of PowerShell scripts. He said that Dan Jones of the Microsoft Manageability team told him while he demonstrated a script he needed to provide some visual way to represent the process. Allen used one of the oldest visualizations around - a flowchart. It was the first time I'd seen one used to illustrate a PowerShell script, and it was very effective. I'm totally stealing the idea. All of us are teachers - we help others on our team understand what we're up to. Make sure you make notes for what you find effective in dealing with you, and then meld that into your own way of teaching. • Review of TechEd 2012 - so far

  Disclaimer: probably going to next years TechEd.  (but not 100% sure) As with most TechEd's, this is not one of the best - but it's not bad.  Some impressions so far: The food is not bad, through perhaps not as much choice as in previous years.  The snacks, while a bit limited, are at least available.  The alumni lounge is ok, through perhaps not as good as last years.  Wifi is a bit worse than previous years - not really working in the big room, and a bit sporadic in the rest of the building. The device seems to make a big difference - the iPad seems to connect the easiest, while the iPhone & Lumia 800 are really struggling.  The real problem is the content - not as developer focused as in previous years.  This shows up in a number of different ways, for example while there is a visual studio booth, there is not much sign of anybody from the language teams.  This is one of few TechEd's where I don't feel very surprised about anything - seen most of the developer stuff in previews. One example where I was surprised was the pre-conf on c++ - its been years since I did any c++, but based on that session perhaps I should start again. While there are sessions, I'm not finding my schedule very challenged. For each time-slot there only seems to 1, or rarely 2, interesting sessions.  The focus seems to be on windows 8, Azure and the phone, which while interesting (might give win8 a go), are not enough.

• Deploy multiple emails to email providers, but without showing favouritism

  We are currently developing a new email deployment system. We have the system currently configured so that it reads a record from the database and loads the email content and deploys it to the target. Now we want to move this over to multiple threads. That is easily done, except we then hit the email providers returning SMTP codes referring to "Too many connections", or "Deferred connection". The solution to this is to have a thread open up a connection to the email provider and deploy n emails and then disconnect. We have currently configured the application so that it will support these session based email deployments. The problem is this, the database table has multiple email addresses in and they aren't grouped by email provider because that will show favouritism. We need to be able to retrieve a set number of, i.e. Hotmail, emails (@hotmail.com, @hotmail.co.uk, @live.co.uk) so that we are reducing the number of connections to Hotmail and reducing the risks of getting the "Too many connections" error. We are at the point now where we have gone round and round in circles trying to get a solution, so I thought I'd throw it out there and see if anyone has any ideas? EDIT I would like to stress that this application is not used for spamming purposes.

• Extremely simple online multiplayer game

  I am considering creating a simple multiplayer game, which focuses on physics and can accommodate up to 30 players per session. Very simple graphics, but smart physics (pushing, weight and gravity, balance) is required. After some research I found a good java script (framework ??) called box2d.js I found the demo to be excellent. this is is kind of physics am looking for in my game. Now, what other frameworks will I need? Node.js?? Prototype.js?? (btw, I found the latest versoin of protoype.js to be released in 2010...?? is this still supported? Should I avoid using it?) What bout HTML 5 and Canvas? would I need them? websockets? Am a beginner in web programming + game programming world. but I will learn fast, am computer science graduate. (but no much web expeience but know essentionals javascript, html, css..). I just need a guiding path to build my game. Thanks

• Is chroot the right choice for my use case?

  Backstory: I am working on setting up a MineCraft server and want to allow admins to have ssh access to the MineCraft server console and appropriate mc server files, but not the whole system. The console provided by the minecraft server is only available to the user that launched the process. In addition, the admins will need terminal access to some basic cli tools such as wget, cp, mv, rm, and a text editor. Plan: I have already setup the ssh aspect of things, requiring pre-shared keys and whatnot. Setup a jailed environment in which all user activity will be contained. Setup user accounts. - The first user account will be the minecraft user. The minecraft user will start the MC server in a multiuser screen session and allow the other admins to attach to it. - Subsequent users should have their own /home directory for normal usage. Setup acl for the appropriate files to allow each user to edit the mc server files. No one will be doing system updates, nor will anyone be installing any programs, so I'll be the only user with sudo. The Issues: I don't want the ssh users to have access to the whole system. Users will still need to use wget or curl to update the mc server files. Is chroot the right tool for this use case, or is there something more appropriate for the job? I have no experience setting up a chroot environment and have found several tools to aid in this process. Jailkit seems to be the most robust, but it's not in the standard repos.

• Screencast not producing files

  I'm using Gnome 3 on 12.04 and trying to create a screencast. I start the screencast using the Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R shortcut and the red light appears in the bottom right corner. I go about my business then press the key combination again when done. The problem is that the screencast file gets generated maybe 1 out of 10 times. Is there a log file I can look at to determine the issue? How about a settings file? UPDATE: I did some additional testing. What's happening is that the screencast does work but it appends the new video to the existing file. Even if the file is renamed or moved to trash. Emptying trash does not create a new file either. Not sure where the video gets recorded to then. The only reliable way I've found to have a new file created is to log out of the session and log back in. Is this expected behaviour? Is there a way to force screencast to create a new file every time Ctrl-Alt-Shift-R is pressed?

• dpkg in uninterruptible sleep

  I have several Ubuntu servers 10.04. Today, I tried to upgrade some packages on one of these servers and the process got stuck. I logged in using another SSH session and I found that dpkg is in D state (uninterruptible sleep). According to what I have read, this state results generally from I/O waiting like waiting for NFS share. I can not understand why dpkg will block in this state. I can not see any obvious problems other than this. Here is the output of ps to show the blocking process: $ ps axo pid,cmd,s,wchan | grep dpkg 22571 /usr/bin/dpkg --status-fd 2 D call_rwsem_down_read_failed This process can not be killed even with kill -9. So, I will not be able to install/upgrade any package unless I reboot the server. What makes it worse is that the remote reboot does not succeed in such a case (having processes in D state). Can anyone help with this? How can I avoid this in the future.

• I can't enable extra effects in Ubuntu 10.10. Please help?

  I installed Ubuntu 10.10 alongside Ubuntu 11.10 to use an older version of Compiz. On Ubuntu 11.10, Compiz was enabled by default and I didn't need to use any graphics driver to enjoy the effects. All I had to do was install CompizConfig Settings Manager and enable those extra effects. That was Compiz 0.9.6. Now, after installing Ubuntu 10.10, when I first logged in, the graphics were slow. When I dragged a window from one end of the screen to the other, the whole screen would blur up and pixelate and it would be very laggy. I tried going to System Preference Appearance and selecting Extra effects on the Visual effects tab, but all I got was "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I don't know whether I should install the Additional drivers (proprietary) because my Internet is slow and it would take a long time. Furthermore, in Ubuntu 11.10, after I installed the proprietary graphics driver, I immediately went into fallback mode and wasn't even offered an option to set my desktop session to Ubuntu 3D. I didn't need the driver to run Compiz in Ubuntu 11.10, it just ran so smoothly. But in Ubuntu 10.10, everything is so laggy. Should I install the ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX Graphics Driver for Ubuntu 10.10 to enable extra effects? Or is there something else wrong with my system? • Slap the App on the VM for every private cloud solution! Really ?

  One of the key attractions of the general session "Managing Enterprise Private Cloud" at Oracle OpenWorld 2012 was an interactive role play depicting how to address some of the key challenges of planning, deploying and managing an enterprise private cloud. It was a face-off between Don DeVM, IT manager at a fictitious enterprise 'Vulcan' and Ed Muntz, the Enterprise Manager hero .   Don DeVM is really excited about the efficiency and cost savings from virtualization. The success he enjoyed from the infrastructure virtualization made him believe that for all cloud service delivery models ( database, testing or applications as-a-service ), he has a single solution - slap the app on the VM and here you go . However, Ed Muntz believes in delivering cloud services that allows the business units and enterprise users to manage the complete lifecycle of the cloud services they are providing, for example, setting up cloud, provisioning it to users through a self-service portal ,  managing and tuning the performance, monitoring and applying patches for database or applications. • Weird 302 Redirects in Windows Azure

  In IdentityServer I don’t use Forms Authentication but the session facility from WIF. That also means that I implemented my own redirect logic to a login page when needed. To achieve that I turned off the built-in authentication (authenticationMode="none") and added an Application_EndRequest handler that checks for 401s and does the redirect to my sign in route. The redirect only happens for web pages and not for web services. This all works fine in local IIS – but in the Azure Compute Emulator and Windows Azure many of my tests are failing and I suddenly see 302 status codes where I expected 401s (the web service calls). After some debugging kung-fu and enabling FREB I found out, that there is still the Forms Authentication module in effect turning 401s into 302s. My EndRequest handler never sees a 401 (despite turning forms auth off in config)! Not sure what’s going on (I suspect some inherited configuration that gets in my way here). Even if it shouldn’t be necessary, an explicit removal of the forms auth module from the module list fixed it, and I now have the same behavior in local IIS and Windows Azure. strange. <modules>   <remove name="FormsAuthentication" /> </modules> HTH Update: Brock ran into the same issue, and found the real reason. • X-notifier doesn't work in Chromium Browser

  It just keeps checking in vain. Also cannot import or export data, but get this error I use the latest versions of both in Lubuntu 12.04. In Google Chrome it works. What could it be the problem? • Create a custom shortcut that types clipboard contents

  I want to paste my clipboard contents to a remote session such as VNC, IPMI, or Raritan. To accomplish this, I installed xdotool and clip. Then I wrote a simple command that types the clipboard contents: xdotool type "$(xclip -o)" This works if I stay in a terminal window, and type that command myself. It types back my clipboard contents when I run the command. Of course now I want to make this into a hotkey that works in any window. However, if I create a custom shortcut using Keyboard settings, it doesn't work. If I assign a hotkey Alt+K to the shortcut, nothing happens when I press it. If I use Ctrl+K, unexpected behavior occurs to whatever window has focus. e.g. my terminal window size shrinks (it's somewhat amusing, actually). Similar results occur if I save it as a script and call the script, or if I encapsulate the command with sh -c. How can I make practical use of the powerful xdotool type command?

• Cannot Boot, How to recover

  Am running 11.10 64-bit with Gnome-shell. Something happened late Friday whereby my machine never gets to the login screen. I do get to an Ubuntu splash logo, after that I get a text screen that it hangs on. The screen is referring to issues with mounting various network resources, including VMWare and also some references to my NAS that are in fstab. If I hit "esc" I can get to the GRUB menu and into recovery console. If I try to do a file system check, I run into a similar error screen that I see when trying to boot normally. A possible clue here is that during my last good session I made some mods to the /etc/hosts file to reference another system which I'm connecting to with Synergy. I don't believe I have hardware issues as I'm able to boot properly with a Live USB and connect to my network/Internet. A few more tidbits. I have regular Dejadups backups on my NAS. I have a good Clonezilla whole drive image which is 4-6 weeks old.. My home is encrypted. I thought I'd try blowing away my hosts file via live USB, but when I mounted the hard drive everything was read-only and I couldn't figure out how to replace it. P.S. I logged in via CLI and modded the host file to remove the entry I'd made, to no avail. System continue to gets stuck on the following: CIFS VFS: default security mechanism requested. The default security mechanism will be upgraded from ntlm to ntlmv2 in kernel version 3.1s Would love some sober advice on how to attack this.

• Why does 12.04 try but fail to hibernate, even after I enabled hibernation?

  Regarding the below (-----) info from another post, my system will try (as is said below) to hibernate, but it won't get all the way there. Hard drive activity stops, but it does not shut down. If I turn the power off, then back on, it will start, but I have to "restore previous session" in the browser and other open apps don't restart, with the accompanying hassle. So because it tries, will the suggested fix then cause it to work correctly, or is the literal "try" not really what he means?!? PLEASE NOTE - this is a desktop system, not a laptop. Before enabling hibernation, please try to test whether it works correctly by running pm-hibernate in a terminal. The system will try to hibernate. If you are able to start the system again then you are more or less safe to add an override. To do so, start editing sudo nano /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla Fill it with this [Re-enable hibernate by default] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate ResultActive=yes Save by pressing Ctrl-O and exit nano by pressing Ctrl-X Restart and hibernation is back!

• Dual Monitor 'How To' for 12.04

  I recently built my own PC and was delighted with the result, except for a problem with dual monitors. After having tried a few different combinations of hardware, I think what I really need is a 'how to' explanation. My motherboard is an MSI Z77MA-G45, which has an analogue, a DVI, and a HDMI port. Initially I hooked monitors up to the DVI and analogue port and it seemed to work fine. Both screens worked independently of each other, it was great. After a few days I started turning my PC off at night, and when I tried to turn it back on it would boot into the terminal mode. I would have to turn one of the monitors off and after rebooting a few times, it would eventually boot into an X Window session. Occasionally I would see an error relating to Xorg. I upgraded the motherboard BIOS but that made no difference. Eventually, I installed a graphics card - an NVIDIA GeForce GT 520. Now it seems that my on board graphics have been disabled completely, and I am reliant on the graphics card. Furthermore, the graphics card seems to only recognise one screen at a time. (The first time I rebooted with both plugged in, it flashed up a message saying that it was auto-selecting DVI). Anyhow, I think I need some 'how to' (or perhaps 'where to'), from here. For example, is X Windows configuration the next place to look? And how do I go about configuring X Windows? (Note that in Systems Settings it says my graphics driver is 'unknown', and when I ask it to detect monitors, it sees only the one!)

• Python Web Applications: What is the way and the method to handle Registrations, Login-Logouts and Cookies? [on hold]

  I am working on a simple Python web application for learning purposes. I have chosen a very minimalistic and simple framework. I have done a significant amount of research but I couldn't find a source clearly explaining what I need, which is as follows: I would like to learn more about: User registration User Log-ins User Log-outs User auto-logins I have successfully handled items 1 and 3 due to their simple nature. However, I am confused with item 2 (log-ins) and item 4 (auto-logins). When a user enters username and password, and after hashing with salts and matching it in the DB; What information should I store in the cookies in order to keep the user logged in during the session? Do I keep username+password but encrypt them? Both or just password? Do I keep username and a generated key matching their password? If I want the user to be able to auto-login (when they leave and come back to the web page), what information then is kept in the cookies? I don't want to use modules or libraries that handle these things automatically. I want to learn basics and why something is the way it is. I would also like to point out that I do not mind reading anything you might offer on the topic that explains hows and whys. Possibly with algorithm diagrams to show the process. Some information: I know about setting headers, cookies, encryption (up to some level, obviously not an expert!), request objects, SQLAlchemy etc. I don't want any data kept in a single web application server's store. I want multiple app-servers to be handle a user, and whatever needs to be kept on the server to be done with a Postgres/MySQL via SQLAlchemy (I think, this is called stateless?) Thank you.
