  • Rails /tmp/cache/assets permissions issue using Debian virtual machine hosted on OS X Lion

    I am running Parallels Desktop 7 on OS X Lion. I have a VM with Debian installed, and inside that VM I setup a Rails development environment. I am using Parallels Tools to share out my OS X home directory to the VM - the goal here is to run the Rails server on the VM, but host the files on OS X (so they are automatically backed up, and so I can use tools like Textmate to develop with). Everything seems to work with the shared directory - my Debian user can read, write, and execute files. However, when I cloned a recent Rails project from Git, I got an error message when it tried to compile the CSS assets. My symptoms are exactly the same as in the question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7556774/rails-sprocket-error-compiling-css-assest-chown-issue I believe this is permissions-based, but it is really weird. My entire Rails project directory has permissions set to 777 and my Debian user owns it. If I navigate into /tmp/cache/assets, those permissions are the same. However, the three-character directories Rails is creating (DCE, DA1, D05, etc...) are being created without write permissions! If I refresh the Rails page a few times, about 4 or 5 (with Rails creating new three-character directories every time), eventually it will create one of the directories with the proper 777 permissions and everything will work! This will persist until I make a change to the CSS files and it has to recompile. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here? I can't fathom why it is creating temp directories with incorrect permissions, or why after a few refreshes the good permissions kick in and it works... It definitely seems to be an issue with the share, since if I move the project into a different directory on the VM, it seems to work fine. On the OS X side, I've given the shared folder 777 permissions as well, but no dice...any ideas? Update I've found that the number of times I need to refresh before it works is not random - it has to do with how many assets are being compiled. For example, if I edit one of my CSS files, and there are four CSS files in the app/assets/stylesheets directory, I have to refresh four times before the app will finally work without the operation not permitted error...

  • Dependency Walker reports IESHIMS.DLL and WER.DLL missing?

    On a Windows XP Professional SP3 with Internet Explorer 8 box, when I run Dependency Walker on an executable of mine it reports that: IESHIMS.DLL and WER.DLL can't be found. Do I need these DLL's? Where can I get them? I believe they are supposed to located in C:\Windows\System32\Wer.dll and C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Ieshims.dll

  • Update a list from another list

    I have a list of users in local store that I need to update from a remote list of users every once in a while. Basically: If a remote user already exists locally, update its fields. If a remote user doesn't already exist locally, add the user. If a local user doesn't appear in the remote list, deactivate or delete. If a local user also appears in the remote list, update its fields. Just a simple case of syncing the local list. Is there a better way to do this in pure Java than the following?   • Browser connects to WCF service but not my WCF client. What can be the reason?

    On a production server (Windows Server 2003 SP2) I can connect to a remote WCF service with Internet Explorer 8: When I browse to the URL http://www.domain.com/Service.svc (where my service listens) I get the expected info page of the service displayed. Connection settings in Internet Explorer only specify "auto detect", proxy settings are disabled. If I start a console application (built with WCF in .NET 4.0) on the same server which also tries to connect to the same WCF service it fails telling me that no endpoint was available listening on http://www.domain.com/Service.svc.   • Bazaar newbie question about repository structures

    I want to use Bazaar on Windows XP for web-development and related tasks. Most of the files are edited locally and then transferred via FTP to the server. Just now the repository sits on my local workstation. Later on it should be shared locally with some co-workers. Perhaps we will use a local Linux server as a centralized repository, but this structure is not decided for now. But first I need to understand the impacts of the different repository setups, which I do not at all. Using Bazaar-Explorer on Windows XP I’ve created a ‘shared tree repository’ from the option list of the init-dialogue in some location dev-filter/. Bazaar Explorer tells me: Created repository with treeless branches at F:/bzr.local/dev-filter Created branch at F:/bzr.local/dev-filter/trunk Created working tree at F:/bzr.local/dev-filter/work OK so far. Now I move a bunch of files into the work directory and add and commit them as Rev 1 ‘Start Revision’. Then I work on some of these files and commit them again as Rev 2. Here my confusion starts. Shouldn’t both revisions go into the trunk? The trunk is still empty, beside the .bzr directory which only holds some management information. If I delete my working directory, which I have tried during these first experiments, everything is gone. There’s obviously no hidden storage of those files. OK. Perhaps I need to push it into the trunk? This does not work either. Entering the work/ directory and initializing the ‘push’ to the trunk, Bazaar-Explorer tells me No new revisions to push. So what? This looks like a severe conceptual misunderstanding about what should happen on my side. Edit, 2010-02-03: Some conclusions What I learned meanwhile is this: I think I should switch to the command line until I really understand what’s going on, at least for creating the repositories and branches. Bazaar Explorer introduces a new level of abstraction which I only can handle if I understand the level beneath One of the secrets of working with Bazaar at least for me is to understand those .bzr directories, their particular properties and states when created with ‘bzr init’, ‘bzr init-repository’, ‘bzr branch’ etc. in all their variants and how they are plumped together. While there’s a whole chapter of ‘Organizing your workspace’ in the Bazaar User Guide, it’s more or less workflow oriented. The manual contains a lot of directory structures for the given examples. What I would prefer beside this and have not (or only rudimentary) found so far is some graphical representation of those ‘Lego like’ .bzr building blocks which create the linking of all the parts. So I started to invent some simple notation while working through the examples and looking into the .bzr directories to document what information is stored there, where does it come from, how and to what is it linked, is it complete or shared, etc. Erich Schreiber

  • jquery.ui sortable using a table and item:tr , placeholder difficulties

    Hi I would really like to give some sortable goodness to the myriad old tables I have created. A little work has a proof of concept behaving ok. My one sticking point is that the placeholder does not work at all in IE 7 when using item:TR . It works OK in FF. I can make an perform correctly. On the Dynamic Data edit page for Organisation, I need to filter the dropdown for Manager to only show active records. I started out by making a custom version of DynamicData\FieldTemplates\ForeignKey_Edit.ascx and setting a UIHint to the new field template on Organisation.Manager.   • The Command "File.BatchNewTeamProject" is not available in VSTS 2010

    Hi, I am trying to automate the creation of team projects using a command built into VS 2010 called File.BatchNewTeamProject using a project settings file as an argument, and executing this as a process silently in the background from my c# win app. I am aware of a requirement that Team Explorer has to be open and connected to TFS before this command can run, however, when I start a process with devenv.exe, a fresh instance of visual studio pops up with Team Explorer not connected by default. How can I solve this problem?

My code works well for all browsers, except IE8 (and maybe earlier versions). a.submit-button:active and a.submit-button:active span are simply blocked by "hover" and never work.   • Why isnt sql management studio integrated in visual studio?

    I have both SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2008 installed and think it would be really nice to have SQL Management Studio integrated directly within Visual Studio. Is there a way to make that happen? What about in VS 2010 with SQL Server 2008? I find the Visual Studio Server Explorer window to be much slower too than the Object Browser in SQL Server's Management Studio... it would be nice to never really need to use the Server Explorer.

  • Rails ActiveResource Associations

    I have some ARes models (see below) that I'm trying to use associations with (which seems to be wholly undocumented and maybe not possible but I thought I'd give it a try) So on my service side, my ActiveRecord object will render something like render :xml => @group.to_xml(:include => :customers) (see generated xml below) The models Group and Customers are HABTM On my ARes side, I'm hoping that it can see the <customers> xml attribute and automatically populate the .customers attribute of that Group object , but the has_many etc methods aren't supported (at least as far as I can tell) So I'm wondering how ARes does it's reflection on the XML to set the attributes of an object. In AR for instance I could create a def customers=(customer_array) and set it myself, but this doesn't seem to work in ARes. One suggestion I found for an "association" is the just have a method def customers Customer.find(:all, :conditions => {:group_id => self.id}) end But this has the disadvantage that it makes a second service call to look up those customers... not cool I'd like my ActiveResource model to see that the customers attribute in the XML and automatically populate my model.
