• Runas Windows Explorer in Windows 7

  Hi All, Having a strange issue with Windows Explorer on Windows 7 Professional. When I try to open it up under different user credentials, I get the following error message: Results are the same whether I try it from the context menu or by using runas /user:DOMAIN\User explorer.exe However, if I open up a command prompt (using runas.exe) the behavior is a bit different: typing in just explorer or explorer.exe results in the same error. typing in explorer C: or explorer /E,... doesn't run anything. I'm dropped right back to the prompt. explorer process doesn't start. Has anyone seen this behavior before? If so, how can I go about changing it. Thanks.

• Problem with IIS 6.0 in WOW WCF 4 (.net 4.0)

  We just upgraded to WCF 4 on IIS 6 (running in WoW 32 bit mode), and all of a sudden the services started running into what appears to be concurrency problems. Upon finding out we had a problem, we changed the Behavior Configuration Changes on the WCF server to the follow: <serviceThrottling maxConcurrentCalls="1000" maxConcurrentInstances="1000" maxConcurrentSessions="1000" /> We also changed the number of worker processes from 1 to 5. Doing all of this seemed to have no effect. The service seemed to be running, but throttled by something. Is there anything else that might need to be changed to remove the "artificial" throttling? Were using the default configuration WCF which should be Per-Call (not singleton).

• Code Bubbles: Disruption comes to the IDE

  If you’re like me, you might see the open source Eclipse IDE as a copy or, more generously, a port of the Microsoft’s Visual Studio for the non-.NET world.  It’s not that Microsoft invented the IDE (I would credit Borland with that), but they really took the idea and ran with it for the first version of Visual Studio .NET in 2002.  The question is whether someone outside of Microsoft could take the modern IDE yet another major step forward in both principle and productivity. I think that has actually happened already, and I think the innovator in question is a second-year Computer Science PhD student at Brown, named Andrew Bragdon.  His project, which he calls Code Bubbles, is an IDE that allows for editing, debugging and exploration of code in “bubbles” which remind me a little bit of the discrete note tiles on OneNote…but they’re much more than that.  Bubbles actually allow for call stack traversal, saved debug sessions, sophisticated breakpoint and value watch behaviors and more.  And because bubbles, unlike windows, are borderless, and focus on code fragments rather than whole files, the de-cluttering effect is unbelievably liberating.  The best way to understand what Code Bubbles does is to watch the screencast video:     Code Bubbles is an IDE for Java development.  Why didn’t Microsoft come up with something like this for .NET devs?  Between the existing features in Visual Studio 2010, its WPF code editor, and the fact that OneNote’s UI bears some affinity to Code Bubbles’, it’s interesting that Microsoft still has not thought outside of its own “box” to get us something like this. Heck, that’s easy for me to say.  But it’s easy for you to say that you’d like something like this in Visual Studio sometime soon.  That’s because the ASP.NET site within UserVoice is taking votes on this very issue.  Just click this link and vote! • Sony Vaio E14 upgraded to Windows 8.1 has fan on full all the time

  Having a bit of a nightmare after upgrading to 8.1 - the fan is constantly on maximum. This question and other sources around the net suggest upgrading the AMD driver. I have upgraded both the graphics drivers as far as I can: AMD Radeon HD 7600M - v13.150.102.0 Intel HD Graphics 4000 - v10.18.10.3316 and I am still having the issue. I'm at a lost as to what to do now! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Update Upgrading the AMD Radeon HD 7600M Series driver to 13.152.1.1000 seems to have fixed the issue on startup - however, putting the laptop to sleep and resuming causes the fan to go full speed at all times again.

• Copy Windows 7 environment running on external drive to a new HDD partition on a Mac?

  My PC has just given up on me. It's getting a bit old so I took the HDD out and bought a Mac. I've put the PC's HDD into an enclosure, plugged it into the Mac and dragged across most of my files. I've got a couple of programs that are PC-only that I have to run from time to time, so I'd like to make a partition on the Mac and have Windows 7 installed there. I know how to set up a clean version of Windows in Boot Camp. Is there an easy way to copy over the environment on the HDD to the Mac's partition? I don't really need all the stuff on the PC, just the operating system. Is there a better way to do this other than having to deactivate Windows, then reactivate it on the Mac? I have a free upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista, thus I have an upgrade disc, not the full disc.

• XAMPP vs WAMP security and other on Windows XP

  Not long ago I found WAMP and thought it was a God send because it had all the things I wanted/needed (Apache, PHP, MySQL, and phpMyAdmin) all built into one installer. One thing about WAMP has been making me mad is an error I get in phpMyAdmin about the advanced features not working. I have tried to fix that error long enough on that error for long enough. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2688385/problem-with-phpmyadmin-advanced-features I now read that most people prefer XAMPP over WAMP, but I am a bit concerned that XAMPP might have some extra security holes with Mercury and Perl, two thing that I don't really need or want right now. Are my security concerns justified or not? Is there any other reasons to go with XAMPP over WAMP or vice versa?

• Old (Leopard) Expose on Snow Leopard (for mac)

  I'm amazed this question haven't been asked here. There are many discussions about it out there and even a way to remove the blue glow. Of course I've already filled my complain with apple... But, is there a way to have the old expose on Snow Leopard? Or maybe a mix of both. The only thing I like on the new one is viewing minimized windows, but not always. So I'd like better been able to tweak it a little bit, but just having the old expose would be fine.

• Log shipping and shrinking transaction logs

  I just solved a problem that had me worried for a bit. I'm log shipping from three primary servers to a single secondary server, and the transaction log disk on the secondary server was getting very full. I established that several primary databases had unused space that resulted from big, one-off updates so I could shrink their logs. But would this action be log shipped and applied to the secondary database too? I thought probably not. And, more importantly, would it break log shipping? My secondary databases are in a Standby / Read Only state so I didn't think I could shrink their logs. I RTFMd, Googled, and asked on a Q&A site (not the evil one) but was none the wiser. So I was facing a monumental round of shrink, full backup, full secondary restore and re-start log shipping (which would leave us without a disaster recovery facility for the duration). Then I thought it might be worthwhile to take a non-essential database and just make absolutely sure a log shrink on the primary wouldn't ship over and occur on the secondary as well. So I did a DBCC SHRINKFILE and kept an eye on the secondary. Bingo! Log shipping didn't blink and the log on the secondary shrank too. I just love it when something turns out even better than I dared to hope. (And I guess this highlights something I need to learn about what activities are logged.)

• Anyone have experience with Silicon Mechanics 4-Node Machines?

  I'm taking a look at buying some new servers (small infrastructure, 2 racks, etc), and although I like a lot of the features in blades, I'm looking at the price point for Silicon Mechanics' 4-node machines. http://www.siliconmechanics.com/i27091/xeon-2U-4-Node.php It's a bit like a mini-blade enclosure, but has no shared resources, except for the redundant power supplies. A single point of management would be great, but for the low price point here, I'm possibly willing to give that up, if the server quality is adequate. Basically, have you used these machines? Any problems? Anything you like?

• Platform Builder: PBWorkspaces CESysgen.bat Not Used?

  One of the things that I like about Windows CE is that I am always learning new things, but in this case it is a bit disturbing. We working with Multi UI (MUI) this week and discovered some problems with Windows CE 5.0 and Chinese language support. These problems don’t exist in CE 6.0. The problem was that in the batch files in Public\CEBASE\oak\misc, specifically weceshellfe.bat, some of the shell components needed are only included if certain LOCALs are selected. English is not one of them, I suppose this is because someone didn’t think that we would ever use them and English – doh. No problem, just work around this in PBWorkspaces\<workspace>\WINCE500\<BPS>\cesysgen.bat. But that didn’t work. After a lot of trial and error, what I determined is that this cesysgen.bat isn’t actually used by Platform Builder any more.  Instead, in that same folder is a <workspace>.bat file that is called by Public\CEBASE\oak\misc\cesysgen.bat. That leads to some new problems though, but solvable, in that what I really wanted to do was add a fix after the batch files in CEBASE run, but <workspace>.bat runs before the other batch files in CEBASE. • Impersonation on IIS 7.0 passes the machine credentials for Crystal Reports

  On a 32-bit Windows 2008 server running the Donor2 Application in the Classic .NET Managed Pipeline mode, configured for Windows Integrated Authentication and Impersonation, all of the .NET pages are passing the authenticated user’s credentials [DomainName\UserName]. This is the correct, expected behavior. The Crystal Reports pages, instead of passing the authenticated user’s credentials, are passing the IIS Server’s credentials [DomainName\MachineName$]. One of the very frustrating aspects of this situation is that I have another server which, as far as I can tell, is configured identically. That server, when loading Crystal Reports, is passing the authenticated user’s credentials [DomainName\UserName] as expected. I have obviously missed something, but I have no idea what it could be.

• Enable compiz on intel core i5 (Nvidia GT330M) based laptop

  Hi, I am trying to enable compiz on my laptop via Desktop Effects but it does not allow it. I modified the xorg.conf file as on the compiz wiki but still no luck. So can someone just tell me how to enable compiz desktop on an Intel i5 based system. This is an Arrandale processor so its got the graphics bit on the processor itself. My system also has a discrete graphics card (Nvidia GT330M - yup its those hybrid graphics combos n- not Optimus). As far as i know the nvidia gpu is not being used since the intel one is enabled and there is no bios route to disable it. The laptop is a Dell Vostro 3700 with bios version A10 I did lotsa google searches about intel compiz, etc but not a single conclusive guide as to how to enable it. so my guess is it should work out of the box. but it doesn't. glxinfo gives me: name of display: :0.0 Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".   People Pane in Outlook 2010 either does not show any emails, or only shows some emails for other folders. I've tried re-indexing and recreating the profile, to no avail. I really like the new People Pane in Outlook 2010. Not for the "Social" features, but for finding related emails and attachments. But it just does not work. It is totally broken. Do you know some trick to make it work? Using 32-bit Outlook local version, without Exchange.

  I have a number of windows servers, both win2003, win2003r2 and win2003r2 64 bit. After installing windows updates on the machines and rebooting terminal services give me an immediate "not connect" message. The servers are running fine and you can connect via the physical machine. Once you reboot the box (with remote restart in some cases when it's not accessible) terminal services behaves itself and allows a connection. Whilst it's not a show stopper it is rather annoying when you can't see your box. Anyone know why this is or what the cause is?

• Getting USB boot to work in SmartOS on HP ProLiant N40L

  I recently downloaded SmartOS and tried running it on my HP ProLiant N40L, but it always fails on boot. After dd'ing the image to the USB stick, I plug it into the internal USB header and turn the machine on. After selecting from GRUB, it displays the following: , bss=0x0 It sits there for 2-4 minutes, then finally boots the OS and displays the following: WARNING: Couldn't read ACPI SRAT table from BIOS. lgrp support will be limited to one group. SunOS Release 5.11 Version joyent_20120614T184600Z 64-bit Copyright (c) 2010-2012, Joyent Inc. All rights reserved. WARNING: kvm: no hardware support After that, it hangs. I've tried this with two different USB sticks. I've seen some mentions on the SmartOS website about people running it on an N40L, booting from USB, so maybe it's just broken hardware? Has anyone gotten this working?

  Hi, I'm using dkim-milter, Postfix on Ubuntu (I think I used these instructions for setting up). Anyway, using the reflectors such as Port25, BlackOps and Altn.com I get passes for DKIM: X-DKIM: OpenDKIM Filter v2.0.1 medusa.blackops.org o2SGTMSg005616 Authentication-Results: medusa.blackops.org; dkim=pass (1024-bit key) [email protected]; dkim-adsp=pass dkim=pass header.d=example.com (b=miSIxi7TMX; 1:0:good); Authentication-Results: verifier.port25.com header.d=example.com; dkim=pass (matches From: [email protected]); Yahoo gives this: Authentication-Results: mta1031.mail.ukl.yahoo.com from=; domainkeys=neutral (no sig); from=example.com; dkim=permerror (key failed) Where, obviously, example.com is my site address. Is anyone aware of anything different with Yahoo! that would stop these from signing? TIA

  Im using Web Deploy with IIS7 and I want to grant permissions on a web site physical folder. Ive done this before (as I have another physical folder with r/w for WMSvc) but I have forgotten how I did it! When I go to the physical folder Security Tab Edit Add Object Name = WMSvc Check Names, I get 'An object named WMSvc cannot be found'?? I have the 'WMSvc' object listed fine in the 'Groups or usernames' on the other Folder I mentioned above. I feel a bit daft, what am I doing wrong, how can give folder permissions to WMSvc object on a physical folder?

• What are good values for PSU voltages?

  Hello, I have an odd computer I'm trying to fix that will crash only during the setup of an OS(crashes on every OS I've tried so far) It's not overheating and it is stripped down as much as possible and I've tried multiple harddrives, and memtest86+ can run on it for 3 hours without a crash or fail. So, I was a bit stumped and was looking in the BIOS for possible causes and found a hardware monitor that shows PSU voltages. They are: VCORE: 1.432V 3.3V: 3.136V 5V: 5.273 12V: 12.144V I thought the 3.3V looked a little low, but I'm not really sure on how "bad" that is. So, what are the good ranges for the voltages on each CPU rail?

• Can I shorten my directory commands in ubuntu?

  When working on a rails app I like to open all of my files through the command line like so cd my_app gedit app/views/user/show.html.erb Is there a way that I could shorten this so that I could just write something like gedit user_views/show.html.erb ? I would like the console to stay in the main directory, I just don't like having to type out app/controller/user_controler.rb every time I want to open the user controller. I know that I could just open the file with my mouse, but I feel like moving from keyboard to mouse breaks my focus a little bit. When I can just tap away at the keyboard it seems like I have a more smooth workflow.
