  • Waiting for ServerSocket accept() to put socket into "listen" mode

    I need a simple client-server communication in order to implement unit-test. My steps: Create server thread Wait for server thread to put server socket into listen mode ( serverSocket.accept() ) Create client Make some request, verify responses Basically, I have a problem with step #2. I can't find a way to signal me when server socket is put to "listen" state. An asynchronous call to "accept" will do in this case, but java doesn't support this (it seems to support only asynchronous channels and those are incompatible with "accept()" method according to documentation). Of cause I can put a simple "sleep", but that is not really a solution for production code. So, to summarize, I need to detect when ServerSocket has been put into listen mode without using sleeps and/or polling.

I've been lucky enough to come in to a company in the oil business from the beginning, developing software for relatively new and unused technology. Long before I even got this job, I've wanted to start my own consulting firm. Is it morally wrong of me to quit my job after a few years, only to hire myself out as a 'specialist' or consultant on our systems?

  • Shell Prompt Line Wrapping Issue

    I've done something to break my Bash Shell Prompt in OS X (10.5.7) Terminal. This is the PS1 that I had configured: PS1='\[\e[1;32m\]\h\[\e[0m\]:\[\e[1;34m\]\w\[\e[0m\]\$ ' As far as I can tell I have the color commands escaping correctly. However when I scroll up and down in my command history I often get line wrapping issues if the historic commands wrap onto multiple lines. I simplified my prompts to the following: PS1='\[\e[1m\]\h:\w\$ \[\e[0m\]' PS2='> ' And I still see something like: localhost:~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/knpmxpup.Defau lt/extensions/{1A2D0EC4-75F5-4c91-89C4-3656F6E44B68}$ expocd \{1A2D0EC4-7 5F5-4c91-89C4-3656F6E export PS1="\[ \e[1;32m\]\h\[\e[0m\]: cd Library/Appl ication\ Support/ I've also tried \033 instead of \e. I just included PS2 up there for information, I haven't changed that from the install default. If I completely remove the color codes then everything works fine, any ideas?

  • Letters of recommendation from customers? [closed]

    I am leaving my job soon and am looking for letters of recommendation. My problem is, I've worked more closely with my customers than my project lead (not technical) or manager (the customers usually talk to me first and rarely even if CC my lead if I don't). So in this case, the customer has seen my work more closely than my leadership and can better attest to my abilities, communication skills, and performance. Are recommendations from customers viable, or will they be largely dismissed? Secondarily, can they be more useful than letters from managers that don't really know your work at all? Note: I already have a letter from the only coworker I've really worked with, but I'm looking to get more than one for good measure.

    I am updating a site for a training company. Each course has its own page, on which the dates of upcoming courses are listed. At present, the customer manually fills in a booking form with all the relevant information, including the course name, venue, and dates. What I would like to implement is a system whereby, when the user clicks the relevant date, the booking form (which is on a separate page) is automatically populated with the course name and date. Is that possible? Would it be simpler to have a form on each page and then have just the date and venue automatically filled in on click?

    Hello, I am writing a backend application which needs to be able to send multiple SQL commands to a MySQL server. MySQL = 5.x support multiple statements, but unfortunately we are interfacing with MySQL 4.x. I am trying to find a way (hint: regex) to split SQL statements by their semicolon, but it should ignore semicolons in single and double quotes strings. http://www.dev-explorer.com/articles/multiple-mysql-queries has a very nice regex to do that, but doesn't support double quotes. I'd be happy to hear your suggestions.

    I'm currently mining sequence patterns using SPADE algorithm in R. SPADE is included in "arulesSequence" package of R. I'm running R on my CentOS 6.3 64bit.     Hi, I'm attempting to run unit tests for a static library that attempts to create/write/read a file in the document directory. Since this is a static library and not an application for the iOS, attempts to reference the NSDocumentDirectory is returning me directory for the form "/Users//Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/Documents" This directory does not exist. When attempting to access a directory from an actual application, the NSDocumentDirectory returns something of the form: "/Users//Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/4.2/FEDBEF5F-1326-4383-A087-CDA1B865E61A/Documents" (Please note the simulator version as well as application ID as part of the path) How can I overcome this shortcoming in the unit test framework for static libraries that implement tests that require iOS app specific calls? Note: C++ does not support default-int Error 24 error C4430: missing type specifier - int assumed. Note: C++ does not support default-int Error 22 error C2146: syntax error : missing ';' before identifier 'm_pFileW' Those errors are referring to this code: FILE *m_pFileW; Did I missing any library header to use FILE syntax? Do I need to use different approach and replace FILE syntax? This errors are only generated when I placed it into my MFC project. This is not happening in C++ Console. Please help. Thank you.

    I have Windows 8 Release Customer Preview on my laptop. I tried to install Ubuntu on it with Ubuntu Windows installer (I have always used this to install, although that was on Windows 7), it installs and asks to reboot, then immediately Windows 8 boots up. I do not have the option to choose what OS to boot. How can I boot to Ubuntu? VM is not exactly what I would like to use, but it is an option, however a last resort. Any help?

  • Dual head setup for Ubuntu 10.04.1 and Windows XP Pro with same hardware configuration

    Hello. I have a Dell OptiPlex 360 workstation at work, with 2 x ATI RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] graphics cards installed, which are attached to two identical 19" HII flat panel monitors. I'm using the open source Radeon driver with Ubuntu, and the proprietary drivers with Windows. The good news is that dual head configuration works for both OSes. The bad news is, I have to use a different hardware configuration for each OS to achieve this. Hardware config #1: Dual monitors work for Windows XP Pro like this: First display -> external VGA port Second display -> DVI input on gfx card Hardware config #2: Dual monitors work for Ubuntu 10.04.1 like this: First display -> VGA port on gfx card Second display -> DVI input on gfx card I connected up the displays according to Config #2 and booted up Windows, which resulted in a mirror image on both screens. I was unable to login, as the login box was not visible. I unplugged the VGA lead from gfx card and plugged it into the external VGA port (Config #1) - Windows dual head works again, but the VGA-connected screen is not recognised by Ubuntu and remains in standby mode. Is it possible to configure a dual head setup for Ubuntu using Config #1, or am I missing something? I tried setting up dual monitors using Config #1, this morning which didn't work.     Phase #1 (IKE) succeeds without any problems (verified at the target host). Phase #2 (IPSec), however, is erroneous at some point (apparently due to misconfiguration on localhost). This should be an IPSec-only connection. I am using OpenSwan on Debian.   • Diagnosing Solaris 8 server memory and swap space usage

    Hello everyone. Essentially, my question is related to memory allocation for Solaris virtual machines. I am running a couple of old Sun ONE 6 Java web servers on two Solaris 8 virtual machines. I see that there's a reasonable amount of swap space being used, but I'm not exactly sure if this could indicate a need to add more RAM to these machines. At service peak hours (mornings usually), the response time of the web application these servers host jumps up to at most 11 seconds (somewhat detrimental for a relatively simple web page loading action). Average response time at non peak times is about 5 seconds. What would you be able to infer about the RAM usage for these machines from the ouput below? Is this information reasonably sufficient? Or would I need to run some other commands to rule out server memory starvation? Finally, since there is a Java application at the core of the setup, I've also thought about: 1) Trace the heap's Object allocation to detect potential memory leaks. 2) Do some performance profiling to see if this instead related to networking delays. I mention this since the application talks with a single Oracle Database, but I would doubt this to be the case since they're pretty close from a network segmentation perspective. I appreciate any kind of insight and feedback you could provide. Thanks for your time and help. The usual load: CPU: an average of 20% Each week about 50GB of additional space is occupied. About 47GB of uploaded files and 3GB of MySQL data. I'm afraid that the hard drive may be about to fail. Maybe I will go with 2x2TB Caviar Black in RAID4?
