• Structuring iPhone/iPad application views

  I have an idea about an application that I want to build and Im new to iPhone/iPad development (but not new to development in other languages/frameworks such as .NET and Java). I want to layout some views on the screen so that they animate (slide in) from different directions into their places. The question is about the strucuture of the application, if I have say 4 rectanglular areas on the screen that contain business data, such as contacts (name, photo, etc...) and they all take up different widths of the screen (say the first contact takes up one row of the screen, but the next 2 take up half the width of the next row each, and so on). Should I create a custom view for the different sized contact views, (i.e. LargeCustomView and SmallCustomView, and any other special type that I make) or should it all be one type, say, CustomerDetailsView which could be stretched to fit at design time? Also, if there were, say, 3 different instances of the same custom view on the one screen, are there 3 instances of the view controller also? Im a little confused about powering the data behind a view, can someone shed some light on this for me? Do I just set the properties (say an instance variable ContactForView) on the view controller for each instance? Thanks for any help you can give Cheers, Mark

  Hi Im making i photo sharint site I want to give the ability for my users to prevent the public to acces their albums with a password. Then they can give the password to the ones they want to be able to see it. To password protect their albums. • Generic Func<> as parameter to base method

  I might be losing the plot, but I hope someone can point me in the right direction. What am I trying to do? I'm trying to write some base methods which take Func< and Action so that these methods handle all of the exception handling etc. so its not repeated all over the place but allow the derived classes to specify what actions it wants to execute. • Uitableview not able to hold data

  Hi i have a uitableview, i am displaying some data of about 200 rows in it. Data will be displayed in several sections which will be determined at run time. I am able to get sections but i am not able to display data for a particular section in correct order. I have data in the form of dictionaries in an array. • HTML columns or rows for form layout?

  I'm building a bunch of forms that have labels and corresponding fields (input element or more complex elements). Labels go on the left, fields go on the right. Labels in a given form should all be a specific width so that the fields all line up vertically. There are two ways (maybe more?) of achieving this: Rows: Float each label and each field left. Put each label and field in a field-row div/container. Set label width to some specific number. With this approach labels on different forms will have different widths, because they'll depend on the width of the text in the longest label. Columns: Put all labels in one div/container that's floated left, put all fields in another floated left container with padding-left set. This way the labels and even the label container don't need to have their widths set, because the column layout and the padding-left will uniformly take care of vertically lining up all the fields. So approach #2 seems to be easier to implement (because the widths don't need to be set all the time), but I think it's also less object oriented, because a label and a field that goes with that label are not grouped together, as they are in approach #1. Also, if building forms dynamically, approach #2 doesn't work as well with functions like addRow(label, field), since it would have to know about the label and the field containers, instead of just creating/adding one field-row element. Which approach do you think is better? Is there another, better approach than these two?

• GTK+: How do I process RadioMenuItem choice without marking it chosen? And vise versa

  In my program, I've got a menu with a group of RadioMenuItem entries. Choosing one of them should trigger a function which can either succeed or fail. If it fails, this RadioMenuItem shouldn't be marked chosen (the previous one should persist). Besides, sometimes I want to set marked item without running the choice processing function. • HTML prevent line break (between two table tags)

  Hello, I have following code: <table> <tr> <td>Table 1</td> </tr> </table> <table> <tr> <td>Table 2</td> </tr> </table> Very unfortunately, a line break is inserted between these two tables. I have tried putting them both in a single span and setting the whitespace to nowrap, but at no avail. Please, could you tell me how I can simply put these elements in a single row, without setting the float attribute in CSS and without surrounding each table with a <td> {table} </td> and then putting this in a table row. • Error while closing SQL Connection

  I have a problem with closing the SQLconnection in my application. My application is in VB.net. I have a reference in my application to a class with code to open and close the database connection and to execute all sql scripts. The error occurs when i close my application. In the formClosing event of my main form I call a function that closes all the connections. But just before I close the connections I perform an SQLquery to delete a row from a table with the function below. Public Function DeleteFunction(ByVal mySQLQuery As String, ByVal cmd As SqlCommand) As Boolean Try cmd.Connection = myConnection cmd.CommandText = mySQLQuery cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() Return True Catch ex As Exception WriteErrorMessage("DeleteFunction", ex, Logpath, "SQL Error: " & mySQLQuery) Return False End Try End Function In my application I check the result of the boolean. If it returns True, then i call the function to close the database connection. The returned boolean is True and the requested row is deleted in my database. This means i can close my connection which I do with the function below. Public Sub DatabaseConnClose() myCommand.CommandText = "" myConnection.Close() myCommand = Nothing myConnection = Nothing End Sub After executing this code I receive an error in my logfile from the DeleteFunction. It says: "Connection property has not been initialized." It seems very strange to receive an error from a function that was completely executed, or am i wrong to think that? Can anyone tell me why I receive this error and how I can solve the problem?

• insert multiple rows into database from arrays

  Hi, i need some help with inserting multiple rows from different arrays into my database. I am making the database for a seating plan, for each seating block there is 5 rows (A-E) with each row having 15 seats. my DB rows are seat_id, seat_block, seat_row, seat_number, therefore i need to add 15 seat_numbers for each seat_row and 5 seat_rows for each seat_block. I mocked it up with some foreach loops but need some help turning it into an (hopefully single) SQL statement. $blocks = array("A","B","C","D"); $seat_rows = array("A","B","C","D","E"); $seat_nums = array("1","2","3","4","5","6","7","8","9","10","11","12","13","14","15"); foreach($blocks as $block){ echo "<br><br>"; echo "Block: " . $block . • Boost shared_ptr use_count function

  My application problem is the following - I have a large structure foo. Because these are large and for memory management reasons, we do not wish to delete them when processing on the data is complete. We are storing them in std::vector<boost::shared_ptr<foo>>. My question is related to knowing when all processing is complete. First decision is that we do not want any of the other application code to mark a complete flag in the structure because there are multiple execution paths in the program and we cannot predict which one is the last. So in our implementation, once processing is complete, we delete all copies of boost::shared_ptr<foo>> except for the one in the vector. This will drop the reference counter in the shared_ptr to 1. Is it practical to use shared_ptr.use_count() to see if it is equal to 1 to know when all other parts of my app are done with the data. One additional reason I'm asking the question is that the boost documentation on the shared pointer shared_ptr recommends not using "use_count" for production code.

• Combine Arbitrary number of polygons together

  I have an arbitrary number of polygons (hexes in this case) that are arranged randomly, but they are all touching another hex. Each individual hex has 6 x,y vertices. The vertex's are known for all the hexes. Can anyone point me in the direction of an algorithm that will combine all the hexes into a single polygon? Essentially I'm just looking for a function that spits out an array of vertex locations that are ordered in a way that when drawing lines from one to the next, it forms the polygon. This is my method so far: Create array of all the vertices for all the hexes. Determine the number of times a vertex occurs in the array If vertex is in the array 3+ times, delete the vertices from the array. If vertex is in the array 2 times, delete one of them. The next step is tricky though. I'm using canvas to draw out these polygons, which essentially involves drawing a line from one vertex to the next. So the order of the vertices in the final array is important. It can't be sorted arbitrarily. Also, I'm not looking for a "convex hull" algorithm, as that would not draw the polygon correctly. Are there any functions out there that do something like this? Am I on the right track or is there a better more efficient way?

• PHP: Check if 0?

  Hi, I am using a class which returns me the value of a particular row and cell of an excel spreadsheet. To build up an array of one column I am counting the rows and then looping through that number with a for() loop and then using the $array[] = $value to set the incrementing array object's value. This works great if none of the values in a cell are 0. The class returns me a number 0 so it's nothing to do with the class, I think it's the way I am looping through the rows and then assigning them to the array... I want to carry through the 0 value because I am creating graphs with the data afterwards, here is the code I have. // Get Rainfall $rainfall = array(); for($i=1;$i<=$count;$i++) { if($data->val($i,2) != 'Rainfall') // Check if not the column title { $rainfall[] = $data->val($i,2); } } For your info $data is the excel spreadsheet object and the method $data->val(row,col) is what returns me the value. • Slow loading of UITableView. How know why?

  I have a UITableView that show a long list of data. Use sections and follow the sugestion of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/695814/how-solve-slow-scrolling-in-uitableview . The flow is load a main UITableView & push a second selecting a row from there. However, with 3000 items take 11 seconds to show. I suspect first from the load of the records from sqlite (I preload the first 200). So I cut it to only 50. However, no matter if I preload only 1 or 500, the time is the same. The view is made from IB and all is opaque. I run out of ideas in how detect the problem. I run the Instruments tool but not know what to look. Also, when the user select a cell from the previous UITable, no visual feedback is show (ie: the cell not turn selected) for a while so he thinks he not select it and try several times. Is related to this problem. What to do? NOTE: The problem is only in the actual device: iPod Touch 2d generation Using fmdb as sqlite api Doing the caching in viewDidLoad Using NSDictionary for the caching Using a NSAutoreleasePool for the caching part. • sql query selecting one name no matter how many rows it was mentioned in

• Can someone answer this for me?

  okay I am totally stuck. I have been getting some help off and on throughout this project and am anxious to get this problem solved so I can continue on with the rest of this project. I have a gridview that is set to save to a file, and has the option to import into excel. I keep getting an error of this: Invalid cast exception was unhandled. At least one element in the source array could not be cast down to the destination array type. Can anyone tell me in layman easy to understand what this error is speaking of? • Dimensions of a collection, and how to traverse it in an efficient, elegant manner

  I'm trying to find an elegant way to deal with multi-dimensional collections in Scala. My understanding is that I can have up to a 5 dimensional collection using tabulate, such as in the case of the following 2-Dimensional array: val test = Array.tabulate[Double](row,col)(_+_) and that I can access the elements of the array using for(i<-0 until row) { for(j<-0 until col) { test(i)(j) = 0.0 } } If I don't know a priori what I'm going to be handling, what might be a succinct way of determining the structure of the collection, and spanning it, without doing something like: case(Array(x)) => for(i<-1 until dim1) { test(i) = 0.0 } case(Array(x,y)) => for(i<-1 until dim1) { for(j<-1 until dim2) { test(i)(j) = 0.0 } } case(Array(x,y,z)) => ... The dimensional values n1, n2, n3, etc... are private, right? Also, would one use the same trick of unwrapping a 2-D array into a 1-D vector when dealing with n-Dimensional objects if I want a single case to handle the traversal? Thanks in advance Bruce

• Create table class as a singleton

  I got a class that I use as a table. This class got an array of 16 row classes. These row classes all have 6 double variables. The values of these rows are set once and never change. Would it be a good practice to make this table a singleton? The advantage is that it cost less memory, but the table will be called from multiple threads so I have to synchronize my code which way cause a bit slower application. However lookups in this table are probably a very small portion of the total code that is executed. EDIT: This is my code, are there better ways to do this or is this a good practice? • Can't give my custom prototype cells in tableview different heights

  I've looked around at other questions here and many other sources online and just can't find a solution. I have 3 rows and no matter what I do, they all keep the width defined in the tableview. The first one is what I want, but the second and 3rd I can't give a custom height.
