• Get data from database without refresh whole page

  Hello everybody. My project is about a school admin I have a page called : createClass.php, where user inserts grade, profile etc. When he press "submit" page called createdClass.php is loading. Inside this page I have all code which insert data into database and also an "if" structure which says : "Class already exists" if in database is another class with same specifications. Also in second page (createdClass.php) i have a small table which shows the place of each student. First time all cells are green (this means that place is free) and if i click one of them appear a popup window which let me to add info about student from that place. If a place is busy the cell will be red (take a look here : http://screencast.com/t/NzM2YzYxNjct). The big problem is that the cell will be red only after refresh the page (the place ask for data from database). If I press refresh appears "class already exists". To test the code i added in a comment all lines which verify and add respectively classroom . I think my problem can be solved with ajax. I'm waiting for an answer. Regards Stefan

• Installing mongrel service on Windows 2008

  We use InstallAnywhere to install our product. One of the components that it needs to install is mongrel. IA invokes the following command line during installation: mongrel_rails service::install -N service-1 -D "Service 1" -c "C:\app_dir\\rails\rails_apps\service-1" -p 19000 -e production Apprently under the hoods "sc create..." is used. The installation works great on Windows 2003. On Windows 2008 though this operation requires elevated privileges. When I login as local administrator (ie 'local-machine\administrator' user), the installation works just fine. However, when I login as a domain user that is part of local administrators group, the services fails to install with error "access is denied". How can I make it possible to install the product without having to login as local administrator? Thanks! Couple of notes I would like to add. One solution I tried is to execute the installer as administrator. The service does get installed. However, it creates another problem. An embedded 3rd party product and its files get installed with admin only rights. So we do need to run the installer as logged in user.

  I am trying to build Linux From Scratch, and now I am at chapter 5.4, which tells me how to build Binutils. • Logging with Quartz.net

  I will shamelessly state that I have little experience with Log4Net... I only just installed it, but it won't capture log events from Quartz.net, which is a scheduling library. Apparently Quartz.net uses Commons Logging and that needs to be configured to point to my Log4Net settings. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. • Handling dependencies with IoC that change within a single function call

  We are trying to figure out how to setup Dependency Injection for situations where service classes can have different dependencies based on how they are used. In our specific case, we have a web app where 95% of the time the connection string is the same for the entire Request (this is a web application), but sometimes it can change. For example, we might have 2 classes with the following dependencies (simplified version - service actually has 4 dependencies): public LoginService (IUserRepository userRep) { } public UserRepository (IContext dbContext) { } In our IoC container, most of our dependencies are auto-wired except the Context for which I have something like this (not actual code, it's from memory ... this is StructureMap): x.ForRequestedType().Use() .WithCtorArg("connectionString").EqualTo(Session["ConnString"]); For 95% of our web application, this works perfectly. However, we have some admin-type functions that must operate across thousands of databases (one per client). • How to assign .net membership roles to individual database records

  I'm developing a system where we want to restrict the availability of information displayed to users based on their roles. e.g. I have a tabled called EventType (ID, EventTypeDescription) which contains the following records: 1, 'Basic Event' 2, 'Intermediate Event' 3, 'Admin Event' What I need to achieve is to filter the records returned based on the username (and hence role) of the logged-in user. e.g if an advanced user is logged in they will see all the event types, if the standard user is logged in they will only see the basic event type etc. Ideally id like to do this in a way which can be easily extended to other tables as necessary. So I'd like to avoid simply adding a 'Roles' field to each table where the data is user context sensitive. One idea I'm thinking of is to create some kind of permissions table like: PermissionsTable ( ID, Aspnet_RoleId, TableName, PrimaryKeyValue ) this has the drawback of using this is obviously having to use the table name to switch which table to join onto. Edit: In the absence of any better suggestions, I'm going to go with the last idea I mentioned, but instead of having a TableName field, I'm going to normalise the TableName out to it's own table as follows: TableNames ( ID, TableName ) UserPermissionsTable ( ID, Aspnet_UserId, TableID, PrimaryKeyValue )

• .NET regex's not working - 1# check beginning of text entered #2 check structure

  OK it has unfortunately been a while since I've used REGEX and I am struggling to wonder why its not working with my project. I have used Regex Tester which says my two tests are valid but when it comes to testing in my project they get rejected. 1) Check the text starts with certain characters [RegularExpression("(spAPP)",ErrorMessage = "Stored procedures must begin with spAPP")] This seems to accept spAPP on it's own, but not something like spAPPabcdef which I want it to. I am struggling to find the "Ignore rest of the text" attribute with REGEX. 2) A bit more complicated. I have certain naming conventions for AD groups, so an example would be "UK ROLE IT APPLICATION DEV ADMIN", up to the role name there are standards (so I need the "UK ROLE IT APPLICATION DEV" checked. [RegularExpression(@"((UK|FRANCE|GERMANY|USA)\s(ROLE)\s(IT|NON-IT)\s(APPLICATION)\s(DEV|TEST|LIVE))", ErrorMessage = "Please use AD naming standards.")] I think it might be the fact I am using () around all the words, but its easier to read in my code. The RegexTester I found seems to indicate that it's right, but again, in my .NET project, it rejects it. Thanks,

• My service does not start on Windows 2008 (it works on Windows 2003)

  When we install our product on Windows 2008 SP2, couple of services fail to start. After trying different things, we figured out that these service were able to start when "Log on as" is set to "Local system account". This service does need to run as a specific user because it requires access to secure resources. The service did run just fine under this special user account under Windows 2003. I am thinking the problem is related to UAC (user access control). Under interactive mode one can elevate permission by answering the security dialog box. How to do the same for a service? How to configure the service so it runs with necessary permissions? Thanks! Couple of notes I would like to add. One solution I tried is to execute the installer as administrator. • asp.net Membership : Extending Role membership?

  Hi there, I am been taking a look at asp.net membership and it seems to provide everything that i need but i need some kind of custom Role functionality. Currently i can add user to a role, great. But i also need to be able to add Permissions to Roles.. i.e. Role: Editor Permissions: Can View Editor Menu, Can Write to Editors Table, Can Delete Entries in Editors Table. Currently it doesn't support this, The idea behind this is to create a admin option in my program to create a role and then assign permissions to a role to say "allow the user to view a certain part of the application", "allow the user to open a menu item" Any ideas how i would implement soemthing like this? I presume a custom ROLE provider but i was wondering if some kind of framework extension existed already without rolling my own? Or anybody knows a good tutorial of how to tackle this issue? I am quite happy with what asp.net SQL provider has created in terms of tables etc... but i think i need to extend this by adding another table called RolesPermissions and then I presume :-) adding some kind of enumeration into the table for each valid permission?? • using jquery (json) to get ajax database entries in wordpress - PHP not working

  I'm writing a plugin for my wordpress site and am having trouble understanding the jquery ajax requests. In a nutshell, I am trying to get some user meta data loaded when the page loads. So in my javascript file I have a line: $.getJSON("http://mysite.co.uk/wp-content/plugins/myplugin/ajax/ajax.php?action=test", function(json) { // do stuff }); So the above DOES get called, but it's the PHP code I'm having trouble with. In the file ajax.php, I am making a database call, but NONE of the usual class information is available. I've tried including the admin ajax page, various other pages from my own plugin (which does work).... not sure what else to do! The database call method works OK in my plugin code.. but I guess that the ajax.php file is outside the WP framework so that's why it's not working... but I don't know how to get it IN the framework!? I just need to use the $wpdb->get_results($sql); command to get my SQL. The error returned from firebug is that I am making a call to an undefined function. • Access Denied while using System.Diagnostics.Process

  I am trying to use the unmanaged ImageMagick library in my ASP.NET application from the command line using System.Diagnostics.Process. Basically, users will upload an .eps file to the site, and then I will run the command line command to convert it into .jpg. I get the error "System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: Access is denied". The main between the two servers is that the production is 64-bit and runs Plesk to manage multiple domains. I've tried adding rights asp.net user to the ImageMagick directory. The PS Admin says that in the case of Plesk, it's the same account that I use to access the site in VS using FPE. Does anyone know what I might do in order to allow this process to run on my production server? Thanks, Mike

  Hi everyone , In my view this is one of the strangest problem i have ever come across in iPhone app development. Let me explain the scenario , i have main screen 'A' on which i have a Button that directs me to another Screen say 'B'. Now on Screen 'B' i have a feature in which user can send a mail to his friend for promotion purpose e.g a user wishes to tell a frnd about this app so i used MFMailComposeViewController and a view is generated where the user types the address and click send ( subject and body of mail is automatically generated ). After sending the mail a new view opens say screen 'C' and here i want to give the user the options . 1. Go to Screen 'A' ( which is main screen of the app ) 2. Go back to Screen 'B' ( from where the user requested to send a mail to his frnd ). Now the strange part i cannot declare the variables ( Screen 'A' and 'B' ) of both these files here at in header file of screen 'C' . Even when i declare the header file at the top it generates an error. The variables can be easily be declared and used for other screens but not for these 2 screens. • How can I read a DBF file with incorrectly defined column data types using ADO.NET?

  I have a several DBF files generated by a third party that I need to be able to query. I am having trouble because all of the column types have been defined as characters, but the data within some of these fields actually contain binary data. If I try to read these fields using an OleDbDataReader as anything other than a string or character array, I get an InvalidCastException thrown, but I need to be able to read them as a binary value or at least cast/convert them after they are read. The columns that actually DO contain text are being returned as expected. For example, the very first column is defined as a character field with a length of 2 bytes, but the field contains a 16-bit integer. I have written the following test code to read the first column and convert it to the appropriate data type, but the value is not coming out right. The first row of the database has a value of 17365 (0x43D5) in the first column. Running the following code, what I end up getting is 17215 (0x433F). I'm pretty sure it has to do with using the ASCII encoding to get the bytes from the string returned by the data reader, but I'm not sure of another way to get the value into the format that I need, other that to write my own DBF reader and bypass ADO.NET altogether which I don't want to do unless I absolutely have to. • Sharepoint BDC Error: The title property of entity tblStaff is set to an invalid value

  I am just starting to create our Business Data Catalog(s) for our practice management system and I am running into an issue w/ our staff table. Background: I am using Business Data Catalog Definition Editor to create my ADF. I am using the RevertToSelf Authentication Mode. I have tried a few other tables and they seem to work just fine thus far.. only issue is w/ the staff table. If I removed all the columns for the staff entity except the ID and a few columns for the name it actually works. So it has a problem w/ one of my columns in tblStaff. I receive this error even when I set up an ADF w/ just this one entity. So w/ no associations.. When attempting to view the record: http://servername/ssp/admin/Content/tblstaff.aspx?StaffID={0} w/ {0} replaced w/ an actual staff ID I get the following error: The title property of entity tblStaff is set to an invalid value. Things I have tried: I noticed that I do have a column in my staff table called "Title" and removed it from ADF w/ no luck... Same error.. I tried to use bdc meta man to create my ADF and I got the same error... Any ideas? Chris

• How to Write to a User.Config file through ConfigurationManager?

  I'm trying to persist user settings to a configuration file using ConfigurationManager. I want to scope these settings to the user only, because application changes can't be saved on Vista/Win 7 without admin privileges. This seems to get me the user's configuration, which appears to be saved here in Win 7 ([Drive]:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\[ApplicationName]\[AssemblyName][hash]\[Version\) Configuration config = ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(ConfigurationUserLevel.PerUserRoamingAndLocal); Whenever I try to save any changes at all to this config I get this exception: InnerException: System.InvalidOperationException Message="ConfigurationSection properties cannot be edited when locked." Source="System.Configuration" StackTrace: at System.Configuration.SectionInformation.VerifyIsEditable() at System.Configuration.MgmtConfigurationRecord.GetConfigDefinitionUpdates(Boolean requireUpdates, ConfigurationSaveMode saveMode, Boolean forceSaveAll, ConfigDefinitionUpdates& definitionUpdates, ArrayList& configSourceUpdates) I have tried adding a custom ConfigurationSection to this config. I have tried adding to the AppSettingsSection. Whenever I call config.Save() it throws the exception above. Any ideas? I tried using the ApplicationSettingsBase class through the Project-Settings designer, but it doesn't appear that you can save custom types with this. I want similar functionality with the ability to save custom types. Thanks.

• Does DefaultAppPool run with special elevated privilegs on IIS?

  I'm running a piece of code within a web page that queries the IIS metabase using ADSI. The code is as simple as this: DirectoryEntry iisNode = new DirectoryEntry("/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT/MyAspWebsite-1-128886021498831845"); foreach (DirectoryEntry de in iisNode.Parent.Children) { System.Console.WriteLine(de.Name); } This works fine when I run the page/site under the DefaultAppPool on IIS7/W2K8. However when I create my own app pool and leave the properties the same as the default app pool, this code fails with the following error: Caught: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException Failed to parse virtual directory: /LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT/MyAspWebsite-1-128889542757187500 System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80070005): Access is denied. What special privileges does the DefaultAppPool have? I don't see any documented. I need this to work in non default app pools, but without giving the entire worker process elevated privileges. I've also tried using the username and password parameters of the DirectoryEntry constructor, by using the Admin on the machine that IIS7 is running on, but that didn't change anything. I'll also note that this works fine on IIS6 and W2K3. Any help is appreciated.

• Sharepoint isn't accepting new Credentials initially when switching users.

  Hi all, I have a standard website (one webapplication and one site collection) with some custom pages and webparts. The issue I'm having is that when I try to switch users, using the "Sign In As a Different User" and entering new credentials (even for another site collection admin account), IE tries the account three times, and then it presents a 401 Access Denied screen. After that, if I erase all the stuff of access denied page from the browser's url, I'm logged as the new account I just had entered and was not accepted. After researching for a while on google, I found a KB ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970814 ) that might relate, but just tested here and it didn't work at all. • CSS menu broken in Firefox (display:table-cell;)

I'd rather fix the CSS to make it show correctly.

Manufacturers and transporters are related with has_many :through many-to-many association with products as follows: class Manufacturer < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :products has_many :transporters, :through => :products end class Product < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :manufacturer belongs_to :transporter end class Transporter < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :products has_many :manufacturers, :through => :products end All four user types will be able to login, but they will have different permissions and views, etc. I don't think I can put them in the same table (Users), however, because they will have different requirements, ie: vendors and manufacturers must have a billing address and contact info (through validations), but admins and employees should not have these fields. If possible, I would like to have a single login screen as opposed to 4 different screens. I'm not asking for the exact code to build this, but I'm having trouble determining the best way to make it happen. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

• TFS and Forms Authentication

  I don't know squat about TFS, other than as a user who has performed simple check in/outs. I just installed it locally and would like to do joint development with a friend. I was having trouble making my TFS web site on port 8080 visible (the whole scoop is here if your interested) and I wonder if it could be related to the fact that TFS is probably using Windows Authentication to identify the user. Can TFS be set up to use forms authentication? We probably need to set up a VPN, though that's a learning curve too. To use TFS, do our machines have to belong to a domain? We're not admin types, though he is better than me, though I would be interested in any feedback or advice on which path is likely to pan out the best. I already got AxoSoft OneTime working in this type of an environment and it suits us well, but I am tempted at all the bells & whistles with TFS and the ability to tie tracked bug items to code changes. As far as finding a good way to share code, do sites like SourceForge allow one to keep code secure among members only?

• Datastore performance, my code or the datastore latency

  I had for the last month a bit of a problem with a quite basic datastore query. It involves 2 db.Models with one referring to the other with a db.ReferenceProperty. The problem is that according to the admin logs the request takes about 2-4 seconds to complete. I strip it down to a bare form and a list to display the results. The put works fine, but the get accumulates (in my opinion) way to much cpu time. #The get look like this: outputData['items'] = {} labelsData = Label.all() for label in labelsData: labelItem = label.item.name if labelItem not in outputData['items']: outputData['items'][labelItem] = { 'item' : labelItem, 'labels' : [] } outputData['items'][labelItem]['labels'].append(label.text) path = os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__), 'index.html') self.response.out.write(template.render(path, outputData)) #And the models: class Item(db.Model): name = db.StringProperty() class Label(db.Model): text = db.StringProperty() lang = db.StringProperty() item = db.ReferenceProperty(Item) I've tried to make it a number of different way ie. instead of ReferenceProperty storing all Label keys in the Item Model as a db.ListProperty. My test data is just 10 rows in Item and 40 in Label. So my questions: Is it a fools errand to try to optimize this since the high cpu usage is due to the problems with the datastore or have I just screwed up somewhere in the code? ..fredrik

• Providing File permissions in Installshield

  I have created an installer in Installshield X. I want to give 'write permissions' to few files when the installation is done in Non-Admin Windows accounts ( by default it will have only 'read' permission). If I select individual file and go to properties (inside Installshield),i have permissions tab where they have provided options like Domain , Readonly, Full Control, Modify etc. I have tested these options but it doesn't effect the msi file.(specific files doesn't have write permission). Is there something wrong I am doing?
