• How long will a USB key with an OS installed on it last?

  I've heard numerous times that installing an OS on a USB key is a bad thing to do, as USBs typically have a certain number of writes before dying, and installing an OS on it will wear it out (unless it's used sporadically for rescue purposes). Nonetheless, I am very tempted to install some flavour of Linux (Ubuntu or Arch, I haven't decided yet) on a small, transportable, USB Key. My problem is, although you read a lot that it's "bad", you are never told how bad. How long would it last (provided, say, a pc that is 24/7 on)? A month? A year? Five years? Is there recipes to make it last longer? Is there any reason beside weariness that should prevent me from attempting this? I mean, if it can be calculated, then I could theoretically shield myself by doing regular backups on another key when the deadline gets close (for example). Notes I am not talking of using a USB as a live CD, but actually installing the OS on it.) When I say "USB Key", I refer to the little USBs with a flash memory, not an external USB hard drive. For the curious, my reason is that I work in a lot of different places, on different PCs, and I have a very customized session, with my own WM, my own key bindings, my own scripts, , a selection of plugins for firefox and chrome, etc, and currently I am synchronizing all this through a mix of dropbox, git, and transporting files on USBs, and and it's becoming a chore. It would be much simpler for me to just plug the USB and mount the hard disk of the PC I am using and use it's processing power without actually needing to install any OS on it.

• Automated software installation for MS Windows?

  I am currently setting up a Windows development environment (the whole Visual Studio 2010 stack plus plugins on top of Windows 7). This has got me wondering whether there's a Windows equivalent to what I do for dev environment setup in Ubuntu. It takes literally hours to get a dev environment set up in Windows, involving a lot of manual intervention. On Ubuntu, I have two shell scripts - one I run as root which configures the system using apt-get (amongst other things), one I run as me which configures my user account. Those scripts live in my private Subversion repository. To set up a dev environment from scratch requires five commands: sudo apt-get install -y subversion svn co http://svn.XXXX.XXX/personal/ cd personal sudo ./ubuntu_setup_root.sh ./ubuntu_setup_user.sh The only human intervention required is to pick a root password for MySQL. So it takes only a few minutes of human attention to go from a vanilla Ubuntu installation to a full development environment with the latest builds of everything, perfectly tailored down to shortcut keys and wallpaper. Is there an equivalent process for Windows? In an ideal world it'd be something trivially scriptable using C# Script or Powershell, which could live in source control & make use of a repository of ISOs downloaded from MSDN ...

  I'm the digital guru in my household. My wife is good with email and forum websites but she trusts me with all our important digital stuff -- such as online banking and other things that require passwords, but also family photos and the plethora of other digital things in a modern home. We discuss relevant actions but it's always me that executes the actions. If I should get "hit by a bus" then my wife would be thoroughly stranded -- she would have no idea what digital stuff is where on our computer, how to access it, what online accounts we have, and their login credentials are. It would also leave my many public appearances (personal websites, email accounts, social networks, etc.) unresolved. To complicate things, I'm one of those people who don't use password as my password everywhere; I use a mix of SuperGenPass and LastPass, and also two-factor authentication whenever possible. I don't have much hope that she would find her way through a written explanation of all that in a stressful situation. I could just tell her that she should ask my tech-savvy twin brother and then entrust him with my LastPass master passphrase. I feel that would have a high chance of success, but it's inelegant and leaves my wife without control of the information. How can I ensure that my wife has access to my digital remains?

• What is the latest on Microsoft Expressoin Studio licensing?

  In the past, there's been an issue with Microsoft not allowing you to deactivate an Expression Studio key. Basically, you get two keys per license. If you assign both keys (say one to a desktop and one to a laptop), then you upgrade to a new machine (say you replace your laptop or upgrade some of the hardware), you have to buy a new copy of Expression Studio ($600 for Ultimate). This seems ludicrous to me, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if this policy is still in place. I can't seem to find a EULA online anywhere, so I don't know where to find this information. I know my laptop is due for replacement soon, and I want to know if I'm going to have to sink $600 into a software product I already purchased. • How should I monitor memory usage/performance in SunOS/Solaris?

  Last week we decided to add some SunOS (uname -a = SunOS bbs-sam-belair 5.10 Generic_127128-11 i86pc i386 i86pc) machines into our running munin instance. First off, the machines are pre-configured appliances, so, I want to avoid touching the system too much without supervision of the service provider. But adding it to munin was fairly easy by writing a small socket-service (if anyone is interested, I put it up on github: https://github.com/munin-monitoring/contrib/tree/master/tools/pypmmn) Yesterday, I implemented/adapted the required plugins for our machines. And here the questions start: First, I have not found a way to determine detailed memory usage values. I get the total memory by running prtconf | grep Memory, and the free memory using vmstat. Fiddling together a munin-plugin, gives me the following graph: This is pretty much uninformative. Compare this to the default plugin for linux nodes which has a lot more detail: Most importantly, this shows me how much memory is actually used by applications. So, first question: Is it possible to get detailed memory information on SunOS with the default system tools (i.e. not using top)? Onto the next puzzle: Seeing the graphs, I noticed activity in the "Paging in/out" graphs, even though the memory graph still has unused memory: Upon further investigation, I found out that df reports that /tmp is mounted on swap. Drilling around on the web, I understood that df will display swap, but in fact, it's mounted as a tmpfs. Now I don't know if this explains the swap activity. The default munin-plugin for solaris uses kstat -p -c misc -m cpu_stat to get these values. I find it already strange that this is using the cpu_stat module. So maybe I simply misinterpret the "paging" graphs? Second question: Do the paging graphs indicate that parts of the memory are paged to disk? Or is the activity caused by file operations in /tmp?

  I'm querying some signal level values measured in dBm, and the SNMP host on the remove device reports the values as negative values, ie, -90 dBm. However, check-snmp seems to be incapable of dealing with negative numbers as part of its threshold values. • URL sniffer/downloader

  Some websites have Flash content that plays music or videos. Most of the time they don't show you the URL of these music or videos, but for example, you can sniff a YouTube webpage and find the flv file that YouTube is actually requesting and playing. Right now I'm using Orbit Downloader, which has a feature called Grab++ that does just this; you start it, and then you refresh the page, and it shows you all files of certain types (image, audio, video) that the webpage requests, and then you can select one or more and download and it downloads them. But, I don't like Orbit, it installs plugins and has the whole download manager thing which I don't really want. What is a good alternative program? I'm not looking for websites like kickyoutube.com, I want a URL sniffer I guess. HTTPGuideDog used to be my Firefox add-on that did exactly this, but it hasn't been updated even to FF3 (and yes I know I can hack it to load anyway, I'm looking for something natively available preferably). I vaguely know of WireShark but last time I used it, I believe it captures individual packets, which is a little too fine-tuned for me. I just want to be able to see what's happening, and download something that the webpage downloaded. Oh, and I'm using Windows 7. Linux probably has some fancy command-line tool, but it just won't cut it for me. :-\ Edit: Oh, and something free please. Feel free to mention paid solutions though.

• Installing Joomla on Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7.0

  Hi, I have been spending the past while trying to install Joomla on a server running Windows Server 2008. I have successfully installed PHP (using Microsoft's web tool for installing PHP with IIS) and MySQL and am now trying to run the browser-based installation. Everything comes up green, I fill in the appropriate information regarding the site name, MySQL information, etc. and no errors are thrown. However, when I get to the step that asks me to remove the installation directory, I am unable to do so as Windows states it is in use by another program (I cannot fathom how this is true). Also, there is no configuration.php file that is created so if I were to manage to delete this folder I have a feeling that there would be problems. I was thinking there was some kind of a permissions issue and have set the permissions for IIS_IUSRS to have read, write, and execute permissions for the entire folder that Joomla resides in but this has not helped. Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated. ;) Greg EDIT: I decided to try and manually install Joomla by manually editing the configuration.php file. This has worked great and now I am certain there is some kind of a permissions issue going on because I am able to do everything that involves the MySQL database (create an article, edit menu items, etc.), but anything that involves making changes to Joomla installation's directory does not work (install plugins, edit configuration settings using the Global Configuration menu within Joomla, etc.) I have granted IIS_IUSRS every permission except Full Control (reading on the Joomla! forums shows that this should be enough for everything to work). This is confusing to me and I am quite stuck on this problem. EDIT 2: The bizarre thing is that in the System Info under Directory Permissions, everything turns up as Writable but then whenever I try to actually use Joomla to, for example, edit the configuration.php file using the interface, it says it is unable to edit the file.

• Yum Error Installing Git from kernel.org Repo

  I want to install the latest version of Git using yum and the RPM repository on kernel.org, but adding the repo to yum.repos.d causes yum to fail with checksum errors. The prevailing solution to this issue seems to be to simply use the repository at Webtatic as answered here on superuser. I know I can also install an older version of Git using the EPEL repo, or compile from the latest source tarball, but honestly I want to understand why I'm having issues using the kernel.org repo. • Configuring CakePHP on Hostgator

  I have absolutely no idea what I am doing wrong here. I have followed just about every guide there is with installing cakephp on shared hosting and I am still having problems. I have also started over each time when following a guide. Maybe someone can help me out here as I am out of options. Here is my current setup: / app webroot vendors lib cake public_html .htaccess index.php plugins I have configured the index.php file in the public_html to point to the correct files. I have also done this in the index.php file located in webroot folder. I am getting an Internal 500 server error and it says to check my logs for what the error specifically is. However there are no logs being generated. I removed the .htaccess file from the public_html folder and I get the following errors: Warning: require(/app/webroot/index.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/user/public_html/index.php on line 40 Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/app/webroot/index.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/user/public_html/index.php on line 40 line 40 is require APP_DIR . • How to add a privilege to an account in Windows?

  Given: A VM running Windows 2008 I am logged on there using my domain account (SHUNRANET\markk) I have added the "Create global objects" privilege to my domain account: The VM is restarted (I know logout/logon is enough, but I had to restart) I logon again using the same domain account. It seems still to have the privilege: I run some process and examine its Security properties using the Process Explorer. The account does not seem to have the privilege: This is not an idle curiousity. I have a real problem, that without this privilege the named pipe WCF binding works neither on Windows 2008 nor on Windows 7! EDIT BTW, when I run the process elevated, everything is fine and the process explorer does display the privilege as expected: But I do not want to run it elevated. I am yet to determine the relevance of it, but it looks promising. • Allow opening a new tab with Ctrl+T on all websites in Firefox

  In Firefox, certain websites and plugins (Adobe PDF Plugin) appear to "capture" the Control key, so that when I try to open a new tab using "Ctrl+t", nothing happens - or worse, something unexpected happens. Examples: On the Codecademy site, while editing code, Ctrl+T either does nothing, or (when Flash is disabled) switches the position of the two characters next to the cursor. When viewing PDF's with the Adobe PDF Plugin, Ctrl+T does nothing. Is there a way to disable this "feature"? I would like "Ctrl+t" to always "talk" to Firefox! Edit: After searching superuser deeper, this question is very similar to the questions: "How to prevent keystroke grabbing/hijacking by websites in Firefox?" "How do I prevent pages I visit from overriding selected Firefox shortcut keys?". The answers to these questions are interesting and relevant, but do not give a method on how to disable combinatinos such as "Ctrl+t". Maybe a modified Greasemonkey script is the easiest solultion. Edit 2 - Attempt at a solution The following UserScript (Use GreaseMonkey to install it) successfully captures Ctrl+t on some sites (Google Search site, for instance - PopUp "Gotcha" appears), but not on the Codecademy site. I found another question pertaining to this subject here: "How to forbid keyboard shortcut stealing by websites in Firefox".
