• Is there a postfix mysql virtual_maps append_at_origin workaround so I can pipe to external scripts?

  I am using virtual domains, and I'd like to setup the server to alias to custom scripts. I manage all accounts using postfix mappings to mysql. It seems that postfix automatically appends a virtual domain regardless of how the forwarded/aliased result comes back. So even though i have: "|/bin/command" postfix is reading it as: "|/bin/command"@mydomain.com Is there any work-around, or setting I can fix? It would seem than append_at_myorigin=no would be ideal, but that's unsupported according to the documentation. Another option, maybe I can skip virtual aliases altogether and use the "/etc/postfix/aliases" table - assuming all emails go to the main domain. I'll try this, but if anyone has any other ideas how to make it work with virtual domains, please let me know as this would be very useful! Thanks.

• Why won't Webmaster Tools let me set a preferred domain? (says to verify, but it should already be)

  I've got a domain that I apparently forgot to set a preferred domain for, so I just tried to do it. Webmaster Tools instead popped up a little box: Part of the process of setting a preferred domain is to verify that you own http://www.example.com/. Please verify http://www.example.com/. I'm running into some problems following these instructions: As far as I can tell I already did verify sometime in the past. There's a TXT DNS record with the gibberish Google tells you to set for it that I couldn't have come up with myself. …and nothing is telling me this information is bad. So let's assume the site is somehow not actually verified. All the various methods' instructions start with "click the Manage Site button next to the site you want, and then click Verify this site." That button doesn't even exist on my screens. (It presumably goes away when you successfully verify?) Those instructions were all updated pretty recently, and the DNS one in particular just a couple weeks ago so it seems a bit unlikely they're inaccurate. I am not using Apps, and won't be, so can't try out the verification through there. Note that I also have another domain that I have not done any verification for which is showing the same behavior(no such button, being told to verify when it seems impossible etc.) so something appears to just be broken. I already have a no-www process in place server-side, so we can skip that. I'm just trying to get the box checked off in GWT. If I don't get any resolution, I'll eventually scrap the TXT record and see if the site gets un-verified(or whatever since it thinks it isn't), and see if I can just restart the process. It's not urgent so I'm just trying to figure out if I've gone blind to something or what. Did the button move?

• I need to make Windows 7 STOP disabling the wifi adapter when the wired LAN is connected

  This is a Dell Latitude E6430. There is a setting in the bios to control this behavior and I have DISABLED it but it still happens. I am also running the latest bios. When I plug in a network cable the wifi adapter becomes disabled. I need it to stay enabled. What else could be making this happen? EDIT: The reason I need to do this is because with NETSH WLAN commands you can create a wifi hotspot by sharing the internet connection on the wired adapter and broadcasting a ssid on the virtual wifi nic. I do this all the time but it's not working on this laptop. I'm wondering if it's a network security thing where I am. I'm going to try from my hotel tonight and report back.

• Windows XP: How to boot up in normal mode after improper shut down?

  I work in two different locations and whenever there is a power outage at one of the locations, Windows XP detects that the system was improperly shutdown. Once the power is up, the PC powers on and Windows XP enters REPAIR/SAFE mode where only someone physically in front of the PC can control it. (Networking is all disabled in this mode) Now before it enters REPAIR/SAFE mode, there is an option for a NORMAL boot. But the catch is that REPAIR/SAFE mode is selected by default with a 30 second timer. Once it automatically enters REPAIR/SAFE mode and if nobody is at the other location, I have no way to remote control it anymore. And then I have to drive over to the other location and reboot it and select boot into NORMAL mode. Where can I change this setting so that Windows XP always boots into NORMAL mode no matter how many times it is improperly shut down?

• Hiding samba share from browse list for unauthorised users

  Hey Guys, I have been trying to setup my samba shares correctly. The setup i was looking for was having a couple of shares available publicly, guest accounts are ok and can browse these shares all ok. I have this setup correctly. The problem comes when setting up a share that only certain users can view, although i have setup a share that will only allow certain users to access. I havent been able to hide this share from guests. I had a look into the browseable = yes option but this hides it from everyone, including the users that have logged in. Any idea on how to tackle this? • FFMPEG Splitting MP4 with Same Quality

  I have one large MP4 file. I am attempting to split it into smaller files. ffmpeg -i largefile.mp4 -sameq -ss 00:00:00 -t 00:50:00 smallfile.mp4 I thought using -sameq would keep the same quality settings. However, I must not understand what that does. I'm looking to keep the same quality (audio/video) and compression with the split files. However, this setting makes the split files much larger. What flag(s) do I need to set to keep the same quality and attributes in the split files while maintaining the same quality to size ratio? For instance if my original file is about 12 GB and is 1920x1080 with a bitrate of 10617kbps and a framerate of 23 frames/sec and 6 channel audio with 317kbps, I would like the split files to be the same only a third of this size (if i split it into three pieces).

  I have two redundant core switches I want to connect to a new vSwitch I am setting up on a VMware ESX host. The switch will have two physical NICs each of which will connect to one of the core switches. The core switches are connected. If this was a physical switch, I would worry about connecting it to both core switches, because this would create a network loop. Do I need to worry about this for a VMware virtual switch? VMware's documentation says it is not possible to connect two vSwitches in a loop, therefore STP is not required. However, I am worried about connecting two physical switches together via a vSwitch.

• Is there anyway that I can set the 'real' memory usage value while running my java code?

  I'm running a code on a server to generate a 10,000x10,000 matrix and save each value into a table (MySQL). I was informed by the administrator that I can use up to 32g of the physical memory of our server but have no idea how to do it. I googling around and so far only found information about setting the virtual memory using -Xmx. I tried it anyway and using top command I got this: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 3981 gv 35 15 32.4g 304m 10m S 1 0.5 9:54.84 java So, it shows that the -Xmx set the VIRT and not the RES value. Is there anyway that I can set the RES value into 32g?

• How to schedule download of windows 7 updates?

  To put it short: I'd like to schedule my windows updates to start/stop at certain times of day. How can I do this? More explanation: This is because my internet traffic is limited by ISP and it's free only during a specific period throughout the day (2:00am-7:00am). I've set windows update setting to check for updates but notify me before downloading in order to prevent it from automatically using up my traffic. But then I have to manually tell it when to start downloading. I obviously don't want to stay up that late just to push a button. So again, how can I schedule windows updates to start/stop at specified times?

• Mouse pointer size inconsistent

  Since installing Ubuntu 12.04, I've been having a problem with the mouse pointer size. On the desktop, it is quite a bit larger than it should be (24), though the different cursors (editing text, hyperlink hand, etc) are correct. The size changes to the correct size when the pointer is over some application windows (GVim, Netbeans, Firefox), but then changes back once it is moved out of the window. There was a similar question here, but the Xdefaults solution did not work for me, and I didn't want to try the one requiring editing the icon image. In addition, I've tried changing the cursor theme using sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme as well as using the dconf-editor, but though I can change the theme, the size issue remains. In case it's relevant, I'm running on a dual-screen setup with monitor sizes of 2560x1600 and 1920x1080, using the NVidia video driver. Is there another way to control pointer size, or a setting that might be messing it up? EDIT: These are the values/options I have for update-alternatives and in dconf-editor. • Apache Tomcat - Responding for IP However Not for Domain

  I have just started setting up a VPS. I installed Tomcat to deploy some test applications on. The problem I am having is the following. An 'A' record has been setup for my website's primary domain as vps.mydomain.com. This is resolving fine for SSH and TS3. When it comes to Tomcat, using vps.mydomain.com:8080 does not result in the default landing page. However, 111.222.333.444:8080 does load the default Tomcat page. I read through the manual and within the server.xml added an Alias; this however has not had any effect. Is there any trickery required in order to get Tomcat to serve my applications or is this likely to be some kind of filtering mechanism for requests placed upon me by my hosting provider?

• MongoDB PHP EC2 Setup Configuration

  I am new to web development and server set up. I am looking for some advice or a link to a tutorial on setting up a production system up. Right now, I have a server (Ubuntu, Apache, MongoDB, and PHP). It receives a request, PHP queries Mongo, and PHP sends out the requested data. How do I make that work with more servers? I've read that you can make a cluster of a primary and two slave nodes which work as separate servers running Mongo, but do those also run PHP? Or is the primary the only one running the PHP? I have read some docs on Mongo site and a video of someone from 10gen going through it, but they are geared towards people that seem to already understand this stuff, I have no idea and need to start from a beginning stage. If anyone can help me understand where PHP (Acting as my API) lives in these clusters, that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for any help!

• Remote desktop auto start session on workstation login

  I am setting up Remote Desktop Services for use by one of our remote offices. The workstations at the remote office are all Windows 7 Pro, joined to the domain. There is nothing installed on the local workstation othern than the Win7 OS. The remote and main office are linked via VPN. The workers will login to the local workstation, using their domain login, then right now double click an icon on the desktop which will do the RDP to the Remote Desktop Server. This does work fine, but requires some user education. Is there a way that when the user logs into the local workstation, it will start the RDP session right away and pass their username/password through as well? Would using a thin client PC do what I am asking? Thanks.

• Slow speed for UFS mounted drive in Linux

  Hi, I have a disk that has Sun OS disk, (ufs filesystem). And I want to mount it in my debain machine with read/write mode. Since by deafult linux doesn't support write to ufs filesystem. I had to recompile the kernel by setting to the flag CONFIG_UFS_FS_WRITE=y. Now I am able to write to the filesystem, but the read/write speed is very slow. It is around 120 KB/s. Any idea what is wrong and how to resolve this issue? Thank you in advance.

• Is it possible to host a website with Apache HTTP through a ZyXEL EQ-660R modem and a Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router?

  Essentially, I have a spare desktop computer I'd like to turn into a web server, but my modem and wireless router are very difficult to work with. I installed Apache HTTP and successfully hosted a test page which can be accessed anywhere on the LAN. However, I'm having trouble setting up the server to be accessed from my external IP address. I was supplied with a ZyXEL EQ-660R DSL modem by my ISP (CenturyLink) and bought a Netgear WGT624v3 wireless router in which to connect my laptop and spare desktop. ZyXEL's website is no help, and I don't think much of the problem is with the Netgear router. I've played with many settings and have tried to forward port 80 from the modem, but I've had no luck. Could someone direct me toward a solution or recommendations for more promising hardware? Or should I admit defeat and explore other hobbies? :)

• Screen refresh/display problem in Xubuntu 14.04

  I have just installed Xubuntu 14.04 as a dual boot on a desk top (Pentium R 4 CPU, 2.66 GHZ, 2G RAM) running XP home edition. In some situations when in Xubuntu I am having what seem to be screen refresh problems. When I open File Manager or Settings Manager the text names of various apps display but most of the icons do not. Moving the mouse over an app name generally causes the icon to appear, but it often vanishes once the mouse pointer is moved. This issue occurs irrespective of the view setting. Icons appear fine in the menu that comes up when I right click in the desktop, and in the menu that comes up when I click the mouse icon at top left. What I suspect is a related issue. In Abiword text sometimes fades, disappears or does not display immediately when I type, or text of the whole document fades. It then comes back or darkens if I left click a few times on the text. If I scroll through a document the text often fades and may remain faded until I left click a few times.

I have background in many fields on Computer Science but never got to focus on networking, server management, etc. What I'm asking is for recommended books, Basically, I would like to be able to be proficient and understand well how to manage domain names, zones, setting up mail servers, being able to install easily any web server, and such. Everything needed for proper server management through the shell. I will probably stick with Parallels, or Cpanel for a bit. But I dislike those, especially how it add a lot of intruding user accounts and configs on the file system. Thank you

  I am looking to set up a small network for a client which would be isolated from his primary network. (I'm hoping to set-up the additional network as VMs on the primary network.) I've instructed the client to request a bunch of static ip addresses from his ISP, but I'm not sure how to proceed with setting this up. What hardware will I need and how do I go about the configuration? Heavy security is not my concern. All that's really required is that web requests from the two networks be presented to the outside world with different ip addresses.

  I have a serve running centOS and I'd like to have the following setup: The server needs to have a static ip and be accessible by name. What I want is independently of the network being able to connect the server to the network and access it by name on Firefox as it will be running a web page. I tried setting the ip manually but while the inet addr is set as I want it the Bcast isn't. And I only can ping the server on the Bcast ip and because it is 192.168.2.255 ssh says it's not valid.

• IIS asks for login/pass when accessed using hostname but not when ‘localhost’ is used. Why?

  Hi All, I have setup IIS on my xp machine and have setup a default homepage (that comes with the IIS installed). It is a help page I think. when I access the page with http : // localhost it works fine (IE/Chrome or FF) but when I access it using http://hostname it prompts for a loging/password and works when I enter my domain id and password on the intranet. I have ensured that "anonymous access" is enabled in the properties window of the default site and "websites" node. I searched stack overflow for similar queries but some indicate I need to change the IE/FF settings to allow "integrated security" etc and some suggest to look at the "log file". I don't want to change the IE setting and there is nothing unusual in the log file of the IIS Server. Can anybody help me figure out why this is happening? thank you sb

• Is it okay to just add a page or two PHP page to add some functionality to a Drupal site?

  I'm not familiar with Drupal, really. I can dig around the admin interface and navigate the directories and find the files that I need to just fine as well. What I'm really not familiar with is adding modules or extending modules. The site currently takes an order and sets up recurring payments through Ubercart and uses Authorize.net as a gateway. Right now, when a payment fails, a single e-mail gets sent out to the admin. We'd like to extend it to send an e-mail to the user and let them change their payment information through another page on the site. Authorize has a service called Silent Post URL that basically just posts a carbon copy in XML to whatever URL you give it. We'd like to accept that XML, deserialize it, parse the data, send a notice to the user and give them the page for updating their information. So, I guess it'll be two PHP pages. One for the XML API call from Authorize.net, and then one for the page for the users' to update their payment information. Could I just create two simple pages each handling their own tasks, or should I check out properly extending a module? If it's appropriate for me to write up the pages and not have to hook them into the module, what would be the best way to handle setting up what needs to get done? (The most experience I've had with extending a PHP site has been hacking away at someone else' poorly constructed, custom framework, so if anyone has any good resources perhaps on PHP best practices that they could share through a PM or a comment, I'd appreciate It) (Also, I'm still getting the hang of Stack Exchange, so if this isn't appropriate please let me know. • CCMoveBy values on update()

  Hope you can help me. This is my problem: I have a scheduled update, here I track the movements of my objects (sprites), I move them with CCMoveBy, and I need to constantly update the zOrder. For setting the zOrder I've made a setZOrder(), which it takes the actual position of the sprite. And here is the problem, I get all the X and Y values AFTER the object is in the target. I know I get the values after the object is in the new position because I've made a CCLog. I can read all the values from the sprite, only when it's in the new position, so everything is well sorted only when the objects are not moving. How can I get the CCMoveBy values on every tick update? (or how can I get the CCMoveBy values in "real-time"?) • parallel vms in VMWare Server - how to configure network so they can ping each other?

  I'm using VMWare Server (currently on Version 1.0.7) and have two VMs that I would like to run at the same time. However, I'm having problems in setting them up so they can ping each other. I've configured them to use 'Bridged' networking. They both obtain an IP address from the DHCP server on my network, but after that they can't ping each other. It seems that only the first one has a functioning network connection (I can ping it from the host machine and Internet connection works), but the other one does not. If it helps, both VMs are running XP SP 3. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Queue emails under linux

  I have a slow distant mail relay server and a web application I'm using locks up when sending e-mails to that distant mail server, until the e-mail is sent. After the e-mail is sent the page comes back and the application is snappy again. SO I'm trying to set up a differed mail queue locally on the application server (linux) so that the application uses that instead of the distant mail server. My rationale is that e-mails would get queued up locally until they are processed by the distant mail server, but at least the application doesn't lock up. I have installed postfix and set up the relayhost setting to the distant mail server, but performance has not improved. What appears to happen is that postfix just forwards my SMTP instructions in real time and doesn't really queue them? What can I do? Thanks!

• Fourth texture = segmentation fault

  I keep on getting segmentation fault each time I load fourth texture - what type of texture, I mean filename, does not matter. I checked value of GL_TEXTURES_STACK_SIZE which turned out to be 10 so quite more than 4, isn't it?
