  • this == null; surely not, but yes

    - by pm100
I would have said that this will segfault but apparently not #include <stdio.h> class foo { public: bool thingy() {return this == 0;}; }; int main() { foo *f = 0; if(f->thingy()) printf("eating hat\n"); } I just expect that 0-xxx will never work. I assume that if we had to do some vtabling it would fail; obviously cannot access any member variables either edit; sorry - no question there. THe question is "are you surprised like me?" and it seems the answer is yes. even though nobody said yes. I got a) of course this will work b) of course this will never work c) it is undefined behavior; your mileage will vary

  • django image managment

    - by Andrey
I'am new in django. In my project I'am working with images. I don't know how to organize the management of images. I need to dynamically upload the pictures and resize them. First question - what is the best way to dynamically upload images with progress bar and without flash? I found this and this, but I believe there is a better way. Second question. I have to save one image in different sizes. I won't use these thumbnails on my pages, but another application will. Many clients could upload images at the same time. This means that I can not resize all the images at the same time. How should I organize this process? Is there are a better ready-to-use solution for image management issue?

  • What is a good way of coding a file processing program, which accepts multisource data in Java

    - by jjepsuomi
I'm making a data prosessing system, which currently is using csv-data as input and output form. In the future I might want to add support for example database-, xml-, etc. typed input and output forms. How should I desing my program so that it would be easy to add support for new type of data sources? Should simply make for example an abstract data class (which would contain the basic file prosessing methods) and then inherit this class for database, xml, etc. cases? Hope my question is clear =) In other words my question is: "How to desing a file prosessing system, which can be easily updated to accept input data from different sources (database, XML, Excel, etc.)".

  • how to bind parameters correctly in example below in mysqli?

    - by user1421767
    In old mysql code, I had a query below which worked perfectly which is below: $questioncontent = (isset($_GET['questioncontent'])) ? $_GET['questioncontent'] : ''; $searchquestion = $questioncontent; $terms = explode(" ", $searchquestion); $questionquery = " SELECT q.QuestionId, q.QuestionContent, o.OptionType, an.Answer, r.ReplyType, FROM Answer an INNER JOIN Question q ON q.AnswerId = an.AnswerId JOIN Reply r ON q.ReplyId = r.ReplyId JOIN Option_Table o ON q.OptionId = o.OptionId WHERE "; foreach ($terms as $each) { $i++; if ($i == 1){ $questionquery .= "q.QuestionContent LIKE `%$each%` "; } else { $questionquery .= "OR q.QuestionContent LIKE `%$each%` "; } } $questionquery .= "GROUP BY q.QuestionId, q.SessionId ORDER BY "; $i = 0; foreach ($terms as $each) { $i++; if ($i != 1) $questionquery .= "+"; $questionquery .= "IF(q.QuestionContent LIKE `%$each%` ,1,0)"; } $questionquery .= " DESC "; But since that old mysql is fading away that people are saying to use PDO or mysqli (Can't use PDO because of version of php I have currently got), I tried changing my code to mysqli, but this is giving me problems. In the code below I have left out the bind_params command, my question is that how do I bind the parameters in the query below? It needs to be able to bind multiple $each because the user is able to type in multiple terms, and each $each is classed as a term. Below is current mysqli code on the same query: $questioncontent = (isset($_GET['questioncontent'])) ? $_GET['questioncontent'] : ''; $searchquestion = $questioncontent; $terms = explode(" ", $searchquestion); $questionquery = " SELECT q.QuestionId, q.QuestionContent, o.OptionType, an.Answer, r.ReplyType, FROM Answer an INNER JOIN Question q ON q.AnswerId = an.AnswerId JOIN Reply r ON q.ReplyId = r.ReplyId JOIN Option_Table o ON q.OptionId = o.OptionId WHERE "; foreach ($terms as $each) { $i++; if ($i == 1){ $questionquery .= "q.QuestionContent LIKE ? "; } else { $questionquery .= "OR q.QuestionContent LIKE ? "; } } $questionquery .= "GROUP BY q.QuestionId, q.SessionId ORDER BY "; $i = 0; foreach ($terms as $each) { $i++; if ($i != 1) $questionquery .= "+"; $questionquery .= "IF(q.QuestionContent LIKE ? ,1,0)"; } $questionquery .= " DESC "; $stmt=$mysqli->prepare($questionquery); $stmt->execute(); $stmt->bind_result($dbQuestionId,$dbQuestionContent,$dbOptionType,$dbAnswer,$dbReplyType); $questionnum = $stmt->num_rows();

  • Problems getting git 'server' to work on Windows

    - by Benjol
I've followed the Tim's article (mentioned in the answer to this question), but - like many others, it seems - I'm stuck when trying do the test clone at the end. I get the fatal: the remote end hung up unexpectedly error, even though my $HOME path seems to be right. Anyone got any pointers to where I might start for debugging this? My git and linux-fu are severely limited... I'm aware of this answer to the same question, but it doesn't apply in my case, I don't get any messages about paths.

  • Performance: Subquerry or Joining

    - by Auro
HelloHello I got a little Question about Performance of a Subquerry /Joining another table INSERT INTO Original.Person ( PID, Name, Surname, SID ) ( SELECT ma.PID_new , TBL.Name , ma.Surname, TBL.SID FROM Copy.Person TBL , original.MATabelle MA WHERE TBL.PID = p_PID_old AND TBL.PID = MA.PID_old ); This is my SQL, now this thing runs around 1 million times or more. Now my question is what would be faster? if I change TBL.SID to (Select new from helptable where old = tbl.sid) or if I add helptable to the from and do the joining in the where? greets Auro

  • Online webcam chat on web page. Free server and easy-to-implement client?

    - by Oskar Kjellin
I have a client requesting that his users can use their webcams to talk to each other on his web site. From what I've understood the main thing to use for this is Flash. However as I have not written flash I would like to have something really easy to implement. Of course preferrably free (or trial). The idea of this is that everything but the chat alone is in .net. So the users will not use flash until they are actaully going to talk to each other. So there is no use for rooms here. I've been looking into silverlight some as well. But it seems like silverlight does not offer streaming between users..? I know this question has been asked many times here. But I could not find a suitable answer which is why I post a new question.

Okay guys, I need some help. I'm trying to design a page where a user can ask a question and upload up to 4 pictures. I have 2 database tables, questions and image_table. I have everything uploading correctly, so that's not my problem. What I am having trouble doing is selecting images from the image_table database that only correspond to that question. I can't figure out how to do this. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

  • "Send it to a friend" button on a webpage

    - by kender
Hey, How often do we see stuff like "Send this page to a friend" on a webpages? Well, I see them quite often. My question is, how do you guys see it's effectiveness? If I hit a webpage that's interesting, and I think my friend would enjoy it, I can just copy the URL from my browser bar, paste it into the email and press "Send" button. In my opinion, it's usually faster and less mistake-aware then the button/link like this on the webpage. In addition, I'm not really sure what this website does with the emails I enter there - don't they store it and then sell for $1/100 addresses to spammers? My question is - when you design a website, do you put such links on the pages (it's often seen on sites with some news/articles)? Does it even make sense?

  • why doesnt' nhibernate support this "exists in list" syntax ??

    - by ooo
i have the following query and its failing in Nhibernate 3 LINQ witha a "Non supported" exception. Its similar to this question but this question was asked over a year ago so i am positive that the answer is out of date. My DB tables are: VacationRequest (id, personId) VacationRequestDate (id, vacationRequestId) Person (id, FirstName, LastName) My Entities are: VacationRequest (Person, IList) VacationRequestDate (VacationRequest, Date) Here is the query that is getting a "Non supported" Exception Session.Query<VacationRequestDate>() .Where(r => people .Contains(r.VacationRequest.Person, new PersonComparer())) .Fetch(r=>r.VacationRequest) .ToList(); is there a better way to write this that would be supported in Nhibernate? fyi . .the PersonComparer just compared person.Id

    - by purnang.advant
Hi. I am using a treeview in asp.net 3.5(using c#.net),which is populated from sqldatabase. OnTreeNodePopulate event fires this event, protected void tvLabs_TreeNodePopulate(object sender, System.Web.UI.WebControls.TreeNodeEventArgs e) { PopulateSubLevelLab(e.Node.Value, e.Node); //This function is used for populating the child node. FillLabGrid(e.Node.Value);---My Question? } ---My Question? The FillLabGrid method used for fill a grid view on the basis of selecting the treeview parent node. But this function filled the grid only once when i click the parent node for the first time. Secondly when i collapse the treeview and again click on the parent node function (tvLabs_TreeNodePopulate)is not called? Hope you are getting my point. Please advice me. Thanks in advance.

  • How should I initialize jQuery?

    - by Reigel
I have seen this (I'm also using it): $(document).ready(function(){ // do jQuery }) and also this (I have tried lately): (function(){ // do jQuery })(jQuery) both works fine. My question is what is the difference of the two ( except on how it looks ). Which one is more proper to use?. Can you give me some pro's and con's for each? Is there also another way of doing this? (also help me with the title above. SO suggested, "The question you're asking appears subjective and is likely to be closed.") Thanks everyone.

  • Google Play: how dev can give (already purchased) app to customer as a gift?

    - by Tertium
Yes, SO, I know, it's not a "programmer's" question:) But customers sometimes help us (devs) with our code, so we (devs) shold be grateful. I think answer to my question will be useful for all fellow android devs. User has purchased my app. Refund period (15min) is over of course. Now I'd like to return money to him as a gift, because he helped me in testing a little. If I refund the entire order in Checkout-Orders will user keep my app 'purchased'? I mean will he be able to uninstall and install it again from GooglePlay-MyApps and will app be marked "purchased"? Will Google LVL accept him to run the app? I've done such refunds before, but then they called it "Android Market", and refund was 12h, and there were no LVL. Maybe somebody know another way to make a small gift using Google Play?

  • Overhead of serving pages - JSPs vs. PHP vs. ASPXs vs. C

    - by John Shedletsky
I am interested in writing my own internet ad server. I want to serve billions of impressions with as little hardware possible. Which server-side technologies are best suited for this task? I am asking about the relative overhead of serving my ad pages as either pages rendered by PHP, or Java, or .net, or coding Http responses directly in C and writing some multi-socket IO monster to serve requests (I assume this one wins, but if my assumption is wrong, that would actually be most interesting). Obviously all the most efficient optimizations are done at the algorithm level, but I figure there has got to be some speed differences at the end of the day that makes one method of serving ads better than another. How much overhead does something like apache or IIS introduce? There's got to be a ton of extra junk in there I don't need. At some point I guess this is more a question of which platform/language combo is best suited - please excuse the in-adroitly posed question, hopefully you understand what I am trying to get at.

  • Backbone inheritance - deep copying

    - by Ed .
I've seen this question regarding inheritance in Backbone: Backbone.js view inheritance. Useful but doesn't answer my question. The problem I'm experiencing is this: Say I have a class Panel (model in this example); var Panel = Backbone.Model.extend({ defaults : { name : 'my-panel' } }); And then an AdvancedPanel; var AdvancedPanel = Panel.extend({ defaults : { label : 'Click to edit' } }); The following doesn't work: var advancedPanel = new AdvancedPanel(); alert(advancedPanel.get('name')); // Undefined :( JSFiddle here: http://jsfiddle.net/hWmnb/ I guess I can see that I can achieve this myself through some custom extend function that creates a deep copy of the prototype, but this seems like a common thing that people might want from Backbone inheritance, is there a standard way of doing it?

  • How do I do division on HH:MM:SS format time strings in C#?

    - by Jake
I have a series of times that are coming to me as strings from a web service. The times are formated as HH:MM:SS:000 (3 milisecond digits). I need to compare two times to determine if one is more than twice as long as the other: if ( timeA / timeB > 2 ) What's the simplest way to work with the time strings? If I was writing in Python this would be the answer to my question: Difference between two time intervals in Python Edit: What I'm really looking for is a way to get the ratio of timeA to timeB, which requires division, not subtraction. Unfortunately, the DateTime structure doesn't appear to have a division operator. Updated the question title to reflect this.

  • iPhone Accelerometer Values

    - by Mike
My question is about the iPhone accelerometer. Does the accelerometer measure acceleration or movement of the iPhone? What I mean is if I hold the iPhone and go from 0mph to 60mph, I would expect the measure of acceleration to increase in value from 0 to 60, but once I reach 60, I expect the value to return to 0 since I am "no longer accelerating" but am moving at a constant speed. Now if the accelerometer measure motion, I would expect it to register 0 to 60 and continue to provide a change in value as I move forward at 60mph. Sorry, I looked at a few books, programmed some code (values seemed to small to give a recognizable result over short distances or speeds), and a lot of web searches, and I am trying to get an answer to this question. Thanx!

  • Does a servlet-based stack have significant overheads?

    - by John
I don't know if it's simply because page-loads take a little time, or the way servlets have an abstraction framework above the 'bare metal' of HTTP, or just because of the "Enterprise" in Jave-EE, but in my head I have the notion that a servlet-based app is inherently adding overhead compared to a Java app which simply deals with sockets directly. Forget web-pages, imagine instead a Java server app where you send it a question over an HTTP request and it looks up an answer from memory and returns the answer in the response. You can easily write a Java socket-based app which does this, you can also do a servlet approach and get away from the "bare metal" of sockets. Is there any measurable performance impact to be expected implementing the same approach using Servlets rather than a custom socket-based HTTP listening app? And yes, I am hazy on the exact data sent in HTTP requests and I know it's a vague question. It's really about whether servlet implementations have lots of layers of indirection or anything else that would add up to a significant overhead per call, where by significant I mean maybe an additional 0.1s or more.

  • jboss web services to tranfer files

    - by mengmenger
I dont have any experience for web services. please give me some suggestion about the task below. the task is: users will send a txt file (size should less than 20K ) from a .NET application, I need to write a web services which runs by jboss 5.x to read this file and edit this file and send the file back to .NET UI to display the edited version. question is that if the txt file is just test string or binary string, are there any restriction of the string length? if it's binary string, can I need to use BinaryReader class to read it? or not need special reader to read it? (this could be a dumn question :P) what if the .NET application can save the file on either the .NET application server or some shared server location, send a download URL to web serivces, can web services download it and read it? JBoss will be run on Linux sever. After edit the file, how do I send it back? Thanks for your help!
