  • Cannot boot into Ubuntu after installing Ubuntu 12.04 (with Windows 7 on another partition)

    I just installed Ubuntu on my desktop which had Windows 7 installed on it. When I restart the machine after completing the installation, It directly loads windows, I don't see the grub menu. I tried using boot-repair using the LiveCD (both recommended fixes AND fixing the MBR), it did not help. What am I missing? I have done this at least 5 other times, on different machines, and have never faced this issue before.

When I turn it on, it asks me, since I also have Windows 7 on my laptop, if I want to start with windows 7 or Ubuntu. When I choose Ubuntu, it brings me to the GRUB screen.     I was looking into google.com's Net activity in firebug just because I was curious and noticed a request was returning "204 No Content." It turns out that a 204 No Content "is primarily intended to allow input for actions to take place without causing a change to the user agent's active document view, although any new or updated metainformation SHOULD be applied to the document currently in the user agent's active view." Whatever. I've looked into the JS source code and saw that "generate_204" is requested like this: (new Image).src="http://clients1.google.com/generate_204" No variable declaration/assignment at all. My first idea is that it was being used to track if Javascript is enabled. But the "(new Image).src='...'" call is called from a dynamically loaded external JS file anyway, so that would be pointless. Anyone have any ideas as to what the point could be? UPDATE "/generate_204" appears to be available on many google services/servers (e.g., maps.google.com/generate_204, maps.gstatic.com/generate_204, etc...). You can take advantage of this by pre-fetching the generate_204 pages for each google-owned service your web app may use.   • jQuery live draggable / live droppable?

    Hi all, Basically there are two tables: Companies and visitors. Currently it's possible to drag visitors to companies. Works great. As soon as the drop function occurs, there are two $.post's. The first one saves the drag to the database. The second one updates the visitors, because the information constantly changes. The problem, however is that as soon as the second $.post finishes, Firebug keeps popping the following error: d(this).data("draggable") is null Which occurs in the jQuery UI file. On line 56. about 400 times or so. So basically I'm looking for a way to do live() with draggable and droppable. The .draggables are in #visitors (an ul). The droppables are in #companies (a table).     I'm running into an issue with adding JOIN's to a subquery using DetachedCriteria.   • Blend "Window is not supported in a WPF Project"

    I am having a frustrating time with Blend reporting "Window is not supported in a Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) project." due to unbuildable configurations but can't quite work out how to mangle my way out of it. I've worked out it is probably due to my trying to have a single solution with x86 and x64 configurations. There is no way to tell Blend 2 which is the active Solution Configuration and active Solution Platform. I think it's a bit of a weakness in the configuration system, or maybe the way I've set things up, but I have Debug64 and Debug solution configurations one of each is used with the platform x86 and x64. I also think it's a simple sorting problem - x64 comes before x86 and Debug comes before Debug64 so Blend ends up with an unbuildable config of Debug with x64. When I choose the combination of Debug and x64 in VS, its XAML editor can't load either. The solution is a moderately complex one - there's a pure Win32 DLL, C++/CLI Model project and two other WPF assemblies used by the main WPF project. UPDATE I have ripped all the x64 config out of my solution and rebuilt everything with no effect. I then uninstalled Blend 2 and installed Blend 3 - it doesn't like things either. The Visual Studio XAML editor is still very happy as is the program building and running. (echoes of strangled scream of frustration from oz)

  • SSRS 2008: is it possible to make a report parameter NOT query-based for some linked report?

    I suspect the answer is no, but here goes.. I'm using the WebForms Report Viewer on a public-facing website to allow users to report on themselves or their users (if the user is an admin user). A report has a parameter called Users where an admin can pick a user from the list and generate a report from it. Mundane users can also view this report, but I programmatically create a linked report for each user and set the UserID value to their ID so they can only view themselves. This works well except that the UserID parameter is query-based, and not every user is visible in the list using default settings (the user list is based off date range parameters can provide, and only users we consider 'active' during the date range are visible). This is blowing up for mundane users that are not active for the default date range (which is the previous month). I suspect the flow of execution is something like this: Report loads with default parameters The linked report rules are now applied and the value of the UserID is overridden with the ID in the linked report UserID field is now hidden to prevent the user from changing it SSRS can't find the UserID default value in the query results (that I didn't even want it to run) so it displays an error The 'UserID' parameter is missing a value Through some testing I've found a perfect correlation between users not inside the default date range and users who can't view the report. Can anyone suggest a way to make the report usable for those users that aren't in the default list? The reports are created programmatically so I do have a fair bit of control over the situation. I would love to simply be able to mark a parameter in a linked report as no longer being query-based, but those properties are all read-only. I really, really don't want to have to create duplicate reports to accommodate these users but I'm at a bit of a loss right now. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

  • How to disable authentication schemes for WCF Data Services

    When I deployed my WCF Data Services to production hosting I started to get the following error (or similar depending on which auth schemes are active): IIS specified authentication schemes 'Basic, Anonymous', but the binding only supports specification of exactly one authentication scheme. Valid authentication schemes are Digest, Negotiate, NTLM, Basic, or Anonymous. Change the IIS settings so that only a single authentication scheme is used. Apparently WCF Data Services (WCF in general?) cannot handle having more than once authentication scheme active. OK so I am aware that I can disable all-but-one authentication scheme on the web application via IIS control panel .... via a support request!! Is there a way to specify a single authentication scheme on a per-service level in the web.config? I thought this might be as straight forward as making a change to <system.serviceModel> but... it turns out that WCF Data Services do not configure themselves in the web config. If you look at the DataService<> class it does not implement a [ServiceContract] hence you cannot refer to it in the <service><endpoint>...which I presume would be needed for changing its configuration via XML. P.S. Our host is using II6, but both solutions for IIS6 & IIS7 appreciated.

    I've had two previous questions about active record store that all came down to the same thing. Here's what I want: I want to access the session at any time and see who is online right now and access their session variable from anywhere. I need this because: Users are separated into groups. If one person logs in he receives an api token that I receive from some third party site. If a person from the same group logs in he needs to have that same api token in his session. I cannot regenerate new api tokens on a per call basis. I think active record store is a perfect solution for me, however, I have a problem implementing it!!! InvalidAuthenticityToken keeps getting thrown because I used to use the default cookie store. If you're familiar with AutoHotkey or AutoIT on Windows, then you know exactly the kind of features I need, with the level of complexity. Here's an explanation for those who don't speak AHK: ----Start of Explanation of Code ---- Asks user to input some text and stores it in varInput Runs notepad.exe Waits till window exists and is active Sends the contents of varInput as a series of keystrokes Sends keystrokes to go to File - Exit Waits till the "Save" window is active Sends some more keystrokes Shows a Message Box with some text and the contents of a variable Registers a hotkey, Win+N, which when pressed executes notepad.exe ----End of Explanation---- So as you can understand, the features are quite obvious: Ability to easily simulate keyboard and mouse functions, read input, process and display output, execute programs, manipulate windows, register hotkeys, etc.. all being done without requiring any #includes, unnecessary brackets, class declarations etc. In short: Simple. Now I've played around a bit with Perl and Python, but its definitely no AHK. They're great for more advanced stuff, but surely, there has to be some tool out there for easy GUI automation? PS: I've already tried running AHK with Wine but sending keystrokes and hotkeys don't work.

    Building a search with some custom objects and three scopes: All, Active, and Former. I have been playing around with if statements, adding AND scope == 'Active', etc. to the end of the statement and using NSCompoundPredicates to no avail. Whenever I activate a scope, I'm not getting any matches for it. Just a note that I've seen approaches like this one that take scope into account, however they only search inside one property.

  • CSS sliding door background image problem.

    I noticed I am not the first to ask about CSS sliding doors. However this seems (at least to me) to be a rather odd problem which I have not seen an answer for. Why would one be darker? I tried using png jpg, gif, with and without transparency. I posted the code here, along with another attempt using only one jpg instead of two, but still the same results.     I am using sIfr (3.436) for my H1 and H2 tags. In IE8 the text flickers and jumps around alot.
