  • Are icon fonts bad for SEO?

    Instead of using <img> tags for your icons, you can use icon fonts on <span> tags (which offer some advantages such as not having to create a sprite, being able to scale icons up/down without degrading quality...). However, by using an icon font you give up the <img> alt attribute (that attribute can help you with SEO). There is a way to add text to the <span> and hide it, but I wonder whether this is recognized / penalized by Google (as it seems to go against the quality guidelines). Are icon fonts bad for SEO (i.e. by using icon fonts you give up the alt attribute) ? Would inserting text in font icon tag and hiding it with CSS (text-indent: -9999px) be recognized / penalized by Google ?

  • wordpress image showing up multiple times

    I am writing a wordpress theme, and have run into a fairly basic problem. By default, when you inset an image into the post, it displays that image at the size you specify, on both the homepage and the single post. I would like to have different sized images, displaying a thumbnail on the homepage, and a full sized image when you click through to the post. I am using wordpress 2.9's new thumbnail feature, which has created great thumbnails for the homepage. But now, I am stuck with a nice thumbnail next to a large photo (on the index/home page). On the single page, it is displaying correctly with just the large picture. Basically, I need to know how to tell wordpress to only display the large post image on the single page, not on the index. Also: I have used the timthumb script, but I think the answer is far more basic then needing plugins or scripts Thanks!

    So as I've described in a previous post about span tags within head tags, I'm practicing application of microdata via http://schema.org. Anyone who's browsed the documentation there knows that there's a lot of need for improvement for more clear understandings on use for each property. My question on this post is more about the "significantLinks" property and how it effects SEO for on page, in content anchored text. Does anyone have any more information regarding whether its good to use for link optimization? I understand what schema.org means that it's to be used on "non-navigational links" and those links should be relevant to the current page's meaning. But will using this property hurt SEO or make SEO better for each page? Thanks in advance, as by answering this with accurate information you are helping not just me, but many people who are trying to make their customers more successful through helping their rank for relevant keywords to their business, bringing them more search engine traffic.

Do both ObjectSet and EntityCollection implement IQueryable? I am hoping they do so that I know the queries are getting executed at the data source and not in memory. EDIT: So apparently EntityCollection does not while ObjectSet does. Does that mean I would be better off using this code? I'm using Http Post to send them but when I run the application I get the error- request time failed java.net.SocketException: Address family not supported by protocol. I get this while debugging with both the emulator as well as a device connected by wifi.     I am working on a web applicaton. And what we also create is something that could be described as inline editing. Just to portray thing I am trying to solve I use example of Facebook post. You have post like. Steve Jobs added 5 new photos Steve Jobs is link that redirects to his profile so in HTML, that would be: <div class="post-block"> <p><a href="stevejobs/" title="#">Steve Jobs</a> added 5 new photos.<p> </div> But what I want is the whole post "block" to be clickable although I want only that name to appear to be link. Normally in HTML logic would say to to this: <a href="stevejobs/" title="#"><div class="post-block"> <p><a href="stevejobs/" title="#">Steve Jobs</a> added 5 new photos.<p> </div></a> But this isn't semantically correct. Quick look to HTML 4.01 or any other standard says something like this: Links and anchors defined by the A element must not be nested; an A element must not contain any other A elements. How to create it semantically correct other than using javascript and defining div:hover state for the whole "div anchor"?

  • Code maintenance: To add comments in code or to just leave it to the version control?

    We have been asked to add comments with start tags, end tags, description, solution etc for each change that we make to the code as part of fixing a bug / implementing a CR. My concern is, does this provide any added value? As it is, we have all the details in the Version control history, which will help us to track each and every change? But my leads are insisting on having the comments as a "good" programming practice. One of their argument is when a CR has to be de-scoped/changed, it would be cumbersome if comments are not there. Considering that the changes would be largely in between code, would it really help to add comments for each and every change we make? Shouldn't we leave it to the version control?

  • Redisigning an old site, structure change etc

    I have an old site built in 2006, it has around 200 pages and 500 pictures. Every single page is of course indexed as well as images. It is very well ranked for targeted keywords and I receive good amount of SEO traffic (I guess that's due the various campaigns, branding, ppc, etc..) Problem: Site has outdated design, pages and images have not so proper names, there are no heading and alt tags, it was built in tables, inline CSS etc.. Goal: Complete redisign site, use divs, change file names, add proper meta data, alt tags etc.. Question: How this can affect current SEO positions? I will redirect (301) every single page to the new one, build site map, but what to do with images? Do I need to redirect them also? Any other suggestion?

  • How can I neatly embed Flash in a page in a way that is cross-browser compatible?

    When I receive Flash objects from my designer, it comes with an example HTML page which includes both <object> tags and <embed> tags as well as a whole heap of JavaScript. If I copy and paste this code in to my webpage, it works, but the code looks a mess (and there is so much of it!). If I remove the extra code and try either just <embed> or <object> on their own, it works in some browsers, but not others. Is there a neat, minimal method that works in all the major browsers?

    If this title is ambiguous, feel free to change it, I don't know how to put this in a one-liner. Example: Let's assume you have a html template which contains some custom tags, like <text_field />. We now create a page based on a template containing more of those custom tags. When a user wants to edit the page, he sees a text field. he can input things and save it. This looks fairly easy to set up. You either have something like a template_positions table which stores the content of those fields. Case: I now have a bit of a blockade keeping things as simple as possible. Assume you have the same tag given in your example, and additionally, <layout> and <repeat> tags. Here's an example how they should be used: <repeat> <layout name="image-left"> <image /> <text_field /> </layout> <layout name="image-right"> <text_field /> <image /> </layout> </repeat> We now have a block which can be repeated, obviously. This means: when creting/editing a page containing such a template block, I can choose between a layout image-left and image-right which then gets inserted as content element (where content for <image /> and <text_field /> gets stored). And because this is inside a <repeat>, content elements from the given layouts can be inserted multiple times. How do you store this? Simply said, this could be stored with the same setup I've wrote in the example above, I just need to add a parent_id or something similiar to maintain a hierarchy. but I think I am missing something. At least the relation between an inserted content element and the origin/insertion point is missing. And what happens when I update the template file? Do I have to give every custom tag that acts as editable part of a template an identifier that matches an identifier in the template to substitue them correctly? Or can you think of a clean solution that might be better?

    I'm just about to start a new business which creates niche affiliate sites. I'm curious about the impacts to me from Google of all the urls being hosted with the same analytic tags, webmaster tool tags and server ip ranges. To benefit the most from google's serps should i have each domain within seperate analytic accounts and webmaster tools or is it ok for me to have all of my domains within one account. My issue is duplicate content and the fact that i am building a publisher network and i'm not sure how much google likes them. I'm notoriously bad at searching and as such havent found what i'm looking for yet. Any help would be very much appreciated.

  • facebook graph api does not return all feed items on facebook page

    at the time of this question, if you go here: http://www.facebook.com/realplayer you'll see six posts down, I have posted a photo with a message of "#highfive Cincinnati, OH" but if you to either of these: http://graph.facebook.com/realplayer/feed http://graph.facebook.com/realplayer/tagged the JSON that is returned seemingly includes everything on the wall, except for MY post. there is another photo post from someone else down below mine, and it is showing up (and both my photo and his photo are in the "Fan photos" section) obviously, since I can see everything with these links already, it appears that access_token is not a part of the equation... BUT, some more info: if I use an access_token from a session that isn't me, I can't see the post in the JSON if I use an access_token from MY logged in session, then I DO see the post in the JSON so I'm very confused. if everyone in the world can see those posts on the wall without even authenticating, then I expect all of them to come back in the graph api as well. anyone have thoughts on this? I am aware of the "manage_page" permission... which I can use to get a list of accounts and special offline access tokens for those pages... and that's something I can explore... but it seems like alot of work when my post seemingly SHOULD be there in the graph

    Hi guys, I am trying to use jQuery (latest version) & ajax to poll a mysql db every x seconds, post.php does a simple search query on the table and limits to 1 row. (eg SELECT id FROM TABLE LIMIT 1) I've got some other jQuery UI (using v1.8) code that displays some modal/dialog boxes on the screen, simply put if post.php returns something from the db I need to initialise the dialog to pop up onto the screen. I've done all the popup stuff I am just having issues joining all these bits together - i've added some pseudo code of how i expect this to work.   • WordPress page is listed in "Posts" but appears on site as a "Page", What gives?

    I've seen this on a few sites now and its puzzling me. The page will be listed under the "Edit Posts" listing, however, when I click on "View Page" to see the live post, its being served out as a "Page". I can tell this by viewing the source and the body tag is... <body class="page page-id-37 logged-in"> If its were actually a post, the body tag should be <body class="single postid-63 logged-in"> I've seen a "post to page" and a "page to post" plugin that will convert between pages and posts, however, this site has NO plugins other than the wordpress defaults (akismet and hello dolly). I'm stumped.

  • Get controller method caller (3rd party webservice)

    Is it possible to retrieve the URL of a 3rd party webservice calling my controller method? Things like Request.Current.Url refer to my own URL (/someController/someAction/). The 3rd party webservice is sending HTTP POST data to my /someController/someAction and I wish to send back a HTTP POST message to the caller of the method, the 3rd party webservice, without using return Content["some response"] which will force me to exit the method. Since the answer is plain text I would like to send it using HTTP Post. What I actually try to do is respond to the calling webservice without exiting my method (return Content() will exit) so I can call other methods to process the data send to me by the webservice. I want to first tell the webservice I received their stuff and than process, in this way when a processing error occurs the webservice at least will not resend old data. Is there another way to do this than building your own HTTP post?

  • Heroku: Postgres type operator error after migrating DB from MySQL

    This is a follow-up to a question I'd asked earlier which phrased this as more of a programming problem than a database problem. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2935985/postgres-error-with-sinatra-haml-datamapper-on-heroku I believe the problem has been isolated to the storage of the ID column in Heroku's Postgres database after running db:push. In short, my app runs properly on my original MySQL database, but throws Postgres errors on Heroku when executing any query on the ID column, which seems to have been stored in Postgres as TEXT even though it is stored as INT in MySQL. My question is why the ID column is being created as INT in Postgres on the data transfer to Heroku, and whether there's any way for me to prevent this. (i.e. something equivalent to what="1-f"). Is there a way to do it? Other suggestions in R other than using Hmisc are also very much welcomed.
