• Business guy building a software company [closed]

  I am a business guy who is about to embark on a very risky journey to start this own software company. I have done sales for several software companies and in the last 8 years, I have managed to generate over $15 million in pure SAAS revenues for my employers. I think now its time to do it for myself and see where I can take the business. I have an idea in mind which I would like to develop and have been speaking with several companies who I may hire to convert that idea into a SAAS based offering. I am scared of the following: Being ripped off as I have no technical knowledge Over-charged Building something and realizing the foundation was weak, not scalable etc. Can anyone help me identify what I need to do before I sign a software development company to start my project. What do I need to know? What is the typical cost? What is a realistic time frame? Which coding language is better? What steps can I take to prevent myself from being ripped-off?

Sure, we're well beyond the "no floor" perception of 18 months ago--which is certainly comforting, but ask any senior executive and they'll tell you of the constant rigor necessary to continually adapt to an ever-changing macro environment. Monday, April 19 9:15 a.m. - Keynote: Transforming Customer Value, Delivering Highest Customer Service Location: Keynote Hall I never miss Charles Phillips when he speaks--it's one of the best opportunities to get an update on Oracle product developments and strategy. And there's certainly occasion for an update: this will be Phillips' first big presentation since the Oracle + Sun Strategy Update in late January. Phillips is appearing with Oracle Executive Vice President of Development Thomas Kurian which means there should be some excellent information about how customers are using Oracle's complete software and hardware stack to address enterprise IT challenges. A great way to start Wednesday.1:00 p.m. - Google Wave: Will it replace e-mail as we know it today? Location: SURF EBy many assessments (my own included), Google Wave is a bit of an open collaboration failure. It may seem like an odd reason for me to be excited about this session, but I'm looking forward to the chance to revisit the technology. • Which hosted ecommerce solutions allow customization?

  Following my previous question, I'm now evaluating the possibility of using a hosted platform for the ecommerce project I have to implement. Before I start "playing" with each one of them, I'd like ask if anybody knows which ones allow a good degree of customization. At the moment I'm looking at BigCommerce, but it seems that customization is limited to templates, while I need additional features which require PHP Coding. Also, I'd need to be able to import additional product data into the system, and I'd need to do this via code; I had a look at some integrations, but they gave me the impression that they all run on the rendered page via JavaScript. For example, if I want to show Facebook Reviews on a product, I'll have to add some JS that will fetch it and show it on the page. This is not optimal, as I must cater for people with JS disabled, therefore I'd need to run my own PHP code. Thanks again for all the opinions.

• Is osTicket secure/private enough

  I was going to use osTicket as my 'help desk' for my website, however I just got a little bit concerned when I realised that the clients' login details to see their support tickets are only their email address and a ticket ID. I am probably going over the top with security though, which is why I wanted to get some second opinions on how secure osTicket actually is and whether I should use it with my website. I run a software company, so chances are licence keys may be included in support tickets which are obviously sensitive information and valuable - so I want to ensure that the likelihood of a support ticket being hacked is very low. If there is any plugins/additions to make osTicket more 'secure', I would appreciate it if you could point me to them. Otherwise if there are any more free, more suited, help desk softwares out there please let me know. Thanks in advance

  Found this one interesting. So, picked it from one of the books and posting here.JSP 2.1 and JSF 1.2 - both of them use a unified Expression language. One major and the most obvious difference is between $ and #. JSP 2.1 uses $ and JSF 1.2 uses # in an EL. $ - immediate evaluation# - deferred evaluation$ - $ syntax executes expressions eagerly/immediately, which means that the result is returned immediately when the page renders.# - # syntax defers the expression evaluation to a point defined by the implementing technology. In general, JSF uses deferred EL evaluation because of its multiple lifecycle phases in which events are handled.   Hi everyone, I am currently using ActiveCollab but it lacks the typical CRM features. I can't even keep notes about a customer saved in one place. What I am looking for is a simple but efficient CRM application that allows me to store all the (potential) customers along with their phone calls noted down, contracts, agreements. On the billing end, I should be able to keep track of invoices and payments, along with a bit of sales reports. A great extra would be a ticket support feature but not really necessary I looked at VTiger and SugarCRM at first. Though, they look too complex on the sales/campaigns end but completely lack the billing side. Do you have some good apps/services to suggest? :) Any programming language or OS would do. • Should I be looking for an alternative to Zen Cart as my business grows?

  I created a business website for a family business which is growing. It's my family, and I'm a software developer, but I don't want to rebuild the wheels or be a shopping cart programmer. For this business, I need the web store to "just work", but... it gets complicated... There are two parts of this business website. One of them is driven by Wordpress and I use the awesome Thesis theme. This is modern, flexible, and saves me a lot of time from doing custom coding and styling. I couldn't be more pleased with this arrangement. The other part of the site is a Zen Cart store. It's administration and it's flexibility is frustrating and archaic Web 1.0. For the past few years, I keep hearing that the developers are working on a 2.0 version of Zen Cart, but they haven't communicated anything significant in the past few years other than to say, "When it's ready, we'll let you know." What I'm looking for in a cart, I would need to install 6-10 additional mods, and would need to do a lot of custom coding. I'm now willing to pay for a top-notch e-commerce solution for a small business that we can grow up into a larger business over time. Requirements: Extremely flexible shipping that let's us set up rules per product/category, tables of rates, calculated rates, max package weighs, etc. (flexibility like that available with CEON Advance Shipping Module for Zen Cart Coupons and gift certificates Manual order entry for phone orders Multi-channel support (We also sell on Amazon, eBay, use Google Base and we want to maintain one set of inventory and have it kept current) Decent SEO features Reviews and star-ratings on products Easy social networking features for sharing, following, liking, etc) Easy integration with AdWords and analytics tracking Modern and very usable product and store administration (Like I was saying, I'm spoiled by Wordpress and Thesis) At the end of the day, I don't care if it's a hosted solution or if I have to host it myself. I just want something that is going to stay up-to-date, regularly be maintained and improved, and if I have to update it, things like the one-click update present in Wordpress is something it has to have. Professional Webmasters, if you had to run a store / website, but you had to spend your time focusing on your sales and marketing efforts rather than diffing php files and copying and tweaking them to change even the slightest details of your site, what would you choose?

• How to impove Ubuntu performance on netbook

  Most recent Ubuntu 12.04 seems to be quite nice and Unity (3D/2D) works fine for me, however not on my old Acer Aspire One any more. There was a times, when I switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu and was happy about system looks, effects and speed... now I attend to think that XP was really great comparing with 12.04. I have found similar questions here but no reasonable answer: how to lower CPU usage for Unity (3D/2D) and memory consumption for Ubuntu 12.04. With new interface I could not find how to disable background services... It's Linux, it's should be the way to optimize without buying new PC... Please share your recipe!
