• Speeding up Connection Between Computer and Wireless/Bridged Router

  Hey everyone, I looked through other questions, but didn't find useful responses. Our main computer has a dl speed of 6 Mbps, but some of our other computers are getting only 40-200 Kb! The router is wireless, but all computers are connected using a Netgear Wall-Plugged Bridge XE102, which transmits information via the building's powerline. It can't be the hardware itself, however, because some computers still manage decent speeds. The computers afflicted are running on Microsoft XP Service Packs 2 and 3, but so are computers that are totally functional. These speeds severely impede on productivity and are excruciatingly frustrating when trying to cram in time in the early hours. Could it be an issue with the computer? Location? Router? • SQL Server Express 2005 SP3 Update Keeps Coming Back (KB995706)

  Hi Guys, I have installed the above update through Windows Update. The update went through, reported a successful installation, and then straight after that it came back as an available update. I have done it a few times and my update log now contains multiple successful installations of KB995706. I have tried to uncheck it in the list of updates but it keeps coming back as well. The machine is a Server 2008 RC2 Standard. It's got SQL Server 2005 Express as well as SQL Server 2008 Standard. In the Event Log: Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) followed by Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. • In MVC , DAO should be called from Controller or Model

  I have seen various arguments against the DAO being called from the Controller class directly and also the DAO from the Model class.Infact I personally feel that if we are following the MVC pattern , the controller should not coupled with the DAO , but the Model class should invoke the DAO from within and controller should invoke the model class.Why because , we can decouple the model class apart from a webapplication and expose the functionalities for various ways like for a REST service to use our model class. If we write the DAO invocation in the controller , it would not be possible for a REST service to reuse the functionality right ? I have summarized both the approaches below. • Computers "applying computer settings" for a long time on start-up...why?

  Hello. Might be a bit of a slong shot but I'm stumped, along with the ICT Manager for the school I'm working it. In one of the IT rooms when you switch a computer on it will boot through BIOS fine, but when it gets to "applying computer settings" it can hang for a long time (~15 minutes). If you unplug the computer from the network it starts up fine, gets to the login screen, then you can plug the network cable in and it will work fine. I don't think it's anything to do with the fact we've been coming close to running out of IP addresses or a problem with our DHCP. Microsoft KB says apply the latest service pack, which we've done, and check a service. Servers and domian controllers are S2003, Computers and Desktops are XP. Does anybody have any thoughts on what to try?

• Saving each layer of a Photoshop image to separate files

  I have a PSD file with all icons in separate layers as vectors. I would like to save them in different sizes to use in iPhone, iPhone4 and iPad. I tried Files Scripts Export Layers to Files That took about 15 minutes to save each layer while the computer was overheating from the work. Tried with two different computers, one with CS4 and the other with CS5. Same result. And that doesn't allow me to set sizes. Seem like most icon packs, like pictos, glyphish and iconsweets are distributed in this way, in one PSD file. Is some easy way to get them out of the PSD and into PNG files?

• Would Apple be able to tell if I'm running Mac OS inside a VM?

  Just as the question/title says. I understand that running Mac OS inside of a VM is against the EULA for the consumer version (but not the server, which is much more expensive!) If I were to purchase a legal copy of Mac OS, and install it to a VM, then register as an Apple Developer, would they shut me out? Is there a way they can tell the difference between emulated hardware and Apple computers? I'm slightly unfamiliar with how all of Apple's software works. Windows goes through this "genuine" test whenever installing service packs, but I don't know if Mac goes through the same trouble. Many thanks, -Tom

• What are some good seminar topics that can be used to improve designer&developer communication?

  Hello guys the thing I'll tell is what happens in the company I work for but I know it's more like a common issue in software companies. I'm development team leader in a internet service company that provides service that's very similar to dropbox. In our company we have mainly two divisions: the tech division and the designers division, both have their own reporting hierarchy. Designers focus on designing UI and prioritizing features, while developers focus on implement designers' ideas (more like being driven as our big boss has said). Then here comes our issue: the DEV team and DES team communicate very bad. DEV complain DES for these reasons: Too frequent changing of requirements Too complicated interaction (our DEV team has actually learned many HCI principles) Documents for design are incomplete, usually you just get 'design principles' and it's up to DEV to complete design details. When you find design defects, you ask DES team to resolve them, then DES team quickly change the principles and you gonna spend another several weeks because the change is so fundamental. While DES complain DEV for these reasons: Code architecture is not good enough to adapt to changing requirements (Obviously DES knows something about software development) Product design is about principles, not details. DEV fails to realize this. Communication should be quick and should be mainly oral. Trying to make most feature discussion in document for reference is too overloaded and doesn't make sense. As you can see, DEV and DES have different ideas on product design, and encourages very different practice. We have this difference because of the way we work. So our solution is that we should plan some seminars to make each part more aware of the way the other part work. Then my question is, what are some good topics for such seminars? Guessing some people may not think seminars can solve this problem, please also suggest your solution.

• Limiting calls to WCF services from BizTalk

  ** WORK IN PROGRESS ** This is just a placeholder for the full article that is in progress. The problem My BTS solution was receiving thousands of messages at once. After processing by BTS I needed to send them on via one of several WCF services depending on the message content. The problem is that due to the asynchronous nature of BizTalk the WCF services were getting hammered and could not cope with the load. Note: It is possible to limit the SOAP calls in the BtsNtSvc.exe.Config file but that does not have the desired results for Net-TCP WCF services. The solution So I created a new MessageType for the messages in question and posted them to the BTS messaeg box. This schema included the URL they were being sent to as a promoted property. I then subscribed to the message type from a new orchestraton (that does just the WCF send) using the URL as a correlation ID. This created a singleton orchestraton that was instantiated when the first message hit the message box. It then waits for further messages with the same correlation ID and type and processs them one at a time using a loop shape with a timer (A pretty standard pattern for processing related messages) Image to go here This limits the number of calls to the individual WCF services to 1. Which is a good start but the service can handle more than that and I didn't want to create a bottleneck. So I then constructed the Correlation ID using the URL concatinated with a random number between 1 and 10. This makes 10 possible correlation IDs per URL and so 10 instances of the singleton Orchestration per WCF service. Just what I needed and the upper random number is a configuration value in SSO so I can change the maximum connections without touching the code.

• MySql calculate number of connections needed

  I am trying to figure my needs regarding web service hosting. After trying Azure I have realized that the default MySql they provide (through a third party) limits the account to 4 connections. You can then upgrade the account to 15, 30 or 40 connections (which is quite expensive). Their 15 connections plan is descirbed as: "Excellent choice for light test and staging apps that need a reliable MySQL database". I have 2 questions: if my application is a web service which needs to preform ~120k Queries a day (Normal/BELL distribution) and each query is ~150ms(duration)/~400ms(fetch), how many connection do I need? If instead of using cloud computing, I will choose a VPS, how many connections will I be able to handle on a 1GB 2 cores VPS? Thank you!

• Resilient Linux Mail Server Setup

  How would people design a resilient mail server setup with Linux? On an application level what the system needs to provide is both an incoming and outgoing mail service (i.e. SMTP & IMAP), along with filtering and archive storage (the archive part isn't critical yet, so we'll look at this later probably). What is required on top of this is a resilient system, i.e. one which will handle individual server failures without interrupting service. As such I would term this a High Availability mail system. This is in contrast to a High Performance mail setup, as in our case the volume of mail being handled isn't the important factor, it's simply that it stays online. Having not approached this problem before, the first thing I thought of was a clustered file system (gfs/gluster/etc), combined with heartbeat to failover a floating IP to another box in the case of a server failure. Combined with postfix & dovecot does this sound feasible to people?

It is generated on the computer where access was attempted. The Subject fields indicate the account on the local system which requested the logon. I checked the services and they are all logging in as local system or network service. Nothing for administrator. Anyone have any idea how I tell where these are coming from?   I have MySQL installed on Ubuntu 11.10. I has been working fine for months but yesterday I started getting the following message ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) and cannot get rid of it. I tried /etc/init.d/mysqld start and got bash: /etc/init.d/mysqld: No such file or directory The /etc/init.d/ directory contains mysql but not mysqld. I tried sudo service mysql restart It just hung for about half an hour and then I ctrl-C-ed it. I then tried sudo service mysql start I got mysql start/running But when I tried mysql I got ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) I tried ps aux|grep mysql and got peter 17754 0.0 0.0 4196 768 pts/1 S+ 09:38 0:00 grep --color=auto mysql I ideas about fixing this problem would be most appreciated.

• Is Windows Media Player able to play DTS audio?

  I'm trying to play DTS audio with Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7. For a MPEG-TS file with video and DTS audio, only video is played. A file containing only a DTS audio stream is rejected. But: WMP is able to play the DTS audio stream of a DVD. So, Is Windows Media Player able to play DTS audio, or not? And if: How do I make him play my DTS files? I did not find any good resources of the supported codecs. Just things like "WMP can play .mpg files, ..." VLC is able to play all of the above files. I do not want to install third party codec packs, thats not the question!

• Lync Server 2010 with Hosted VoIP PBX

  We just deployed Lync Server 2010 in our organization and it is working great so far. The next step for us is to enable enterprise voice so that we can replace our telephones with service that is handled 100% by Lync. This is where I am at a loss. I have a fully deployed Standard Edition Lync server and a hosted VoIP PBX provider with VoIP handsets. I would like to get rid of the handsets and have my company's phone service be handled by Lync client (e.g. someone calls my work number, and Lync rings instead of my old handset that is set up with the PBX) I am new to deploying these types of features. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  Hi, Do you know any software or compilations that you recommend to handle drivers and codecs for newly formated computer? I am having problem gathering drivers and codecs when I format my computer or other's computer because we frequently misplace it's original drivers. I need an offline solution that doesn't need internet. Same for as the codec, when formating computer we frequently lost our codecs, are there codec packs you know that you would like to recommend? P.s. I had tried driver bot but it's only good when your online, I'm looking for a complete package that has all the driver to most common hardware (eg. Monitor, Sound, etc). Thanks!

• What would be the best way to correlate logs and events on several hosts?

  I'm trying to build a log correlation system on multiple hosts. SEC seems interesting but I don't know if it will cover my needs. How could I correlate system events, logs, network events, etc. on multiple hosts at the same time, in real time? Examples: If 5 failed logins happened on host A the last minute and if firewall B has denied lots of access on differents ports on A, then we assume there is a potential attack in progress on A. If the Apache service on host A didn't receive any request for the last N minutes and Apache service on host B did, then the load balancing could be faulty.

  I've just the following commands on Ubuntu 10.04 in order to enable cron logs. But I still don't see the file /var/logs/cron. 1. Edit /etc/syslog.conf and uncomment the line starting with cron.* 2. sudo /etc/init.d/sysklogd restart 3. sudo /etc/init.d/cron restart (I've also tried sudo service cron restart). What am i missing to do ? Also, I would like to know how can I run cron manually and not just start the service. thanks

PORT STATE SERVICE 3306/tcp closed mysql Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1.05 seconds # in my Security Group I allowed Inbound connectivity via port TCP, portrange 3306 and Source 0.0.0.0/0, so theoratically it should work, but in reality it doesn't( I'm running red hat enterprise linux 7 on both VMs. mariadb.service running fine on another VM and I am able to connect to it locally. DB's: # netstat -anp | grep 3306 tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:3306 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 2324/mysqld # iptables -L Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination # Any ideas what else I missed?

• Puppet: Could not find init script for 'squid'

  I'm using Puppet to install ufdbGuard which requires Squid 2.7 (which is correctly installed and working properly). Any ideas?

• Restore SBS 2003 CompanyWeb calendar from flat files?

  Ok so I have a job of recovering a calendar that was used for an event schedule. The situation is that there was never a backup done except for using Carbonite on the C drive. I have re-installed the server with the same server name and domain. I tried stopping the mssqlsharepoint service and over-righting the two DB files (STS_1.mdf and STS_1_log.LDF) and each one individually each time stopping and restarting the service. Now I knew before I started that this had a slim chance of working but I had to try because everything else i could find involved backing up before restoring and this just wasn't done. Please someone help it is driving me mad I tell you MADDDDDD. ps i am not the genius that set this up just the fool tasked to clean up the mess. :-)

• Script to restart BlackBerry services

  Can somebody give me a script advice/example of how to restart services? I have to restart 17 services, but the first 4 services have to be in the right order and after the restart command is given to one of the services, the next one should be started when the previous one is finished. I know I can restart a service by net command, and I can build a delay by for example a ping command that repeats for an x amount of times, but I never know in advance how long it is going to take for a service to restart.
