    We are using Tivoli Storage Manager for taking backups of the database but sometimes our consultants need to take separate backup copies of the database using Management Studio. If they forget to mark the "copy-only" flag in Management Studio they will mess up the Tivoli's backups (we are running our databases in FULL-recovery mode). Is there a way to set the default value of the Copy-Only flag to true in the Management Studio's "Back Up Database"-window?

  • Is bigger capacity ram faster then smaller capacity ram for same clock and CL?

    I know that bigger capacity hard-drives with the same RPM are faster then smaller capacity hard-drives. I was wondering if the same is true for ram. Given two ram clocked at 1600mhz and with identical CLs: 9-9-9-24. Is a 2x8 going to perform better then a 2x4 ? Note that I am not asking if having more ram will improve the performance of my PC, I'm asking if the bigger capacity ram performs better. Thank You.

  • Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - Dual monitor works only sometimes (ATI multi-desktop)

    I've been using my laptop with an external LCD monitor attached to it at work (Philips 201E). And at home with a different external monitor (Samsung 2032BW). I have an ATI graphics card (HD3450), with Ati Catalyst drivers enabled and I'm using the Single display desktop (Multi-Desktop) seeting. At work I have the external monitor on the left and laptop on the right, while at home the other way around. So when I switch between the two setups, I just needed to go to Ati Catalyst Control Center, change the order of the displays, change the resolution (Home - 1680x1050, Work - 1440x900), reboot and it was all fine. But since a while it doesn't work properly anymore: At home it still works fine. At work it doesn't work. Sometimes it works for some reason, after a few resolution/setting changes in ACCC and reboots... it's very strange and annoying. With the home monitor I can see the whole bootup process on both monitors (laptop + LCD) and it always just works fine. With the work monitor on the external LCD monitor I just see "No video input" until I get to the login screen, then it shows up there as well. But after login it will either: Flicker a few times, but then work OK. Or (more often) Flicker once and then go back to "No video input" again. I usually end up rebooting a few times until it works. Does anyone have any idea for fixing it? People from Dell have told me that Lefthand SAN's require at least two nodes and data must be mirroring between them so capacity is a half less compare to other SAN technology (e.g.Equal Logic). Is it true? Can a HP lefhand SAN be used as a stand-alone storage server with full RAID function (1, 10, 5)? TIA, -giobuon

I have come across a Windows XP machine that is sending unwanted p2p traffic. I have done a 'netstat -b' command and explorer.exe is sending out the traffic. When I kill this process the traffic stops and obviously Windows Explorer dies. Here is the header of the stream from the Wireshark dump (x.x.x.x) is the machines IP. I have looked in Windows firewall and it shouldn't be letting this traffic through. I have had a look into the messages explorer.exe is sending in Spy++ and the only related ones I can see are socket connections etc... My question is what can I do to look into this deeper? What does malware achieve by sending p2p traffic? I know to fix the problem the easiest way is to reinstall Windows but I want to get to the bottom of it first, just out of interest. Edit: Had a look at Deoendency Walker and Process Explorer. Both great tools.   • File open fails initially when trying to open a file located on a win2k8 share but eventually can su

    Core of the problem: I receive "(0x80070002) The system cannot find the file specified" for roughly 8 to 9 seconds before it can open it successfully. In a nutshell, we have two COM components. Component A calls into Component B and asks for a UNC filename to write to - the filename returned doesn't exist yet, but the path does - it then does its work, creates and populates the file, and tells Component B its done by making another com call. At that point Component B will call MoveFile to rename the file to its "official" name. This code has worked for (literally) years. Its works fine on win2k3. Its works fine when its running on win2k8 and points to a share on a win2k3 server. It also runs fine, if the share is actually located on the same win2k8 machine that the code is running on. But if you run it on win2k8 and point it to a share on a different win2k8 server, it fails. Both Component A & component B exist in their own Windows Service running with as a domain admin account. The shares are configured for "Everyone/Full control" in all test environments, similarly so are the underlying folders that the share points to. All machines are in the same domain. During debugging I realized the file actually does exist by the time I get to checking manually for it - after several iterations it occurred to me that the file doesn't "show up" until some delay passes by - so I put in the loop below in component B as shown below: int nCounter = 0; while (true) { CFileStatus fs; if (CFile::GetStatus(tempname, fs)) break; SleepEx(100, FALSE); nCounter++; } This code does, in fact, exit and nCounter is generally between 80 & 90 iterations when it does -- indicating the file "appears" approx 8 to 9 seconds later. Once that loop exits the code can successfully rename the file and all further processing appears to work. I put a CFile::GetStatus in component A immediately before it calls into Component B and that indicates success - it can see the file and get its true size yet the call into component b made immediately after can not see the file until the above indicated delay passes. I have verified the pathnames are precisely the same, even though it would clearly have to be for the calls to eventually succeed after a pause of 8 to 9 seconds... When something like this occurs I always assume there is a bug in my code until proven otherwise, but given (a) this code has executed properly for a very long time and (other than my diagnostic loop added) has not changed, and (b) it works in all environments except the win2k8 - win2k8 share, I'm guessing there is some OS issue in here that i do not understand. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

    Hi, I just set up a wireless network at home using a Linksys WRT54GL. All was fine except that I can still access 192.168.1.1, the configuration setup page of the router, within the local wireless after I disabled "Remote Management". I think if remote access is indeed disabled, one can access my router setup page only by using a cable connecting from his computer to the router. Is this true or am I wrong? Thanks and regards!

    I'm trying to get a Yaws web server working on a cloud service (Amazon AWS). I've compilled and installed a local copy on the server. My problem is that I can't get Yaws to run while running on either port 8000 or port 80.     OK, I'm a C# programmer that is trying to streamline the deployment of a custom windows form app I inherited and built an installer for with WiX (this app will need to be reinstalled regularly as I'm making changes to it). I'm not really used to admin type things (or vbs, or WMI, or terminal servers, or Citrix, and even WiX and MSI are not things I usually deal with) but so far I put together some vbs and have an end goal in mind. The msi does work, and I've installed it from the mapped O: drive on my dev machine and while RDP'd to a citrix machine. End Goal: Deploy code written on my dev machine and compiled into an MSI (that I can improve upon within the confines of WiX and whatever the Windows Installer Engine allows) to the cluster of Citrix machines my users have access to. What am I missing in my script to get the MSI to execute on the remote machines? Layout: Machine A is my dev machine, and has the vbs script and the msi file (XP SP3) Machines C1 - C6 are the Citrix Servers that need the application installed them via the msi (Server 2003 R2 SP2) There is also optionally a shared network resource that all the machines can access.   • IIS 401.3 - Unauthorized on only 1 server out of 3 set up for network load balancing

    Over the weekend our Server Admin set up two virtual Windows 2008 machines with IIS installed and set them up under NLB. I came in and changed the application pool the website was running under to our domain account that has proper access to the database and the file share hosting our .NET web application Sitefinity, and changed it to .NET 4 Integrated. NLB and everything was running fine on both servers. He brought up the third server for our cluster on Tuesday and I performed the same actions.. The only difference was that I was given admin rights for the third server so I could set it up remotely instead of going to his office. He has full control over the share and NTFS perms on \\hostname\Sitefinity and I believe I only had read access. I pointed the web site to the same \\hostname\Sitefinity\sitename share that the others were on and the authentication/authorization test settings passed. I hit the site from http://localhost (like I did successfully from the other two before trying the cluster's IP address) and I received a HTTP Error 401.3 - Unauthorized. I've verified many times that the application pool is running under the same service account. I tried hitting just a simple test.htm.. works fine on both of the first two servers but I get the same 401.3 on the third. I copied my dev project to the local inetpub directory and re-pointed the website and that ran perfectly. I turned on Failed Request Tracing and it acts like it's still running the local IUSR account I guess (instead of my domain account)? Here is an excerpt of the File Cache Access Start and the error from the trace: FileName \\hostname\sitefinity\sitename\test.htm UserName IUSR DomainName NT AUTHORITY ---------- Successful false FileFromCache false FileAddedToCache false FileDirmoned true LastModCheckErrorIgnored true ErrorCode 2147942405 LastModifiedTime ErrorCode Access is denied. (0x80070005) ---------- My personal AD account was then granted read/write perms to the share so I created a new application pool and set the site under it in case there was an issue with the application pool but no success. I created another under my own account and it still failed. It just seems like maybe it's not trying to access the files under the account my application pools are running under although that's the only way I've done things before. I set the Physicial Path Credentials in Advanced Settings on the site to the service account and it threw a 500 error of some sort so I assume that's not the answer (and I don't have to do it on the other servers). It's like somehow I'm trying to force impersonation on the IUSR account or something?

    The system log on my Openfire + OpenLDAP installation is getting flooded with this message: slap_global_control: unrecognized control: 1.2.840.113556.1.4.473 This means that Openfire wants OpenLDAP to do server-side sorting, which OpenLDAP doesn't support. The Openfire LDAP Guide advises to set the property ldap.clientSideSorting to true in this case. Unfortunately, Openfire doesn't find any user accounts in LDAP anymore if I do that. How do I make this work?

  • File open fails initially when trying to open a file located on a win2k8 share but eventually can su

    Core of the problem: I receive "(0x80070002) The system cannot find the file specified" for roughly 8 to 9 seconds before it can open it successfully. In a nutshell, we have two COM components. Component A calls into Component B and asks for a UNC filename to write to - the filename returned doesn't exist yet, but the path does - it then does its work, creates and populates the file, and tells Component B its done by making another com call. At that point Component B will call MoveFile to rename the file to its "official" name. This code has worked for (literally) years. Its works fine on win2k3. Its works fine when its running on win2k8 and points to a share on a win2k3 server. It also runs fine, if the share is actually located on the same win2k8 machine that the code is running on. But if you run it on win2k8 and point it to a share on a different win2k8 server, it fails. Both Component A & component B exist in their own Windows Service running with as a domain admin account. The shares are configured for "Everyone/Full control" in all test environments, similarly so are the underlying folders that the share points to. All machines are in the same domain. During debugging I realized the file actually does exist by the time I get to checking manually for it - after several iterations it occurred to me that the file doesn't "show up" until some delay passes by - so I put in the loop below in component B as shown below: int nCounter = 0; while (true) { CFileStatus fs; if (CFile::GetStatus(tempname, fs)) break; SleepEx(100, FALSE); nCounter++; } This code does, in fact, exit and nCounter is generally between 80 & 90 iterations when it does -- indicating the file "appears" approx 8 to 9 seconds later. Once that loop exits the code can successfully rename the file and all further processing appears to work. I put a CFile::GetStatus in component A immediately before it calls into Component B and that indicates success - it can see the file and get its true size yet the call into component b made immediately after can not see the file until the above indicated delay passes. I have verified the pathnames are precisely the same, even though it would clearly have to be for the calls to eventually succeed after a pause of 8 to 9 seconds... When something like this occurs I always assume there is a bug in my code until proven otherwise, but given (a) this code has executed properly for a very long time and (other than my diagnostic loop added) has not changed, and (b) it works in all environments except the win2k8 - win2k8 share, I'm guessing there is some OS issue in here that i do not understand.
